IN THE DARK

FOR THE

SEVENTH TIME

ŠKODA AUTO SWITCHED ITS

LIGHTS OFF FOR ONE HOUR IN 18

DEPARTMENTS OF ITS THREE CZECH

PLANTS, AS WELL AS IN THE SERVICE

CENTRE IN KOSMONOSY AND THE

CUSTOMER CENTRE IN MLADÁ

BOLESLAV.

A

number of households, towns and

companies around the world turned

off their lights for an hour at 8:30 p.m. on

30 March as part of the Earth Hour event,

a global initiative organised by the World

Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

The carmaker regularly implements new

ideas concerning energy-efficient lighting and

air conditioning at its production plants. That

is why LED technology is currently being

used to light many manufacturing areas. In so

doing, the Press Shop, Paint Shop and Logistics building have managed to reduce their

carbon footprints, and the employees benefit from the more pleasant colours of the light

emitted at the workplace. This year, around

2,000 LED lights have already been installed,

and another 10,000 will be added in the coming years. For the manufacturing of its cars

and components, ŠKODA AUTO has also set

a goal to completely shift to carbon-neutral

power at its Czech factories by the middle of

the next decade. Additionally, it has reduced

its energy consumption by 36 percent and the

overall environmental impact by 56 percent

since 2010.

A record-high number of 165 municipalities, 77 companies, more than 750 individuals and 11 historic sights participated in Earth

Hour 2019 in the Czech Republic. A total of 14

public events took place. The biggest cities’

main monuments – Prague’s Vyšehrad, Vítkov

and Petřín, Brno’s Špilberk Castle, obelisk in

Denisovy sady and New Town Hall, Ostrava’s

Town Hall tower, Pilsen’s St Bartholomew’s

Cathedral, Town Hall and Archdiocese – went

dark, along with the street lights in a hundred

smaller towns. RED

Green technology

The new fleet shows lower levels of NOx and

CO2, as well as unburned hydrocarbons.

Every diesel truck saves an annual 3.2 tonnes

of CO2 in Mladá Boleslav and even 4 tonnes

in Kvasiny due to multiple work-shift

operation. Replacing the handling equipment

saves almost 200 tonnes of CO2 a year. To

give you an idea, it takes one year for 16,000

fully grown trees to break down the same

amount of CO2.

Li-Ion battery trucks are even more

environmentally friendly. Each of them

saves emissions of more than 20 tonnes as

compared with the diesel version. Only onetenth (1,600) of the number of mature trees

is needed every year to eliminate their CO2.
