News from the group
BETTER THAN THREE YEARS AGO
Independent Compliance Monitor Larry D. Thompson has confirmed that the VW Group complies with its obligations under its agreement with the US Department of Justice. This was part of dealing with the problem of measuring emissions from diesel engines. The main condition was to introduce compliance program in order to detect and prevent any breach of anti-fraud and environmental laws. According to Thompson, the VW Group has become a better company than it was three years ago. At the same time, its management is committed to continuing efforts to enhance its corporate culture and processes.
AERODYNAMIC JEWEL
Volkswagen has unveiled the design of its first fully electric SUV, the ID.4. It builds upon a distinctive face of the car, aligning it with graceful organic shapes and top aerodynamic properties. The resistance factor has been reduced to an excellent value of 0.28, which allows for a driving range of more than 500 km. Similarly to the ENYAQ iV and VW ID.302, this novelty will be constructed on the Group’s modular platform for MEB electric vehicles.
SAVWIPL contributes to India’s recovery
The state of Maharashtra, which has two SAVWIPL plants and an administrative centre, is one of India’s areas that have been affected the most severely by the COVID-19 pandemic. Measures against the spread of the coronavirus have hit the country’s economy very hard. However, the local automotive sector is showing signs of an improving economic situation. SAVWIPL has recorded an increase in car sales in August for the third month in a row and supplied customers with 15 percent more vehicles than expected. The company’s year-on-year comparison reveals a sales increase of a full 17 percent. The positive figures are due to the resumption of production in June and new models, as well as the company’s adaptation to the emergency situation with an emphasis on digitisation. ŠKODA AUTO won’t be a cheap brand
We will stick to Strategy 2025, says Thomas Schäfer, the new Chairman of the Board of Management
Mr Schäfer, you’ve been managing ŠKODA AUTO since August. What are your first impressions?
First of all, I would like to thank all the Škodians for a great welcome! They’ve helped me to settle in during the first few weeks. I’ve already met many colleagues, dove into ŠKODA AUTO’s 125-year history and gained a detailed overview of the company’s current status and upcoming products. Speaking of products, one of the highlights so far has been the world premiere of the ENYAQ iV in Prague. It’s a great car, and I’m really proud of the team that stood by during its birth.
Was it difficult for you to say goodbye to South Africa, where you lived for five years?
South Africa had become my home – both professionally and privately. So, of course, it wasn’t easy to say goodbye. But on the plane to Europe, this was outweighed by feelings of anticipation for what lies ahead. I look forward to getting to know the Czech Republic, its people and its culture better. As a keen jogger, I’ve already gained my first tremendous impression of Prague, and I will certainly be making one or other round in Mladá Boleslav, too. And I’m looking forward to the tasks that lie ahead for all of us: ŠKODA is an amazing brand with great potential!
If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
In what direction do you plan to take the carmaker?
ŠKODA is doing very well thanks to the work of the team and my predecessor. My primary task and responsibility is to continue its success story with the team over the coming years. In so doing, I will not abandon Strategy 2025; it is effective, and we’re still far from reaching all of our goals.
What exactly do you mean by that?
ŠKODA AUTO is clearly positioned at the moment. It always offers good value for money. Customers are pleasantly surprised by the Simply Clever solutions, outstanding spaciousness, easy usability and unique design that every model offers. ŠKODA cars will always be accessible – no matter whether we are targeting students, young families or elderly couples. We will keep it that way. However, in addition to our current model range, I see further growth potential in conquering new markets and focusing more on entry-level segments. In this way, we’ll have the opportunity to expand our customer base significantly.
When you say entry-level segments, do you mean moving towards becoming a cheap brand – an idea that has appeared in some media?
We certainly won’t be turning ŠKODA into a cheap brand. We’re concentrating on Korean, Japanese and French manufacturers. They are our core competition, so we’ll be taking them on. I already look forward to the market launch of our new FABIA next year. It will be a great car, and I have high expectations.
There have been rumours for some time that production of the KODIAQ is going to Wolfsburg and that the SUPERB is going to Bratislava. Is this true?
It would be a big mistake if we did not fully exploit the potential of our plant in Kvasiny. It is one of the most efficient and modern facilities in the entire VW Group production network with well-educated and highly motivated colleagues. At the moment, we’re in the middle of discussions with the VW Group. We will have a decision by the end of the year, also with regard to the SUPERB. I’m convinced that there will be a good and long-term solution for everyone.
How quickly will the ŠKODA brand recover from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic? Where will it stand at the end of the year?
The current sales figures show that the year is by no means lost. We are working hard to make the most of it. Our July figures were even 8 percent up on the previous year, we were able to increase our market share significantly, and August looks very promising, too. My thanks for that go out to all the Škodians – the whole team! Unfortunately, the number of COVID-19 cases is currently growing again, so I appeal to everyone: Let’s stick to the hygienic measures to protect the health of our employees in the plants.
You have been working in the automotive industry for about 30 years. Can you tell us about your most valuable experience?
Together you can achieve the seemingly impossible. If you don’t start, you won’t get anywhere! It’s all about trust in the team. I’m sure that here at ŠKODA we will achieve great things together and put the carmaker on the next level in this decade. One African proverb aptly says: “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” ED

Leading the peloton
ŠKODA supports the largest cycling event of the year for the 17th time in a row
t the end of August and in September, cycling fans’ attention was drawn to France. The reason is that this year’s biggest sporting event, the 107th Tour de France, took place on the country’s roads. As in previous years, the world’s most famous multiple-stage cycling race captivated with its dramatic course and great sports performances. Millions of spectators once again saw the ŠKODA brand, which was the official main partner of the race, nicknamed the La Grande Boucle.

ENYAQ iV on the road
The ŠKODA ENYAQ iV e-car became one of the stars of this year’s Tour peloton. In the fifth stage, on the day following the model’s world premiere, a specially modified version transported race director Christian Prudhomme, who coordinated the course of the race from the cab. The special equipment of the so-called Red Car enabled the charismatic boss to remain in contact with the race stewards and other organisational cars and to pass along information about the state of the race to them. The purely electric SUV played the role of Red Car in two further stages at the end of the three-week race and also crossed the finish line on the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
Emphasising electromobility
The brand-new Mladá Boleslav–made e-car was part of the fleet of 250 cars provided by ŠKODA to the organisers and race management. Thirty of them are models of the ŠKODA iV family with a plug-in hybrid drive. Just like bicycles, they represent sustainable individual mobility. Therefore, the Tour de France has also become an ideal way to introduce these cars to an international audience. ED
A heart for cycling
The carmaker’s history started 125 years ago with bicycle production. That is why ŠKODA AUTO has supported professional and amateur cycling at various levels for a long period. In addition to the La Grande Boucle or Vuelta multiple-stage races, our company partners with a number of other national and international cycling competitions. Bicycles and bicycle accessories also form an integral part of the brand’s extended product range.
Transformation in secrecy
onverting the ENYAQ iV into the Red Car started in early June this year and was carried out in complete secrecy. In cooperation with an external company, the Marketing department team participated in the process and consulted on the modifications with the professional departments of Technical Development. They tried to maintain maximum safety and, wherever possible, a maximum number of car features and zero interference with the crew’s comfort. One of the most difficult tasks was installing a skylight. Having cut out the hole, the technicians used a SUPERB roof window, including the frame and modified reinforcements. To make it easier for the director to get up when leading the peloton from the car during a stage, they installed a pad about 40 mm high between the roof and the roof racks. The race director’s control panel is located on the centre console of the rear seats; among other things, it provides for a radio connection using five radios between which it is possible to switch, including a volume control or a beacon. These new electrical devices required a specially designed and developed external power supply that works without interfering with the car’s internal system. The supply apparatus is hidden in a box covering about half of the luggage compartment and containing two batteries with a capacity of 72 Ah, external chargers, a holder for the five radios and their control unit.

Crystal glass reward for the best
Once again, the Tour de France trophies were designed by ŠKODA Design
or the 10th time in a row, the winners of the famous Tour de France cycling race have raised trophies made in the Czech Republic above their heads. Peter Olah, a ŠKODA Design team member, was in charge of crafting their shape, as he was on all previous nine.
Race symbol
In 2011, the Mladá Boleslav designers set themselves the task of making an iconic Tour de France trophy that would become the symbol of the race. At the same time, they intended to enrich the cycling event of the year with something typically Czech. They decided to design prizes made of Czech crystal glass and draw attention to the art of our glassmakers. “The unchanging shape requires that a truly original shape be created each year to differentiate the trophies from each other. At the beginning, we never imagined that someone might have more than one of them in their display case. But Peter Sagan, for example, has already acquired several. That’s why it was important that we come up with a genuine original every year”, says Olah. Today, in the design phase, he also thinks a little about how his new work might stand out against that of his compatriots.
New technological procedures
This year’s trophy has an unusual pattern of “growing” rectangles. The ŠKODA designer has drawn inspiration from both traditional and modern techniques. It is based on Czech cubism that is typical of ŠKODA AUTO, while also using 3D modelling technology. “I’m applying techniques I know from car design. First, I made a 3D model using line blending. It wasn’t clear whether this decoration could be created on a glass object using a grinder, but in the end, the glassmakers did it”, explains Olah. At the same time, he admits that inventing an original pattern every year is becoming more and more challenging. However, the Lasvit glassworks that Peter is traditionally collaborating with are providing him with support. “First, he describes his inspiration, and then we look for a common way to materialise it. In the first draft, Peter often goes beyond the limits of craftsmanship. Paper can withstand a lot, but the actual material has its limits. We don’t know what decorative cuts will do, for example, in a narrow spot. We first fine-tune it on prototypes to achieve the line accuracy that Peter requires”, explains Marek Bartko, the Lasvit technologist. Luděk Vokáč

A lot of fun with glass
Peter Olah, the ŠKODA AUTO designer, also uses traditional materials when designing new cars
What made you work with glass?
I graduated from an industrial design and architecture programme, and in my work, we always prepare precise documents. Owing to the Czech glassmaking tradition and the glassworks’ proximity to Prague and Mladá Boleslav, I intended to try working with this vivid material. At the beginning, it was merely a hobby. I paid for my lessons learning how to work with it. Eventually, the fun transformed into products.
Grinding one glass trophy for the Tour de France takes three days.
Do you usually work with this material today?
Yes, but I had to learn how to do it. Over time, I’ve come to realise that glass is originally a liquid material, and it is natural to use it to design round shapes when respecting this fluidity. However, I like discovering the limits of the material and the technology.
Do you use glass when designing new models?
It allows us to combine the precision of hundreds of millimetres in a car that is designed on a computer using the handwork of experienced glassmakers as well. We use it mainly for concepts in which we create large glass elements. Manually machined parts, created on special cutters, weigh several kilogrammes. We strive to demonstrate the creativity and precision of this handicraft as much as we can.

Treats for fans
The We Love Cycling magazine entertained with unique content from this year’s race
hen the ENYAQ iV appeared as the race director’s car at the Tour de France, the ŠKODA brand rewrote the history of the famous race. Previously, this famous race had never had a purely electric Red Car. Despite the strictest secrecy measures, the team of the online magazine We Love Cycling managed to gather a lot of interesting material ahead of the world premiere. It recorded a message by race director Prudhomme officially announcing the presence of the ENYAQ iV on the Tour and, in cooperation with the ŠKODA Storyboard server, shot a video capturing the car’s transformation into the director’s car and the start of its first stage of the race. The server, which is popular among cycling fans from all over the world, also took a look back at the performance of the electric SUV, this time with a video made in cooperation with the ASO organising company. On the days when the SUPERB iV reappeared as the director’s car, the We Love Cycling team used the race of the mythical Col du Galibier mountain to shoot the video. Together with the famous influencer Cameron Jeffers, they shot the so-called “hero video”, presenting the ENYAQ iV as the perfect companion for cyclists. During this year’s race, the We Love Cycling magazine also collaborated with former professional cyclist and YouTuber Keira McVitty, who not only made interesting behind-the-scenes videos from the first and second stage of the race but also moderated a series of “interviews from the cab of the organiser’s car”. Her guests were former professionals Andy Schleck, Adam Blythe and Christian Philipp, who is the head of the VME – Experience Marketing department. Magazine readers could enjoy articles about the route of the race, as well as comments from experts, profiles of favourites and key moments from history. The editors also prepared a lot of inventive and entertaining materials for social networks. simona králová

ŠKODA AUTO platform use
The system on which ŠKODA Dorm Booking is built was used by the SVP team during the coronavirus pandemic to make reservations for our staff and has proved its worth. The MAL employee programme works on the same principle. “In the future, we intend to establish further offers for employees on this user-friendly platform”, says Petr Mach, SVP coordinator from GGP – Process and Organisation Management.
INVENTORY SPED UP BY ONE SHIFT
ALREADY AT THE END OF OCTOBER, THE NEW SYSTEM WILL BE USED TO TAKE INVENTORY AT ALL ŠKODA PLANTS
ast year, the annual inventory-taking at Kvasiny was reduced from three to two shifts. Production benefits from this saving, where it offers the opportunity to make about 800 more cars. “Every year, we are examining how the available technologies can help us in automating some manual inventory work”, says Radek Najman from FIB/5 – IT Production Preparation. IT ŠKODA is the driving force behind inventory digitisation and, together with the Production and Logistics and Controlling areas, has been working on this project since 2016, when the SCAN4INV central inventory application was created.
Did you know...
... that in the FELICIA days (i.e. the 1990s), the inventory encompassed about 5,000 parts or their sets and took six shifts? Today, it includes about 10 times more parts or sets but takes just two shifts to complete.
Inventory news
This year, the importance of cell phones will increase in the data collection process. “Compared with the previously used terminals, cell phones are cheaper and can be used for more apps. They are also connected to a central database, so we can virtually live-monitor the inventory process”, Najman explains the advantages.
One of the novelties will speed up the inventory-taking of pre-selected sequential parts by a few hours, where previously all information was on paper first before being entered into the system. After processing the data, the employees printed out the reports and only then started the acceptance. “Authorised workers will now use their phone to scan the last car in which a sequential part was mounted and then read the bar code of the last selected part on the trolley. The system immediately calculates which sequential parts have been taken and displays the information to be checked”, says Najman.
There has also been a change at the welding shops. There will no longer be paper inventory tickets for parts related to a specific car. Phones will merely record the vehicle codes, and the system will assign the proper parts to them. Line sections that are difficult to reach will be adapted as well. “Only the outermost cars will be recorded, and the system will identify which cars are between them”, explains Najman. Finally, automating the entire inventory process will also affect secondary lines. While the main line used to stop production half an hour earlier to allow the sets to be completed on the ancillary lines, the ancillary line will now be left in an unfinished state as well. Workers will add information to each set whose cycle it relates to and for which of the cars it is intended. Parts composition (e.g. unfinished doors or units) is automatically calculated according to the technological BOM. Luděk Vokáč
Work in progress and parts
This year, the inventory digitising process not only refers to finished cars but mostly affects the so-called unfinished production, that is, a period when work in the plants is stopped, the cars are in various processing stages, and the prepared parts are available in innumerable quantities.
The future of inventories
"This year’s improvement in inventory-taking will not be the last. Inventory automation and digitization is an example of an cross-functional project with high added value, which is why we want to continue optimizing processes next year. We are going to extend the innovation in the form of scanning car codes to paint shops, for example. Furthermore, we intend to use data from monitoring the cars’ movement on the lines so that, in some parts of the car factory, it won’t be necessary at all to monitor products”, Says Lenka France SVP, expert in area F.
Implementation team
Team of co-workers from departments PL – Brand Logistics, PF – Car Production, PK – Component Production, FCB – Controlling of Purchasing, Material Cost, Stock and FIB –System Integration Order MGMT, Production in cooperation with SVP annually examines how technological trends and solutions can be used in practice. Component Production
Component Production
Fewer emissions and less friction, consumption and weight
ŠKODA AUTO has put into operation a new plasma coating line for its 1.0 TSI evo engines cylinders
technically innovative process that the PK – Component Production department has started using makes it possible to replace used cast iron cylinder liners by simply applying a powder layer with a total thickness of 0.15 millimetres. ŠKODA AUTO has invested almost EUR 29 million in this process, which will be used to produce the new three-cylinder engines of the EA211 evo model series. The new technology will reduce the friction, consumption, emissions and weight of the new-generation 1.0 TSI evo three-cylinder petrol engines. The plasma-coated motors will be built in Mladá Boleslav in three shifts and assembled as part of the FABIA, SCALA, OCTAVIA, KAMIQ, KAROQ models, as well as the OCTAVIA e-TEC models with mild-hybrid technology.
How the new technology works
During the production process, the engine block’s combustion chambers are first milled on the machining line. Next, the functional surfaces of the cylinders are roughened by a 1,500 W laser to enable perfect plasma adhesion. The laser beam then creates 10 grooves with an average depth of 40 micrometres (a micrometre is one one-thousandth of 1 millimetre) on a surface of 1 millimetre. The entire operation takes place in a protective nitrogen atmosphere to protect the laser optical devices from impurities and ensure the necessary degree of precision. A mixture of hydrogen and argon is used as the required plasma gas. Every minute, 4.5 litres of hydrogen run through the torch, and the resulting plasma reaches a temperature of up to 15,000°C. Powdered steel is fed into this, which contains aluminium, iron, carbon, silicon, manganese and other elements. The size of the individual grains of powder can be up to 50 micrometres. After application on the cylinder walls, the molten powder forms a layer about 250 micrometres thick, which is reduced to 150 by machining the rollers. Each cylinder undergoes quality control as part of the manufacturing process, during which the optical instruments first measure the roughened surface and then assess its condition after the application of the plasma. Subsequently, the structure of the plasma is examined by means of eddy currents. ED
Christian Bleiel
Head of PK – Component Production
By applying the plasma, our motors’ efficiency is going to increase. The ultra-fine layer reduces friction losses and helps to reduce fuel consumption. In addition, this method distributes heat more evenly within the combustion chamber, thus improving the thermal stress on the engine.

Axel Andorff
Head of G3 – product linE MIDSIZE / MEB
Where did you work prior to joining ŠKODA AUTO?
I was working for Mercedes-Benz for almost 20 years. As purchasing manager, I worked in China for the entire Daimler Group. I helped out on the previous generation of the A, B, CLA and GLA models and took part in creating concepts for their current versions, as well as the upcoming fully dedicated EV platform. In the middle of 2018, I received an offer to take over management of Technical Development at Seat.
You have just passed the first 100 days as head of the G3 department. How have these first few weeks been for you?
I started shortly after the coronavirus lockdown, which proved to be difficult. The Spanish and Czech brands have a lot in common, but they are also different. I was especially fascinated by the commitment and enthusiasm of the entire team to make the new ENYAQ iV premiere a success. The employees thought about not only the product itself but also what they could do or improve for the customer. I think they have this deeply rooted in their genes.
What is the most important task your department is currently dealing with?
Following the world premiere, our top task now is to roll the ENYAQ iV out on the road and bring it to our customers. At the same time, we have to push our Passat/SUPERB partner project.
Do you see any differences in the Czech company compared with what you were used to in the past?
There is this very common Simply Clever concept. It permeates almost every debate, and I really enjoy this. I also appreciate the locals’ ability to get the best out of a project even with very limited funds.
What has surprised you in a positive way?
Even before I arrived, for example, I’d been working with Christian Strube, Board Member for Technical Development, and his team. As I’m now diving in deeper and seeing the Škodians’ tremendous desire to create perfect products, especially from a technical point of view. And they always look at the overall picture, not only through the lens of their specialisation. This holistic approach is amazing.
Would you like to change anything over the next 100 days?
We’ve found that if we change our products, we need to change and more closely link the processes we use. We’re already working and consulting on some of them with the relevant top management. There will be another important milestone, but it will take a little more than 100 days. Štěpán Vorlíček

FORCE Program
FORCE Program
Flawless assembly
Simple and transparent car production without mistakes or unnecessary checks
OUR GOAL:
TROUGH EFFICIENCY TOWARDS FLEXIBILITY FOR GLOBALISATION
OUR WAY:
SIMPLY CLEVER SOLUTIONS
OUR MOTIVATION:
CHANGING MINDSET TO SECURE THE FUTURE
he second action field of the FORCE Program – Customer-oriented Quality – mainly focuses on production processes and the goal of eliminating repeated checks during car production.
“This year, we’ve concentrated on checking pressed parts in press shops and on the process standardisation of final assembly in the MB and Kvasiny plants. In addition, we are engaged in the early stages of car development and construction”, says Josef Ditrich from PFS-K/1 – Series planning – Press Shop. The implementation team aims to influence the design so that the car’s final form is assembled simply and transparently (the so-called Design for Manufacturing). In the Press Shop, for example, they have saved 15.5 percent of non-production checks by gradually modifying tools and fundamentally changing the checking method, which means there is currently no 100-percent finish on any pressing. The Clever Finish project is being carried out in sections of the final assembly. They simplify and straighten production flows, increase the percentage of flawlessly produced cars and create the potential to reduce the number of checks. The essence of the project is that the checking and releasing of produced units take place at specific points. For example, employees at Checkpoint KB7 specialise in the exterior and engineering fit, employees at Checkpoint KB8A in the interior and surface, and KB8 releases finished cars. Another significant change is the introduction of a fast “direct” line and a slow remanufacturing line KB8 in the final assembly section of MB II, which is used for the production of the SCALA, KAMIQ and FABIA models. “We’re currently preparing and testing the project. We want to deploy it in early 2021”, Ditrich adds. ED
Watch the first sample of the video entitled ‘Gardener’.
A beautiful example of how the goals of the FORCE Program’s second action field can be linked to practice is presented in a video campaign for the employees of Hall M13.
Tough guys against errors
The non-traditional video campaign launched in late August draws attention to conscious missteps during production. Anyone can make mistakes, and when that happens, the mistake needs to be reported. This is exactly what the video campaign, launched by the PF1 – Car Production MB I department, motivates employees of Production and Logistics, specifically Assembly Hall M13, to do. It is in this section of production that the currently sold ENYAQ iV, OCTAVIA and KAROQ models are developed. The videos respond to the principles of the FORCE Program’s second action field – Customer-oriented Quality – in order not to check the quality but produce it straight away. As it primarily concerns the actual assembly, where employees play a role in whether the final product is made correctly, accurately and with high quality, the campaign focuses on that section. Foremen will initiate all team interviews in the coming months with the four prepared videos. They want to use them to motivate employees to report any mistakes that have been made and convince them there is no reason to be ashamed or even worried. Together, they will discuss why the errors occur and find out what might help eliminate them so that potential errors are not detected only during the final checks. The videos use funny exaggerations to present situations in which workers make mistakes, and they will run on screens in production departments on shop floors, even during breaks. ED
Looking for suggestions every day
Analyses of production activities take place at ŠKODA AUTO all the time
The third action field aims to increase added value. First of all, it focuses on detailed breakdowns of times that indicate potential in productivity or on activities that do not increase the value of the product (car); the customer does not pay for them. One of the more important tools is also the analysis monitoring the complexity and installation rate of various equipment levels. The implementation team, which includes specialists from the PFS-P – Programme Management and PPF – Vehicle Production Planning departments, groups the manufactured cars into batches according to their trim level and manages the order of their production accordingly. The team plans the orders so that the carmaker can prevent time and labour being wasted. For example, customers can order the Doorprotektor extra equipment for their KODIAQs, which are produced on two assembly lines at the Kvasiny plant. Its selection concerned about 15 percent of the KODIAQ cars produced, and waste was evident in both assembly lines (staffing, material logistics etc.). The new measure meant that the PFS-P department set up the production programme so that the equipment was directed to only one of the assembly lines.
The implementation team has also been monitoring Value Add on all lines within the PK – Component Production department. “Thanks to the possible cooperation within the Group, we have organised several workshops with our colleagues from the VW plant in Kassel to improve added value, and we are gradually succeeding in making it happen with the support of other departments of Component Production”, says Roman Vinš from PSI/3 – IE Car Production MB – Paint Shop, Montage. All measures are registered, verified and implemented by the car company only after being approved at the KVP (Kontinuierlicher Verbesserungsprozess in German or Continuous Improvement Process) workshops. The purpose of all this is to maximise productivity and increase the value-added ratio of produced cars. While this ratio increased from 43 to 46.2 percent last year, it should reach 49 percent this year. ED

On gas and electricity
The new OCTAVIA is offering the broadest range of eco-friendly drives to date
he fourth generation of ŠKODA’s best-seller is expanding its range with three alternative drives: the plug-in hybrid iV, the mild-hybrid e-TEC and the environmental G-TEC on natural gas (see picture). “We have made it a priority to reduce aerodynamic resistance and CO2 and NOx emissions during the early development stage already. We’ve managed to combine efficiency and sustainability with a high level of functionality and versatility”, emphasises Christian Strube, Board Member for Technical Development.
In the iV series, the innovation is following last year’s plug-in hybrid, the SUPERB iV. Likewise, it is equipped with an electric motor that has an output of 85 kW, though in a new development version. The increased range on electricity, which allows it to contribute to lower pollution in city centres, is provided by regenerative braking that also reduces brake wear. The Economical Driving Assistant also contributes to the car’s frugality, cooperating with the recovery system and adjusting its level according to an approaching roundabout or speed limit so that the car decelerates as efficiently as possible.
The fourth-generation OCTAVIA reduces CO2 emissions thanks to not only alternative drives but also excellent aerodynamics. The numbers 0.24 and 0.26 may not tell you much at first glance. However, these are the values of drag coefficient for the OCTAVIA and OCTAVIA COMBI that place these cars at the top not only of their segment. ED

Organic packaging material is composted in Pune and improves the soil of the logistics park
n July, the brand’s Logistics department launched a pilot project in which it tests biodegradable films for packaging parts prior to them being shipped to our plant in Pune, India. It checks whether the innovative packaging concept can be used on a larger scale than before. “At ŠKODA AUTO, we take a holistic approach to constantly shrink our ecological footprint and also encourage our employees chip in. Together with our Pune colleagues, we test films based on corn starch. Using this concept, we have already halved the amount of conventional plastic packaging used for parts deliveries to this plant”, says David Strnad, head of PL – Brand Logistics, which expects to have the testing results by June 2021.
The so-called compostable films protect parts just as efficiently as conventional plastic packaging. The significant difference is that after use, it decomposes within three to six months and then serves as an organic fertiliser in the logistics park in Pune. The unique packaging concept is a Green Logistics project and will save the carmaker approximately 500 kg of conventional plastic films every month.
The brand’s Logistics department specifically targeted a new type of packaging that is biodegradable. The CKD Centre employees tested several test consignments to check that they meet the strict requirements for shipping overseas in containers. The quality control following the delivery to Pune revealed no damage nor any traces of corrosion on the components that had been transported. Subsequently, the carmaker checked on-site whether the packaging would degrade according to plan. The Pune logistics staff built composters made of recycled material, which were filled with other organic waste, in addition to the films. After only six months, the films had largely biodegraded. ED

ore than 360 FABIA Rally2 specials reliably serve their rally teams on five continents. However, ŠKODA Motorsport’s customer programme not only focuses on the actual sales but also includes a whole range of support and globally unique services. The 15-member team is available to customers 24 hours a day, often maintaining very personal relationships. After all, their care plays as much of a role in the results of the most successful Rally2 race car as its quality and reliability. More than half of the customers are teams operating several cars and renting them, too. “These are really big clients with whom we have relationships spanning many years. The biggest of them has bought over 20 FABIA Rally2 racing specials. The second group consists of drivers with one car who take care of their racing special themselves and participate in national or local championships”, is how David Jareš, EM/5 – Commercial Programme, describes the customers.
Customer care is based on personal relationships. Every specialist takes care of “their” teams and knows their history and what is happening in their region. Communication most often takes place via WhatsApp: The clients simply record a video or take a picture of what they need to consult on or require help with. And the people in Mladá Boleslav address everything at once, for example by sending spare parts on the same day. What is also unique is the spare parts catalogue itself, which the ŠKODA Motorsport team has developed. It is an application that displays the entire car disassembled to the last screw; the customer just marks the required part and can order it. The catalogue is also used as a guide with technical diagrams or tightening torques of screw connections. “It is a unique application that no one else offers at a similar level”, Jareš adds. Another valued service is consultations on how to modify the car before each competition. Thanks to a comprehensive database of rallies that the factory team or its technicians have participated in, the Motorsport specialists can perform analyses of tracks and special stages to provide customers with the recommended settings for shock absorbers, differentials and transmissions. The drivers do not have to start from scratch, and they have a point that they can continue from; they just have to adjust the settings during the tests before each competition. Štěpán Vorlíček

The first step when preparing for a rally is to make an analysis based on information from the past so that we know what might be waiting for us. With these data and technical regulations, our team will fine-tune the most suitable car settings for the conditions in question. On-site activities then include the monitoring of mechanics at work and the crew synergies – the goal is to observe how their cooperation could be made more effective. Based on the analysis, we suggest to the crew which tyres to choose or provide recommendations on braking and shifting at the optimal revs.

We’ve been using the ŠKODA Motorsport Customer Programme for over two years and have been very satisfied from the start. Cooperation with the Sales department works absolutely smoothly. Primarily, we value the fact that they can promptly pass our questions onto the technicians, who answer them promptly. And it is this readiness and flexibility that I consider the strongest aspect of the ŠKODA Motorsport Customer Programme. I believe that other customers see it that way, too. It’s really pleasant to work with such professionals.
Brisk pace, gravel and long jumps
After a break of several months, the carousel of the World Rally Championship kicked off, which took place in Estonia between 4 and 6 September. The local tracks are known for their high speed and technical complexity. Here, the gravel offers many jumps, and the cars can fly a distance of 40 metres. The problem, however, is the deep ruts with a solid base, which form only after the first cars have passed. All this awaited the crews during 233 kilometres divided into three days and 17 special stages. A total of nine customer crews set out on the Estonian track with their FABIA Rally2 or FABIA Rally2 evo racers. The former ŠKODA fact ory driver Pontus Tidemand scored in the WRC 2, intended for factory and professional teams, by taking third place, 1:21.7 behind Adrien Fourmaux with a Ford after a close chase. The next ŠKODA was driven by the Norwegian Eyvind Brynildsen, who placed fourth with an interval of a mere 2.1 seconds. In the WRC 3 category intended for private teams, a podium position was secured by home racer Egon Kaur in his FABIA Rally2 evo, who placed third. Štěpán Vorlíček

SAVWIPL CONTRIBUTES TO INDIA’S PUSH FOR RECOVERY
During the lockdown, SAVWIPL worked tirelessly at both manufacturing plants to control the situation. Several teams foussed on helping society cope with the pandemic while others focussed on ensuring business continuity
he news from India may be grim as the number of COVID-19 cases is expected to rise. In the western part of the country, the state of Maharashtra, where SAVWIPL has two plants and its administrative headquarters, is also one of the most affected states. The Indian economy has been severely hit by the strict lockdowns imposed.
That is the bad news. The good news is that the inherent strength and optimism of both the people and the economy are already showing signs of a comeback. The best indicator is the automotive industry, which contributes to around 7 percent of India’s GDP. A good monsoon has translated into a better rural economy, which has shown growth when it comes to key purchases.
As India leapfrogged from BS4 to BS6 (equivalent to Euro 4 to Euro 6 emission standards), SAVWIPL was already prepared with BS6 products. August was the third straight month of growth for overall automotive sales, at 17 percent year on year, indicating stability. In August, the VW Group sold 15 percent more than the targeted numbers.
During the lockdown phase, SAVWIPL worked tirelessly to control the situation and, as a result, was ready to resume operations in June. Today, SAVWIPL is ramping up production of the all-new SUVs as part of the INDIA 2.0 project. Aggressive and proactive measures are in place to address any concerns, and the Chakan and Aurangabad facilities are now coming on stream.
As early as May, ŠKODA AUTO India was also pioneering digital product launches in India. The digital introduction of not one but three models – the RAPID 1.0 TSI and the new SUPERB and KAROQ – was widely attended, and the products received an enthusiastic welcome from the media and audiences. In the marketplace, SAVWIPL innovated by offering a safe and contact-free vehicle purchase and delivery experience thanks to early investments in digitisation. From initial enquiries, test drives and booking to financing and, finally, delivery, the whole process is now contactless. Additional initiatives to give customers peace of mind, including an extended warranty and service value pack, were introduced and are available with a single click. These measures have given customers more confidence to invest in new models bearing the ŠKODA badge.
India enters its annual festive season around October and November every year, especially around the time of Diwali, the Festival of Lights. This is the time when most Indians make big purchases, which usually means cars and two-wheelers. The excitement has reached fever pitch in the marketplace, as all OEMs are lining up new offerings for their customers. The ŠKODA brand has also planned new introductions, and there are several exciting financing and ownership schemes to tap customer demand.
On the macro level, the Indian government has indicated that it will take some strong measures to boost automotive sales. In the long term, the government is making a huge push towards building a more sophisticated road network. India already has the second-largest road network in the world, and the average rate of road construction has increased to 30 kilometres per day in 2018–19. In fact, during the severe lockdown phase, in the months between April and August, 26 projects were commissioned to build 744 kilometres of highway.
A long-term roadmap has been planned for the sustainable development of India’s automotive industry, which will take into account global development, infrastructure readiness, localisation, cost competitiveness and other factors. This ties in with the government wanting to make the country independent and self-reliant. The vision is to make India the definitive automotive manufacturing hub for the world, and despite the disruption caused by COVID-19, all eyes are still fixed on this goal. ED
Tour de France – Trophy - Gallery
This year's trophies were designed by Peter Olah from ŠKODA Design.
The trophies were created in the glassmaking and design company Lasvit, with which Peter has been cooperating for a long time.
The production of trophies takes at least two months and is tuned to prototypes.
The production itself - glass blowing and sandblasting - is relatively fast. But grinding one piece takes three days.
The winners of the Tour lifted seven trophies made in the Czech Republic for the tenth time.
How it works - Gallery
The batteries are produced in a straight line inside the bright and spacious hall. Production consists of three main parts, with finished batteries coming out roughly in the middle. The first part is used for the assembly of battery modules and requires a high degree of accuracy. In the second, the aluminium tub, which forms the battery body, is equipped with internal and external components. And in the third part, a set of control electronics – the so-called e-box – is created.
Modules move in two parallel streams in the first part of the line – for the battery’s left and right parts. Each module arrives from the supplier charged to about 20 percent of capacity, so everyone must pay close attention to safety.
The aluminium container, which forms the battery body, is simultaneously created in the second part of the line. It is most often robots that handle it, but with a manual back-up behind them. The sturdy container is fitted with all the necessary connectors, seals, stops, screw bushings, as well as an external thermal shield that protects the entire battery from the heat generated by the exhaust pipe.
Then comes the robot that removes any dirt from the container with a vacuum cleaner. After being vacuumed, the container is ready for the so-called “wedding” – that is, the coupling of the container and the assembled battery modules.
The installation of other components, especially the cooling circuit, is next. The installation of low-voltage cabling and high-voltage jumpers is also completed, and panels and braces are added to the container.
Before closing the battery with the cover, the e-box is installed. It is prepared on a smaller assembly line nearby, and in thus is continuously supplied to the main assembly. The e-box is one of the parts that must be protected against electrostatic discharge (ESD). “The floor, clothing and shoes must all comply with the requirements of the ESD protected area in order to prevent this risk. Before arriving at the workplace, each worker is measured at a special station to ensure that their clothing and footwear provide the required function”, explains Otakar Mašek, a battery assembly specialist from PKM/3 –Assembly Battery, Small-lot Assemb.EA 111.
The battery is tested after assembly. First, the tightness of the cooling circuit and of the entire battery is tested separately. Then it can go to one of the 13 test benches for a series of electrical tests that check both HV and LV (communication) parts and the insulation functionality. At the end, the battery is charged to around 38 percent of its capacity directly on the test bench. Next, warning labels and other markings are added, and off to the warehouse it goes.

Ročník 2022
Ročník 2023
Success in times of challenges
In mid-November, around 300 managers gathered at the Škoda Museum for a two-day meeting with the top management of the MMK. The opening session was addressed by Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, and Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union. The theme of transformation guided the entire event, which included seminars, discussions and updates from various areas of the carmaker.
Compact but still spacious
The Kylaq, Škoda’s latest and smallest model, was unveiled in November. Measuring less than 4 metres in length, it targets the popular Indian market segment, with prices starting from CZK 220,000. The Kylaq introduces the new Modern Solid design language to India, along with the largest boot in its class and a wide range of equipment focused on safety, including six airbags.
IVET 2024 Innovation Fair
The 8th edition of IVET showcased 36 innovation themes, underscoring Škoda Auto’s commitment to practical advancements. New was a section dedicated to the Indian market and contributions from Group colleagues. The event also featured the presentation of the Elroq. From Simply Clever solutions to technical breakthroughs, the fair continued the tradition of innovations designed with customers in mind.
Chronicle of 2024
In 2024, Škoda Auto continued to launch new models while modernising its bestsellers. The carmaker also adopted a new design language, opened the Laurin & Klement Kampus, supported numerous charitable and sustainable projects, achieved many successes and celebrated several important anniversaries. Discover the highlights from the past year in this year’s Chronicle.
Kronika roku 2024
V roce 2024 Škoda Auto pokračovala v uvádění nových modelů a také v modernizaci bestsellerů. Automobilka navíc přešla na nový designový jazyk Modern Solid, otevřela Laurin & Klement Kampus, podpořila nespočet dobročinných i udržitelných projektů, dosáhla mnoha úspěchů a oslavila několik významných výročí. To nejdůležitější z právě končícího roku se dočtete v letošní kronice.
Launching a new era in India
Four metres is a critical threshold in the Indian automobile market and its segment with this maximum length accounts for nearly 30%. Škoda Auto is entering this segment with the new compact SUV, the Kylaq, which is developed and manufactured in India specifically to cater to the preferences of local customers. This launch follows the earlier introductions of the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan.
Conquering the French market
More than half a million visitors flocked to the Paris Motor Show in October, where global carmakers were in attendance. The Škoda Auto stand featured the new electric Elroq, which garnered much attention. Other cars from Škoda’s portfolio were also on display, including a specially modified fourth-generation Superb for the Tour de France race director and the Fabia RS Rally2 competition special.
Reducing software complexity
The second of the Brand Group Core’s six strategic packages is titled Reducing Complexity and focuses primarily on software. The increasing number of drives and assistance systems and the integration of other vehicle functions have led to a complex array of software variants. The aim of reducing the number of software variants is to decrease costs and enhance cybersecurity.
A look inside the battery
The new tomography centre in Hall M6 allows for non-destructive testing of the quality of MEB’s electric platform batteries. Škoda Auto inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility in June this year, and there may not be another facility like it in any other carmaker. Historically, the industry has employed computed tomography technology, or CT scanning, mainly for smaller parts.
Pohled do útrob baterie
