Energy, Not Just for Powering the Car

The Škoda electric cars support bidirectional charging, which can be used not only to power appliances but also as storage for energy from home solar panels.

To use the V2L function, the V2L adapter is mainly used, which is connected to the car's charging port.

The Elroq, Enyaq and Peaq models also have a 230 V socket in the boot (with the Transport or Comfort package).

Several ways to use energy

The Škoda cars do not need to use the energy from their traction battery only for their own propulsion. Thanks to the bidirectional charging function, it can also be used to power various appliances (V2L), supply a household (V2H) or feed energy into the grid (V2G). This function is available in the Škoda Epiq, Elroq, Enyaq and Peaq electric cars, and for the Elroq and Enyaq it is now available for all battery sizes in cars produced from mid-May this year.

 

How it works

1 To use the V2L (Vehicle to Load) function, which allows the car's traction battery to power common electrical appliances, a special adapter for the charging port or a socket in the car's boot is required. Power output of up to 3.6 kW is available (single-phase alternating current, 16 A). If both sockets are used at the same time, the power output is shared between them.

2 The sockets cannot be used during AC charging (alternating current). During DC charging (direct current), the socket in the car's boot can be used.

3 The V2H (Vehicle to Home) feature is used to power a household through a compatible wallbox. It will be particularly useful for customers with a house and their own photovoltaic system. This combination allows the car to be used as storage for electricity generated during the day, so that it can be partly used, for example, during periods when its price is higher. It can also serve as extended storage for houses without a connection to the electricity grid (so-called off-grid). The maximum output that can be drawn is 10 kW.

4 The V2G (Vehicle to Grid) feature allows a car to be integrated into smart energy flow management and grid stabilisation. Under certain conditions, an electric car can then supply energy from its battery directly to the grid, and its operator receives a financial reward or another form of compensation in return. In the Czech Republic, this feature is gradually developing, and suppliers are preparing tariffs that will make it available to a wider range of customers.

Did you know that while using the V2L feature, the car protects the traction battery from excessive discharge? The feature automatically switches off when the charge level drops to 20%.

 

Energy for many things

When using the V2L function, energy is drawn from the traction battery, which shortens the electric car's range. For example, charging the battery of an electric bike (the Škoda eMTB) with a capacity of 0.625 kWh will reduce the range by about 3.6 km. A day of running a portable fridge (Rhonson R-4035 Dual Zone 35 L) takes off a further approximately 7.5 km. Boiling water for 10 cups of tea reduces the range by 1.3 km. Depending on the household's consumption, the V2H function can supply energy for several days.
