Generation Z Teaches Experienced Leaders
Reverse mentoring fosters open dialogue across generations. Its pilot phase connected managers with colleagues under the age of 30.
The pilot phase of the programme, which brings a new perspective on leadership to Škoda Auto, brought together 20 mentors and 12 managers over four months. In at least three one-on-one meetings, they discussed current topics – ranging from intergenerational collaboration and values to artificial intelligence, digitalisation, and the younger generation's perspective on the carmaker's projects. The goal was to foster understanding and gain a new perspective on leadership, team dynamics, values, and work-life balance.
Benefits for Both Groups
Through reverse mentoring, managers discovered new perspectives and gained inspiration for leading teams and breaking down prejudices and stereotypes. They were also pleasantly surprised by the maturity and preparedness of their younger colleagues. The Gen Z mentors also gained valuable experience and new contacts, and they put their communication, argumentation, and presentation skills to the test in practice. At the same time, they were able to openly ask questions about things that interested them – such as whether their work makes managers happy or whether it's worth investing so much in their careers.
The project continues to evolve
Since May, managers have had the opportunity to find a mentor among their younger colleagues through the Mentoring Match Box. The programme is thus gradually evolving from a pilot phase into a fully-fledged tool that will contribute to the long-term development of an open corporate culture and modern leadership practices. It demonstrates that inspiration can come from anywhere – you just need to be ready to listen.

VM – Marketing
I approached reverse mentoring with an open mind and curiosity, and I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly our differing perspectives turned into a genuine dialogue. I've gained a new perspective on collaboration and the courage to ask questions about things I would have previously taken for granted.

Head of PF – Car Production
If a carmaker doesn't use reverse mentoring, it will lose its competitiveness. The programme also gives young colleagues the opportunity to hone their communication skills.
