What’s happening at ŠKODA AUTO
Freight transport using natural gas
The carmaker will support the broader use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in road freight transport. It wants to motivate its carriers to choose an environmentally friendly, safe and advantageous alternative to diesel and petrol. ŠKODA AUTO was the first carmaker to respond to the call by the Czech Gas Association, which will support the construction of filling stations and provide driver training. Together, they will also promote the introduction of state aid to acquire and operate LNG-powered trucks.
Peter Olah takes over management of Interior Design
One of the main figures behind the design of ŠKODA cars is getting more responsibility. As the new head of EDI – Interior Design, Colour and Trim, Peter Olah will continue to be in charge of the car’s interior architecture, which he has overseen since 2015. However, his area of responsibility will also include designing control elements, forming user experience (UX) and selecting colours, fabrics and materials. Olah also designs trophies for Tour de France riders and has created cups for the Ice Hockey World Championships.
OPEN TALK

Achievements and trophies
The best for the 20th time
Even in a challenging year plagued by the coronavirus pandemic, the carmaker was able to defend its title in the Czech Top 100 competition. The pan-European Comenius company has been organising the survey every year since 1996, and ŠKODA AUTO has come out on top 20 times during that period. “The biggest thanks go to our employees, who, despite the difficult situation, contribute to the positive development of our company through their daily work”, says Bohdan Wojnar (pictured), Board Member for Human Resources Management. At the end of the year, the carmaker also won the COMPANYBEST 2020 award, with which journalists from 31 European countries praised it for, among others, its development on foreign markets and innovative production concepts.
Six victories in Germany
For the seventh time in a row, Auto Zeitung magazine readers have chosen ŠKODA as the best imported car brand on the German market. In total, ŠKODA AUTO collected six victories in the 33rd year of the Auto Trophy survey. Readers chose the OCTAVIA model as the best imported vehicle in the compact class, and its RS version as the best imported sports car. The ENYAQ iV, which became the best imported e-SUV, also succeeded during its premiere. Other victories were achieved by SUPERB as the best imported car in the upper-middle class and KAMIQ among the imported SUVs of up to EUR 25,000.

New Zealand Police choose SUPERB
ŠKODA New Zealand won a bid for new patrol and emergency vehicles for the local police force. It will gradually deploy the Czech carmaker’s flagship cars to replace the Australian brand, Holden. The police officers will drive SUPERB COMBI cars in two- and four-wheel-drive variants. The cars impressed them with their environmental friendliness, which will help the police significantly reduce CO2 emissions, as well as their driving characteristics, safety and large interior space.

ŠKODA AUTO helps
Help during the pandemic
During the current second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, ŠKODA AUTO is helping where it is needed, just as it did during the spring. All 100 of the OCTAVIA cars that the carmaker donated to medical and social facilities or other organisations are part of the effort. They have enabled disadvantaged children from the Mladá Boleslav, Rychnov and Vrchlabí regions to successfully tackle distance learning with laptops and Internet connections, to which the carmaker contributed CZK 625,000. The ŠKODA AUTO Endowment Fund, in cooperation with the Civil Society Development Foundation, has launched the second round of its crisis fund, through which it will support public benefit organisations in the Mladá Boleslav region with more than CZK 900,000.
packages with vitamins, disinfectant, respirators and other products for frontline workers were prepared by the carmaker together with the ŠKODA AUTO Endowment Fund.
Motorsport
End of the season in Monza
This year’s World Rally Championship season culminated with the ACI Rally Monza race in Italy. The customer teams did well with their FABIA Rally2 evo cars. The Norwegian duo Andreas Mikkelsen and Anders Jæger won the WRC 3 category, ahead of Oliver Solberg (supported by the ŠKODA Motorsport team) and co-driver Aaron Johnston. In the WRC 2 category, the Pontus Tidemand/Patrik Barth crew placed second and narrowly missed the world champion title. Behind them was the Jan Kopecký/Jan Hloušek pairing, also representing the Toksport WRT Team, which ultimately won the title in the WRC 2 team championship.
Dear Readers
Thank you for supporting our newspaper throughout 2020 and for all your suggestions, contributions and ideas on how to move the flagship of ŠKODA AUTO’s internal communications forward. We wish you a peaceful Christmas and as much happiness, joy and health as possible in 2021. Last but not least, we wish you relaxing moments with the pages of upcoming ŠKODA Mobil issues, which we are already preparing for you.
ŠKODA Mobil editorial staff
The Vrchlabí plant has already produced more than 3.5 million DQ 200 automatic transmissions. The jubilee unit rolled off of the production line on 3 December. Owing to high demand, the operation has increased its capacity to 2,340 units per day.
Coronavirus

COVID-19 and Christmas holidays
hristmas holidays are a time for well-deserved rest and seeing loved ones. However, they also bring an increased risk of coronavirus infection. Therefore, we would like to kindly ask you to be very careful and strictly adhere to all the measures during this period as well. You will protect yourself, your family members and, when work resumes in January, your colleagues. Thank you.
After the resumption of production in early January, ŠKODA AUTO, in cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union, will implement its elevated health and safety measures. The full wording of the safety and hygiene rules and details of the individual measures can be found on ŠKODA Space.
Keep track of the infection even during the holidays
During Christmas, please continue reporting any infections or contacts with an infected person to your employer via the COVID-19 Case Records application.
Regularly follow the current coronavirus information on the ŠKODA Space homepage.
If you have any questions, please call the 24/7 COVID Infoline at 326 837 920.
Follow any potential calendar changes in the eSměny (eShifts) application.
Use the COVID-19 info card on your mobile phone. You can download it via its QR code.
Think about measures after returning to work
Before returning to work, check your health with the five questions on the self-assessment questionnaire.
At all of ŠKODA AUTO’s indoor and outdoor premises, it is mandatory to wear respiratory protection.
It is still forbidden to smoke at any of the carmaker’s indoor or outdoor premises.
In early January, management and SO – Company Safety Department will complete their higher-level face mask use inspections.
In addition, random temperature checks will take place at the plant gates and halls.
In the first and second calendar weeks of 2021, working from home will be the maximum priority of all employees who can manage it and for whom it would be meaningful. Managers have a duty to consistently assign tasks for mobile work and control that they are being performed.
Business trips between ŠKODA AUTO plants and locations in the Czech Republic will be kept to a minimum in the first two weeks; a negative COVID-19 antigen test will be required before taking them.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, cross-border workers (with the status of a so-called commuter) from EU countries do not currently have to submit the result of a PCR test upon arrival in the Czech Republic. Any citizens from any countries outside the EU must fill in their arrival form and submit their test results generated in the Czech Republic to public health officers within seven days.
Get tested for free
All MFA cardholders (including employees of external companies) can do a rapid antigen test for free. Book yours through the COVID-19 Case Records application. On 4 and 5 January, there will be greater testing capacity.
Interview
interview
We will expand capacities and markets
In a wide-ranging interview, Thomas Schäfer, Chairman of the Board, explains the direction the carmaker will take in the coming years
Where will you be spending Christmas and New Year’s Day?
I will be back at my old home in South Africa to organise the move to Prague with my wife. Until now, I’ve been living in a hotel in the centre of the capital. I’m looking forward to moving into my own four walls soon – with my wife and our three dogs.
Sounds like a busy holiday...
It won’t be too bad – we’re a well-coordinated team, and we’re used to moving. I hope the organisation won’t take too long (laughs), so there will also be time for the family and relaxation. After such a challenging year, we all need that.
I would like to thank all ŠKODA AUTO
employees for their commitment, for
pulling together with the company
and for managing the current
difficult situation responsibly along
with the KOVO Trade Unions.
What do you see as the biggest challenge for ŠKODA in the new year?
The effects of the corona pandemic will certainly be with us for some time. That is why it’s important that we keep a very close eye on our spending, continue our strong sales performance and remain vigilant about observing hygiene regulations. I’m appealing to the whole team – each and every one of us has a role to play and makes a difference!
What sales volume do you expect for 2020?
Without a doubt, the pandemic has left its mark, even in terms of sales results. We won’t be able to close the gap caused by the production shutdown in the spring because we’re already producing at the limit of our capacity. For that reason, in terms of unit sales, we expect earnings to be around 20 percent down on the previous year. Nevertheless, we will fight until the holidays for every extra car we can make.
What do you expect for 2021?
The coronavirus will not have disappeared by 1 January 2021, and we expect further limitations. That said, we’re very well prepared for the new year with our many new products.
What can we look forward to?
There’s plenty in the pipeline for the new year, and we will be continuing our campaign: From the new-generation FABIA in the entry-level segment and product upgrades of our best-selling KODIAQ and KAROQ SUVs to the ENYAQ iV derivative, we are refreshing and significantly strengthening our model portfolio. In addition, as part of our INDIA 2.0 project, we will be launching our first small SUV in India, which I have high hopes for.
Besides having Group responsibility for India, ŠKODA is now also responsible for Russia, the CIS states (Commonwealth of Independent States – nine of the 15 former Soviet republics) and the North Africa region. What do you expect from this, and what will be the next steps here?
First of all, this is a fantastic award for ŠKODA. By taking on ever more responsibility for the Group, ŠKODA’s position within the Group will be significantly strengthened. Both Russia and North Africa are two exciting regions with great sales potential for us. Egypt alone has around 100 million inhabitants. We are carefully analysing how we can best leverage this potential. The export opportunities from India, for example, are also interesting.
In recent weeks, there has been much talk about the SUPERB’s relocation to the Bratislava plant. What are the plans for the three Czech sites?
ŠKODA is responsible for developing the next generation of the SUPERB and VW Passat model family. Both models will be produced in Bratislava from 2023. This will free up space for more than 150,000 units at our Kvasiny plant. We are going to use this capacity for additional volumes of our popular KODIAQ and KAROQ SUV models and another ŠKODA model. This will allow us to flexibly shift production volumes between Mladá Boleslav and Kvasiny, which in turn will create space at our main plant for the successor to the FABIA COMBI. We fought hard for this model, and I’m delighted that our arguments were convincing. The FABIA COMBI is important to our goal of offering affordable cars.
All three production plants in the Czech Republic will continue to play a decisive role in ŠKODA AUTO's growth
strategy
in the future.
And what about the other two Czech sites in Mladá Boleslav and Vrchlabí?
We will continue to strengthen our production site in Vrchlabí as a high-tech component plant; capacity utilisation there is very high over the long term. We are also discussing what role Vrchlabí can play in the increasing electrification of our model portfolio – for example, by producing components for electric cars. In Mladá Boleslav, we manufacture our important models: the OCTAVIA, KAROQ, FABIA, SCALA and KAMIQ. In addition, we will be transforming the site into ŠKODA’s electric mobility centre. Our ENYAQ iV has been rolling off the production line since the end of November. In short, all three Czech sites will continue to play a decisive role in our growth strategy.
ŠKODA will be celebrating a special anniversary in 2021: 30 years in the Volkswagen Group. What does this anniversary mean to you?
Our company can be proud of its development over the past 30 years. The carmaker has developed into a strong and self-confident brand within the Volkswagen Group. In 1991, ŠKODA produced just one series, the FAVORIT hatchback with a combi version called the FORMAN. Today, there are 10 series. At that time, the company sold just over 170,000 vehicles per year; today, we regularly break the 1 million mark. And in my opinion, the greatest success: In 1991, ŠKODA employed 17,000 people, while today we can offer a secure job to over 40,000 Škodians. ŠKODA has become a real pearl of Czech industry – thanks to the dedication of the entire team and the principle of joint decision making combined with excellent cooperation with our social partner, the KOVO Trade Union, and the VW Group.
Now, of course, the question is how we will tackle the next 30 years...
Let’s look at the next 10 years first; there will be plenty to keep us busy (laughs)! Our responsibility is to continue the success story with the ŠKODA team by effectively guiding the company through the transformation process with the help of our ‘NEXT LEVEL ŠKODA’ programme for the future. We are focusing on three priorities: expanding our model portfolio towards the entry-level segments, exploring new markets for further growth in the volume segment and making tangible progress in the areas of sustainability, diversity and new business models. I am convinced that if any team can manage this, then it’s us! ED
NEXT LEVEL ŠKODA
1
Expand!
We will grow!
The carmaker will expand the number of models, especially in the lower-middle class, and will include other electric cars in its portfolio. It will make better use of the potential of the markets where it is active – in particular, India and southern Europe.
2
Explore!
We will broaden our scope!
Demand for cars with internal combustion engines in Europe will drop, which is why ŠKODA AUTO will ensure its growth by entering new markets. It will focus on the Russian region and countries in North Africa. It will also focus on the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations – Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Singapore and Brunei) countries, home to more than 660 million people.
3
Engage!
We will be engaged!
In cooperation with our partners, the carmaker will make significant progress in the sustainability and diversity field. By 2030, electric cars will make up 55 percent of new cars.
The path to growth
1
From 2023, production of the SUPERB model will move from Kvasiny to Bratislava.
2
This move will allow the carmaker to increase the production volume of popular and profitable KODIAQ and KAROQ SUVs. In addition, it will free up capacity in the Kvasiny plant for another ŠKODA brand model.
3
The Mladá Boleslav plant will produce the important OCTAVIA, KAROQ, FABIA, SCALA, KAMIQ and ENYAQ iV models. Thanks to the latter, it will be transformed into an electromobility centre for the ŠKODA brand.
4
In the case of the Vrchlabí high-tech plant, ŠKODA AUTO management is discussing how it could participate in the increasing electrification of the model portfolio – for example, by producing components for electric cars.
5
In addition to India, the ŠKODA brand is now also responsible for Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (nine of the 15 former Soviet republics), as well as the North African region. It will also focus on Southeast Asia.

New Intelligent Connectivity System
INNOVATED ŠKODA MODELS AND IMPROVED DIGITAL SERVICES WERE PRESENTED AT AUTO GUANGZHOU 2020
t the end of November, the carmaker presented its 2021 model year novelties for the Chinese market in Guangzhou, China. The innovated SUPERB, KODIAQ and KODIAQ GT cars are heading for pre-sale there, and customers can also purchase the previously presented modernised KAROQ model.
The greatest novelty is the new intelligent connectivity system developed in cooperation with SAIC VOLKSWAGEN. It will also appear on the Chinese market in the new OCTAVIA model. Thanks to the ŠKODA OneApp application, customers can fully benefit from their connection to the online world when they are on the road. The digital solution offers them parking space recognition, car search, parking fee payment, car status reporting, voice control and connection to their smart home.
The new version of the KAROQ model that was just launched on the Chinese market offers its electrically operated tailgate and perforated leather seats for the same price as before. The 2021 model year of the SUPERB will have a USB-C mobile phone port, among other novelties. It is also available in the two modernised models of the KODIAQ family. ED

Sports Experiences not only on the Road
The OCTAVIA model family’s offer was complemented by the RS sports versions and robust SCOUT
ith its bestseller, the carmaker continues in its successful tradition of cars for the lovers of more dynamic driving or active lifestyle fans. The top models of the OCTAVIA series offer an even higher level of safety and comfort, new assistance systems, and modern connectivity elements. “The fourth generation of the OCTAVIA model is more versatile, offers more digital technology, and is more environmentally friendly than ever before”, emphasises the car’s qualities Christian Strube, Board Member for Technical Development. ED

The carmaker has previously introduced its sports version of the OCTAVIA model with its RS iV plug-in hybrid drive. It is now followed by the RS variants with the most powerful new generation petrol and diesel engines, which are both dynamic and economical (you might have read about them in ŠKODA Mobil 11–12/2020). Our customers may choose the 2.0 TDI EVO 147 kW engine with its front-wheel or four-wheel drive. This version features its new electronically controlled sixth generation disc clutch. Its 4 × 4 drive control electronics respond in milliseconds to any changing road situation, and thus support dynamic cornering. The 2.0 TSI EVO unit offers its 180 kW output and front-wheel drive. The electronically controlled axle lock on the VAQ front axle ensures the petrol version’s improved driving characteristics and traction. The RS model’s standard chassis is lowered by 15 mm. However, our customers may order the DCC adaptive chassis, which automatically adjusts its damping characteristics and allows for a highly sports ride in the Sport mode. The supplied progressive steering also contributes to the greater dynamics of the car's steering.

55
litres is the volume of the SCOUT version’s fuel tank, which is thus 10 litres bigger, compared to the standard model’s tank
The car with its off-road characteristics, delivered exclusively in its station wagon variant, features its 15 mm higher ground clearance, a package for bad roads, and all-wheel drive. For the first time, it is also available in its version with the most powerful 2.0 TDI EVO diesel engine, with which it can easily pull a two-ton trailer with brakes. The new sixth-generation electronically controlled disc clutch also contributes to low fuel consumption on long adventurous journeys, and the integrated control unit can detect whether the all-wheel drive is currently needed, depending on the driver’s driving style. For off-road drives, the driving stability systems settings can be adjusted by switching on the Off-road function. It also changes the course of the accelerator pedal reaction, and the DSG automatic transmission shifts at greater speeds. The model’s robust appearance is provided by its chassis protection and other silver elements. Body damage is also prevented by the black plastic edges of the fenders, sills, and door lower parts. The standard trim also includes the full LED headlights. The special look of the car’s interior is brought by a mould with its wooden decor or, upon request, in its silver design. The chrome elements on the centre console, instrument panel, and doors or pedals with their aluminium look are impressive as well.

After the pandemic, we are moving forward fast
Our cross-functional team and the FastCo initiative prove that even a crisis can be used to increase competitiveness
he FastCo initiative (from “fast forward after COVID”) was initiated by the ŠKODA AUTO Board of Directors during the first wave of the pandemic in May 2020. A medium-term project led by Andre Wehner, head of the GG – Company Development and Digitisation department, FastCo aims to use the crisis as an opportunity to accelerate the carmaker’s transformation.
The FastCo team saw the situation around the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity and a trigger for change at ŠKODA AUTO.
The core team of around 30 employees was divided into four cross-functional working groups coordinated by Adriana Pavlíková (GGP), Štěpán Lacina (SPS), Kateřina Kramešová (PSI-P) and Dana Plath (VB). In the context of the changed business environment caused by COVID-19, the team was given the unique task of developing measures with an implementation time of between 6 and 12 months to increase the competitiveness of the carmaker in the fields of 1. organisation and structure, 2. ways of work and culture, 3. internal operations and 4. business model, products and services.
The FastCo team quickly identified 25 measures and presented its first results at the November meeting of the Board of Directors. They covered the coronavirus situation and issues like teleworking, the digitisation of our internal processes and interactive digital showrooms. Selected measures can be found in the “Four innovations” column. ED
Four innovations
Read what the working group leaders had to say about the presented projects:
1
Digitisation of internal processes
Organisation and structure
“One of the big topics in the car industry (IT Strategy) and beyond is the digitisation of internal processes. The aim is to streamline existing processes by using appropriate digital technologies like robotic process automation. One of the implemented projects for the FR department saves 10 hours per week when checking payment proposals. Smart automation for FCP will replace several days of work by creating monthly reports on energy consumption. We are currently working on six automation projects and plan to carry out another 12 next year”, explains Adriana Pavlíková from GGP – Procedural and Organisational Management.
2
Mobile Work 2.0
Ways of work and culture
“In the Mobile Work 2.0 initiative, we address the hardware and software we use, care for the health of our employees and develop new training opportunities. So far, we’ve simplified the signing of the mobile work agreement and presented important feedback from employees and managers on how to work more efficiently from home. We work closely with the KOVO Trade Union so that the measures taken benefit the carmaker and the company is attractive to the existing and new colleagues”, says Štěpán Lacina from SPS – Social Relations and HR Compliance about the initiative.
3
COVID-19 Case Records @SMART app
Internal operations
“In our team, we thought of identifying employees who are in quarantine or have positive tests. This would speed up the tracing of other employees with whom these people were in contact and who may have become infected. Thanks to the quick response of the team led by Jiří Prokop and Barbora Svárovská from the SG – Health Services and Ergonomics department, we had a functional application available in just two months, which can be used by all the employees. The application uses a more sophisticated and efficient way of tracing, thanks to which we protect the health of the ŠKODA employees even more and help keep the carmaker running”, says Kateřina Kramešová from PSI-P – Production System. See the November/December 2020 issue of ŠKODA Mobil for more details about the application.
3
Digital showrooms
Business models, products and services
In the pilot project, 220 dealers in 22 countries use digital showrooms. They are equipped with a set of innovative digital tools that support sales, as such, and represent new trends that respond to customers’ behaviour when they’re buying cars. Thanks to them, our dealers have all the necessary information about the cars on offer and their elements and they can visualise various cars, model variants and equipment levels in high resolution on very large screens. This enables the seller to better deal with their customers while still meeting the hygienic norms. The whole presentation is enhanced by interactive self-service touch screens, tablets and tables. The integration of other sales systems, such as the stock of specific dealers or direct access to the car configurator, is also very beneficial”, says Dana Plath from VB – Business Development.
Chronicle 2020
Chronicle 2020
A year full of events
In 2020, ŠKODA AUTO continued its tradition of the past 125 years and, despite the pandemic, made significant progress in its efforts to become a Simply Clever company for the best mobility solutions by 2025
Changes in the Board of Directors
In August, Thomas Schäfer (pictured) replaced Bernhard Maier as the carmaker’s CEO. The new Board Chairman sees growth potential in new markets and the reasonably priced car segment. Karsten Schnake became Board Member for Purchasing on 1 July. Dr. Johannes Neft takes over responsibility for Technical Development from Christian Strube in 2021.
Attractive employer
ŠKODA AUTO earned the Randstad Award 2020 and defended its title atop the rankings of the most attractive employers in the Czech Republic
were sold by After Sales through the new parts and accessories e-shop during the first four months of its operation.
Omnipresent AI
Through the planned digital transformation, the carmaker has strengthened solutions based on artificial intelligence (AI). It is also used by the Sound Analyzer application, which reveals the need for maintenance from the serviced car’s sound, or by the FabLab, where it is used for predictive maintenance. AI also played a significant role in other innovations across the carmaker.
Electrifying premiere
On 1 September, the ŠKODA ENYAQ iV model – the first purely electric SUV brand on the MEB platform – was presented in Prague. Viewers from all over the world were literally in the middle of the action thanks to the live transmission of 360° cameras. The next day, a specially modified car drove Tour de France Director Christian Prudhomme on the fifth stage of the race.
were reached on the Satisfaction Index of the Stimmungsbarometer survey. The good mood of our employees increased by 0.7 points year on year.
ENYAQ iV, OCTAVIA and KAROQ from one line
In February, the fourth-generation OCTAVIA liftback was successfully launched in the main plant. Gradually, its iV, SCOUT and RS variants have also been added. The brand’s bestseller boasts the widest range of drives in history: from its petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid iV and mild hybrid e-TEC to its G-TEC version powered by natural gas. In November, the purely electric SUV ENYAQ iV began to roll off the same production line in the M13 Hall, which is the first line in the VW Group to enable the parallel production of models on electric car platforms (MEB) and conventional engine cars (MQB).
Building in Mladá Boleslav
During the year, the Central pilot hall was being built in the main plant. In 2021, it will become the foundation for the pre-serial production centre during new model launches. Next year, the Central employee meal kitchen will open as well.
SPRING SHUTDOWN
Owing to the coronavirus pandemic, production stopped for 30 working days in Kvasiny and for 26 working days in Mladá Boleslav. It was the first time this had happened since the Second World War.
Carbon-neutral Vrchlabí
The plant in Krkonoše was the first to meet the carmaker’s commitment to using only CO2-neutral energy for production in the Czech Republic. By 2050, ŠKODA AUTO will become a carbon-neutral company.
Simply Clever Industry 4.0
The robotisation, automation and digitisation of production processes continued at a rapid pace. The Vrchlabí plant expanded its production line through its robotic station where its digital twin helped to shorten the reconfiguration time. In Kvasiny, robots took over all the welding operations in the Welding Shop, including internal body spraying at the Paint Shop. In this plant, the machine also picks up starter batteries from their supplied pallets and delivers them just-in-sequence to the line.
were saved during the first six months of the OPTIKON application, which was created in cooperation with the Brand Logistics, ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab and ŠKODA IT, which tested it. The application calculates the best way of placing and the number of different types of pallets, thus maximising the container loading capacity.
The jubilee 3 millionth ŠKODA car made in China since the start of production in 2007 rolled off the line at the Ningbo plant. In March, ŠKODA AUTO presented its significantly redesigned RAPID and RAPID SPACEBACK cars there, its modernised KAROQ at the Auto China show in September, and its innovated SUPERB, KODIAQ and KODIAQ GT in Guangzhou.
Custom-developed for India
In February, in New Delhi, the public first saw the VISION IN concept, an SUV model developed specifically to meet our Indian customers’ needs. In August, it was followed by the pre-serial model production in Pune. The SAVWIPL company opened its Quality Centre at the local plant, which combined all the analytical and test works in one site. The fourth branch of the ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab India innovation centre also opened in Pune. It will focus on developing digital and mobile solutions for the Indian market.
Trusted engine experts
ŠKODA’s Technical Development department has taken over responsibility for the development of small petrol engines for lower-class cars within the VW Group.
Offensive abroad
In May, ŠKODA AUTO launched its modernised RAPID model in the Russian region. The model is produced at the Kaluga plant. In September, ŠKODA AUTO started producing its fourth-generation OCTAVIA in Nizhny Novgorod. In November, the production of the successful KAROQ model started in Bratislava as well.

Combatting coronavirus
All 42,000 ŠKODA employees have demonstrated their great courage, responsibility and good heart in connection with the pandemic. Their health was protected at work by 80 measures against the spread of coronavirus. These measures were implemented in cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union. In addition, the carmaker donated more than CZK 100 million to support the fight against COVID-19 as part of its #ŠKODAAUTOpomáhá initiative.
eTC
Since May, the new Technology Centre in Mladá Boleslav has been training employees in their electromobility skills. The centre also analyses battery systems and tests the quality of newly produced batteries and cars.
Navigation through the carmaker
Over the summer, the S – Human Resources Management area introduced its KOMPAS personnel system, which replaces selected printed forms and converts the recruitment process into an electronic format.
The carmaker commemorated the anniversary of its founding with interesting activities. These included its From Heritage to Future exhibition at the ŠKODA Museum and the ŠKODA Classic Tour. However, many other important anniversaries also came together, including the Tool Shop, Brand Logistics, the ŠKODA Parts Centre, ŠKO-ENERGO and other important parts of the carmaker.
Think Digitally - Cloud
Data “in the Cloud” Improves Work
The carmaker is increasingly relying on cloud solutions, which means having shared data or applications on remote servers
t is not only a matter of video calls or shared storage sites. Without cloud services, it would be much more difficult for ŠKODA AUTO employees to create and use software, manage their business processes in Production and Logistics, as well as Sales and Marketing, or develop any new ŠKODA models. “Thanks to the shared resources, the cloud makes it possible to minimise IT infrastructure costs. Above all, it helps individuals and teams across the carmaker to work much more efficiently. From various devices, they can connect to cloud platforms from anywhere and any network”, explains Jan Mraček, coordinator of the FIT/1 – Enterprise Architecture & Cloud IT department. Simply put, you do not need your computer but can go to any device and start working on it.
This year, ŠKODA AUTO approved its corporate cloud strategy, whose pillars include the principle that every newly introduced application must be “cloud-ready”. It might not work on this principle right away, but it must be possible to move it to a cloud without any issues, if required.
Pay only for what is needed
Companies usually develop their private clouds for some of their solutions, but the public ones are the most widespread and advantageous type. It is a worldwide network of interconnected servers functioning as a single ecosystem. Some store and download data, launch applications or provide and deliver a variety of content and services, such as streaming videos, e-mail, office software and social media. ŠKODA AUTO employees use the Office365 software, which works on this principle. It is not even necessary to have a text editor or spreadsheet installed: They can also run remotely and be opened via a web browser. Most of the clouds aimed at the end customer also belong to the public category. ED
Did you know that...
... ENYAQ iV is the VW Group’s first model to take full advantage of cloud solutions? It is used, among others, for navigation and to use the ŠKODA Connect application and the MyŠKODA Powerpass service. Previously, the cars had partially communicated with local servers.
Cloud configurator
One example of effective cloud use is the web configurator of ŠKODA models, which previously ran on the carmaker’s servers. However, they remained busy only at peak times. “In the public cloud, we now only pay for what we use and when we need it. Performance capacity automatically increases only at peak times, such as at car showrooms or the launch of new models. Thanks to this elasticity, we save resources”, says Mraček.
Tool for working from home
Another cloud service helps employees to better manage home office life, which the pandemic has forced upon them. The MS Teams application has enabled them to cooperate online between teams and individuals. Each of the participants can connect from anywhere in the world. For example, they can work together on one Excel spreadsheet while simultaneously seeing each other on camera.
Think Digitally – Q App
Do you like it or not?
Employees are currently evaluating their experience with ŠKODA cars via the Q-App application, whose external deployment is in the pipeline
he feedback application has been running in its pilot operation for a year. The collected data are used by the GQ – Quality Management department to create a database of comments on specific models in real time. “We give users the opportunity to send their ratings and comments directly to the carmaker. So it can be said that people directly contribute to improving our cars. The application has been running for company and departmental cars since June 2019; external customers will receive it at ŠKODA Connect in January 2021”, explains Zuzana Machů from GQD – QS Product Technology/Purchased Parts. So far, ŠKODA AUTO has been the only company in the VW Group to introduce such an application. “The other brands appear to be very interested in it, as well. Following our example, they are working on similar functions. For example, Volkswagen recently introduced its internal Qare app for car evaluations”, says Machů.
Users rate cars in eight categories: exterior, interior, infotainment, online connectivity, driving and charging, assistance systems, engine and transmission, and other. They use emoticons in green, yellow and red for the evaluation and can also attach a verbal comment or attachment. ED
The procedure on how to install the application and a video tutorial on how to work with it can be found on ŠKODA Space.

PKL tests forklift trucks equipped with a new pedestrian and obstacle detection system
P KL – Concern Component Logistics/Management employees are currently testing 15 Jungheinrich forklift trucks in the M1, M2 and M6 halls and the smelters in Mladá Boleslav. In November, the electrically powered devices received their new Blaxtair safety system to reduce the risk of collisions with pedestrians or fixed obstacles at busy operational sites.
The newly installed system monitors the area behind the forklift truck, which is an area that the driver may not always be able to see clearly and where he could fail to notice an obstacle or pedestrian. “However, the system doesn’t relieve the operator or the pedestrian of responsibility. Despite the use of the novelty, the employees must maintain their vigilance and compliance with the rules for movement in the workplace”, says Tomáš Táborský from PKL/2 – Material Management. The system was deployed thanks to PL – Brand Logistics, which centrally manages the implementation of safety measures in handling equipment and also finances similar innovations.
Safety first
The novelty operates on a fairly simple principle. The forklift truck now features a stereoscopic camera on the rear of the cab roof, which captures the space with its 3D field of view. The data from the dual camera are analysed in real time by the control unit, which recognises objects and people. If a person or an obstacle is present in the detection zones, the control unit displays a warning to the driver on the instrument panel display, or the truck brakes automatically. Visual warning or deceleration is also accompanied by an audible warning. “The range of detection zones (see the Detection zones sidebar) can be tuned for the system and set according to the needs of the individual workplaces”, explains Táborský. Unlike security systems that use vibration wristbands (e.g. in Kvasiny, where the robot cooperates with a human in the just-in-sequence mode), workers do not have to wear any equipment. However, Blaxtair only detects the space behind the cart and not a full 360 degrees around the cart, which is what the wristband systems do. (You can read more about them on ŠKODA Storyboard in the article entitled “Robot delivers just-in-sequence parts directly to the production line at the ŠKODA AUTO plant in Kvasiny”). ED
Detection zones
The system detects two types of zones – obstacles and pedestrians, which can overlap and whose sizes can be set within certain limits. The system can detect obstacles up to 3 metres behind the forklift over a width of up to 6 metres in total. Pedestrians can be detected at a distance of 1.2 to 7 metres. It is not possible to do so any closer to the forklift because then the camera cannot “see” the person’s full silhouette. In the case of pedestrians, the zone width is 5 metres. For every zone, you can set the actions that the system will perform once it detects an object. These include an audible alarm, forklift deceleration or a complete stop.

Launching a new era in India
Four metres is a critical threshold in the Indian automobile market and its segment with this maximum length accounts for nearly 30%. Škoda Auto is entering this segment with the new compact SUV, the Kylaq, which is developed and manufactured in India specifically to cater to the preferences of local customers. This launch follows the earlier introductions of the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan.
Conquering the French market
More than half a million visitors flocked to the Paris Motor Show in October, where global carmakers were in attendance. The Škoda Auto stand featured the new electric Elroq, which garnered much attention. Other cars from Škoda’s portfolio were also on display, including a specially modified fourth-generation Superb for the Tour de France race director and the Fabia RS Rally2 competition special.
Reducing software complexity
The second of the Brand Group Core’s six strategic packages is titled Reducing Complexity and focuses primarily on software. The increasing number of drives and assistance systems and the integration of other vehicle functions have led to a complex array of software variants. The aim of reducing the number of software variants is to decrease costs and enhance cybersecurity.
A look inside the battery
The new tomography centre in Hall M6 allows for non-destructive testing of the quality of MEB’s electric platform batteries. Škoda Auto inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility in June this year, and there may not be another facility like it in any other carmaker. Historically, the industry has employed computed tomography technology, or CT scanning, mainly for smaller parts.
Pohled do útrob baterie
Kompaktní, a tedy i dostupnější elektrické SUV značky Škoda.
Elroq loaded with news
On October 1st, the Elroq made its world premiere in Prague. A compact and more affordable electric SUV from Škoda, this latest addition to the carmaker's model range impresses not only with its innovative features and solutions but also with its appearance showcasing the new Modern Solid design language. This language is characterised by functionality, durability and the use of sustainable materials.
Indian student car
Following the model of the Mladá Boleslav apprenticeship, students in India also built their own car. The result is an innovative pickup truck created by combining two Volkswagen models produced under the Škoda Auto banner at the Indian plant in Pune – Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan. The students had access to the latest technology, including 3D printing, which they used to produce the necessary parts.
FORCEd to peak
The Production and Logistics area is implementing a new production strategy. Škoda Auto will now ensure that the development of new vehicles considers efficient production requirements from the start. The aim is to reduce complexity, enhance automation, increase modularity and develop sustainable plants with optimal business results. All of these elements are crucial to Škoda Auto's future success.
Conference for female managers
Supporting women in leadership positions is a key component of Škoda Auto's diversity strategy. In line with this, the carmaker, in cooperation with McKinsey & Company, organised the Women Management Summit. The event focused on trends in the automotive industry, the importance of employees during transformation periods and leadership styles that foster an inclusive and equitable work environment.
Výrobní strategie peak
Oblast Výroby a logistiky zavádí novou výrobní strategii peak.
