    VISION GT electric racing car

ŠKODA Design has prepared a digital study inspired by the 1957 ŠKODA 1100 OHC for the Design and Transformation exhibition in Brussels, which is taking place during the Czech presidency of the Council of the European Union. The design model of the pure electric racing car VISION GT boasts active aerodynamics and new ŠKODA lettering on the front and rear. The exhibition will run at the Design Museum in Brussels until 8 January 2023.

    Production fire impacts eliminated

The last OCTAVIA car waiting for missing door panels was completed on 8 September. Deliveries of this material were disrupted at the end of January by a major fire at the Grupo Antolin site in Turnov. The initial estimates threatened to shut down production of door panels for up to nine months. However, a joint team from ŠKODA AUTO and the supplier managed to restore it in just eight weeks. This enabled the carmaker to start gradually completing the incomplete cars and deliver them to their customers as quickly as possible.

    Meet the electric coupé

The ENYAQ COUPÉ iV roadshow, which you may have visited in Mladá Boleslav or Vrchlabí, moves to Kvasiny at the beginning of the month, where it will take place from 3 to 6 October. You will find the exhibition in Hall K13 in Kvasiny from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

The biggest motivation? ŠKODA employees’ team spirit

How the new CEO, Klaus Zellmer, views his first quarter in office

Mr. Zellmer, you will have been at the helm of the Board for exactly three months in October. Is the blood flowing through your veins “green” yet?

I have to admit that I’ve received a great welcome from the ŠKODA employees, and I’m fascinated by the spirit in which the employees live and immerse themselves in the ŠKODA brand. This has always been my motivation! So I have to answer, yes, I can literally feel the “green” blood flowing through my veins. (laughs)

At the end of August, you made your first public appearance as ŠKODA AUTO’s chief executive at the premiere of Explore More. Did you have any stage fright?

I always feel tension at such important moments. In addition, it was exciting to have more than 450 guests on site after a break of almost two years. I loved it! We received direct, personal and very good feedback from the media on the VISION 7S study, the new logo and our brand strategy. A big thank you to the entire team that organised the event because the enthusiasm for the carmaker and the potential of the brand could be felt there too.

Shortly after your arrival, you mentioned that you are sticking to the company-wide NEXT LEVEL – ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030, but you’re also choosing what to emphasise. Can you elaborate on that?

We’re ramping up our electrical offensive again. For example, we have increased our original target for the share of EVs in our European market sales by 2030 from at least 50% to at least 70%. This is because the transformation process is accelerating. That’s why we will be launching three electric models as early as 2026 – much earlier than originally planned: A small electric car, a compact SUV and a seven—seater – with more models to follow We intend to invest a total of EUR 5.6 billion in electric mobility over the next five years.

The hearts of all ŠKODA fans will beat faster thanks to the new and modernised models.

When you talk about the future of ŠKODA, electromobility comes up a lot. What is the future for models with combustion engines?

I continue stressing that our ICE vehicles allow us to finance our transformation, especially in the early years, and of course, we continue investing in them and updating our portfolio. In the second half of 2023, we will introduce the new generation SUPERB and KODIAQ, and in 2024, the upgraded OCTAVIA. The cars will look fantastic and feature clean, highly efficient engines, along with the latest technology. They will make the hearts of all ŠKODA fans beat faster. Our models with combustion engines are particularly important to us in the developing markets around the world. A good example is India, where the KUSHAQ and SLAVIA models, which we developed on the localised MQB-A0-IN platform, are sales hits and achieving record results.

Where will ŠKODA be in the VW Group in the future?

We are already playing an important role by taking over the Group’s responsibility for the entire platform and several regions. Our new, distinctive design language and brand strategy are adapting to the electric future, clearly positioning us among the competitors and differentiating us from other Group brands. ŠKODA is now positioning itself to be on par with the Volkswagen brand while “fishing in a different pond”. We offer our customers a full range of cars from small ones to seven-seaters. In the VW Group’s volume brands, we will complement the Volkswagen, SEAT CUPRA and VW Commercial Vehicle brands and work together as one team. We have the full support of the new VW Group’s CEO, Oliver Blume, who visited us as one of the Group’s main brands (see page 2) shortly after taking up his position.

Let’s turn our attention to the current challenges... we are still plagued by parts shortages, the war in Ukraine is driving up the price of raw materials, and the coming winter is raising concerns about energy shortages. How is ŠKODA coping with that?

Frankly, there is no simple solution. Representatives from all the departments in our working group are constantly reassessing the key issues, including gas supply. This allows us to best prepare our plants and suppliers for any shortages. We are also in close contact with the authorities, network operators and suppliers to take short-, medium- and long-term measures.

Rising costs cause problems to the employees as well. What specific support does the carmaker offer to them?

I completely understand that the seemingly endless crisis makes numerous employees worry and concerned. Together with the KOVO Trade Union and its chairman, Jaroslav Povšík, we are doing everything we can to support them. Before I took office, I had several discussions with Mr Povšík and the KOVO plant council. They are very important partners for us. We have repeatedly shown that we can manage crises well if we do so together. In recent years, for example, we’ve jointly agreed on very fair wage increases, additional investments in our social infrastructure and special allowances and remuneration for night shifts. In addition, we have once again improved the bonus system in the ŠKODA Benefits Cafeteria. We are also tackling the current challenges together and with sensitivity. To secure our jobs in the long term, we must remain competitive, and we need to strike the right balance here.

In what ways do you think ŠKODA can be even better in the future?

I see a lot of potential in digitalisation: we need to go from simply to simply clever all the way and bring the umbrella in the door and the ice scraper in the fuel filler cap into the digital world. Diversity is another important aspect, and in this respect, we are below the national average. Diverse teams achieve better results, and our customers are diverse as well. To best meet their needs, we need to be equally diverse. From my point of view, it is also important for a greater sense of belonging in a car company that our management is closer to everyone. But that means establishing greater accountability at all levels.

What experience from the Czech Republic do you particularly value?

My participation in the ŠKODA Classic Tour was a significant boost to my familiarity with the ŠKODA brand. My wife, daughter and I drove the entire route in a 1960 ŠKODA FELICIA. The route took us through the beautiful Bohemian Paradise, I had the opportunity to chat with numerous ŠKODA drivers and once again experienced the great team spirit and shared fascination with the ŠKODA brand. You can hardly get more motivated! ED

    Energy for All

A large network of charging stations has been created for ŠKODA AUTO employees and departments

fter five years of effort, the Czech carmaker has succeeded in fulfilling its commitment to create a sufficient internal infrastructure to charge not only service electric cars and electrified cars but also its employees’ private cars and cars that support the individual departments. The network currently includes more than 1,360 charging points in Mladá Boleslav, Kvasiny and Vrchlabí. The project required a total investment of EUR 18 million (approximately CZK 441 million) and involved a number of the carmaker’s departments. The main roles were played by the PPB – Construction and Infrastructure Planning, PKV – Project Management and Pre-Series Component Centre and ŠKO-ENERGO. The charging stations are owned by PSU – Environmental and Work Protection, whose Green Office department significantly contributed to the project’s development. Support services were also provided by our colleagues from the Purchasing and Technical Development areas, as well as the Quality Management, After Sales, Controlling and Accounting and Tax departments.

    31.9 kWh

    Thoughtfully placed

The infrastructure is very varied with some stations serving, for example, the testing needs of the Quality Management and Technical Development departments and just under 1,000 stations dedicated to charging ŠKODA service cars. Today, the carmaker’s fleet consists of around 3,000 cars; in the future, it will overwhelmingly consist of electric cars. The infrastructure comprises both AC stations, which provide alternating current and can charge any electric car within an eight-hour working period, and DC rapid charging stations, which provide DC current to the battery. “The experts from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Czech Technical University helped us with the design of the layout of the stations on our premises. They modelled the likely charging demand by using data from our service cars; we then tried to place the charging stations at the spots with the greatest expected demand,” says Pavel Hanák, electrification project coordinator from the PKV department. In numerous cases, it was necessary to adapt their location to the availability of the electric power grid or to modify them and complete the necessary connections.

The current infrastructure capacity is sufficient for the future development of electromobility at ŠKODA AUTO’s plants and other premises.

    Clean energy

All the electricity that electric cars draw from the charging infrastructure comes from renewable sources. “The energy comes from biomass combustion; from our solar power plant in SC Kosmonosy, we buy green electricity with a certificate of its origin or, in the near future, directly from the Moravice–Melč wind power plant through PPA contracts (i.e. power purchase agreements, which allow companies to buy renewable energy directly from the producer – ed.),” explains ŠKO-ENERGO representative David Hošek. “We’re also preparing a new large solar power plant project with a capacity of 2.3 MWp,” he adds. ŠKO-ENERGO also manages the operation of the entire internal electric car charging infrastructure, to which our employees log in via their MFA cards when charging at the stations. Some stations are public and also fall under the Powerpass service network.

    More stations are coming

The construction of the charging infrastructure required about 150 kilometres of cables and over 350 cubic metres of concrete for the foundations of the charging stations. Besides being a relatively demanding project (a large number of small facilities), part of the challenge was also the legislation. “During the implementation of the project, it kept on changing. For example, there were changes in the rules of traffic signs for the stations. We also had to resolve the issue of electricity as fuel from a tax perspective. In that regard, we initiated a change in legislation,” says Tomáš Blažek, coordinator of the PPB/3 – Planning of Non-Production Areas department. Although the basic infrastructure for electric cars is “ready”, ŠKODA AUTO is working to expand it further. Plans are in place to enable car charging at a part of the employee parking lots, and more intensive construction is planned for our new buildings, such as the Laurin & Klement Campus, which is currently under construction. Unique device

A home electrical network simulator helps with electric car diagnostics

On the NetzSimulator screen, click on the icon to select a destination and set up the device. Once the electric car is connected, testing begins and takes between one day and one week.

he advent of electromobility comes with the need for new test equipment. The NetzSimulator takes technicians to 23 countries around the world in no time at all to test whether electric car charging works properly there. “Every country has its own standards that specify specific parameters for the network. Even in the EU, they are not uniform, so it is very difficult to cover the entire range of electrical networks and sockets, which must, however, be compatible with ŠKODA cars and other products,” explains Martin Krystek, a technical expert from the GQM-3/1 – Functional Testing, Powertrain, Electrical, and Electronics department. Therefore, he and his colleagues approached BluEmi, and within a few months, the NetzSimulator was born. For the time being, the carmaker uses one in its Quality Analysis Centre and will have another one made, if necessary.

    Electric network simulator

The discreet cabinet offers 23 types of sockets from the countries to which ŠKODA supplies its cars. Therefore, the Analysis Centre staff may easily test how the car will behave when plugged into various networks. Unique software has also been developed for the device for two modes. “The first one is user-based, where a specific socket from a specific country features predefined parameters for the electrical network. Using this mode, the charging cables and other accessories that we supply to the customer can be tested, and we can declare that they work correctly. In addition, cars with specifications for Europe that will charge correctly in Asia, for example, can be verified in this way,” explained Krystek. The other expert mode is much more detailed. For example, it is possible to simulate a European network on a Japanese socket but also to change the individual network parameters or create your own specific network for the test. The NetzSimulator can also be used to model the instability of the electrical network during charging and to observe how the car will behave in case of overload. “If the fault in the electrical network is minor, ŠKODA cars can tolerate it and continue charging, but if there is an overvoltage, the cars must disconnect from the power source to protect themselves,” explains Krystek. • Force Program

    FORCE Program

    More Effective Production

New models in the early development phase, production planning, innovation in production processes, quality of supplied parts and added value of products are addressed by the FORCE PROGRAM guarantors for the F2 and F3 action areas

he F2 (Customer Oriented Quality) and F3 (Focus Value Add) action fields belong to the FORCE Program areas that deal with activities in the production halls. The F3 area, whose guarantor is Roman Vinš, coordinator of PSI/21 – IE Car Production of MB I, specialises mainly in the productivity of actual production lines. The F2 area, which is supervised by Josef Ditrich, coordinator of PFS-K/1 – Series Planning – Press Shop, focuses, among other things, on permanently simplifying and automating production processes.

The FORCE Program has been running at the carmaker since 2019. How do you perceive your involvement in it?

Ditrich: I see being a member of the FORCE team as a huge opportunity. For me, the challenge and motivation lie in me being able to work in a team of experienced managers from the carmaker’s different fields – quality, development and planning to industrial engineering, controlling and components. I can observe managers in various situations and draw on their experiences for my own personal development.

Vinš: The perception of action fields has changed a lot. In the early days, we focused on tracking and adherence to standards, but now we go more into detail in all the steps. This is also related to a change in thinking throughout the carmaker, where everyone now understands what added value is and why we are tracking its growth.

Even small process changes lead to increased productivity and quality in the long run.

What have you achieved in both action areas?

Ditrich: Since the inception of the FORCE Program, we’ve managed to make savings of EUR 8 million for our company, in addition to the international standardisation of processes at the individual plants and the deployment of new technologies in production. I consider the optimisation of door fitting in the production of the OCTAVIA and ENYAQ iV to be a particular success. It is now carried out by two employees instead of three. We’ve achieved this by using new production tools and stabilising the fitting process from the welding shop to assembly.

Vinš: The contribution of our field of action in recent years has exceeded EUR 15 million at both the Czech and Indian plants, and we’ve achieved a 30% improvement in value added. Our new focus is on service and support activities at our production plants. We focus on activities with the lowest added value, such as automating manual part loading.

Ditrich: From the automation point of view, the FoQus project is very interesting in our field. Instead of humans, a camera device controlled by artificial intelligence helps us to detect surface defects on the car body. This project proves the great teamwork with our Quality department. Its involvement is really very intense.

Does the brand’s offensive in the field of electromobility affect your field of action?

Vinš: We are the only plant in the VW Group that produces both combustion engine cars and electric cars on the same production line. This obviously increases complexity, and, therefore, the challenge for both fields of action is to balance this combined production to make it as effective as possible.

How are the contents of your action fields being changed by the newly introduced design language and the brand’s more consistent customer orientation?

Ditrich: The new design language certainly does not skimp on precision. Our team strives to offer even better products to our customers. Even for cars that will be on the market in the future, we’re looking for ways to produce them more effectively and with greater added value.

What do you think is the most common link between the F2 and F3 action fields?

Vinš: Our common goal is to continuously improve our productivity. In both fields of action, we strive to produce as many cars as possible at the lowest possible cost while making effective use of our current workers’ knowledge and skills.

Ditrich: What is also common is that both fields of action concern not only our Czech plants but our plants in India as well.  We value teamwork, deal with various ideas and always agree together on what is best for our company. ED

  • Green Future / Sustainability

    Sustainability is essential

Carmaker showcases the sustainable materials it is using or working on

he use of recyclable materials – ideally, those that have already been recycled once before – is key to the automotive industry’s sustainability. This applies to the body, chassis and, not least, the car’s interior. ŠKODA AUTO’s goal is to reach a material recovery and internal recycling rate of at least 95%. At its T1 detached worksite in Bezděčín at the end of September, the company presented journalists from all over Europe to the sustainable materials it uses.

In an introductory presentation, the Board members explained how ŠKODA approaches sustainability and sustainable materials and also informed the journalists about the targets they have in every area. In addition, they looked at the topic of sustainability from the perspective of innovation. The journalists had the opportunity to learn about the individual topics in more detail and to discuss them with experts and supplier representatives. For example, the Technical Development staff gave them an overview of the current sustainable materials and visions, and the ED – ŠKODA Design department outlined its vision of sustainability as well.

At the material selection stage for the new car, Technical Development takes into account the recyclability of the raw materials used. One of the objectives is, therefore, to increase the proportion of so-called mono materials (products consisting of only one type of material) that can be recycled most efficiently. Interior designers are increasingly using textile upholstery where leather otherwise tends to be used, for example, in dashboards. Depending on the model, leather is used, for example, only on the centre of the seat, the steering wheel, the handbrake handle and partly on the gear lever. Fabrics made from up to 70% recycled PET bottles that are processed into yarn are already available for the ENYAQ iV and KAROQ model ranges. ŠKODA AUTO is also working to develop sustainable materials with natural components that will also be used in series production in the future. These include, among others, fibres from sugar beet, which are used to make the filler for plastic parts. ED

    Share, Inspire, Motivate

ŠKODA AUTO organised the second annual GreenWeek event for its employees and focused on sustainability

n the week of 19–23 September, the carmaker joined the Group’s goTOzero weeks with this special event. During these weeks, the individual brands of the VW Group organised campaigns and activities to raise awareness of sustainability issues in all areas of their operations. “Why?” you ask. As Board Chairman Klaus Zellmer emphasised in his invitation to the GreenWeek, sustainability is very important to everyone at ŠKODA AUTO. It is one of the major themes of this decade. The circular economy, which was the central theme of this year’s GreenWeek, also plays an important role in it. It represents a model of production and consumption that takes into account, among other things, the sharing, re-use, repair, refurbishment and recycling of existing materials and products.

The ambition of this year’s GreenWeek was to bring topics that resonate in the context of the circular economy, share experiences, inspire not only among the departments but also among the brands and, last but not least, motivate personal involvement. The four virtual mornings full of expert lectures, interviews, video spots and discussions were divided into thematic blocks and touched on circular design, circular economy strategy and good practice at ŠKODA AUTO, as well as circularity in everyday life and biodiversity.

In addition to the live broadcast, the event featured several accompanying activities. GreenWeek brought the Ecofilm Echos and a screening of the new family documentary Planet Prague to the Na Karmeli Education Centre in Mladá Boleslav. On the afternoon of Thursday, 22 September, the 1st ŠKODA SWAP took place there, where people had the opportunity to send in clothes and books that they no longer wanted or to get something nice in a sustainable swap. In cooperation of ŠKODA AUTO, the municipal administration and EKO-KOM, the Reverse Container experiment took place in Rychnov nad Kněžnou, where school pupils were shown the documentary Planet Czechia (Wilder than Wilderness), followed by a debate with the representatives of the Orlické Mountains Protected Landscape Area. In Vrchlabí, our employees completed the excursion entitled “Why is gentian so bitter?”, as well as the sensory trail “Darkness Before Me or Let’s Touch the Krkonoše Mountains”.

Of course, ŠKODA employees took part in the traditional volunteer clean-up events on Saturday, 17 September. Aramark, which provides meals for our employees, joined them. All week long, the restaurants offered a menu of dishes made from freshly ripened Czech peppers, along with new vegetarian recipes, including halloumi burger with hanácký salad or falafel with hummus, as well as pita bread. On the other hand, this week's menu has been lightened by the elimination of beef dishes. ED

    Innovation

    InnoDay 2022

The traditional employee event this year was full of non-traditional content again

ur employees saw the best examples of innovations at InnoDay 2022, this year’s innovation event, which took place at the ŠKODA Museum on 5 and 6 September. “We established the tradition of innovation days in 2018; since then, each of them has brought something new, in both its form and content. However, all the editions are united by the same motto, which is to connect and inspire people with the spirit of creating something new, which is how to keep the company competitive in the long term. Innovation is the prerequisite for current and future success with great customer satisfaction, as well as great financial results. The innovations presented here alone will save us a lot of money, for example, by reducing downtime in production facilities. So there is a wide range of innovations even in areas other than just the products we are selling to our customers, which is why seeing all kinds on innovations in one place is important,” according to Sascha Cubranic, Head of GSC – Corporate Strategy and Innovation Management.

    Across the carmaker

Our colleagues from different departments, ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab and ŠKODA AUTO India offered their 19 innovative projects to the visitors. The projects included current and recently implemented ones – from the use of artificial intelligence in logistics, smart diagnostic tools in quality and connectivity solutions for customers to Simply Clever ideas for greater car sustainability and intelligent process optimisation in human resources. Many of these inspiring visions are already yielding promising results in the pilot phase, in terms of both financial savings and automation or digitisation processes. An important stop on the marketplace was the joint stand of the innovation departments. Here, our employees got information about the company’s entire innovation ecosystem, consulted their ideas and learned how to take them to the implementation phase. The expert lectures and workshops sparked great interest as well. Registered visitors could, for example, learn about the latest innovations in the use of new technologies in production, as well as new approaches to communication in a virtual environment (see the article on the Purchasing virtual event).

What impressed me most was the spirit and enthusiasm with which the teams pursue their ideas – these people are helping to make ŠKODA ready for the future.

    Klaus Zellmer

    ŠKODA AUTO CEO

    Always something extra

A highly appreciated part of the programme was the exhibition of new technologies. The so-called EXPO focused on the digital life and digital home exhibits. In addition to T-Mobile’s extensive display, Adiquit, a company that offers its modern smoking cessation app and with which ŠKODA AUTO has long cooperated, was quite visible as well. The guests tried out our ENYAQ iV and the ŠKODA Click app. Students from the Czech Technical University (ČVUT) presented their own electric formula. The ŠKODA AUTO Vocational School representatives showed off their Watergen technology (see the issue of ŠKODA Mobil 7/2022) used in the AFRIQ student car, and the EDU.LAB exhibition was there too. On the second day of the event, a full-day online live stream of the event was available to everyone, full of interviews with the participants and information about innovations.

    Innovation enthusiasts

However, the innovation culture at ŠKODA AUTO does not only consist of events and projects, investments, set processes or adequate organisational structure. It is primarily the employees who bring it to life – especially those who are passionate about innovations, come up with new ideas and push the boundaries of what is possible. For four years, there has been a community of employees interested in innovation and have declared their willingness to help by registering on the IdeaSpace innovation portal. At InnoDay 2022, two members of this community – Zuzana Machů a coordinator from GQM/1 – Quality Data Analysis, and Lukáš Kousal, an expert coordinator of the pressing and automation process from PFO-P – Press Shop MBO – were selected and won a trip to the WEB Summit, the biggest technology festival in Europe.

85% of the visitors rated our InnoDay 2022 as very successful, and 98% said they would attend the event next year. The InnoTeam GSC is already thinking about innovations they will present at the next event. ED

    Purchasing

    Purchasing virtual event

An original Group-wide way of introducing new strategies and programmes

he VW Group has prepared a series of virtual events for the Purchasing area – so-called b.Camps. Their goal is to bring together buyers from all the brands from all the regions in one place on a long-term basis. Thanks to the interesting lectures and workshops, the buyers expand their digital knowledge and acquire new competencies that are important for coping with the challenges of the automotive transformation. At the same time, the entire Group’s purchasing ecosystem is connected, and closer collaboration among the brands is established.

    Czech footprint

After last year’s InnoDay 2021, the b.Camp organisers decided to use the proven platform of the Czech startup company Joinera and moved the event to the Metaverse. The company has built a large virtual world of 25 hectares with five stages, marketplace, well-being zone, chat zones and a showcase of the latest models of the Group’s brands. “Never before have we created a world as large and complex as b.Camp, and for the first time, we’ve integrated a hologram of a real person into the platform,” says Lukáš Cypra, co-founder and CEO of Joinera. Although some buyers found the idea of attending an event as an avatar unattractive, our satisfaction survey ultimately proved otherwise. “More than two-thirds of the participants rated the virtual b.Camp positively, and the same percentage said the event fulfilled its purpose,” said Jens Fraterman, who is responsible for the Bionic module implementation, about the findings

We have a lot to look forward to

The Metaverse does not end with corporate events. Virtual technology is already making inroads into the development of new cars and improving the customer experience, for example with the VRUT application. Increasingly, the Metaverse will also influence marketing, sales and customer strategy to new engaging ways of presenting and interacting more directly with our customers. ED

  • Children camps / Interview

    Children camps / Interview

    Among the campers

Maren Gräf, Board Member for the People & Culture area, and Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union, jointly reflect on their visit to the Jetřichovice and Nedamov summer camps for children

How did you enjoy this year’s visit to both camps?

Gräf: I visited the camps for the second time, and it was wonderful. This time, the new CEO, Klaus Zellmer, joined us and was very enthusiastic. I’m glad the children are being looked after so well. It was great to see them having fun and getting involved in their mixed age groups. We were able to join them in their activities, and the highlight for me was singing the Czech song “Není nutno” with them. An amazing job is being done by everyone involved with the little campers.

Povšík: First of all, I’m older now, but it takes me back to my childhood when I see how the children play, their gestures and their natural activity. Secondly, I’m responsible for organising these camps and for the contracts with the staff on behalf of the union, so I often see how it all works and whether everyone is happy – from the interns to the camp leaders and, of course, the children. I also keep a really strict eye on whether the camp is technically sound, what could be improved and what could be invested in, like new game elements.

The teams that look after the children at the camps with such a warm heart and enthusiasm do a fantastic job.

    Maren Gräf

Board Member for People & Culture

Did you also go to summer camps as a child?

Gräf: Yes, when I was 11, 12 and 13, and I have only good memories. I always had a lot of fun thanks to the live music and went home with a lot of new friends. It was an adventure. At the same time, I learned a lot of practical skills there and also how to be open and social – to communicate with others, network and share responsibilities in a team.

Povšík: Unfortunately, my parents didn’t send me to summer camps. With one exception, when I was finishing ninth grade and was sent to a great travelling camp. I still wonder how liberal the leaders were about it and what they let us do. I really experienced everything there – friendship and platonic love – and applied some of what I knew, tested and compared myself with others, won at sports and knowledge games and even made a friend from that time. What stung was that I got a tiny allowance from my parents, and the other kids were buying popsicles, chips and candy, but I couldn’t. Another story happened when I served in the army in Zbiroh and Mariánské Lázně. At that time, they were looking for someone to help with the children at such a suburban camp, and it was a wonderful opportunity to occasionally “get away” from the strict and rigid rules of the army at that time. I found that I enjoyed working with children, and I even got a certificate from that time, as I had to complete a rigorous course.

I’m very happy that children from orphanages and, this year, also Ukrainian

children attend our children’s camps. So we can share our values and the values of our trade union.

    Jaroslav Povšík

Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union

What are the plans for these recreational facilities in the future?

Gräf: ŠKODA AUTO fully supports this fantastic project initiated by the KOVO Trade Union. It is the union and Jaroslav Povšík who deserve a big thank you for how warmly and sensitively they run these camps. The summer holidays can be a stressful time, so it’s good for parents to know that their children are being looked after in wonderful camps surrounded by nature and given time to relax. If the kids are happy, their parents are happy!

Povšík: In any case, the goal is to keep this working, and in fact, our visit with CEO Klaus Zellmer and Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture, confirmed that this is what both sides wish for. Of course, as in the past, we constantly modify our camps and invest heavily in them. The children also change all the time. They react differently to nature and modern technology, and there are some games that they are no longer completely familiar with, but others appeal to them. Everything can be arranged; it always takes a few passionate people who are not out to make money but to do something for the world, our children and their parents.

Is there a similar cooperation between the company and the trade union somewhere else in the VW Group?

Gräf: I don’t know of any. Mr. Povšík, would you have any information about this?

Povšík: I’ve never heard of a project like this in our company, and the individual Board members who have rotated in and out of ŠKODA AUTO from all the VW Group locations have expressed similar views. So we’re probably the only ones who do this activity. And to be clear, both KOVO Trade Union and ŠKODA AUTO participate in the camps together, both financially and in terms of personnel, and we’re also greatly assisted by Aramark, which perfectly provides professional all-day catering. ED

    Unusual visit

On Tuesday, 23 August 2022, a pleasant surprise awaited the participants of the last rounds of our children’s camps. Klaus Zellmer, Chairman of ŠKODA AUTO’s Board of Directors, and his wife, Susanne, along with Maren Gräf, Board Member for People and Culture, Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union, and Ariane Kilian, the new Head of the GK – Communications department, headed to Nedamov and Jetřichovice. Accompanied by the main camp leaders, Luděk Švejdar (Jetřichovice) and Michal Krákora (Nedamov), they toured both camps and learned about the interesting moments from the history and present of the camps, as well as their organisation. The children were busy with their own daily programme, which the guests were able to look into. They were also happy to participate in several games, for example, singing with the children or trying out some of the disciplines of the ongoing camp Olympics. The children saw the prototype cars created by the SOU students as part of the Azubi Car programme, as well as cars that represent ŠKODA’s electric future. In Jetřichovice, they admired the AFRIQ, which this year’s group of students were responsible for, and the ENYAQ COUPÉ iV, while the SLAVIA and the racing FABIA Rally2 evo headed to Nedamov. The guests at both camps jointly planted the national tree (i.e. the linden tree) to kick off the autumn planting of deciduous trees that will support forest regeneration in the immediate vicinity of the camps.

After the camp tour, the programme continued in the dining hall. In his speech, K. Zellmer reminisced about his childhood, when he went to summer camps as well, and thanked the KOVO Trade Union for organising the children’s camps. He presented the leaders of both camps with financial support cheques, which will be used to build a new Robinson-style facility in Jetřichovice and renovate the facilities in Nedamov. M. Gräf greeted the children in Czech and mentioned that good traditions are to be kept, so she brought delicious cakes for the children, just like last year. They had the logo of this year’s all-camp game on them and were made by confectioners from Aramark. J. Povšík also spoke a few warm words to the children and presented them with gifts from the ŠKODA brand collection.

Despite the cloudy weather and rain showers, the whole day was filled with children’s smiles and a happy mood among all the participants. The children were so enthusiastic about the visit that the guests had to stay long and willingly sign their diaries or their hands. ED

    Finance and IT

    Together again

After the long COVID-19 pandemic, our colleagues from the F area finally had a big meeting again

ednesday, 7 September, was a special day for the Finance and IT staff. A packed programme divided into two parts awaited them during their day-long event. First, they headed to the ŠKODA Museum, where a number of interesting presentations took place. Christian Schenk, Board Member for Finance and IT, began by talking about the current financial situation, as well as the carmaker’s new corporate identity. Hauke Stars, the Group’s Board Member for IT, was visiting ŠKODA for the very first time and presented her IT strategy. Vladimír Lebedzev, Head of FCV-1 – Controlling Pricing, and Jakub Šanda, Expert Coordinator for Sustainability Strategy from GSC – Corporate Strategy and Innovation Management, introduced the topic of Environmental Social Governance. This topic is also one of the 21 projects of the Finance and Law Strategy (more in the issue of ŠKODA Mobil 8/2022).

In the last presentation of the morning programme, Björn Kröll, Head of VP – Product Marketing, and Stefan Wünschmann, Head of GSO – Integrated Planning & Product Process Management, gave joint insights into the design of the cars in the pipeline in the coming years. At the end of this part of the programme, the participants explored the ŠKODA ENYAQ COUPÉ RS iV. In the afternoon, the programme continued with an informal F(inally) Together event next to the Jizera River. ED

Požádá-li Soutěžící o informaci o zpracování svých osobních údajů, je mu správce a případně i zpracovatel povinen tuto informaci bez zbytečného odkladu předat.

Pořadatel si vyhrazuje právo i bez uvedení důvodů Dobu soutěže zkrátit, Soutěž přerušit nebo zrušit či změnit její Pravidla, a to i bez udělení výhry a bez poskytnutí náhrad. Pořadatel si rovněž vyhrazuje právo nahradit ohlášenou výhru předmětem podobného typu a odpovídající hodnoty a upravit podmínky předání výhry v případě, že výhra nebude poskytnuta způsobem umožňujícím předání výhry vítězům v souladu s těmito Pravidly.
