  • Dedication and flexibility

Andreas Dick has been the Board Member for Production and Logistics since last September. Since then, he has quickly grown into the role and is focused on guiding the carmaker through a period of transformation. In this interview, you will learn what matters most in terms of production and how challenging it is to produce electric cars compared with their combustion engine counterparts.

    Interview

Flexibility is the Key to Success

Andreas Dick has been Board Member for Production and Logistics since last September. Since assuming this role, he has quickly adapted and is now focused on guiding the carmaker through a challenging period of transformation.

When Andreas Dick learned that he would be joining the Škoda Auto Board of Directors, he was delighted. The manager with a technical background values the ingenuity of the Czech brand’s employees and points to the company’s remarkable flexibility as the key to its success. However, he acknowledges that the carmaker needs to undergo a significant transformation, which involves not only transitioning to electromobility but also placing greater emphasis on reducing environmental impacts and boosting production efficiency. According to him, Škoda Auto is in an excellent position to handle the transformation successfully.

What does 2024 look like for Škoda Auto in terms of production so far?

I would say pretty well. To date, we’ve produced more cars this year than last, and I must stress that we have managed to do this despite introducing several new products recently. Last year, we started production of the new Superb in Bratislava, the Kodiaq in Kvasiny and updates to the Kamiq and Scala, with the Octavia following recently in Mladá Boleslav. Handling so many consecutive innovations is unusual for production, and we’re managing it very well.

That sounds promising. Are there any particular challenges?

Of course. One example is the fluctuating demand for electric cars, which we have to respond to. We’ve been producing more cars with internal combustion engines than we had planned, and that is leading to some parts shortages that we need to address.

Is there anything that has pleasantly surprised you about production at Škoda Auto?

Before joining the carmaker, I knew that it was a very flexible company, able to respond to market challenges and part supply issues. However, experiencing the extent of this flexibility and the ability to make the most of it has really surprised me.

Does Škoda Auto boast any exceptional technical solutions in terms of production?

One thing is helping us a lot at the moment: We’re a VW Group brand that produces both electric and combustion engine cars on the same production line. This poses a big technical challenge, but it grants us considerable flexibility, especially given the current market volatility.

The biggest current challenge is the fluctuating demand for electric cars. We must work hard to transition from combustion engine cars to electric ones, maintaining a careful balance.

What are the current trends in car production?

There are several. Technology is constantly evolving, which means automation is being applied in more and more areas. Other trends like artificial intelligence and digitisation are also becoming more prevalent. In general, the way cars are manufactured is also changing, with a significant emphasis on sustainability, which is profoundly influencing production methods.

What does the carmaker do to increase the sustainability of production?

A great deal. A lot of it has to do with reducing CO2 emissions. This includes installing photovoltaic power plants on our facility roofs, switching to biogas for heating the paint shop and planning a major upgrade at ŠKO-ENERGO’s facilities to switch to biomass combustion by the end of the decade, which will mean a shift to CO2-neutral production. We are also constantly working on new sustainable materials and have reduced waste paint in our paint shop, for example.

What do you think matters most in terms of production?

Ultimately, it is always most important that production be cost-effective. Škoda cars are renowned for their quality and affordability. That is why we must constantly focus on cutting production costs. Equally important is designing new cars to ensure that they can be smoothly and economically integrated into production, without excessive additional investments or time.

What will happen to the Force Program? Are you planning to transform it?

Yes, it is awaiting change. The Force Program was created five years ago and has yielded numerous great results, but times are changing. In the current phase of transformation, we are seeing numerous fundamental changes; for example, in how cars are produced. This requires us to focus on other areas, but we will preserve elements of the original plan.

What is the new production strategy to be based on?

There are three basic pillars. The first is creating a timeless factory by transforming our plants. The second pillar focuses on operational excellence, especially cost reduction. And the third pillar, leadership and accountability, centres on people, who are critical to any transformation. We also need to focus more on expanding our international presence to secure the future of the Škoda brand, particularly in India and the markets of the ASEAN (Southeast Asia – ed.) region.

What role does artificial intelligence play in manufacturing?

It can be used to improve quality and productivity for advanced automation and other purposes. We already use neural networks that learn and help us fundamentally improve production equipment maintenance, as well as a camera system that monitors our conveyors. AI also optimises logistics, such as maximising shipping space and planning truck routes. I also see that we have a lot of employees who are passionate about leveraging AI. Sometimes, it is incredibly easy and fast. It is a playground for us to be more and more active in the future.

What challenges does Škoda Auto face in the field of electric cars, and how is it prepared for them?

We are well-prepared for the era of electric cars. We have a successful Enyaq family of models, and soon, we’ll be introducing the new Elroq electric car. However, the biggest challenge in this regard is the fluctuating demand for electric vehicles. Therefore, we must work hard to manage the transition from combustion engine cars to electric cars, ensuring a careful balance. Our employees are already geared up for increased electric car production.

Škoda Auto is particularly well-known for its dedicated employees who love their work. This presents a significant opportunity for our future.

Comparing combustion engine cars with electric cars, which is more challenging to produce?

In essence, both are just cars. However, there are specific considerations, such as the significant weight of electric vehicles, which requires the correct dimensioning of the entire production line and the adjustment of conveyor systems. With electric cars, safety measures concerning electric currents must be addressed. Despite these factors, the overall differences in production are not extensive.

How difficult would it be to switch to producing only electric cars? Are you preparing for that?

Currently, we are capable of producing the Enyaq electric model on the same line as the Octavia with an internal combustion engine. This flexibility allows us to produce more of one or the other model as needed. In terms of production, we are actively planning for a complete shift towards an electric future, which I strongly believe in. Our task is to prepare our plants for this shift, determining the timing and specifics of the transition. That is the difficult part, but we’re ready for it.

What do you think is most important in terms of efficiency in the future? People, energy or materials?

Of course, input costs are crucial. We have to keep an eye on energy prices, strive for CO2 neutrality and also focus on materials, particularly as we move towards more intensive use of renewable, recycled and recyclable products, which have their own production requirements. However, the key element is always people. If you wish to be successful, you need people who are dedicated, especially during transformative periods. In a fast-changing environment, our team must be eager to learn and adapt. We need to think about how to guide our employees through the transformation and help them grow with us since we need their ideas. At Škoda Auto, we are known for our committed employees who love their work. And this is where a great opportunity lies for us moving forward.

Are the demands for greater efficiency related to electric cars or conventional cars? Or both?

In this case, both. Our goal is to produce as efficiently as possible to offer the best value for money to our customers, and production costs play a major role in this, regardless of whether the vehicle is electric or has a combustion engine.

Do you have a favourite car in the Škoda portfolio?

That is a very tough question because I actually have three favourites. The first is the historic Škoda Superb from 1930, an amazing car, especially in terms of design. The next one, which I immediately fell in love with when I joined the carmaker, is the Spartak, which I drove during one of my first weekends with Škoda at the Classic Tour. From our current portfolio, I like the new Kodiaq in its plug-in hybrid version.

Has your family moved to the Czech Republic with you? Do you have any favourite places or food here?

Yes. My family and I live in Prague, where my children go to school, and I really enjoy the city. Prague is simply amazing. Of course, we’ve already taken some trips nearby, visiting places like Karlštejn and Karlovy Vary. However, at this point, we’re still exploring the capital city. There’s so much to see, and we still haven’t seen everything we want to. Prague also offers great food. It’s a wonderful place to live.

How do you feel about the atmosphere at Škoda Auto?

When I got the offer to join the Board of Directors, I was very pleased. I think it’s a fantastic company, largely thanks to its employees. I had worked with some of the Škoda Auto team in my previous job and was always impressed by their attitude and way of working. They focus on finding solutions, don’t overthink problems and are very flexible.

The fourth edition of L’Etape Czech Republic, which offers amateur cyclists the chance to experience the atmosphere of the world’s most famous race, featured cycling star Alberto Contador.

    Event

Similar to the legendary Tour de France, L’Etape Czech Republic enjoys significant support from Škoda Auto. But the similarities don’t end there. The event is marked by a festive cycling atmosphere at both the start and finish lines, fans with creative decorations along the route, completely dedicated roads and top-class facilities, including the director‘s car: an Enyaq. This year’s fourth edition took place on Saturday, 15 June, from Strahov in Prague to the traditionally hilly terrain of the Křivoklát area and back.

The fastest was Petr Fiala, who completed the main route in 3:23:52 hours. He surpassed some notable names in the starting field. “The route was beautiful,” said Contador, a two-time Tour de France winner. “It was my first time racing in the Czech Republic, and I could truly experience the great Czech passion for cycling. I was overwhelmed by the support we received.” He started the race at the front, but then shifted to a relaxed pace, stopping to chat with fans. Zdeněk Štybar, accompanied by his former personal mechanic from Belgium, a 67-year-old cancer survivor, also took a leisurely approach, although the pair still covered the track at an average speed of 29 km/h!

Also in the peloton was Martina Sáblíková, three-time Olympic speed skating champion and L’Etape Czech Republic ambassador, who has completed all previous editions. After the race, she also praised the fans all along the route.

Registrations are also already open for next year’s edition of both variants of L’Etape Czech Republic.

In the meantime, you can be inspired by watching the Tour de France, which starts on 29 June in Florence and culminates on 21 July with an unconventional time trial from Monaco to Nice. Then in August, the eight-stage Tour de France Femmes by Zwift will take place, starting in Rotterdam and finishing above the legendary serpentines of Alpe d’Huez. For both races, Škoda Auto traditionally provides the support fleet, glass trophies for the winners and the green jersey for the sprint points leader.

  • The origin of Curiosity Fuel coffee

The sustainable coffee of Škoda Auto’s own brand, which will be available in all the Czech carmaker’s plants from the summer, primarily comes from family farms in India, with some from Tanzania in Africa. It is grown sustainably, as certified by the Rainforest Alliance. The farms contribute to increasing biodiversity and are also socially important.

About the Origin of Curiosity Fuel Coffee

Škoda Auto’s own-brand sustainable coffee, which will be available at all the carmaker’s Czech plants starting this summer, comes from family farms. How is it grown there?

You will already be familiar with Curiosity Fuel coffee (mentioned in the May 2024 issue of Škoda Mobil), and perhaps you’ve even tasted it or drink it regularly. It will soon be available across all Škoda Auto operations in the Czech Republic, including restaurants and cafés. But where does its journey begin? The vast majority of the coffee comes from family farms in India, with a portion from Tanzania in Africa. All of it is grown sustainably, a fact certified by the Rainforest Alliance.

Now, we’ll take a closer look at three Indian farmers who cultivate both arabica and robusta coffee types for Curiosity Fuel. They are Roshan Divaker, Dhanush Mavinahally and Anil Kuchally, who manage land ranging from 50,000 to more than 160,000 m2 in Karnataka, southwest India. This tropical region, with abundant rainfall and plantations located in the Western Ghats at about 1 kilometre above sea level, is ideal for coffee trees. The farmers manually harvest only ripe coffee cherries in several rounds. On the same day, the beans are stripped of their skins and dried in the sun. Next, the beans are sent to the family roasting plant in Bezděčín for further processing.

    Manually and gently

Coffee growing on these three farms is in harmony with nature. The farmers have preserved numerous native trees on the plantations, which provide shade and increase biodiversity by serving as a refuge for birds, bees and other animals. “We use a multi-crop system on the plantations that helps us to preserve various native tree species, which is very useful for maintaining and supporting soil health and microflora. This also helps to prevent soil erosion and the rise of the water table,” said D. Mavinahally. In addition to the traditional mix of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, the farms also use cow manure from local cattle farmers to fertilise the land. The social importance of the farms is also significant – they provide numerous jobs for people in the surrounding area.

    Rainforest Alliance

Certified agriculture emphasises sustainability, conservation and improved conditions for farmers and local communities. The Rainforest Alliance promotes practices that include protecting biodiversity, reducing the use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers and conserving natural resources, especially water and soil. Farm workers participating in this programme enjoy better working conditions and receive fairer pay. Rainforest Alliance–certified coffee and other products can be recognised by the green frog logo.

    Clean Up the Czech Republic

    How Škoda employees help nature

Škoda Auto, in cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union, has been actively involved in cleaning up nature every spring and autumn since 2015 as part of its commitment to environmental protection and sustainability under its GreenFuture strategy. Škoda volunteers (including employees and their family members, interns, trainees and students from the Škoda Auto Vocational School) participate in these clean-ups. As part of its involvement in the nationwide Clean Up the Czech Republic campaign, the carmaker focuses on waste collection in the regions of its plants: the Mladá Boleslav, Rychnov and Vrchlabí regions. Individual departments across Škoda Auto also organise team meetings as a separate activity (see Other volunteer events of this year).

“Sustainability is a key part of Škoda Auto’s strategy, as demonstrated by our wide range of activities aimed at environmental protection,” says Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture. “In cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union, we emphasise the benefits of personal involvement of each individual. I greatly appreciate the participation of all volunteers and thank the conservationists for their long-term help with the environment around our plants, not only during the Clean Up the Czech Republic challenge and Earth Day celebrations.”

This year’s clean-ups under the carmaker’s auspices started in Mladá Boleslav in April, continued in Vrchlabí in May and near Kvasiny in early June.

This year’s clean-up events involved almost 250 volunteers who collectively gathered more than 8.1 tonnes of waste in their free time.

    Mladá Boleslav region

This year, volunteers first headed to the forests of Martinovice on 6 April, located under the municipality of Březno near Mladá Boleslav. The organisation of the meeting was managed by ČSOP Klenice (Czech Union of Nature Conservationists). The Klenice River, mainly known to mushroom pickers, also originates in this area. Thanks to this event, it was possible to clear it of waste that has been accumulating since the 1980s. Volunteers collected various items such as cables, tyres, glass and plastic bottles, as well as old clothes from local illegal dumping sites known as “shards”. In total, nearly 5 tonnes of waste was removed from the site. “A big thank you to all the volunteers, as well as our partner organisation, ČSOP Klenice, and František Vondráček, a local forester, for the waste removal and the insightful lecture about local fauna and flora,” adds Michal Kadera, Head of the SR – External Affairs department.

    Vrchlabí region

Employees from the production plant in Vrchlabí, along with the organising administration of the Krkonoše National Park, set out to clean up the Medvědín ski slope on 18 May. The event in the mountainous environment attracted many people who combined spending time in nature with helping the forests. Here, they collected approximately 3 tonnes of waste.

    Rychnov region

On 2 June, the spring round of clean-ups concluded with an event near Šerlich in the Orlické Mountains, where employees and other volunteers from the Kvasiny plant traditionally participated. The popular tourist spot prompted local conservationists from ČSOP Prorubky to focus on the mountain ridge and surrounding forests.

    Info

Sustainable development, environmental friendliness and resource conservation are core values at Škoda Auto. The carmaker’s main goal is to minimise its ecological footprint throughout the entire value chain, a commitment it has pursued for more than 10 years through its GreenFuture strategy. In addition, in line with the VW Group’s new sustainability strategy called regenerate+ (see the May 2024 issue of Škoda Mobil), it supports the preservation of biodiversity and sustainable ecosystems. For a comprehensive overview of the environmental measures, please see the sustainability page of the Škoda Storyboard online magazine.

Other volunteer events of this year

Škoda employees and individual teams are also involved in various clean-up activities through the Škoda Volunteers employee group. They help in removing windbreaks and self-seeding plants from nature, restoring pools and ponds and helping to mow meadows. Here is a list of a few of this year’s events.

    Green Logistics

The Green Logistics team is dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of logistics. For the third year, members of the team visited the Krkonoše National Park (KRNAP) to help with forest restoration. This year, the chosen site was in the Harrachov–Rýžoviště area, where the logistics team cleared windbreaks of branches and trunk stumps to make room for the new trees to grow.

    Interns

Škoda logistics interns focused on clearing self-seeding plants and brambles in a forest meadow near Vlkava. Within a few years, this area had become completely overgrown with self-seeded bushes and trees, displacing the highly endangered purple lady orchids. This site was one of only four places in the Mladá Boleslav region where these orchids still grew.

    Technical Service Assembly Shops

In May, employees of the PFS-M – Technical Service Assembly Shops department, in cooperation with the local KRNAP administration, took part in a volunteer event to clear the forest area in Benecko of branches and logging debris.

    Trainers and coaches

Employees of VAQ – Sales and After Sales Training Academy cleaned up the area behind the former meat processing plant in Kosmonosy. Within a few hours, they collected several bags of garbage, tyres and other litter, ridding the nature of unnecessary and, for some animals, potentially dangerous waste.

    Production System

Volunteers from the PSI-P – Production System department removed non-native self-seeded pine trees in the Bohemian Paradise near Žehrovský Forest. Since commonly used machinery could not be employed, the task required manpower, lever shears, hand saws and more. The employees tackled this challenge with enthusiasm, and within a few hours of intensive work, they cut down a significant number of trees, helping to rid the forest of non-native species.

    Serial Pilot Hall

Employees from the PF1/1 – Pilot Hall MB I department were tasked with removing self-seeding plants and cutting brambles and old grass on the Vyskeř Hill. Under the supervision of the Bohemian Paradise Protected Landscape Area staff, they cleared a considerable amount of self-seeding plants from the top of the hill, which featured relatively difficult and sloping terrain, and burned a large part of it.

    5. Výhra v Soutěži

    Výhrou je následující cena:

    3x balíčky reklamních předmětů Škoda.

    6. Kontaktování Výherce a podmínky čerpání výhry

    7. Pravidla ochrany osobních údajů (v souladu s GDPR 2016/679)

Vyplněním kvízu a vyluštěním osmisměrky a zasláním odpovědí na výše uvedenou e-mailovou adresu Soutěžící vědomě a dobrovolně souhlasí s Pravidly soutěže (viz tento dokument), což znamená:

    – zařazení do soutěže a příslušné evidence Soutěžících;

    – zasílání informačních e-mailů týkajících se této Soutěže;

Požádá-li Soutěžící o informaci o zpracování svých osobních údajů, je mu správce a případně i zpracovatel povinen tuto informaci bez zbytečného odkladu předat.

Pořadatel si vyhrazuje právo i bez uvedení důvodů Dobu soutěže zkrátit, Soutěž přerušit nebo zrušit či změnit její Pravidla, a to i bez udělení výhry a bez poskytnutí náhrad. Pořadatel si rovněž vyhrazuje právo nahradit ohlášenou výhru předmětem podobného typu a odpovídající hodnoty a upravit podmínky předání výhry v případě, že výhra nebude poskytnuta způsobem umožňujícím předání výhry vítězům v souladu s těmito Pravidly.
