VWITS will initially employ 30 IT professionals in Prague.

New IT hub to deepen cooperation with India

Volkswagen Group Technology Solutions India (VWITS), the Group‘s IT centre employing more than 2,600 professionals in India, has opened its regional office in Prague‘s AFI City building in cooperation with Škoda Auto. This is another important step on the road to digitalisation and the development of cutting-edge software solutions. The state‑of‑the‑art Czech facility will focus on developing application portfolios and using artificial intelligence, data analytics and technology services. Above all, however, its goal will be to strengthen links with Indian colleagues by enabling work exchanges and internships, among others. “Through this close cooperation, we can build and maintain internal know-how within the VW Group, lessen our dependence on external suppliers for business-critical tasks and, last but not least, reduce IT operating and service costs,” said Hauke Stars, VW Group Board Member for IT. The AFI City building already houses other IT teams of the carmaker, including the SAP Group Competence Centre and the 42 Prague training institute.

Car for war veterans in Lviv

In Ukraine, disabled war veterans will receive driving training in a specially modified Octavia car equipped for manual control and fitted with driving school equipment. Škoda Auto, with the support of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic and in cooperation with the Foundation for Ukraine, donated the vehicle to the Centre of Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities in Halyčna. The centre operates in the city of Lviv, in the western part of Ukraine, and operates its own driving school. The vehicle handover took place on 24 February at the Concert for All Decent People, a fundraising evening held at Prague’s Forum Karlín.

    Attractive employer

Working at Škoda Auto is clearly an attractive prospect for Czech students, as demonstrated by the results of the TOP Employers 2024 study, in which the carmaker secured the top spot in the Automotive and Engineering Industry category. The ranking was based on the votes of 11,416 Czech university students. The carmaker also placed second in the special First Choice category, in which 4,118 high school students cast their votes. They were asked to spontaneously name their ideal employer, and Škoda Auto was the second most preferred.

eRally Cup on a new platform

Škoda’s official e-sport series, now in its fourth year, began a new season in March on the official EA Sports WRC World Rally Championship game. The series consists of four sub-tournaments, which will be played consecutively throughout the year. All results count towards the final standings, which will be announced after the last live final round on 15 December. The overall winner will receive a free loan of an Octavia RS.

Do you have a 3D printer at home? Now you can print Škoda models in 1:72 and 1:24 scale. The carmaker has provided data for printing the Octavia and Enyaq Coupé on the printables.com platform, and more will be coming. The Škoda Storyboard website features the best creations from the competition for the print community.

    Simulator already serving patients

On 20 February, the Klaudián Hospital in Mladá Boleslav started using the Scala simulator that Škoda Auto had donated at the end of last year. Patients who have had hip or knee surgery and people with limited mobility use it to practise getting in and out of the car. This training aids in adapting to everyday life and overcoming driving challenges. The simulator, which has a full interior but no powertrain, is available to patients in inpatient, outpatient and rehabilitation departments.

More years with the Tour de France

Škoda Auto has signed new contracts until 2028 with the Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), GFR and Unipublic, which organise cycling races. The partnership covers the Tour de France and its women‘s equivalent, the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, as well as 18 other events including the Spanish stage race La Vuelta and the monuments Paris-Roubaix and Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Minister of Education visits 42 Prague Institute

On 28 February, Minister of Education Mikuláš Bek explored the innovative approach to education of the 42 Prague Institute, which focuses on emerging IT positions roles and is founded by Škoda Auto, its main partner. He visited the institute with Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture, and Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union. The institute has seen extraordinary interest, with more than 10,000 applicants last year, almost 40% of whom were women. Around 200 students were selected. The institute is planning further development to accommodate more students.

Providing targeted support for aspiring young IT talent is crucial for Škoda Auto’s long-term readiness.

  • New Škoda Epiq crossover

The design study unveils the Škoda Epiq, a small electric city crossover that offers plenty of space for five people, a spacious boot and excellent functionality and practicality – all this at an affordable price of around EUR 25,000. The upcoming model, adopting the Modern Solid design language and with an emphasis on sustainability, aims to appeal to family-oriented and lifestyle customers.

    Topic

    Škoda Epiq: New City Crossover

The design study introduces one of six planned new electric Škoda cars. It will be a small urban crossover with an estimated price tag of around EUR 25,000, adopting the Modern Solid design language and focusing on sustainability.

The new Škoda Epiq electric city SUV crossover will offer exactly what customers expect from the Mladá Boleslav brand: plenty of space for five people, a spacious boot and excellent functionality and practicality, including a good range, all at a competitive price of around EUR 25,000. The model aims to appeal to family-oriented and lifestyle customers. It will be produced at the VW Group’s plant in Pamplona, Spain, as part of a joint project by the Brand Group Core comprising the Škoda, Volkswagen and Cupra brands.

“The design study of the Škoda Epiq delivers a modern look combined with a great range and user-friendly technologies, maintaining affordability as a key factor,” emphasised Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO.

The Škoda Epiq is set to make its debut next year and will be one of the six new all-electric models that the carmaker plans to introduce in the coming years. The first reveal, happening later this year, will be the new Elroq compact SUV.

The Škoda Epiq study embodies all the key attributes of our new Modern Solid design language, blending clever features and practicality with an attractive appearance and our commitment to sustainability.

    Oliver Stefani

Head of ED – Škoda Design

New interpretation of the brand’s traditional features

This model is based entirely on the Modern Solid design language, blending robustness, functionality and authenticity. The study is characterised by a distinctively shaped bonnet dominated by the Škoda lettering instead of the logo with a winged arrow. The classic front grille is revamped into a glossy black Tech-Deck Face mask that hides elements like the front camera and radar. It is framed by T-shaped LED lights for day mode and turn signals, with the main headlights situated below. The massive front bumper is complemented by a spoiler painted in Unique Dark Chrome.

The aerodynamically enhanced wheel arches are visually accented with a distinctive bar. The rear of the car boasts a dominant bumper and Škoda lettering in Unique Dark Chrome on the tailgate. The minimalist look of the Škoda Epiq is emphasised by the matte metallic paint in Moon White, with details on the roof rails, wheels and bumpers in Flashy Orange.

    400 km

The range of the new electric car will exceed this figure.

    4,1 m

    Functional interior, new technologies

The interior of the Škoda Epiq design study is notable for having an open storage compartment with wireless phone charging in the free-standing centre console, alongside characteristic Simply Clever features in the boot, such as practical bag hooks and a hidden compartment under the floor.

The two-spoke steering wheel with new Škoda lettering offers physical buttons and haptic sliders for functional control while driving and is decorated with elements in Flashy Orange. A new feature is the mobile digital key, which facilitates a wide range of interactions with the customer’s smart device, thereby enhancing the user’s digital experience. The Škoda Epiq also supports bi-directional charging, making the car a mobile electrical storage unit capable of powering the home and other appliances.

    Epic milestone

Why the name Škoda Epiq? Because this model will mark a new milestone in the Škoda brand’s history, and the name aligns perfectly with the convention for naming Škoda cars: The letter “E” at the beginning stands for purely battery-powered cars, and the “Q” at the end signifies SUVs. The name Škoda Epiq is inspired by the Greek word “epic”, which can be translated not only as “word” or “verse” but also as “story” and “poem”. People associate it with positive attributes, like amazing, great, exceptional and remarkable.

Škoda promises that this urban beauty will hit the market in 2025 with a price tag of EUR 25,000. Currently, you can purchase a Kamiq 1.5 TSI with automatic transmission, offering similar space and performance, for this amount. That’s actually not bad at all, is it?

    Auto-motor-und-sport.de

With the Škoda Epiq model, the Czech brand presents the counterpart to the previously announced Volkswagen ID.2, although the Czechs are focusing on the rugged look of an SUV in this affordable electric offering. The 4.1-metre Epiq could replace both the Fabia and the Kamiq. The displayed design study is likely to closely match the future production model’s external and internal appearance.

    Autorevue.cz

The Epiq will be the first production car with a minimalist interior in the Modern Solid concept. Inside, the focus will be on durable, practical and sustainable materials, with stylish touches like ambient lighting that stretches from the doors across the dashboard. The interior’s simplicity is reinforced by the open centre stack (equipped with wireless charging for mobile phones) and the absence of rotary Smart Dials. However, the classic physical buttons for the most basic functions remain.

    Carsguide.com.au

The study showcases an upcoming all-electric SUV of a city-friendly size that is poised to take on combustion rivals like the Mazda CX-3, Kia Stonic and Toyota Yaris Cross.

    Autosalon.tv

This car will be based on the MEB-Small platform, so it should use front-wheel drive, unlike the bigger Group EVs. It will be built in Spain, alongside its similarly small Cupra and Volkswagen siblings. It is not entirely clear from the photos, but it will be a really tiny crossover. A length of 4.1 m means this car will be as long as the current Škoda Fabia. However, thanks to the electric platform, the Škoda Epiq should be more spacious. The carmaker promises a five-seater interior and an extra-large boot.

  • Škoda’s growth in India

The Kushaq and Slavia vehicles developed on the MQB-A0-IN platform specifically for the Indian market will be complemented by an affordable all-new compact SUV in the first half of 2025. This move marks the carmaker’s move into a new phase of its strategy in the region. The model, which will also focus on local component sourcing, demonstrates the importance of the Indian market for Škoda Auto.

    From the world

New era for Škoda in India

The Czech carmaker is set to launch a brand-new compact SUV in the Indian market next year, with its name to be selected through a contest.

The Kushaq and Slavia cars developed on the MQB-A0-IN platform specifically for the Indian market will be complemented by an affordably priced all-new compact SUV boasting a length of under 4 metres, which is slated for release in the first half of 2025. The model will be the third Škoda vehicle based on this platform.

The carmaker will thus enter a new era of its strategy in the region, for which it has Group responsibility. This new model demonstrates the importance of the Indian market to Škoda Auto, and the company aims to further its internationalisation strategy with this car. “The Škoda brand is also taking giant strides on the global stage, with 18.5% growth in 2023 over the previous year. India is an important market for our growth, having recently surpassed 100,000 car sales in two years thanks to the locally developed and manufactured Slavia and Kushaq models. The all-new compact SUV will strengthen our position in India and underline the country’s importance to our global plans. Together with the Kushaq and Kodiaq, we will have an even more robust SUV portfolio in India, a key segment that accounts for more than 50% of the market,” said Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing.

Like the Kushaq and Slavia, the new compact SUV will focus on local sourcing for the individual parts. “We are systematically expanding our local supply chain to deliver components that meet global standards of quality at competitive prices,” said Piyush Arora, Managing Director and CEO of Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited.

    100,000

By 2026, Škoda aims to deliver this number of cars annually to its customers in India.

    Media coverage

The car’s name is still to be confirmed. This is because Škoda Auto has coupled the announcement of its launch with a contest inviting customers and brand enthusiasts on social media to suggest names that start with “K” and end with “Q”. The context drew tens of thousands of participants, generating significant publicity for the upcoming model even before its unveiling. The SUV has already been the subject of more than 1,500 news articles, features and reports across print and online media, as well as on television, reaching hundreds of millions of people in India.

Petr Janeba, the newly appointed brand director of Škoda Auto India, is also pleased. “With this new model, we’re committed to developing our team on all fronts. And we will do this through innovative approaches and pioneering formats to connect with both new and existing customers. We’ve already started training and workshops for our sales and after-sales network and are continuing our focus on customer satisfaction,” added Janeba.

The introduction of the new compact SUV is also seen as key step towards Škoda’s goal of becoming the top-selling European car brand in India by 2030, aiming for a 5% market share across all VW Group brands in the region.

    First containers to Vietnam

Preparations for assembling Škoda cars at the Vietnamese partner TCVH’s plant are well under way. The new Parts Expedition Centre at the Pune plant in India is operational, ready to export the complete (CKD) kits of the Kushaq and Slavia models (read more in the March 2024 issue of Škoda Mobil). The first containers were shipped from there in February, while the first container with 374 sets of parts destined for pre-production in Vietnam has been shipped from Mladá Boleslav and is expected to arrive at Haiphong port by the end of April. Plans include three more containers to be shipped from Mladá Boleslav this year. After the start of series production, up to 200 containers of CKD kits for Kushaq and Slavia cars should be shipped from India every week, with one or two containers per week from Mladá Boleslav.

    Another Porsche heads to Malaysia

For the third consecutive year, the VW Group’s PL – Brand Logistics department has overseen the Porsche Cayenne shipments to Malaysia. The department has now extended its collaboration with Porsche and at the end of February and the beginning of March to include the first shipments of the hybrid Cayenne PHEV model. Both car types are going to Malaysia in containers as part of the MKD medium distribution stage. The partnership is planned until 2030 and is expected to ship a total of up to 9,000 vehicles.

    International Bird Day

Are we doing enough to protect certain bird species?

Although 1 April is International Bird Day, bird populations are steadily declining. The main reasons for this are the limited availability of small habitats, the conversion of scattered greenery and flowery meadows into farmland, the felling of old trees with cavities and the planting of monoculture crops in fields and tree crops in forests. All of these actions have led to a significant decrease in the insect population in the countryside and, consequently, to the starvation of birds. Entire colonies of small, insect-eating birds are dying out. As a result, the population of birds of prey is declining because they rely heavily on smaller birds for food.

Perhaps the most endangered group in the Czech Republic is field birds, whose populations are rapidly declining: Skylarks and wagtails, little owls and crested larks are disappearing. Species that were once quite common in our rural landscape are now critically endangered. In fact, even the “common” sparrow was until recently considered a critically endangered species, and efforts to reintroduce this little mischief‑maker to the wild have been challenging.

    How we help the birds

Škoda Auto supports bird conservation through various projects and grants, in collaboration with local conservationists. Actions such as the planting of shrubs and groves, the restoration and planting of alleys or the regeneration of pools invariably enriches the sites in question with certain species of insects, which in turn supports bird populations. “I would like to single out two of the rare and declining species in the areas we look after. One of them is the wood lark, which is found in Vrchbělá. It is a highly endangered species that saw a significant decline in the second half of the 20th century. We contribute to the increase in its numbers in this area by regularly mowing the local meadows,” says Milada Vrbová from ČSOP Klenice. In Vrchbělá, they also focus on protecting the nighthawk, which thrives in the same environment.

ČSOP Klenice, along with volunteers from Škoda Auto employees in the Mladá Boleslav region, also takes care of stork nests. “The number of white storks is decreasing year by year due to extreme weather conditions, during which the fledglings die in the nests,” notes Vrbová. Protecting the nests of certain species is another example of how to increase their populations. A webcam allows the public to observe the annual nesting of a pair of falcons at the ŠKO‑ENERGO heating plant. This year, it was also the first monitored site where a female falcon laid eggs.

Regarding birdhouses, their placement in the landscape is also beneficial. For example, the ones constructed by the pupils of the Mladá Boleslav Integrated Secondary School can be found not only on the premises of the school and Dr. Pírek Hospital but also in Štěpánka Park, Radouč Forest Park and the newly created community garden in Jabkenice.

Number of birds in the Czech Republic

    13%

About one-seventh of all bird species are considered endangered to some extent.

    60

The Czech Republic has this number of specially protected bird species: the osprey, the kingfisher, the buzzard and 57 other species. In addition to these, 29 are endangered.

    33.5%

This is the decline in bird populations across the Czech agricultural landscape since 1982. During that time, the population of common species decreased by 5.4%, and that of forest species by 14.9%.

    230

A total of 190 bird species breed in the Czech Republic, and another 40 regularly migrate through the territory. Of these, over 143 species are listed on the Red List of Endangered Animals.

    Prevention and safe behaviour

In April, designated as Safety Month, the focus on prevention and employee safety concerning intra-company transport and the operation of handling equipment is emphasised. That is why the PSU – Environmental and Work Protection department has prepared an information campaign on the principles of safe behaviour. The most serious accidents are caused by human error – either pedestrian carelessness or driver inattention. A collision between a pedestrian and handling equipment can have serious consequences, so by behaving responsibly, you are protecting your health. By following the set rules, you prevent unnecessary injuries and contribute to Škoda Auto’s low accident rate.

    GreenFuture

    Principles of safe walking

    1

Pay careful attention while walking inside, especially around handling equipment operations.

    2

Maintain disciplined and considerate behaviour on pedestrian-designated paths.

    3

Use marked pedestrian corridors and pedestrian crossings.

    4

Look carefully when crossing the road.

    5

Keep to the left on routes without designated pedestrian paths.

    6

Do not enter a pedestrian crossing or a road designated for handling equipment right in front of an oncoming power trolley.

    7

Pay increased attention around power trolleys engaged in material handling or reversing.

    8

Signal to the power trolley driver before undertaking non-standard activities in their operating area.

    9

Respect the prohibition on entering material handling and logistics areas and do not take shortcuts through halls or areas unrelated to your work.

    10

As a pedestrian, you do not automatically have the right of way at crossings.

    11

    Follow traffic and safety signs.

  • Summary of a successful year

At the annual press conference on 15 March, the carmaker’s management highlighted the increased deliveries of new cars, the excellent economic results and how Škoda Auto has managed 2023 overall. It has also successfully continued to implement its internationalisation and electrification strategies. The press conference was followed by the traditional MMI management meeting.

    Results

    Year of Record-Breaking Revenues

Annual press conference: Škoda Auto marked an important year in 2023 as it demonstrated a robust business model through its revenues and successfully continued to pursue its internationalisation and electrification strategies.

Tom Drechser, Head of GC – Communications, and Board Members Klaus Zellmer, Holger Peters, Martin Jahn, Maren Gräf, Andreas Dick, Johannes Neft and Karsten Schnake.

At the annual press conference on 15 March, Škoda Auto’s management celebrated both the increase in new car deliveries and the excellent economic results. The carmaker saw nearly a 20% surge in car deliveries to customers over the previous year, totalling 866,800 vehicles. By far the largest increase was recorded by the all-electric Enyaq whose deliveries rose by a remarkable 52.1% year on year.

Financially, the Škoda Auto Group achieved record revenue of EUR 26.5 billion (nearly CZK 670 billion) in 2023, significantly boosting its operating profit to EUR 1.8 billion (approximately CZK 45 billion) and more than doubling its return on sales to 6.7%. This indicator shows the ratio between the company’s profit after tax and its total revenue.

Škoda Auto achieved these results despite a challenging market environment, geopolitical uncertainties, the rising prices of materials and raw materials and declining purchasing power. The carmaker will use this foundation to make further large-scale investments in its future development.

    Outlook for 2024

Škoda will launch a model campaign by the end of the year, including six new electric cars set to be released in the coming years. The starting point will be the world premiere of the Škoda Elroq compact SUV, the brand’s first electric model in the new Modern Solid design language. It will be followed the next year by the affordable Škoda Epiq urban electric SUV. The carmaker is investing billions of euros in its ongoing transformation towards electromobility in the upcoming years.

    Model lines

The Škoda brand currently has the widest range of models and powertrains in its history. In the past year, it has comprehensively modernised it, introducing revamped Kamiq and Scala compact models, along with new generations of the top-of-the-range Kodiaq and Superb models, including plug-in hybrid variants with over 100 km of electric range. The production of the Superb has shifted from Kvasiny to Bratislava, where it is produced with the Volkswagen Passat, which brings a number of advantages.

    Digitisation

Seamless software operation and improved functions – both inside and outside the car – are essential for enhancing customer experience and satisfaction. The Holistic User Experience Centre (HUX) enables the carmaker to empathise with its customers and play a key role in the development of digital services for the Škoda brand. With initiatives like Pay to Park and Pay to Fuel, it is constantly striving to simplify customers’ daily lives. Škoda Auto has also announced the introduction of the AI-based ChatGPT chatbot into its Laura voice assistant, thereby pushing the car-using experience further.

    Internationalisation

Last year, Škoda Auto took further significant steps to expand its global footprint. It made its debut on the Vietnamese market and assumed strategic responsibilities within the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region, as well as for other brands in the Brand Group Core. In addition, it announced its return to Kazakhstan, where it will offer locally assembled cars.

    Sustainable development

Škoda Auto’s effort to reduce its environmental impact have been impressive. For example, the company has increased its use of renewable energy sources thanks to solar power plants in Pune, India, and on the roof of its main plant in Mladá Boleslav. In addition, Škoda Auto and ŠKO-ENERGO announced the launch of a project to transition away from coal to 100% biomass energy. Overall in 2023, Škoda Auto reduced the environmental impact of its Czech plants by 56.4% compared with the 2010 baseline across all five monitored categories, including water and energy consumption, CO2 emissions, waste and volatile emissions.

    Successes and Ongoing Challenges

MMI Conference: The Škoda Auto annual press conference was directly followed by the traditional meeting of the carmaker’s management.

The conference agenda on 15 March in Bezděčín covered some topics that the carmaker had already shared with the press, including an evaluation of the economic results for 2023, forecasts for this year and the presentation of the new electric urban crossover, the Škoda Epiq. There was also a summary of the strategic themes from the Target Summit and a short greeting by Josef Zmrhal, Vice-Chairman of KOVO Trade Unions.

Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, reiterated points from the annual press conference. In addition to summarising the successful results and milestones, for example in the field of internationalisation, he highlighted future challenges. “The window of opportunity to excel in the automotive transformation for us is now, in the next few years. We are taking the necessary steps now to secure the continuing success of our beloved brand,,” said K. Zellmer. Holger Peters, Board Member for Finance, IT and Legal affairs, expanded on his thoughts from the press conference.

    Strategic objectives

Roland Villinger, Head of GS – Corporate and product strategy, introduced the Target Summit segment, and the Board Members responsible for the respective areas detailed the individual pillars, emphasising the brand’s focus on Everyday Explorers customers and increasing market share in Europe, growth in India and Southeast Asia, employee competence development, quality, customer experience, sustainability and more.

Despite a financially successful 2023, Next Level Efficiency+ and the associated Gemeinkostenprogramm remain central to this strategy, aimed at increasing efficiency and savings. In addition to tapping the potential of new markets, this includes maximising revenue through customer-oriented solutions and optimising fixed costs in production and administration. “We will succeed together – as distinct brands with shared resources, competing with brands outside the VW group. On this journey, your role is crucial. Each of you contributes to taking Škoda Auto to the next level,” concluded K. Zellmer.

    Meeting of 150 top managers

Škoda Auto is part of the Brand Group Core – a group of five high-volume brands within the Volkswagen Group – aimed at achieving joint growth and significantly increasing overall efficiency. The top executives from these brands gathered in the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles showroom in Hanover, filled with iconic motor homes.

Škoda Auto was represented by the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Klaus Zellmer, and other members of the management team, who, joined by around 150 top managers, spent a day and a half of workshop-style discussions focusing on how to reach specific targets by the end of 2024.

Sharing experiences between the five brands and finding common solutions requires that the people responsible for taking action meet regularly in the same room. At the event in Hanover, not only the senior managers who were present but also other colleagues, regardless of hierarchy, played an important role. In addition, representatives from other VW Group brands, including PowerCo and Cariad, as well as the individual markets, were also invited to participate.

    Lars Buchwald

Head of PMO for Brand Group Core

For example, representatives from high-volume brands discussed approaches to significantly reduce battery costs, how to decrease software complexity across brands while improving quality and how to stabilise and shorten the product design process. They also pointed out the need to optimise the cost structures across all brands, in alignment with the previously defined key business areas called the 6+ Core Drivers.

“If we use our existing knowledge in a focused manner and consistently tap into the many possible synergies, we will have a decisive competitive advantage. This meeting has taken us a real step forward – we cannot let up now. We have to do everything we can to quickly implement the measurable actions agreed in our 6+Core Drivers,” summarised Thomas Schäfer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Volkswagen, who heads the Brand Group Core.

First Early Bird Breakfast this year

Klaus Zellmer and Thomas Schäfer, leaders of the Škoda and Volkswagen Passenger Cars brands, discussed the current industry landscape.

Participants of the November Early Bird Breakfast event at Café Restaurant Václav found the discussion with Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars and Board Member of the VW Group responsible for Brand Group Core, and Škoda Auto CEO Klaus Zellmer to be inspiring. Therefore, the organisers took advantage of his visit to Mladá Boleslav and invited him to the first “Early Bird” meeting this year, which was attended by more than 70 top Škoda Auto managers on 20 March.

The looser structure of the Early Bird Breakfast agenda gives participants the opportunity to exchange information, experiences and opinions more openly and spontaneously.

Unlike the last informal meeting, which mainly focused on the strategic importance of the Brand Group Core for Škoda Auto and the brand’s role within this grouping, this session explored the current situation in the automotive industry and common markets. The frequent changes during the major transformation of the sector present many opportunities, as well as challenges. In the spirit of the breakfast motto, “What if...?”, T . Schäfer, along with K. Zellmer and senior executives, reflected on the sudden challenges that they have to anticipate and manage. Answers were often found in synergies between brands, efficiency programmes or linking competencies, which underpin the foundational values of the Brand Group Core.

    The 2024 Collective Bargaining Concluded

The KOVO Trade Union has negotiated favourable changes with Škoda Auto management for the period from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.

We are pleased to inform you that collective bargaining between Škoda Auto’s management and the KOVO Trade Union has concluded. The parties reached agreements on wage tariffs, budgeted social contributions for 2024 and renewed expired agreements from the Set of agreements and documents, available in the Agreements  of the CA section on Škoda Space

“Motivated and satisfied employees are a priority for Škoda Auto and the KOVO Trade Union. At the same time, we are focused on the company’s future, its ability to compete and safeguarding jobs. We are confident this agreement will benefit all employees, setting the stage for us to continue our company’s successful growth together. Therefore, we’re honoured to announce the following positive changes,” stated Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture, and Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union.

    Compensation

    – Wage tariffs, including intermediate levels, will increase by 5% starting 1 April 2024. For the period from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, the rates for the individual tariff groups apply as indicated in the table.

    – The variable bonus for the 2023 results is CZK 96,000. In addition, the KOVO Trade Union has secured a one-off payment of CZK 4,000. The total amount will, therefore, be CZK 100,000, which will be paid to employees as part of the April payroll, being received in May’s payslip.

    – Throughout 2024, an employee with full entitlement will receive an average total of approximately CZK 170,000, combining the guaranteed and variable bonuses with the negotiated one-time payment.

    – The night shift supplement will increase by CZK 10/hour from 1 April 2024, bringing the total increase to CZK 50/hour.

    Benefits and social policy

Škoda Auto continues to offer its employees unmatched benefits, and maintaining them is a priority despite tax and administrative changes from the government’s consolidation package. In collective bargaining, the KOVO Trade Union agreed on the following benefits for employees.

    – Allocation of 5,000 Cafeteria points for employees in December 2024.

    – The employer’s contribution to the supplementary pension savings will be increased by CZK 100 per month, bringing the total to CZK 1,700 per month starting from 1 April 2024.

  • Women’s Day at the museum

The Škoda Museum in Mladá Boleslav dedicated the last day of February primarily to women, as it hosted the annual Women’s Day event with 391 participants. In addition to health and mental well-being, the themes included safety, self-confidence and technological innovations, including artificial intelligence, all under the patronage of Maren Gräf, Board Member for People and Culture.

    The Museum Belonged to Women

Diversity and Inclusion: Health and mental fitness, but also artificial intelligence. These were some of the themes of the February Women’s Day event.

    Report

On the last day of February, the Škoda Museum in Mladá Boleslav hosted its annual event not only dedicated to women from the carmaker but also welcoming a total of 391 attendees who filled the museum’s large auditorium for Women’s Day.

In addition to health and mental well-being, the themes included safety and self-confidence, as well as technological innovations and artificial intelligence, all under the patronage of Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture. She kickstarted the event with a short speech, followed by Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union, who shared enriching experiences and memories related to the women he had met throughout his career at the carmaker.

The atmosphere of the second edition was very inspiring and energetic thanks to the contributions of all the speakers. However, the great audience also contributed to it.

    Four inspiring female speakers

Janka Chudlíková, a personal and professional development lecturer, coach and mentor, provided a burst of positive energy. Her engaging talk on the topic of personal renewal focused on the importance of working on oneself and how to better recognise one’s own value to oneself and others and, in the process, achieve satisfaction and success in life.

How to stand up for yourself was Jasmína Houdek’s topic. The modern self-defence instructor and winner of the 2019 Františka Plamínková Award for Feminist of the Year dealt with self-esteem and self-defence against inappropriate behaviour. She imparted several practical skills and insights to the audience. Despite the short time she had for her speech, she conveyed a strong message to those in attendance: “I know that I’m stronger today than I was yesterday. And you will be too; I’ll teach you how.” She even got the whole room to do a Mexican wave at the end of her speech.

What followed was a calming of emotions and a foray into more academic topics. Anthropologist and artificial intelligence archaeologist Sara Polak linked the humanities with modern technology. In her presentation entitled “Women, Robots and History”, she outlined how technological advances have affected the social structure and position of (not only) women in society throughout history.

Software engineer, LGBT+ activist and stand-up comedian Lenka Králová provided an unusual but very enjoyable conclusion to the day, which was imbued with kind humour and immediate spontaneity. She was born in a male body and transitioned to her gender identity as a woman at the age of 37, and this was not her first time at a Škoda Auto event. She captivated the whole room with her relaxed attitude.

    Marketplace

After the lectures, attendees visited the 16 marketplace stations. These stations offered information on a variety of topics, including employee benefits, cancer and cardiovascular disease prevention, artificial intelligence, the Škodaverse and women’s leadership at the carmaker.

    Olena Hryniak

Head of VTP – Product, Prices & Planning

I organised one of the first Area F women’s groups on work–life balance and am very interested in the topic of women. After last year’s successful Women’s Day, I wanted to see for myself how great the speakers would be. And they were. I’d been to Jasmína Houdek’s events several times before and knew it would be absolutely riveting. And a standout was the “Stop!” moment in Janka Chudlíková’s performance.

    Daniela Smolová

    Forewoman of Logistics PFK-I/117

I’d never been to any meeting like this before and wanted to experience it. I’m interested in discussions about the role of women – I’m a forewoman, and perhaps I’m very fortunate to feel at home among the men in my area. I was looking forward to seeing Janka Chudlíková at the event. I’ve been following her daughter, YouTuber Anežka aka Not So Funny Any, since I was young. Both of them are a great inspiration for me.

    Kateřina Tondrová

Quality Specialist GQG/1 – Customer data analytics

My main motivation for attending was the performance of Janka Chudlíková, whom I’ve long followed on social media. She helped me a lot during COVID, providing strength and inspiration for personal renewal and a shift in my perspective on life. The bar for the performances was set high, but all of them were complex. I was also impressed by Lenka Králová, who managed to outline her issues in an engaging and deeply human way.

Weekly Thursday newsletter for employees. A summary of the last week‘s main events at Škoda Auto, regional news as well as cultural events.

Skoda Supplements

Škoda Mobil, the employee newspaper of the Mladá Boleslav-based carmaker, includes special supplements that focus on especially important topics from Škoda's perspective. Supplements can be a part of the newspaper, in the same format as the newspaper, inserted, for example, in the form of a flyer, or they can be stand-alone unique magazines in a specific format, such as supplements dedicated to new models, the brand's historical anniversaries, or other important information from the company's environment.
