  Twenty-nine male and six female

  students of the SOU (ŠKODA Appren

  -

  ticeship Centre) are currently working on the

  sixth edition of the Azubi Car project.

  Supported by experienced engineers and

  

  Development, Design and Production

  departments, the team is turning a KODIAQ

  into a modern and unique two-door pick-up.

  The choice of this model highlights its

  

  robust wheels, sharp edges and sculp

  -

  ture-like shapes show that the pure and

  

  

  creativity. The sixth student car produced

  under the Azubi project, which has been

  running since 2014, will be presented to the

  public in June.

  VW GROUP TO MERGE

  ITS INDIAN BRANDS

  In early April, the VW Group

  announced its plan to merge three

  India-based car manufacturers: Volkswa

  -

  gen India Private Ltd. (VWIPL), Volkswa-

  gen Group Sales India Private Ltd. (NSC)

  

  (SAIPL). The merger has already been

  approved by the Boards of the three

  companies concerned and is now subject

  to approval by Indian authorities. This

  measure is expected to increase the

  

  Group to grow further in India, an impor

  -

  tant growth market. The Group brands

  present in India – Volkswagen, ŠKODA,

  

  maintain their identities, sales networks

  and customer programmes. Under a joint

  Indian market strategy, all these brands

  will be led by Gurpratap Boparai.

  SCALA ON ITS WAY

  TO FIRST OWNERS

  The SCALA, a new compact hatch-

  back whose price starts at CZK

  369,900 (applies to “Ambition”, the basic but

  in the showrooms of authorised ŠKODA

  dealers in the Czech Republic. All dealers

  have already received demo vehicles for test

  

  potential customers. The carmaker has

  

  retail sales in its home market in mid-Janu

  Award, a survey that forms part of the global

  certainty, career growth and personal

  development opportunities, attractive

  won this survey once again, and we see this

  KVASINY TO PROVIDE

  VEHICLES TO PEOPLE IN NEED

  OCTAVIAs to social service and

  welfare providers in the surroundings of the

  Kvasiny plant. The objective is to support

  mobility in social services as part of

  the attractiveness of the Kvasiny region.

  ŠKODA AUTO provides support worth tens

  of millions of Czech crowns to such projects.

  The new cars, which are expected to make

  life easier for social workers in the foothills

  of the Orlické Mountains, will be provided to

  the Setkání Hospice in Rychnov nad

  ŠKODA WINS IT PROJECT

  OF THE YEAR AWARD

  On 21 March, representatives of

  Press Shop Maintenance and

  Production and Logistics IT received the

  

  Project of the Year, a competition held by

  the Czech Association of IT Managers

  (CACIO). The awards are given to IT

  projects by an expert jury made up of IT

  managers of major companies and aca

  -

  demics. The jury selected “Smart Mainte-

  nance at ŠKODA AUTO” as the best IT

  project because of its demonstrable

  

  speed of its implementation. Modern IT

  tools enable the Maintenance department

  to put reports on production equipment

  statuses online, which has led to an

  increase in the utilisation rate of the press

  lines. This award is another piece of

  evidence that the process of production

  digitisation is continuing successfully.

  IN CAIRO

  On 27 March, KAYAN Egypt, the

  Crossovers, and the KODIAQ 4x4 dominated

  their favourites online between 4 January

  and 1 February from among 211 models

  DYNAMIC, MODERN AND SUSTAINABLE: THE ŠKODA BRAND’S

  OUTLOOK FOR ITS LARGEST MARKET

  Typical Chinese customers

  Unlike their counterparts in Europe, Chinese

  customers purchase their first car at a young age.

  They know how to use their smartphones and

  mobile applications, which form a major part of

  their everyday lives. They are enthusiastic about

  new trends, and they share them instantly and

  comment on them on social networks.

  The most popular application, a local phenomenon

  called WeChat, had 1.1 billion active users last year,

  which is comparable to the number of users on

  Instagram.

  In terms of design, customers tend to follow

  their emotions. They prefer comfort, cosiness,

  spaciousness and soft materials – and, of

  course, interfaces that support technologies and

  connectivity. Their cars are their trademark and are

  closely watched by others.

  China is twice as big as the entire European Union.

  It has 56 dierent ethnic groups, and each of the

  34 provincial administrative regions has its own

  particularities: In the north, the car is handed

  over after a tea ceremony, whilst in the south the

  customer receives the car as confetti cannons go o.

  Electric mobility is becoming very popular

  in China, and ŠKODA enters these waters

  with a VISION iV concept that it presen-

  ted to the general public in March at the Ge-

  neva Motor Show (more information avai-

  specifically for the Chinese market. On

  electric motor that powers the rear wheels

  and enables driving without any emissi-

  partner, SAIC Volkswagen, and within the

  framework of a joint venture, the ŠKODA

  brand is working hard on the introduction

  of the car on the Chinese market.

  Another example of what urban electric

  micromobility could look like in the future

  is the KLEMENT two-wheel concept that

  was presented here by the Chairman of the

  Board, Bernhard Maier, just like at the Ge-

  neva Motor Show.

  SUV family has four members!

  China is the only market in the world where

  

  Apart from the KODIAQ, which was tailor-

  -made for China with seven seats, and the

  -

  ropean model and also has a wheelbase that

  -

  nese versions of the KAMIQ and KODIAQ

  GT models. ŠKODA developed the latter two

  models exclusively for the Chinese market.

  You may know the European version of the

  KAMIQ from the Geneva Motor Show (see

  the March issue of ŠKODA Mobil for further

  details), but the KODIAQ GT is not sold in

  Europe. The SUV car segment has tremen

  -

  dous growth potential in China.

  “All four cars are very popular among our

  Chinese customers. For us, this is a great in

  -

  centive as we want to raise brand awareness

  in China, increase its popularity and ensure

  an even higher success of the brand”, says

  Maier. In Shanghai, ŠKODA also showed

  new sketches of the VISION GT design con-

  cept that will be presented at the next local

  motor show in Shenzhen this June.

  In the middle of Beijing’s Silicon Valley

  Named ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab China, a

  new spin-off of the innovation workshop

  that will be connected to the start-up com-

  munity was created in Beijing. The main fo-

  cus of the common projects will be mobi-

  lity of the future, digitisation, development

  and the creation of new business models.

  One of the projects will also be a service

  enabling the delivery of goods directly into

  the trunk of a car. This is already being tes-

  ted in the Czech Republic. Another project

  The traditional Volkswagen Group Day took

  place as a part of the press days. At its world

  premiere, Audi presented an AI:ME concept,

  the Porsche Cayenne Coupé had its Asian

  premiere, and the 911CarreraScabriolet had

  its premiere for the Chinese market. The Jetta

  brand showed o its new SUV called VS5,

  which Volkswagen presented and ocially

  launched a new aordable car brand with the

  same name. Even though the main target of

  the brand is Chinese customers, the brand still

  belongs to the Volkswagen Group, which may

  indicate an intent to sell the Jetta cars on other

  markets, too.

  THE MEDIA

  ŠKODA intends to continue its

  success story in its most important

  single market by entering the

  e-mobility sector, which is growing

  rapidly – particularly in China.

  The ŠKODA VISION iV concept

  shows what the mobility of the

  future will look like according to

  the Czech carmaker. The concept,

  which should be able to drive up

  to 500 km thanks to its 83 kW

  battery, was modified especially for

  the Chinese market.

  The person who files a

  complaint can be an in-house

  employee or an external subject

  (supplier, business partner,

  etc.). As the whole system is

  anonymous and deals with

  very severe violations of rules,

  the whistleblower can choose

  who they will trust with their

  concern. They can report a

  concern through VW’s Central

  Investigative Body or to an

  independent ombudsperson.

  Guidance is also provided

  through an internal line of the

  GO unit. Phone calls from

  abroad are interpreted, and

  the VW Group also provides

  translation into Czech.

  Why are changes to the system happening

  now?

  The Volkswagen Group recently introduced con-

  tact points for reporting concerns and aligned

  the related processes. ŠKODA AUTO builds on

  this change and has amended the already imple-

  mented system for resolving concerns. The ba-

  sic objective of the change is to increase employ-

  

  and to ensure an independent investigation of all

  concerns.

  How can the employees report individual

  concerns?

  They can do so mainly through the contact points

  listed in the infographic. More information is avail-

  able on the Employee Portal. GO unit (Govern-

  ance, Risk & Compliance) employees can provide

  guidance.

  In what regard are the employees obliged to

  report their concerns?

  Through the new system, ŠKODA AUTO enforc-

  es proper behaviour among their employees and

  tries to set all the measures in such a way that vi-

  olations of law and internal guidelines are prevent-

  ed. If the employees decide to report a concern, the

  carmaker protects them from discrimination and

  retaliation. Whether they report a concern or not

  is up to them. However, employees at the manage-

  ment level and higher are obliged to make a report.

  What happens to a concern after it is

  reported?

  

  reporting line: It is a complex process that

  regulates the receipt of the concern, its le

  gal evaluation and the consequent process-

  ing inside the company, as well as the im-

  plementation of appropriate solutions (see

  the infographic). All the rules and proce

  dures are regulated by organisational stand-

  

  The system serves employees, suppliers,

  customers and third parties. It provides

  them the option of discreetly (or even anony-

  mously) pointing out behaviour that is harm-

  ful inside and/or to the company. These can

  be instances of fraud, corruption, bullying in

  tition, severe incompliance with guidelines

  in terms of occupational health and safety

  and also damages the good

  reputation of ŠKODA AUTO.

  The implemented process en-

  ables the company to accept

  appropriate measures that

  will stop or prevent reported

  unlawful behaviour in time,

  thereby minimising the risk of

  pertinent sanctions related to

  civic, administrative or crimi-

  nal law. The existence of the

  system itself and the awareness of possible

  recourses discourages everyone from engag-

  ing in unlawful behaviour.

  What can I report?

  You should report mainly cases of severe vi-

  

  guidelines. Employees use the system in

  practice mainly when they cannot report the

  concern to their supervisor nor to any other

  person. Unless the concern is about a severe

  violation of law, it is not the purpose of the

  -

  sonal issues, breaches of professional duty

  etc. These topics need to be dealt with open-

  ly and through direct communication with

  colleagues and supervisors. The system also

  does not replace advisory services for gen-

  

  or adherence to rules, for example, accept-

  n the February edition of ŠKODA Mo-

  initiatives. We followed up on the topic in

  a March article about risk management,

  and we now continue the series by pre-

  

  The meeting with them took place be-

  meeting consisted of individual inter

  the presentation of the current format of

  the programme, as well as its implementa-

  tion plan for the carmaker. Bernhard Mai-

  er, the Chairman of the Board, highlighted

  the ŠKODA AUTO values and mentioned

  tives. During workshops, the participants

  discussed what they imagined their roles

  in the programme would be and the pro-

  

  that the mangers should lead their employ-

  ees by example and the carmaker should

  retain its position as a global player in the

  future, focus on its employees, young tal-

  ents and environmental protection. Almost

  ences from meetings in line with integri-

  ty guidelines, as well as other workshops,

  where you will have the chance to com-

  ment on the environment and the culture at

  Handbook

  A new handbook on compliance,

  integrity and company culture,

  containing a summary of the

  basic topics from this area, was

  published on the Employee Portal.

  The handbook should make the

  orientation easier and serve as an

  aid to explain certain activities, for

  discussion stage. Together with other colleagues,

  work place. Until the end of April, across the who-

  le VW Group, an analysis of extended measures

  sis, the Group team will prepare solutions in the

  upcoming months. These solutions will be bin-

  ding on individual brands and the VW Group. In

  the survey, there will be an unlimited time peri-

  od to revise the measures. During this time, you

  will be able to verify their added value. In the co-

  ming weeks and months, during team discussi-

  ons, you will receive more information about the

  -

  -

  lue, and if the situation requires it, you will make

  adjustments to them. Situations you may come

  across during this revision stage of the measu

  res are brought to you in the overview below. In

  the summer months, the campaign dedicated to

  Successful implementation of measure

  In your team, you have estimated the time of com-

  pletion of the measures during their creation. In

  an ideal case, you will gather all the necessa

  cation. If you need more time to complete it su-

  WHAT COULD EVERYDAY ELECTRIC MOBILITY LOOK LIKE IN PRACTICE?

  young lady called Claudia.

  She is a so-called persona,

  i.e. a virtual customer based on a

  set of data about real customers of

  the company. Thanks to custom-

  er data analysis, three more mod-

  el customers named Nadine, Peter

  and Luca were created at ŠKODA

  AUTO.

  Get acquainted

  Claudia (see illustration) is inter-

  ested in modern technologies and

  digital services, she likes to shop

  online, and in terms of electric

  cars, she is enticed by the silent

  and cheap operation, free park

  -

  ing and tax relief. She is very op-

  timistic as the charging network

  keeps growing, and she is hap

  -

  py that by buying an electric car

  she makes the environment bet

  -

  ter, cleaner and more sustainable.

  However, she is worried about not

  knowing enough about the tech-

  nology, the low range, the high

  price of a home charger of the

  “wall box” type and expensive bat-

  tery changes. She is also hesitant

  about lengthy charging times and

  is afraid that she would run out

  of power somewhere without a

  charging station available.

  Daily commute

  “I love all new technologies. When

  

  evening, I simply connect my car

  to the home charger. Before I go to

  bed, I set an alarm

  for the morn-

  ing as well as the

  “Last Friday, I came to work and

  there was no charger available in

  the garage. The battery showed

  

  was supposed to meet a friend

  in Litomyšl, and I was planning

  the route on my computer dur

  ing my lunch break. The system

  suggested charging stations

  on the road. Then I had an idea

  to stop by Kutná Hora, where I

  -

  ed the stop, re-planned the trip,

  and I was set to

  go. In Prague,

  there was con

  -

  ed the best route,

  and I knew it was

  a short trip to the

  first charger. I parked the car in

  Kutná Hora and went for a walk.

  I consider the biggest step

  forward to be the fact that the car

  user interface is gradually getting closer

  to what customers are used to from

  their mobile devices. It is not only the

  visual part but also the way of interacting

  with it that is visible, for example, in

  expanding the personalisation options.

  Apart from that, it is amazing that we

  have managed to elevate some purely

  aesthetic features and give them a safety

  function, as well. For example, if the door

  is open, the ambient colour of their

  lighting becomes red.

  Our department works on

  combining all mobile applications

  into one platform called MyŠKODA,

  which is particularly beneficial for our

  customers. Through one application,

  they will be able to prepare the car for

  the morning drive, plan the route,

  remotely follow the car’s stats and

  battery charge or verify that the car in

  the garage is locked.

  and their events

  It’s simple. I enjoy it. It’s how I want

  it. Those who participated in the

  UXperience Day E-mobility event

  experienced the same feelings with

  Claudia as every customer of ŠKODA

  should. Based on the word User

  Experience, the event took place at the

  beginning of April at STC Kosmonosy.

  It was an initiative of the UX team,

  who presented electric mobility to

  the management and leadership of

  ŠKODA AUTO from a practical, user-

  oriented point of view and walked them

  through every day of using an electric

  car in an interactive way. The guests

  experienced regular situations that the

  company’s customers will have to face.

  At three dierent stands, they could

  go through the situations with Claudia

  and experience everything first-hand.

  They had a prototype of an ASUVe car,

  the concept of which you already know

  under the name VISIONiV. The UX team

  consists of 25 ambassadors from the

  V,E, F, G areas and fromthe ŠKODA

  AUTO DigiLab who are trying to

  promote and support a customer-centric

  approach (the customer and their needs

  are the centre of attention) in all projects

  of the car factory. Every member of

  the team is an advisor for his or her

  department and related departments.

  The team then creates strategy and

  individual tools with the aim of providing

  the customer the best user experience in

  their class in the automotive industry.

  What is the goal of the

  the VW Group and across all its brands, we

  have been intensively thinking about our fu-

  ture and designing and discussing possible

  scenarios for future development of auto pro-

  duction. The primary goal is to develop the

  factory of the future concept and prepare our

  production for digital transformation.

  What was the main impetus for its

  creation?

  The future of the auto industry is changing

  faster than ever, but this is nothing new to the

  manufacturing sector. New markets, custom-

  er requirements and products require mainly

  modern production concepts. Unlike tradition-

  al manufacturing processes, digital technolo-

  gies provide us with innovative tools that help

  us organize and manage production more ef-

  

  creating important impulses for the production

  of tomorrow. At the same time, the Fabrikwel-

  The factory of the future will be built on tech-

  nological innovations. The pressing problem

  management of production data is in fact di-

  rectly dependent on the information flows

  to build a digital infrastructure to produce key

  products that will take into account the best

  practices in standardization, data communica-

  tion, processing and use of production data,

  for example, for preventive maintenance. We

  will place great emphasis on making the new

  digital solutions a useful tool for employees,

  making their work easier, and enabling the

  use of the technologies in everyday practice.

  of the future without the Internet of

  Things, digital modelling, simulation,

  virtual and augmented reality, and

  technologies enabling day-to-day

  wearing, such as the ProGlove

  smart glove. Production data and

  their processing already play an

  important role today. The data will be

  transmitted to the Big Data repository

  via servers through the PSB and Open

  Process Control (which defines data

  communication between devices from

  dierent manufacturers) services,

  and used not only to control material

  flow. We will use advanced machine

  learning and artificial intelligence tools

  in manufacturing processes, which

  will bring radical improvements in

  maintenance and quality.

  trol levers have been replaced with armrests

  and joysticks, auxiliary heating will help on

  colder days, and robust leatherette (hygienic)

  seats will make the operators more comfor-

  combustion engine is only used to recharge

  the battery. Some vehicles use one electric

  motor to drive the entire car; others have more

  of them, such as the Audi e-tron concept,

  which uses one electric motor for each wheel.

  The REEV is particularly useful for urban traf-

  

  bustion engines in conventional cars. By con-

  trast, the car is at a disadvantage when driv-

  ing at high speeds over long distances, such

  as on a highway.

  Parallel

  It is equipped with both an internal combus-

  tion engine and an electric motor connected by

  the transmission. Both the electric motor and

  the combustion engine are connected “side by

  side”, i.e. in parallel, and either one of them or

  both can be used at the same time. Compared

  with the serial type, it achieves efficiency at

  higher speeds, as it is able to use the power

  potential provided by the combination of both

  engines when needed. A typical example of the

  parallel hybrid is the Honda IMA.

  Combined

  It can switch between the serial and the par-

  

  of both. As a result, it can be driven only by

  the electric motor, only by the combustion en-

  gine or both. These hybrids include the Toy-

  

  

  from conventional cars propelled by combus-

  tion engines in that it uses the start-stop sys

  tem and the feature of recovering braking en-

  ergy. The micro hybrid uses it to recharge its

  sounds like an obvious thing, but micro hy-

  Battery electric vehicles (BEV) use only their

  electric motor as a means of propulsion. The

  energy stored in their batteries is primari-

  ly gained from charging stations. They do

  not have a combustion engine or any other

  way to generate electricity. The battery size,

  efore entering the era of e-mobility,

  ŠKODA will test the prototypes of

  the electrically powered CITIGO model

  built on the existing design of its Group

  sibling, the Volkswagen e-up!, as part of

  the pilot project. Ten CITIGO e-PILOTs

  running only on batteries will be used

  by selected companies, fleet custom

  -

  ers (at least three delivered cars a year

  – ed.) and government institutions. In

  this way, the Czech carmaker wants to

  get tangible reactions and valuable sug-

  gestions from future customers who will

  thoroughly test the cars in everyday op-

  eration before the company launches

  -

  nal version. Sensors in all cars will be

  recording important data, such as the

  temperature outside and inside the car,

  acceleration etc. All information will be

  automatically transmitted so that the

  

  -

  ate it. The manufacturer will then gain

  valuable insights into car usage and can

  also monitor the load on the battery or

  the power grid during recharging.
