The MQ100 gearbox had been in production for more than 12 years.

    Farewell to the MQ100 gearbox

Since 2011, the PK – Component Production department in Mladá Boleslav has produced more than 2.2 million MQ100 gearboxes. They were installed in compact Škoda models (Fabia and Citigo), as well as other Group brand models (e.g. Volkswagen Polo and SEAT Ibiza). However, the era of this “little sister” to the MQ200 gearbox has come to an end, with the last unit produced on 12 January. After a final commemorative photograph, it was fitted into a Fabia car in the M1 hall. The MQ100 was the first Group transmission for which Škoda Auto assumed development responsibility in 2015, and its technical capabilities were continuously enhanced. Its noise level was reduced and production processes and technologies were improved, especially in mechanical machining of shafts, gears and synchronous gear shift components, including hardening processes. The areas after MQ100 are used within the PK unit for logistics or engine production.

  • Developments in virtual reality

As part of a broader modernisation of the Česana site, the carmaker has opened a Virtual Development Centre to accelerate the preparation of new vehicles. The inauguration ceremony took place on 9 January with the carmaker’s management in attendance. We present the state-of-the-art workplaces focused on virtual and augmented reality, user testing and collaboration across the automaker.

    Topic

    Development in Virtual Reality

Technical Development: The carmaker has inaugurated its new Virtual Development Centre in Česana, which will help speed up the preparation of new cars.

The facility, in which Škoda Auto invested EUR 8 million euros, was officially opened on 9 January with the carmaker’s management in attendance. “Digitisation and virtualisation represent a clear direction for us, and it requires significant future investment,” said Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, during his opening speech.

The virtual development centre is part of the broader modernisation of the entire Česana site and was created by repurposing existing premises. “Such workplaces allow us to work together from the early stages of car development and across the carmaker’s various departments. The earlier we start our collaboration, the more quickly we can identify the various pitfalls that we may encounter during development,” said Johannes Neft, Board Member for Technical Development.

It is the story of an old body shop converted into a super-modern development centre. With this workplace, we open a window to the future.

    Jan Bečvařík

Head of EY– Planning and Coordination

    State-of-the-art equipment

The new facility has state-of-the-art equipment in the areas of projection technology, virtual and augmented reality and communication capabilities. EUR 4 million went into the building modifications, and the carmaker invested the same amount in equipment.

The workplace consists of several parts, the largest being a VR studio for developing surfaces. This area can be used as a whole or divided into two separate areas. Here, car models at various stages of development can be displayed, and with the help of augmented reality techniques and two large 8K resolution projection walls, technicians can assess how the shapes and surfaces designed in virtual reality match with real-world conditions. The hall can simulate various lighting conditions, including natural daylight.

    Emphasis on interior work

Another area is the project hub for virtual and augmented reality work, which is combined with physical prototype cars and primarily focuses on interior work. The developers can use virtual reality from the early stages to explore, for example, the ergonomics of a proposed interior layout. Next to this is a specialised project hub for testing the user experience within the cars. For example, the workers use a simulator to measure how various tasks (e.g. temperature adjustments) affect the driver’s attention. The fourth “workstation” is the VR lab, which has a configurable frame that allows a floor plan of virtually any interior configuration to be built. From early development, the developers can test and observe how users will interact with various elements of the car.

In addition, all the workstations are designed and outfitted to facilitate collaboration among experts from various departments.

    Detailed visualisation

The primary user of the largest part of the centre, the VR studio, is the EBS – Strak and visualization department, which is tasked with creating digital car surfaces and visualising them in virtual reality. The goal is to be as close as possible to reality and, thus, ensure the car surfaces are assessed and approved exactly as they would be seen by the customer. At the heart of the VR studio are two LED walls, each 6.5 m wide and 3.6 m high, with 8K resolution. In a room adjacent to the studio, the VR lab, the developers use a versatile seating box to arrange any seating configuration, which is then combined with the car’s digital exterior and interior surfaces by using a pair of VR augmented reality glasses. “We can visualise cars in real time, including shadows, reflections and mirroring, across any trim level and colour combination,” explains Milan Rábel, Head of the EBS department.

    Milan Rábel

Head of EBS – Strak and visualization

Our goal is to ensure the visual quality of our future cars’ surfaces and identify any imperfections before they show up on the physical models. The VR studio and VR lab spaces use an effective combination of technologies to help us do this. The LED walls offer great resolution of even the smallest details, while the VR goggles with augmented reality allow improved spatial perception of the designed surfaces.

From early stages to serial production

The EBA – Concept dimensioning and design support department operates a pair of project hubs, each equipped with 3D goggles, a 98-inch central screen and two touchscreens for direct content editing. “These are not spaces designed exclusively for our department. From the early stages of the project, we collaborate with all the carmaker’s departments and support the project from pre-production to serial production,” says David Vaněk, Head of EBA. Beyond virtual tools, the hubs facilitate direct engagement with early concepts, especially car interiors.

    David Vaněk

Head of EBA – Concept dimensioning and design support

The two design hubs in the Virtual Development Centre allow you to accompany a new car from the initial CAD data conceptualization to the actual prototypes. In addition to screens and 3D goggles, collaboration equipment (e.g. high-quality audio equipment) and the ability to share content seamlessly from the room to different communication platforms are also important.

    User testing

The centre’s fourth area is dedicated to the HMI (human–machine interface) and UX (user experience) clinics, where the EBK – Concept Definition department primarily performs user testing of car control concepts. “In the initial stages of development, we create an interior mock-up that shows the geometry of the surfaces and controls in a form that leads to meeting the specifications of the car’s internal and external dimensions. We carry out tests on these physical models with the help of colleagues from various departments,” says Josef Smejkal, who heads the EBK department. The goal is to quickly verify whether virtually designed and tested solutions work well in practice.

    Josef Smejkal

Head of EBK – Concept Definition

The HMI and UX clinic spaces help our department to refine the final design of the interior and the car’s controls. In the centre, we have a simulator with three 98-inch displays to explore how different solutions affect the driver’s attention. The simulator uses specially developed software and see-through glasses to monitor where the ‘driver’ is looking.

  • Brand Group Core objectives

Before Christmas, the Chairmen of the Boards of Directors of the Škoda, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and SEAT/Cupra brands convened for a one-day workshop in Berlin. They reviewed the previous year’s work in key areas and established binding measures for 2024. The many awards won by the individual brands in readers’ polls in 2023 will serve as motivation for the new year.

    From the world

This year’s Brand Group Core objectives

Shortly before Christmas, the chairmen of the VW Group’s volume brand boards convened for a workshop in Berlin. They reflected on the previous year and established objectives for 2024.

The Brand Group Core workshop brought together the heads of the Škoda, Volkswagen Passenger Cars and SEAT/Cupra brands, namely Klaus Zellmer, Thomas Schäfer and Wayne Griffiths (from left).

At this one-day meeting, the CEOs and board members of the Škoda, Volkswagen, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and SEAT/Cupra brands reviewed last year’s progress in the Core Drivers areas. Based on this review, they laid out binding measures for 2024. The numerous awards in readers’ polls won by the individual brands in 2023 can serve as motivation for this year.

    Emphasis on cooperation and effectiveness

This year, ambitious performance improvement programmes will be implemented across all Brand Group Core brands. A major objective is to enhance collaboration in key activity areas by developing eMobility, reducing complexity and creating competitive cost structures. Closer collaboration can simplify processes, eliminate the duplication of work activities and ultimately save significant amounts of money. Optimising after-sales services within the VW Group alone could yield potential savings of several hundred million euros. Further potential lies in research and development, purchasing, production and model ranges.

In addition, the Brand Group Core is emphasising more cohesive internal communication this year. Brand representatives have agreed to support and monitor key areas to better track the achievement of objectives. This year will also mark the first time we host a senior management conference and a Capital Markets Day event for investors and analysts, which will focus on the Brand Group Core.

    Klaus Zellmer

    Škoda Auto CEO

Within the Brand Group Core, we have built a solid foundation over the past year to strengthen synergies and effectiveness among a team of strong yet differentiated brands. Škoda Auto’s pivotal position in this group is further evidenced by its assumption of strategic responsibility for the ASEAN region in 2023.

2024: Something to look forward to

At the Target Summit in January, Škoda Auto’s management reviewed the previous year and set goals for the current year. Among the milestones for 2023, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Klaus Zellmer, noted the company entering the Vietnamese market and assuming the Group’s strategic responsibility for the ASEAN region. He also highlighted the introduction of a portfolio of six new electric models, the continued production of the Enyaq in Mladá Boleslav, the transformation of the DigiLab into the new Škoda X digital service centre, the launch of the new Superb and Kodiaq models and the update of the Next Level strategy. While acknowledging a significant increase in deliveries to customers, he also recognised that not all the economic ambitions were realised.

    This year’s challenges

According to Zellmer, this year will be exciting. In the case of products, there will be an update to the best‑selling Octavia and the launch of the Elroq compact electric SUV. In addition to strengthening its position in Europe and becoming one of the top five best‑selling brands by 2030, Škoda’s goal is to continue expanding, particularly in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. A number of the carmaker’s employees will be involved in developing new forms of work, particularly linked to the upcoming move to the Laurin & Klement Kampus.

Among the partial innovations of this year is a new unified remuneration system for managers, which is partly tied to the successes of the entire Brand Group Core. Long-term goals include improving user experience and satisfaction, where the Škoda brand faces challenges, especially in the area of digital solutions. The advancement of digitalisation naturally extends to processes within the carmaker, for example, in the realm of artificial intelligence. Other key areas include sustainability and the Next Level Efficiency+ cost reduction programme.

    Greener Chemical Products

Reducing quantity and hazardousness of chemical products

Škoda Auto is aiming to reduce the environmental impacts of its production process and increase respect for natural resources and employee health. Several specialists within the company are involved in meeting these goals, which include reducing the quantity and hazardousness of chemical products.

    Thinner filler layer

The paint shops use the largest amount of chemical products in the car manufacturing process. In 2023, in collaboration with its suppliers, the carmaker managed to optimise the base paint (or filler) formulation. The previous ones had been hazardous to the water environment and employee health and posed increased risks in case of spills or accidents. With the new formulations, only the risk of eye irritation remains. This innovation not only makes the filler application process greener but also safer, thus ensuring another innovative measure in the painting process.

In 2022, the company introduced a technological solution that saved up to 720 tonnes of material annually, as well as approximately 50,000 kilometres that would otherwise have been covered by trucks transporting material from the supplier. At that time, the carmaker implemented new painting technology at its Czech production plants, enabling the application of a thinner layer of paint, known as filler (or primer). This filler on the car’s paintwork helps to even out the microscopic unevenness of the cataphoric layer and provides a base for the paint. It is applied in one of four colours (white, grey, black and red) to match the resulting body shade. The fact that even this thinner layer meets the extreme demands for durability and quality is mainly due to the new formulation and material, which is also water-thinnable.

    Reduction of diisocyanates

Last year, the carmaker adapted its production processes in response to new European legislation restricting the use of a group of chemicals knowns as diisocyanates. To comply with the legal requirements, Škoda Auto, in collaboration with the Škoda Academy, prepared training for affected employees. At the same time, it reached out to plants using diisocyanates to suggest suitable alternatives to these materials. These alternatives are often slightly more expensive, requiring involvement from the Purchasing area to ensure chemical safety requirements are considered when dealing with suppliers, especially concerning process materials. Of the original 65 with diisocyanates identified across Škoda Auto, only 49 are now in use. Their use has been eliminated at 21 workplaces. The number of suppliers providing diisocyanate materials to the carmaker was also reduced.

    Info

    What are diisocyanates?

These chemicals are mainly used to manufacture polyurethane products like foams, adhesives, sealants, elastomers, paints and coatings. They are strong allergens that can cause acute respiratory or skin reactions even with a single exposure, making strict adherence to occupational safety rules on site essential.

  • GreenFuture / Audit

    GreenFuture

    Audit demonstrates high standard

After weeks of work by TÜV NORD auditors, the carmaker retained its Integrated Management System (IMS) certificates in quality, environmental protection, energy saving, occupational safety and information. Thus, several standards were approved at the same time during one audit. The IMS certification adhered to international ISO and VDA standards, which are the entry requirements for the approval of sales of vehicles and components that are vital to Škoda’s competitiveness. Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture, led and presented the results, alongside the commissioners for the individual systems. “The external audit is key to ensuring that our products and services meet the standards and expectations of our customers. It gives us confidence that our processes and systems in all the areas meet the standards set, thus bolstering our competitiveness and customer satisfaction,” said M. Gräf.

A team of internal auditors from the GQZ – Quality Management System, FIG – IT Governance, Security and Service Management and PSU – Environmental and Work Protection departments (see the group photo) prepared all organisational units for the audit to guarantee its success. The auditors commended the digitisation of processes in all the systems, such as using the DFView platform for employee training and ensuring easy access to up-to-date training documents. The well-applied principle of the HR advice centre was noted as a strength. In occupational health and safety, they valued the implementation of numerous projects reducing workplace OSH risks and the focus on ergonomics.

  • Production of the new Kodiaq

Seven years after the launch of Škoda’s largest SUV, the second-generation Kodiaq has begun production. This launch posed several challenges for the Kvasiny plant. Along with a new design, the successor to the popular “bear” also introduced innovative features in terms of electronics and hybrid drive, which meant considerable effort in the car’s overall development.

    Challenge for Kvasiny: New Kodiaq

Seven years after production of Škoda’s largest SUV began, the second generation has started rolling off the production line.

The new Kodiaq’s production started at the beginning of the third week of this year, posing several challenges for the Kvasiny plant. The successor to the popular “bear” features a completely new design, innovative electronics and a hybrid drive, which required considerable effort to get the whole car up and running for all the specialist areas. The new Kodiaq boasts a 13-inch screen, a head-up display and a host of advanced assistance systems. The interior design has changed as well, with the gear lever replaced by a switch on the steering column, significantly freeing up space in the central console.

    410

Maximum daily production capacity for the second‑generation Kodiaq in Kvasiny.

    350

Approximate number of pre‑serial Kodiaqs produced.

    Long pre-serial phase

The production of the first pre-serial car started at the end of 2022. For the second-generation Kodiaq, this phase was a pilot project involving a minimal number of prototypes in the development area. For this reason, great emphasis was placed on producing the first pre‑serial cars to ensure timely delivery to customers by the Technical Development and Quality departments. These first cars were partially produced in the pilot hall, and over time, the pre-serial production was fully implemented on the production line.

Besides the cars required for essential tests, special units were produced for the marketing department. These were showcased at various events, including the world premiere in Berlin. The first production cars were subsequently allocated for dealer and importer training.

    Both generations produced simultaneously

The production of the Kodiaq models follows a so‑called ramp-up curve, which aims to reach maximum capacity after a gradual increase in daily output by May 2024. Until then, the old and new models will be produced simultaneously. The plug-in hybrid version will be a complete novelty for this series, featuring a 25.7 kWh battery with a pure electric range of over 100 km. This variant will go into production this spring. In addition, assembly of the new Kodiaq at the overseas plants will begin in 2025 in Aurangabad, India, and is also planned for Kazakhstan.

    Libor Mazánek

Head of PPF-K – Body Shop Planning and electrical equipment

Alongside solving technical welding shop issues, the biggest challenge in introducing the new‑generation Kodiaq was managing everything within an 18-shift operation. We had to concentrate all activities related to equipment assembly, electrical commissioning and quality loops during Saturday night shifts, Sundays and collective holiday periods. Furthermore, with the overlapping production of both generations during the pre-serial and serial phases, we needed to find solutions suitable for both versions. This often involved a complex search for compromises within financial constraints, production areas and more. I would like to thank all my colleagues at the Kvasiny plant for their cooperation.

Approximately this many workstations had to be modified on the assembly line. In addition, seven new ones were established on the line.

The main advantage of this engine generation is the innovative exhaust gas cleaning system known as MAR (motornahe Abgasreinigung – ed.; more details on the opposite page). The advanced nature of this system is underlined by its compliance with forthcoming emission regulations, including Euro 7.

In addition to the exhaust system, the fuel injectors have also been redesigned, enhancing the engine’s power to 85 kW.

Thorough preparation and cooperation across departments

To get this innovation off the ground, a new engine block and cylinder heads had to be introduced in production. The changes affected the metallurgical plant, plasma production in the M6 hall and machining in the M2 hall, where the engine assembly line had to be modified as well.

Almost 300 engines were constructed during the pre-serial production phase that began in the autumn of 2022. Thanks to collaboration with Group partners and the high level of commitment from various Škoda Auto departments (including technical development, production planning, purchasing, logistics, quality management, central technical service and pre-serial component centre), numerous technical, production and logistical problems were solved. Intensive work is currently underway to start production on the next-generation engine: the 1.5 TSI EVO2.

    MAR exhaust gas cleaning system

In the MAR system, the functions of reducing exhaust gas pollutants and capturing particulate matter are now separate, unlike previous technical solutions, so that the catalytic converter and particulate filter are two separate components. This design has enabled a reduction in precious metals used in the exhaust gas treatment system, leading to significant cost savings of up to thousands of euros per car produced, depending on current precious metal prices.

The 1.0 TSI EVO2 is followed by the next step, which we are already working on intensively. In the summer of next year, the SOP will feature the state-of-the-art four-cylinder 1.5 TSI EVO2, which is set to significantly increase our self-produced engine share in our vehicles.

In 2024, Škoda Auto is set to manufacture over 888,000 Škoda vehicles, with more than 781,000 of them produced in Czech plants. In addition, the carmaker is producing key components, like battery systems for all-electric cars on the MEB platform, as well as for plug‑in hybrid vehicles, axles and engines. These components are also used in cars from other VW Group brands. Škoda Auto made significant progress in its internationalisation strategy in 2023 by entering the Vietnamese market in September and preparing the resumption of production in Kazakhstan in mid-October. “Our recent forays into new markets and the addition of local production facilities are crucial steps in expanding our global production capacity,” stated Andreas Dick, Board Member for Production and Logistics.

    5. Výhra v Soutěži

    Výhrou je následující cena:

    3x balíčky reklamních předmětů Škoda.

    6. Kontaktování Výherce a podmínky čerpání výhry

    7. Pravidla ochrany osobních údajů (v souladu s GDPR 2016/679)

Vyplněním kvízu i osmisměrky a zasláním odpovědí na výše uvedenou e-mailovou adresu Soutěžící vědomě a dobrovolně souhlasí s Pravidly soutěže (viz tento dokument), což znamená:

    – zařazení do soutěže a příslušné evidence Soutěžících;

    – zasílání informačních e-mailů týkajících se této Soutěže;

Požádá-li Soutěžící o informaci o zpracování svých osobních údajů, je mu správce a případně i zpracovatel povinen tuto informaci bez zbytečného odkladu předat.

Pořadatel si vyhrazuje právo i bez uvedení důvodů Dobu soutěže zkrátit, Soutěž přerušit nebo zrušit či změnit její Pravidla, a to i bez udělení výhry a bez poskytnutí náhrad. Pořadatel si rovněž vyhrazuje právo nahradit ohlášenou výhru předmětem podobného typu a odpovídající hodnoty a upravit podmínky předání výhry v případě, že výhra nebude poskytnuta způsobem umožňujícím předání výhry vítězům v souladu s těmito Pravidly.
