The VW Group has increased its return on sales target to between 9% and 11% in 2030.

VW Group aims to align its strategy

At a shareholder meeting, the VW Group unveiled new management principles underscoring customer orientation, entrepreneurship and team spirit. The Group will assign responsibility for achieving profitability targets to the individual brands. To reach these targets, enhance profitability and cash flow and decrease capital intensity, each brand is launching its own efficiency programme (Škoda Auto’s programme is called Next Level Efficiency+). This marks a fundamental shift, as instead of solely pursuing sales growth, the focus will now also be on creating sustainable value based on the principle of “value over volume”. In addition, the Group is setting rules for technology platform sharing so that all brands can benefit from economies of scale through larger-scale production. These rules apply to platforms, traction batteries and mobility-related software and services. In the regions, the VW Group is placing greater emphasis on the most profitable areas. The strategy for important growth markets in China and North America has, therefore, been modified. With a new brand-focused approach and efficiency improvement programmes, the Group has raised its return on sales target to between 9% and 11% by 2030. More information can be found on the VW Group website.

    New Kodiaq shows its face

Models: Škoda Auto has revealed the upcoming second generation of its SUV for the first time, featuring a plug-in hybrid drive and a new interior concept.

The Kodiaq model kick-started Škoda’s successful SUV offensive in 2016, and now, after a facelift two years ago, it is time for its second generation. The world premiere is planned for the autumn, but at the end of June, the carmaker provided a partial glimpse of its appearance, albeit still concealed in a special camouflage. It also revealed some details about the car’s specifications, drive and equipment, and journalists had the opportunity to test-drive it around Geneva, Switzerland.

It is already clear that the Kodiaq will grow a few centimetres in length, resulting in a 75-litre increase in boot capacity. And in the seven-seat version, passengers in the third row of seats will enjoy more headroom. “Furthermore, the new Kodiaq takes safety, technology and versatility to the next level,” says Johannes Neft, Board Member for Technical Development. Other significant new features include a plug-in hybrid variant with a range of up to 100 km on electric charge, as well as a petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology introduced for the first time in this model. In both cases, the engines will be the new-generation EA 211 evo2. Additionally, petrol and diesel units with power outputs of up to 150 kW will be available, exclusively paired with DSG automatic transmission.

Inside the car, featuring a 12.9-inch touchscreen, customers will find a clever combination of manual and digital controls for an intuitive user experience. A remote parking system will make its debut in this model range, along with other advanced driver assistance systems and up to nine airbags to enhance safety.

We have taken the basis of our distinctive Škoda SUV design language to a new level and further refined it. In addition, we are introducing a fresh interior concept that incorporates a clever combination of manual and digital controls to provide an even more intuitive experience and a more comfortable drive.

    Smarter and safer Kodiaq

The new generation of Škoda’s largest SUV bets on an even more robust appearance with distinctive shapes and angular wheel arches. The striking Matrix-LED headlights will be complemented by a Crystallinium element that evokes the allure of coloured crystal glass and enhances the contours of the headlights.

The interior of the vehicle will be completely new. For the first time in a Škoda car, the gearshift has been moved to the steering column beneath the steering wheel, resulting in a clean and simple central console design. The large central touchscreen will be accompanied by an optional 10.25-inch virtual cockpit. Moreover, the controls skilfully integrate digital elements with manual ones so that all functions can be accessed very intuitively. Rear-seat passengers will benefit from an improvement that includes a storage compartment with a cup holder in the centre tunnel on the floor between the front seats. A touchscreen display cleaner will also be introduced as a new feature.

    It will park itself

In 2024, this new generation of the Kodiaq will feature a new remote parking system capable of manoeuvring in and out of tight spaces surrounded by parked cars. In this case, the driver controls the car by using a mobile app. The system also detects approaching objects or pedestrians and automatically avoids collisions.

Naturally, the new Kodiaq comes with enhancements to several assistance systems. Advanced proactive passenger protection and Emergency Assist will be available as options. When the sensors detect panic braking or an imminent collision, including a rear-end collision, the open windows or panoramic sunroof will automatically close, warning lights will be activated, and the front seat belts will be pre-tensioned simultaneously. Emergency Assist reduces the risk of accidents, especially in situations where the driver is unwell. In such cases, it takes control of the steering, activates the warning lights and brings the car to a safe stop. You can find more details here.

    Trailblazer among SUVs

When it was launched, the Kodiaq model followed in the footsteps of the 2009 Yeti, but it also redefined Škoda’s SUVs and laid the groundwork for the Karoq and Kamiq models, as well as the Kushaq designed for the Indian market. The first-generation Kodiaq introduced several exciting new features, including door edge protection and an electronically controlled child safety lock. The car has achieved great success, particularly in the German, British and Czech markets.

    Škodians succeed in Speed+ Award

On Wednesday 7 June, the results of the 2022 Speed+ Award, the VW Group‘s competition, were announced.

The event was attended by 22 VW Group component production managers from 11 countries and guests of honour Oliver Blume, CEO of the VW Group, Thomas Schmall, Board Member of Volkswagen and CEO of Volkswagen Group Components, via livestream from Hall 6 in Wolfsburg. The theme of this year‘s ceremony was football, so all the venues, including the main broadcast studio in Wolfsburg, were styled in a Champions League football setting.

The Škoda department PK – Components Production came second in the category of machine tool utilization and was awarded third place in the Best in Class category with its DQ200 internal drive shaft chain machining line in Vrchlabí.

    About the competition

The Speed+ Award is an international competition, which was launched for the seventh time this year, in which all component plants of the VW Group compete against each other in the field of efficiency. In the last edition, 22 nominated plants competed in eight categories, such as productivity, efficiency in the use of machining or assembly lines, environment, diversity, etc. The competition also evaluates cooperation between plants, their know-how and best practice.

    Smart data work improves quality

Digitisation: The efficiency of Škoda car production is significantly improved by using Power BI to analyse vast amounts of data. This process greatly accelerates and facilitates the identification of the causes of production errors.

The main advantages of using Power BI in production are easy-to-understand and readily accessible data, automated reports on your mobile phone and computer and connectivity to more than 100 data sources. Tomáš Dlabaja, coordinator of PFS/1 – Vehicle electronics MB, KV, explains: “Every Škoda car has approximately 300 vital bolted joints. If these joints are not tightened to the exact torque and angle, it poses a serious safety concern for the crew. And since we manufacture approximately 4,000 cars per day at our plants in Mladá Boleslav and Kvasiny, we need to analyse the quality of 1.3 million joints,” Dlabaja further adds, “In the area of car electronics, our tasks become even more difficult. A modern car is full of software and electronics. We conduct around 4,000 tests on each car, resulting in an additional 16 million results per day.”

Every second, more and more results flow in from the factory, and the PFS/1 team sifts through them in search of vital information. Efficiently processing such a vast amount of data helps to quickly identify the root causes of problems throughout the entire process – from development to parts suppliers to actual production.

Data analysts process around 1.3 million records on bolted joints and 16 million records related to the car’s electronics every day.

No more searching for a needle in a haystack

The PFS/1 team had to change the way they work, especially with the introduction of the software-intensive Enyaq model. “As a result, we developed a solution that has reduced error analysis from hours to seconds. Previously, we used to receive results at the end of the day after extensive effort,” says Dlabaja.

The enormous complexity of production makes it necessary to use advanced data analysis tools. “We produce two identical cars about once a week,” explains Dlabaja, noting that even minor details differentiate each car from another. “These factors made it challenging for us to detect errors. It was rare for a control unit to clash with another piece of equipment or for human errors to occur during assembly. We could not detect this quickly before,” explains Dlabaja, suggesting that uncovering the causes of errors was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

    Jiří Kramer

Data analyst for vehicle electronics and bolted joints from PFS/1 – Vehicle electronics MB, KV

We use data analytics in production in Mladá Boleslav and Kvasiny, and we have inspired our colleagues in VW Bratislava, who are currently working on their implementation. The same applies to our colleagues in India. We are also introducing our solutions within the VW Group.

    Results in minutes

Therefore, the PFS/1 team built information databases and started using several tools from the Microsoft Power Platform. “Thanks to Power BI, in particular, we can obtain the first results within minutes, and we can immediately collaborate with other experts to resolve specific errors,” says Dlabaja. They maintain communication with colleagues from Technical Development and Quality, as well as suppliers and production.

In addition, Power BI delivers clear statistics that help, for example, to monitor work operation difficulty or improve employee training. “Online and in real-time, we can display results for individual workplaces and teams. Through Power BI, we help hundreds of colleagues, not only in production. We simplify our work where previously we used to work with dozens of Excel spreadsheets,” adds Jiří Kramer, data analyst for vehicle electronics and bolted joints from PFS/1 – Vehicle electronics MB, KV.

    Tip

To boost employee motivation, we use a report called Bowling, which resembles a scoreboard at a bowling alley. These reports can be found at the assembly worksites for engine and brake testing by cylinders. In real-time, each worker (or “player”) can see their individual results, their team’s results and the record holder for that line. With a little exaggeration, everyone can compete for the best score.

    Adventure awaits around the corner

Eco-friendly travel is especially important during the summer holidays.

In the context of eco-friendly travel, you have likely encountered terms like ecotourism, regenerative travel, community tourism, ethical travel or nature tourism. These terms usually have a narrow meaning and focus on particular aspects of sustainable tourism. For example, regenerative travel centres around repairing existing damage, while ecotourism aims to promote responsible travel to natural areas. An ecotourist is a conscientious traveller who visits a place without damaging or changing it and is interested in environmental protection, as well as local culture and customs. As ecotourists, you can reduce your carbon footprint by travelling by train and exploring the beauty of the Czech Republic. In this regard, we will show you how to be an exemplary ecotourist.

    Plans and information

In addition to choosing a location, make sure that you plan your itinerary and gather information about the place, its culture and traditions before you go. This information will allow you to visit unexpected places and get the authentic experience that sightseeing holidays are all about.

    Accommodation and locals

Do some research to find interesting eco-operated guesthouses or family-run hotels owned by locals. They can also guide you to places where you can buy regional and seasonal food. In this way, you can help to improve the economic conditions of the locals, and the goods don’t have to travel long distances to you.

    On foot and together

Walk as much as possible and always follow marked routes. This approach benefits both your health and the environment. In addition, by using designated hiking trails, you will minimise any negative impact on the local nature (e.g. disturbing animals, damaging rare plants). Although solo travel can be enjoyable, it is often better to explore in small groups.

    Friendly and cleanly

Respect the natural resources you encounter at the various sites. Conserve water and electricity at the facilities you visit, do not take anything from the wild, avoid littering, and if possible, collect and remove your trash. The guiding principle is to leave the place in a better condition than you found it.

    Info

    Eco-travel awareness

According to a survey conducted by STEM/MARK for the House of Foreign Cooperation, 61% of 18‑to-30-year-olds in the Czech Republic lack an understanding of the concept of eco-travel. More than a third of them would like to get information about the topic. Moreover, 5% of young people actively engage in sustainable travel, while 33% are familiar with the concept but lack an interest in the issue.

    New microsite on sustainability

Škoda Auto has launched a microsite on sustainability in the English version of the online magazine Škoda Storyboard. It brings together comprehensive information on the carmaker’s numerous sustainability initiatives, including environmental, social sustainability and governance (ESG) topics and measures. The site aims to further promote Škoda Auto’s transparent communication and facilitate the exchange of information on these key topics.

The environmental section lists the measures that the Czech carmaker is implementing to minimise the impact of its business activities and reduce its carbon footprint. The section on social sustainability highlights Škoda’s role within its local operations, demonstrating its commitment to lead by example and create value by engaging with local communities both inside and outside its plants. In addition, the microsite represents the carmaker’s efforts to be a strong, reliable and long-term partner for employees, customers, dealers and the public.

Quality gets attention through the company

The Mindset Quality project, which is centred around a new corporate culture and quality strategy, is coming to a close. One of the objectives was to stimulate discussions on quality from various perspectives.

Quality mirrors company culture – A campaign that you may have noticed on the screens at the plants or on Škoda Space.

Towards the end of last year, as part of the Mindset Change campaign, a new initiative was introduced to address the changing customer demands and the need for transforming the approach to quality at Škoda Auto (see the December 2022 issue of Škoda Mobil). In line with the motto of the new corporate culture, “Uniqueness that we enjoy”, the Mindset Quality project aims to instil in employees an understanding of quality as a value and something that each of them can influence.

Between November and May, a series of Mindset Quality Interviews video podcasts featured discussions on this topic among managers from different areas. These interviews, hosted by moderator Petr Beneš, received a very positive response and significant viewership. Replays of the interviews are available in the Media Centre.

    Florian Weymar

Head of GQ – Quality Management

I have taken personal patronage of the Mindset Quality initiative and am pleased to support its promotion.

Selected episodes are available on YouTube for the general public. For example, Marek Jancák, Head of PF – Car Production department, shared his view on quality in one of the episodes. According to Jancák, the foundation is still the same, as the carmaker aims to create a product that succeeds on the market. “This is happening amid changing conditions, but we’re testing our adaptability and ability to follow trends. And that represents a higher level of quality – not solely focusing on the product but also considering the environment into which we’re introducing it,” explains Jancák in the video podcast, highlighting the importance of excellent teamwork throughout the carmaker to achieve quality. “It is not important who comes up with the idea but who supports it,” Jancák adds.

In the following episodes, other managers from various areas of the company reflect on the concept of quality from their perspectives.

The average rating of the video podcasts viewed was 4.8 out of a maximum of 5.

    More about quality

Building on the positive response to the first series of video podcasts, a new series was created, this time featuring experts from different fields instead of managers. These episodes have been available in the Media Centre since June. In addition, the Mindset Quality project can be accessed on the Degreed platform, where an educational path is prepared in the “expert shop”. This platform offers a centralised location for quality training and courses. The project also strives to raise the level of company culture and enhance employee satisfaction. Specifically, it aims to improve results regarding the quality of cooperation and communication issues across the entire company. The Cultural Mindset Index (CMX) and the Stimmungsbarometer will provide insights into whether improvements will be achieved.

“The series has contributed to stimulating discussions on quality in the context of corporate culture and company-wide strategy. Quality is reflected not only in our products but also in all our daily activities,” added Milan Dufek, Head of GQZ – Quality Management System.

The finest in the dealer network

In June, more than 180 employees from the Škoda dealer network, representing from nearly three dozen countries, gathered in Prague for the final round of the Škoda Challenge incentive programme. This event tested their expertise in 10 different categories, including mechanics, sales consultants, electric car experts, painters and others. Colleagues from Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Austria won the most “medal” positions across the categories. Team competitions were also held, with Slovakia emerging as the champion, followed by Austria and the UK. The Czech Republic won the eMobility teams category. The evaluation of the performances was carried out by 63 judges from Škoda Auto and external suppliers.

The Škoda Motorsport team arranged a reward for some of the participants. During the event, contestants were asked to guess the number of Octavia cars delivered to customers between the beginning of the year and the end of May. The 15 participants with the most accurate guesses were treated to a ride in a Fabia RS Rally2 competition special on the polygon in Příbram, with a professional driver behind the wheel. Interestingly, among these participants were the three winners of the competition.
