Overpass construction was completed in just 15 months.

D10 overpass completed to alleviate city traffic

At the end of August, the Laurin & Klement Overpass was finished, connecting the main plant in Mladá Boleslav with future development areas along the D10 motorway. Now, attention turns to the roundabout over the motorway, initiated by the Directorate of Roads and Motorways in mid-September. The goal with this traffic solution is to simplify truck routes and reduce the strain on Průmyslová Street, bordering Mladá Boleslav and Kosmonosy. Once the connecting roads are finalised, the intensity of truck traffic in front of Gate 13 will decrease by almost half. Trucks will use these new roads, accessing the plant area directly from the motorway via the Laurin & Klement Overpass and the new Gate 14. An added benefit: Most of the logistics associated with new car shipments will relocate out of the plant to a logistics complex that will be constructed on the other side of the D10 next year.

Škoda Auto to launch its own coffee

Launching in October, the “Curiosity Fuel” coffee will be cultivated, roasted and packaged by using environmentally and farmer-friendly practices. The beans are sourced from carefully selected farms in India and Tanzania, with roasting overseen by the local Jablum roastery in Mladá Boleslav–Bezděčín. Ultimately, Curiosity Fuel is set to replace all the coffee in the entire carmaker. Stay tuned for more in upcoming editions of Škoda Mobil.

Even better cooperation with the city

On 28 August, Škoda Auto representatives, the KOVO Trade Union and the management of Mladá Boleslav signed a memorandum on cooperation to bolster mutual relations, support joint actions and enhance the quality of life of the city residents and their immediate surroundings. Priorities include support for safety, kindergartens and children’s groups and building leisure facilities, activities for seniors, socially disadvantaged citizens or alternative culture outlets.

New models showcased at IAA Mobility

The IAA Mobility trade fair took place in Munich, Germany, from 5 to 10 September. Journalists from all over the world had the opportunity to view and test the upcoming generations of the Superb and Kodiaq, still in camouflage. Škoda Auto exhibited its cars in the city centre, where the Enyaq Respectline and the Vision 7S study were also on display.

    Payroll now fully electronic

The print minimisation project has reached the next stage. As of 1 September, you will no longer receive a printed pay slip. Instead, you can access them through the @SMART Electronic Payroll application on Škoda Space. However, if you require a paper version, you can use the Print2Me function. You will also find seven self-service information kiosks at all Czech plants where you can log in and print your pay slip. This change further supports our commitment to environmental protection.

The carmaker unveiled the fourth-generation Superb camouflaged in a liftback version, which has expanded in size. Boot capacity has now reached 645 litres.

    Group visit to Mladá Boleslav

How can we ensure long-term job security at Škoda Auto and within the VW Group? This was one of the topics at a meeting between the representatives of the carmaker and Gunnar Kilian, VW Group Board Member for HR and Truck & Bus. Alongside Klaus Zellmer, Chairman of the Board of Directors, attendees included Maren Gräf, Board Member for People and Culture, Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union, and Štěpán Lacina, Head of SP – Human Resources Planning, who met with him in Mladá Boleslav at the end of August. They agreed that continuous employee training is a key element to ensure competitiveness in the future. Škoda Auto fosters creativity and progressive ideas, as seen in the student car project. The latest, the Roadiaq for digital nomads, was presented to Kilian by co‑authors Adam Bubák and Agáta Fraňková (you can read her story here).

    24,000

That is the number of Škoda Auto employees who have been trained and upskilled to enhance their job security.

    New Passat from Česana unveiled

Volkswagen introduced the latest generation of the Passat, developed in conjunction with the next-generation Superb at Škoda Auto’s Technical Development. Both cars will be manufactured in Slovakia. The new Passat will be exclusively available in a Variant hatchback version and offer petrol and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Like the Superb, it will only have a DSG automatic transmission. The car has also grown in length and width, promising more interior space, which will feature up to a 15-inch display. A brand-new feature is the DCC Pro adaptive chassis control, which takes suspension technology to a new level.

  • Jubilee Škoda Classic Tour

In 2014, Michael Oeljeklaus, the former Board Member for Production and Logistics, came up with the idea of initiating the tour, realising that many Škoda employees, like him, had a classic car tucked away in their garage. Thus, the first annual classic car tour was born. It has grown in popularity, and this year on 2 September, the 10th edition saw participation from over 260 crews.

    Škoda Auto Tour Through Paradise

Škoda Classic Tour: For the 10th year, the carmaker’s employees and their loved ones gathered for the classic car tour, which attracted a record number of crews this time.

The tour began in 2014 with an idea from Michael Oeljeklaus, the former Board Member for Production and Logistics. He realised that many Škoda Auto employees, like him, had a classic car tucked away in their garage. This observation, evidenced by the stories of Škoda Auto employees and the interview in the September 2023 issue of Škoda Mobil, led to the idea of gathering and showcasing these vintage vehicles.  The inaugural classic car tour was attended by approximately 60 crews. It has remained a big hit, and this year on 2 September, over 260 crews has been registered to the 10th edition of the tour.

The enthusiasm was evident in both the perfectly restored cars and the number of meticulously preserved “patina” cars with an emphasis on the originality of every detail.

    Successful concept

The event is eagerly anticipated by Škoda Auto employees and their families for a long time in advance. “You can see it, for example, at the start, which stretched to two hours. However, we don’t want to turn anyone away by limiting capacity,” emphasises Vítězslav Kodym, Head of GKP – Product communications, who has been involved in organising the Škoda Classic Tour since the beginning. Volkswagen has also adopted this successful concept of the employee tour, although it limits the number of participants.

    1,486

The total number of classic cars that have participated over the years.

    9,495

That‘s how many metres all the measured sections for 10 years add up to.

    1,179.37

The combined distance of the routes of all 10 years in kilometres.

    28

The number of regularity tests organised throughout the event’s history.

    Passes through production halls

The tour traditionally starts in front of the Škoda Museum in Mladá Boleslav and concludes at the Metoděj Vlach Aviation Museum, taking in picturesque locations in the surrounding area along the way. This year, the crews visited the Semín fortress,  Sobotka and the Dobrovice sugar factory. For several years, a highlight has been the production halls – this time, it was the M14 Body Shop and the M15 Press Shop. “It’s a great experience for our employees. They can show their loved ones where they work, and we receive great support from Production and Logistics. It is organisationally demanding; everything has to be sorted out with the fire brigade and security. It wouldn’t be possible without the cooperation of all involved,” emphasises Kodym.

Other highlights of this year’s 135-kilometre-long track included passing through the test polygon for the Fabia, Kamiq and Scala cars and having an opportunity to snap photos with the upcoming generations of the Superb and Kodiaq cars, still with a camouflage cover. The overall winner of the race was Denis Šefara, Coordinator of the FIP/5 – IT Projects – Finance department. With his 1993 Toyota Supra GTE, he secured only 63 penalty points in the timed regularity sections. As a reward, he will experience a the main prize of the 10th Škoda Classic Tour – co-drive in the Fabia RS Rally2 special.

    My 10th anniversary Classic Tour

Martin Klapač and his family are regulars at the employee tour, and this year, he was surprised by a secret timed section.

You can’t miss his car among the Classic Tour competitors. Every year, Martin Klapač from the VAT/21 – TSC – Bodywork and Equipment department, along with his family, decorates the roof of his 1969 Škoda 100. It is one of the first cars of this type that were produced. He discovered it by chance when he and his wife were planning their wedding. He had wanted to ride to the ceremony in a classic car and found the car through an advert.

“I’ve been into classic cars for a long time, collecting cars, motorcycles and anything related. After our first daughter was born, we got an old pram and took our first ride with it on the roof. We change it every year; this year, it was a sled and skis. It’s our way of bringing back the way we used to travel,” says Martin.

He appreciates the great organisation of the Classic Tour, the perfectly planned route, the beautiful scenery and the consistently good weather. He has been a regular participant since the beginning, so he has seen interest in the race grow ever year. This year, there was record turnout. “With the increase in participants, waiting times on the road have understandably increased. One has to take that into account. In the first year, there were 60 cars. Now, there are well over than 200,” says Martin, noting that the organisation remains efficient despite the numbers.

The goal is to enjoy it

Even though his crew did not place at the top this year, Klapač doesn’t mind. He comes to enjoy the experience with his family. His daughters and wife join in, helping him with navigation and the timed sections. He has had victories before; he won the overall Classic Tour in 2020 and the regularity test in 2018.

His crew does not prepare for the race or train specifically for each discipline. They follow an itinerary, and some sections have to be completed as accurately as possible according to the set time. This time, it was 50 metres in 10 seconds. “I’ve noticed many people improving in this discipline; I suppose it can be trained. Some crews can achieve timing down to a hundredth of a second,” Martin notes.

This year, three timed sections were listed on the itinerary, along with a surprise one. Many crews spotted it late and and picked up penalty points, including Martin’s crew. “It was in the factory; the secret section followed right after the one on the itinerary. Even though it was marked, we missed it,” Martin says, mentioning that it impacted their final results.

    From cars to motorcycles

Martin Klapač is a collector and restorer of classic cars and especially motorcycles. He switched from cars to motorcycles mainly because they don’t take up as much space. He specialises in Czech motorcycles, particularly Jawa and ČZ. His dream is to open his own museum.

  • Five questions

    Five questions

    Roman Havelka

Head of EB – Concept development

You often participate in the Škoda Classic Tour with the oldest car in the line-up, a 1934 Tatra 57. How did you acquire it?

The car has been part of the family since my grandparents bought it in 1947. Around 1978, it was put in the garage, where it waited for its rebirth until 2017.

    What had to be done?

The restoration was complete, so to speak, down to the studs. New ash frame, overhauled mechanics, new plating and glass… In the end, it took three years, and it was carried out in Moravia, in Holešov, by people who are masters of several crafts, have insight and attention to detail and love classic cars.

Can you tell us something interesting about it?

Technically, it’s a very simple and robust car by today’s standards. It has a 6V electrical system, and the steering is right-hand drive, but it’s very precise – rack and pinion, and the engine is a 1.1-litre, air-cooled, four-cylinder boxer. There is a four-speed unsynchronised gearbox, which requires specific handling (i.e. throttle blip and clutch work), a Kardan shaft housed in a central tube, rear-wheel drive and steel-rope-operated drum brakes, which have very little efficiency compared with modern cars.

What care and preparation does it need before a race?

Surprisingly, nothing major: checking the oil and tyre pressure, charging the battery, cleaning the spark plugs, refuelling and the necessary mental and physical preparation of the crew.

How often do you participate in the Classic Tour, and what do you like best about it?

We’ve participated regularly since 2020 and always managed to complete the whole route without any complications. One of the things that keep us coming back every time is the excellent organisation, the interesting passes through the production plant, the beautiful routes through the countryside and, finally, the pleasant meetings with people who share the same hobby.

Emissions measured in hot and cold

Technical Development and Quality Management: Škoda Auto has expanded its emissions centres with new measuring boxes, climate chambers and other equipment for testing across a wide range of conditions. What is new?

The Emission Centre South recently added an extension, which has been in the works since 2021. Inside, experts from Technical Development are commissioning new technologies for measuring emissions under different climatic conditions, which will complement existing facilities and enable even more rigorous and varied testing. “The expansion was planned when the building was first designed, and we expected that new legislation would bring more intensive testing needs,” explains Cyril Kunštek, Specialist management and plan of investment project from ES/2 – Investment projects, administration of fixed assets. Measurements in varied conditions are essential not only to meet legislative requirements but also to tailor the cars to different markets and ensure consistent serial production quality control.

The carmaker can now carry out around 8,000 cylinder tests annually at both of its emissions centres.

A pre-chamber for tempering the car to the selected temperature has already been commissioned, along with a test box for standard conditions and another featuring a climate chamber. Another climate chamber, simulating conditions at different altitudes up to 5,500 metres above sea level, is also nearing completion.

    Top parameters

The climate chamber operates in conditions from -40 °C to +65 °C and at a relative humidity of 10% to 90% (for above-freezing temperatures). It can adjust the environment by 1 °C per minute during tests. All-wheel-drive cars can be tested here, with the cylinders able to exert a “brake” force of 250 kW and handle tests up to 300 km/h. Electric cars can also be tested here, but this is a more time-consuming process than for internal combustion engine cars, as the entire battery discharge cycle must be tested while driving. A special feature of the facility is an evacuation lift in case of a fire risk with an electric car. It can fit two at a time.

The efficiency of operation is ensured in part by the new pre-chamber. The cars must be tempered to 23 °C before regular emissions tests, but for climate tests, specific temperatures, even sub-zero, are required. “To do this, the car previously had to be tempered in the climate chamber for at least 12 hours. Now, we can prepare the car separately for a specific temperature,” says František Plát, coordinator of the EPS/3 – Emission laboratory.

    Emission laboratories support quality control

The emission laboratories are operated by Technical Development. The recent extension is a joint project with the Quality department. „The reason for this is the increase in the number of tests on random samples of vehicles directly from production and the customer network, as required by legislation,“ says Ondřej Čuban, coordinator of GQG-3/5 – Emissions & consumption measurement, RDE. The Emission Centre measures for all specialist departments and offers a unique model in the VW Group for linking development and the quality of the finished vehicle. “We leverage synergies to optimise the capacity utilisation of the laboratories, which leads to savings,” explains F. Plát.

    From the past

The first climate chamber turns 25

Car emissions have been measured in Mladá Boleslav since the 1960s, but the first comprehensive laboratory (now the Emission Centre North) began operations in 1997. Two years later, the first climate chamber became part of it. Emission tests were conducted at temperatures of -7 °C, but the chamber was also used for start-ability tests at lows of -28 °C, as well as defrosting and defogging tests. The Quality department tested the car’s driveability at temperatures ranging from -28 °C to +40 °C. To this day, the climate chamber, which has undergone continual upgrades, has been used by the Technical Development and Quality departments and even the Škoda Motorsport team.

    Interview

We test everything. Even where the key is

Quality Management: Jan Matoušek, who is in charge of functionality tests at Škoda Auto’s Quality department, describes how the qualitative tests of functionalities are conducted.

New cars are increasingly filled with digital technologies that need to be thoroughly tested before reaching customers. At Škoda Auto, this is the responsibility of a team using the eMeisterbock (see the Thorough testing of hundreds of functions section), which is one of the pillars of functional quality. Jan Matoušek has led this initiative since February and is UNECE’s expert coordinator for software quality features within the GQD-3/1 – Expert Group E/E/Infotainment. A graduate of the Faculty of Transport at the CTU, he joined Škoda Auto in 2016 and played a key role in starting the Student Talent Programme. He has been with the Quality department since 2019.

What does the eMeisterbock look like, and how does the testing work?

It’s a special test car, either an early prototype or a production car. We connect via data buses to the individual control units and capture all communication inside the car. We then test various functions under different conditions using a function sheet. In layman’s terms, we manually test every function of the car that involves its software.

Can you give a specific example?

We test the infotainment software and systems like keyless entry or the virtual pedal. But it’s not just a simple test of whether the car opens when the driver pulls the handle. For example, we also test which key positions on the car will lock or unlock the car, whether the unlock scenarios are working correctly and whether the desired animations of the lights during the greeting or farewell correspond to reality. Or whether the car correctly detects the key in the boot and doesn’t lock immediately once the fifth door closes. We run both day and night scenarios for a number of functions and ensure the Matrix-LED headlights behave the way they are supposed to.

What do you do when you find that something is not working properly?

When we identify a discrepancy, we relay it to the relevant Technical Development department, whose employees either resolve it themselves or collaborate with the suppliers responsible for the functionality.

How long do these tests take?

We always try to begin as early as possible in the development phase, and the tests run until the project is ready for customers. We operate in fortnightly cycles, during which the so-called trains are updated. You can think of them as packages of the current software and hardware for a specific model. So, every two weeks, new software might be installed in the car, which means another round of tests.

How many cars are you currently testing?

I have six colleagues from supplier companies with me on the team, each focusing on one car. The cars are tested in the eMeisterbock system right at the plants where they will be produced. We’re currently busy testing software following UNECE guidelines (learn more in the March 2023 issue of Škoda Mobil). In the coming year, we’ll shift our focus to the upgraded Enyaq and the upcoming Elroq compact electric car.

    Info

Thorough testing of hundreds of features

With the debut of the electric Enyaq in 2020, Škoda Auto’s Quality department started using the eMeisterbock system to test upcoming models and their ongoing updates, including both software and hardware. This is a special test car, where an engineering team continuously checks the correct functioning of numerous car features. For the Enyaq, for example, this includes 297 digital functionalities. It is not just about the individual functions but also about related sub‑functions and defined steps.

  • L&K Kampus gears up for launch

In about six months, Škoda Auto will be moving to its new headquarters. The workplaces here are divided into three categories based on the New Work concept. Standard workplaces designed for sharing are complemented by special workplaces in enclosed or meeting rooms. Not only will all 1,800 employees have ample seating, but they will also enjoy essential facilities, including a restaurant and a café.

    Infrastructure

What to expect at the L&K Kampus

In about six months, Škoda Auto will transition to its new headquarters. Here is an overview of some of the intriguing features awaiting you.

    Office facilities

Traditional office setups are now giving way to shared workspaces that foster teamwork. At the same time, they also bring cost savings to the company. At the Laurin & Klement Kampus, workplaces are divided into three categories based on the New Work concept. Primarily, these consist of standard, shareable workstations complemented by special spaces in enclosable or meeting areas. Even if all 1,800 employees are present, they will have ample seating. Employees will store work essentials in lockers, which will be equipped with felt bags to enable easy transport to the reserved space. The individual spaces, separated by screens, will ensure privacy, while modern floating ceilings made from recycled materials will provide for pleasant acoustics.

    Meetings and phone calls

The campus offers numerous enclosed spaces to complement the workstations, suitable for both large and small meetings. This includes more than 100 single-person acoustic booths and nearly 60 booths for up to four people. There are also dozens of meeting and screening rooms of varying sizes with capacity for up to 30 people. The 150 multifunctional offices can be used for small meetings. All spaces will be very well-lit thanks to the large number of windows measuring 180 cm in width and 210 cm in height. Large-format screens, rather than projectors, will be used for presentations there. The ground floor will feature a large hall for major events, which can be either expanded if necessary by connecting it to the lobby or divided into three smaller areas.

    Staff facilities

Eight lifts, each with a capacity of up to 13 people, facilitate movement throughout the building. In theory, if all employees came to work at exactly the same time, it would take six minutes for the last employee to reach their workstation from the ground floor. Bathrooms are located on each floor near the staircases, with the maximum distance to them from any point being 30 metres. Staff will have access to fully equipped kitchenettes, each serving approximately 46 people.

    Restaurant and café

The ground floor will feature a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating for a total of more than 300 people. This venue will also allow for multifunctional use for work events, such as guest lectures and workshops. The restaurant will be complemented by a smaller café with several dozen seats. A terrace full of greenery will be available for various purposes and can also act as an informal meeting area.

  • Škoda Auto’s commitment to nature

Back in 2013, Škoda Auto summarised its sustainability goals in the GreenFuture strategy, which includes a comprehensive set of measures for sustainable environmental protection. The strategy’s guiding philosophy is to minimise the environmental impact of all products and services, including mobility, keep ecosystems intact, create a positive impact on society and develop the region.

    Environment under protection

GreenFuture: In 2013, Škoda Auto consolidated its sustainability goals under the GreenFuture strategy, which includes a comprehensive set of measures for sustainable environmental protection.

Environmental protection has been integral to Škoda Auto’s operations for many years. Given the extensive measures in place, the GreenFuture strategy was introduced 10 years ago. Its mission is to minimise the environmental impact of all products and services, including mobility, to preserve ecosystems, create a positive impact on society and develop the entire region.

At Škoda Auto, we are walking the talk regarding sustainability. Our GreenFuture strategy is proof of this: We have defined sustainability as a core value and firmly anchored it in our corporate strategy. We are implementing comprehensive measures not only at our international state-of-the-art production sites but also throughout the value chain. In collaboration with our partners, we are pursuing the goal of continuously minimising the ecological footprint of our business activities and products.

    Andreas Dick

Board Member for Production and Logistics

This strategy consists of three main parts: GreenProduct focuses on developing the most environmentally friendly cars, GreenRetail promotes sustainable management at dealer and service outlets, and GreenFactory addresses all activities aimed at resource-friendly production and waste reduction.

    Important milestones

Over the past 10 years, the GreenFuture strategy has seen many outstanding successes (refer to the timeline). In addition to measures in manufacturing, car design and the sophisticated use of recycled materials, it has also incorporated social responsibility programmes. For example, the Škoda Trees initiative has led to the restoration and planting of forests, alleys and green areas in the Czech Republic, with over 1 million seedlings planted. By 2017, more than 50% of the carmaker’s electricity consumption was sourced from renewable energy, and this percentage continues to rise.

    Carbon-neutral carmaker

Škoda Auto is also working on increasing sustainability throughout its entire value chain. This includes, for example, the extensive use of recycled and recyclable materials and the re-use of high-voltage batteries from electric cars in stationary stations before they are thoroughly recycled and their raw materials are used to create new cells. All these steps are taken with the goal of a long-term reduction in greenhouse gas emissions throughout the car’s life cycle, supporting the VW Group’s goal of being carbon-neutral by 2050.

    Societal impact

Since 2007, Škoda Auto has published a Sustainability Report every two years to highlight its goals and progress. In 2022, it earned a spot among the Top 10 companies in the pilot ESG rating by the international CEMS programme, which operates in the Czech Republic within the Prague University of Economics and Business.

The carmaker and its employees regularly participate in environmental volunteer activities (among others, Let’s Clean Up the Czech Republic, Earth Hour and Biodiversity Day). It has been participating in the #Project1Hour initiative on Earth Day for several years. This year marks the third GreenWeek, where employees can take part by watching lectures, listening to moderated talks or participating in workshops. In August, the carmaker also introduced a detailed sustainability website with posts covering all three pillars of the GreenFuture strategy.

    Survey

Which step in the GreenFuture strategy has contributed most to shifting the perception of employees and the company?

    David Harazim

    PSU/4 – Coordinator ECMS, MCC

Initially, it was definitely communication, since we were looking for ways to promote individual activities and, in turn, gather ideas from people, such as through Green ZEBRA, and execute them.

    Lenka Bočková

Head of SBB – HR Business Partnering

Setting specific measurable environmental targets helped everyone to see where the company wanted to go. At the same time, ecology became part of work discussions, which also spurred personal initiative among the employees.

    František Pelech

    Project Coordinator ECMS & GreenRetail

VAS – After Sales Systems and Resources

I think the most important step was bridging the gap between people from different departments who have something to say on the topic of sustainability and especially the circular economy.

    Rostislav Houba

    Head of GSP-3 – MGMT product sustainability & CO2

By far the top tangible move towards decarbonisation was the strategic shift from conventional to electric models.

Pavel Vacek, then Head of PS – Brand Management, spearheaded the implementation of the GreenFuture strategy. What did he reveal in an interview published in the January 2013 issue of Škoda Mobil?

At Škoda Auto, environmental responsibility is paramount. For a company with such a rich history, long-term planning is particularly important. Early in 2012, I was tasked with addressing environmental and energy-saving challenges within the company. Several important events have since taken place, the most significant of which was at the Geneva Motor Show, where the VW Group’s environmental targets for 2018 were concretely outlined for the first time. For us, this means decreasing energy and water consumption by 25% and significantly reducing the environmental burden of CO2 emissions, solvents and waste. The Škoda brand is keen to adopt new and more efficient technologies, reduce pollutants emitted into the air and a lot of other measures, particularly in production. Of course, collaboration within the VW Group is crucial.

  • Rising star of design

During the Roadiaq student car project, Agata Fraňková impressed the brand’s head of design with her talent and earned a unique internship at Škoda Design. Under the guidance of Oliver Stefani and Karel Neuhold, the student from the Secondary Vocational School of Engineering is on track to realise her dream of a career in this field. If it was up to her, she would give Škoda cars a sportier face.

    For the experience

    From apprenticeship to design studio

While working on the Roadiaq student car, Agáta Fraňková impressed the brand’s head of design with her talent and secured a unique internship at Škoda Design.

Agáta, who is currently in her third year at the Secondary Vocational School of Engineering (SOUs) with the goal of becoming a painting technician, so impressed the management of the ED – Škoda Design department that they immediately offered her an internship. “It was quite funny, even though I was a bit rattled in the beginning. I was in the paint booth, in my overalls, painting. The foreman came knocking and sent me to the principal’s office, and there they told me they wanted me to do an internship in design,” recalls Agáta, who had long been dreaming of a design career but didn’t know how to achieve it. In a new section of Škoda Mobil, she shares what it is like to head into the Škoda brand’s design studio to gain experience.

Agáta’s ongoing internship in Česana is truly exceptional. “I was going there instead of doing the practical experience of working with the line, which we do in the second year,” she says. “I already learned a lot here at the end of the previous year, and I’m looking forward to this year,” Agáta adds, noting that she tried to relax as much as possible over the holidays and indulge in various hobbies like car photography.

    Ivo Vollman

Teacher – Czech language, soft skills, SEB/2 – General Education Subjects

What we told our students at the beginning of the Azubi car project came true for Agáta: They have a unique chance to do things they enjoy, meet interesting people and go places not accessible to everyone. After that, it’s up to each of them. My wish for Agáta is that she doesn’t hesitate on her journey and that, armed with humility and a desire to explore, she “conquers the world”.

    Oliver Stefani

Head of ED – Škoda Design

We’re happy to partner with the Azubi car project, a Škoda-brand student car initiative. Through this, our designers offer students an insight into their professional work and can even inspire them. This year, Agáta Fraňková’s hidden talent surfaced, earning her an internship in our design studio.

    Encountering modern technology

What did Agáta learn during her time with the Škoda Design team? “The designers, headed by Oliver Stefani and Karl Neuhold (Head of EDE – Design exterior – ed.), taught me, for example, the correct proportions of sketches, and I feel that I’ve improved a lot in this area. And I started working with the graphics programs they use there. I also learned how to use a modern tablet with a pencil, which allows you to sketch practically like on paper, which was new to me,” Agáta notes.

Throughout her internship, she has worked with other Škoda Design experts. “The environment is very friendly, and there’s a team spirit there,” she says. She has also had a taste of what it is like to work under pressure when deadlines are looming. “It’s stressful, but I could get used to it,” she adds.

The young design hopeful says she will now do everything she can to become a designer. “I have my feet firmly planted on the ground, and I know nothing is guaranteed, but I’m trying,” she says humbly. Above all, for this year, her goal is to successfully complete her apprenticeship and stay in touch with the design department. “I already know that I will do a two-year extension with a high school diploma, then I’ll think about where to go from there. Maybe I’ll study abroad,” she considers. She is also eyeing some language courses and English exams.

Student Agáta would be happy if Škoda cars showcased various faces. As such, she is looking forward to the upcoming electric models in a new design language.

    Cars etched under the skin

Although this story does not have a happy ending yet, it certainly sounds like a fairy tale. Sometimes, Agáta also sees it that way when she gets lost in dreams and wonders, “How did I end up here?” However, as they say, she has always had a rendezvous with destiny. Drawing is her greatest passion, and she is constantly busy with it. She most often associates it with cars, for which she also has a special passion. “It runs in the family a bit; we have nice cars at home,” she says with a smile. She notes that her first childhood drawing was allegedly that of a car.

When she is not sketching a car, she is coming up with different graphics and decals in a computer game that let her design body textures. On weekends, she likes to go to car events. “I enjoy tuning; I like cars that seem aggressive and dynamic,” she says. At these events, she also takes pictures of cars as she seeks to refine her eye.

However, not everything in Agáta’s life is about cars. “I’ve been approached to design wall patterns and rooms. Of course, I designed my own room,” Agáta shares. And her room is again a reflection of her interests. There must be a place for a computer – properly “tuned”, of course – on which she can create those graphics for the cars in the game. But she also plays her favourite video games on it.

    Tip

If you are intrigued by Agáta’s story, you can read her other interesting insights in the Škoda Storyboard online magazine or tune into the #ExploreSkoda podcast. In one episode, she and her teacher, Ivo Vollman, were featured guests.

Her dream is a sports car

In her room, alongside her drawing and other graphic work tools and supplies, there is a large collection of model cars and car-themed posters. Agáta has a soft spot for Japanese tuning specials, such as the Felicia convertible on her door. The talented young drawer concedes, “I really like the first-generation Fabia and Octavia,” noting these “older models” still impress her today. She is also fond of the current Kodiaq RS and dreams of having it in her garage, alongside a sports car like the Porsche 911 GT3, whose design she thinks is “outstanding”.

If she could, she would like to give Škoda cars a sportier look. She would definitely like to design a sports car, even though she knows that such a car would be unlikely to see mass production.

    Painter by chance

Agáta chose to study painting at SOUs by chance. “I originally wanted to go to an art high school, but that would have meant daily commutes to Prague. My brother suggested that if I wanted to do something with paints, I should try this field. My mom wasn’t thrilled, but I was hooked,” says Agáta, describing her journey from Vojkovice near Mělník to Mladá Boleslav.

Already in her first year, she was eager to join the student car project, but she only got the opportunity in her second year, when students transformed an Enyaq model into a caravan called the Roadiaq. Originally, Agáta was supposed to be in charge of painting the bodywork, but she offered to help with sketches of the initial design and showed that she can really draw. Oliver Stefani, Head of ED – Škoda Design, and Jiří Hadaščok, Coordinator of EDE/2 – Design exterior – team 2, were also present when the car’s first sketches were made. “It was incredible to meet them. It was obvious that I’d grabbed their attention, but then nothing happened for a while,” Agáta says as she recalls the period before she was invited to do an internship at the design studio.
