WHAT IS Happening at ŠKODA AUTO
COVID-19 roundtable
At the end of May, ŠKODA AUTO presented its long-term coronavirus-fighting strategy to journalists through the COVID-19 digital roundtable update. The speakers presented the vaccination campaign, called the #SKODAAUTOhelps project, as well as safety measures and regular testing. The conference was attended by Maren Gräf, Board Member for Human Resources Management, Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union, Miroslav Kroupa, Head of PS – Brand Management, Jiří Prokop, Head of SG – Health Services and Ergonomics, and Michal Kadera, Head of SR – External Affairs.
respirators, face masks and protective shields were distributed by the carmaker to its employees from the beginning of the pandemic until the end of May.

STRATEGY 2030, NEXT LEVEL ŠKODA
ŠKODA AUTO CEO Thomas Schäfer presented the carmaker’s new corporate strategy at a press conference on Thursday, 24 June. In his presentation, which was meant for a broader audience and not only journalists, he laid out the main steps of the company’s future direction in terms of drive electrification, expansion into new markets and digitisation.
Details and video from the presentation can be found on ŠKODA Storyboard.
Trucks are pumping ecological fuel
In the Kosmonosy industrial zone near Gate 13, the new mobile LNG station, GasNet, is now accessible to the public. Drivers can use it to pump liquefied natural gas, which is an ecological variant of the freight transport fuel. LNG combustion has significantly lower emissions of nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and hydrocarbons than diesel. Last year, ŠKODA AUTO was the first company to heed the Czech Gas Association’s call to support the use of LNG, and it actively wants to motivate its carriers to do so. In the autumn, driver comfort will increase thanks to a stationary station, which will replace this mobile station in Kosmonosy.
Experiences with ŠKODA AUTO
Veterans in the highlands
On the last Saturday in May, 60 historical cars set off for the 220-kilometre-long Seven Castles Trial. On the track winding around the castles in the Central Bohemian Highlands, there were 10 ŠKODA cars, six of which were dispatched by the ŠKODA Museum with crews comprising journalists from leading Czech media outlets. This year’s race was held in the spirit of commemorating the 120th anniversary of the carmaker’s operations in motorsport, of which ŠKODA AUTO was a partner.
Visiting Porsche’s home
The exhibition in Ferdinand Porsche’s birthplace is open to the public once again. The Chairman of the Board of Directors, Thomas Schäfer, visited the landmark in Vratislavice nad Nisou for the first time at the beginning of June, as well as the On the Wave of Electromobility exhibition and installations, to mark the anniversary of the ŠKODA brand.

Achievements and Trophies
Another triumph in the CZECH TOP 100
For the 24th time, the carmaker has topped the renowned ranking of the most important companies in the Czech Republic. It is all the more valuable that it defended its No. 1 spot because last year, which was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, had a major impact on the automotive sector in particular. ŠKODA AUTO is by far the most frequently awarded company in the history of the ranking, which dates back to 1993. In the annual overview, important Czech companies are evaluated on the basis of current developments in economic and other indicators.

ŠKODA AUTO Helps
More cars to care for people
ŠKODA AUTO is lending a total of 16 cars free of charge for one year to health and social care providers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The first five went to Klaudián Hospital, a local homecare service provider and the branch of the Diocesan Charity in Mladá Boleslav. Another eight vehicles will be used by organisations in the Kvasiny region and three in Vrchlabí. It is part of the #SKODAAUTOpomaha initiative, as part of which the carmaker has already donated 100 OCTAVIA cars or provided shared cars or electric scooters for free.
Aid arrives in India
A total of EUR 1 million in humanitarian aid for India, which has been plagued by the COVID-19 pandemic, has reached its destination thanks to the great efforts of the company’s employees. Medical equipment, an oxygen generator and several hundred pressure cylinders travelled to India on two planes from Ostrava Airport. The aid was provided by ŠKODA AUTO in cooperation with the VW Group.
Details on the demanding logistics operation and video can be found on ŠKODA Storyboard.
Motorsport
120 years at the start
Successful and unlucky. Such was the entry of the Mladá Boleslav carmaker into the world of motorsport 120 years ago. Late in the night of 30 June 1901, Narcis Podsedníček riding an L&K Slavia B motorcycle crossed the finish line of the race from Paris to Berlin and won his category. Unfortunately, he could not find any of the commissioners there; his arrival was confirmed only by a patrolman, and the organisers did not officially recognise his victory. However, this does not change the fact that it was then and there that the long and successful history, from which the current ŠKODA Motorsport arose, began to be written.
You can read more about racing history in the supplement to this issue of ŠKODA Mobil.
ŠKODA AUTO donated CZK 1 million to the Hospital Clowns organisation, which helps children and seniors in difficult life situations by using a special kind of humour. The carmaker has been cooperating with it since 2002.
Production and Logistics

New FABIA at the Starting Line
At the main plant, series production of the fourth-generation FABIA model will begin on the MQB-A0 Group platform
n Monday, 28 June, the first fourth-generation ŠKODA FABIA will leave the production lines of the Mladá Boleslav plant. The lines have been extensively modified to enable production of the latest generation of this popular small car. “The start of production is always an exceptional moment that we are carefully preparing for. We’ve invested a total of EUR 110 million (almost CZK 3 billion) in extensive modernisation and further automation of production processes. It’s great to see how each gear fits together and everything works smoothly. I would like to thank the entire team for their excellent joint performance, and I’m glad that we can make a significant contribution to the FABIA model’s success through our work”, says Michael Oeljeklaus, Board Member for Production and Logistics.
This small car of the Czech brand is one of the most popular in its segment, and ŠKODA AUTO has invested almost CZK 3 billion in modifying the production lines.
The ŠKODA FABIA will be built on the same line as the SCALA and KAMIQ models. Before production started, the Czech carmaker had also made adjustments in the Press Shop and the Welding Shop. A number of complex and physically demanding production operations will be taken over by robots, thus enabling a high degree of automation of production processes.
For the first time, the FABIA is using the VW Group’s modular MQB-A0 platform, which enables a significant expansion of the safety and comfort equipment previously reserved for higher-end cars. With a length of 4,108 millimetres, it exceeds the 4-metre threshold for the first time, and with a width of 1,780 millimetres, it offers even more space than its predecessor. In addition, the car’s boot volume has increased by 50 litres to a total of 380 litres. ŠKODA AUTO offers the new-generation FABIA with front-wheel drive and manual transmission or with a seven-speed automatic DSG transmission. Five petrol engines of the current EVO generation from the VW Group combine low emissions with high efficiency and dynamics. In the small car segment, FABIA achieves a record-low air resistance co-efficient of cx 0.28, which, in combination with the optional 50-litre fuel tank, enables more than 900 kilometres of driving in the WLTP mode. ED
Did you know that...
… the first generation of the FABIA model, which was introduced all the way back in 1999, was one of the most successful models in the small car segment, with more than 1.7 million cars sold? The same victory was also achieved by its second generation, which has been on the market since 2007. Together with the third generation, introduced in 2014, a total of 4.5 million cars have been delivered to customers worldwide since the model was first launched.

PAS – Launch Management Project SMALL
Preparations for the start of production of the new generation FABIA was made easier by the fact that this model is built on the same production line and MQB-A0 platform as the SCALA or KAMIQ, so we’ve had experience with many of the elements.

When dealing with start of production from a quality perspective given the pandemic situation we made maximum use of the new communication tools, which in many cases proved to be more effective. The FABIA also has some specific technical details, such as the spoiler on the fifth door, which consists of a metal and a plastic part. We had to master a completely new process of fitting and assembling them for the customer to get a part in top quality.

The car’s individual components have certain manufacturing tolerances, and minor ones are also created during assembly. At first glance, these are insignificant values; however, they affect the joint sizes, various details or easy manufacturability. We balance these tolerances in the series pilot hall so that there are no problems during the production of the new FABIA and its resulting quality reaches a top level.

Ice Hockey World Championship
Ice Hockey World Championship
Green Fleet for the Championship
For the first time, the hockey championship’s organising team used only ŠKODA ENYAQ iV electric cars
his year marked the 29th time that the Mladá Boleslav carmaker was the main sponsor of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, thus maintaining a tradition that started in 1992. This year’s milestone was the deployment of a fleet consisting of 45 ENYAQ iV electric cars, which a local importer handed over to the organisers. “Electromobility is a challenge, but if we look at it from the environmental angle, the whole world is moving in this direction. I’m glad that ŠKODA AUTO, our main sponsor, is also taking these big steps towards better solutions”, said Edgars Buncis, who heads the championship’s organisation committee.
95,000
Kilometres were driven by the fleet of 45 ENYAQ iV cars during the Ice Hockey World Championship in Riga, Latvia.
Naturally, the electric car fleet involved different sets of logistics. In addition to the growing network of public charging stations in Riga, car drivers could also rely on special AC charger sets that the brand’s importer had placed at both of the stadiums. The importer also arranged for the training of drivers and managers who were using the car for a week. “The big difference with a regular car is its recuperation, which makes driving not only more economical but also more comfortable. Another important part of the training was the charging and its planning”, describes Māris Balodis, logistics manager of the organising committee and also one of the fleet drivers. He praised the spaciousness of the ENYAQ iV model and especially its quiet and dynamic performance.
For AUTO 100 Latvija, the ŠKODA brand importer in Latvia, the championship came at the ideal time. The ENYAQ iV model was just being introduced on the local market. “It immediately became the best-selling electric car in the first four months of this year. I believe this trend will help us achieve a historic sales record”, says the importer’s manager, Māris Jansons. ED
Trophy from ŠKODA Design
Canadian hockey players triumphed in no small part thanks to Andrew Mangiapane from Calgary. At the World Championship, he received the Most Valuable Player award, which includes a crystal trophy. It was designed by ŠKODA Design under the leadership of Peter Olah, Head of EDI –Design Interior, Colour and Trim. The work inspired by ice skating marks relates to the design of ŠKODA cars via clearly shaped surfaces, harmonious proportions and distinctive lines.
Cardboard fans
Thanks to ŠKODA AUTO, fans were able to participate in the championship at least symbolically
mid strict conditions, at least some of the fans were able to be on the stands of the Ice Hockey World Championship in Riga, but only right at the end. Otherwise, because of the measures against COVID-19, stadiums and travel to the championship were banned for those supporting the teams. Therefore, the Czech carmaker’s marketing specialists prepared a special event that allowed them to support their favourites during the matches. Fans uploaded their photo through a website where they could select the team they were rooting for. The website automatically added their photo to the corresponding hockey jersey.š. The result was sent and then taken over by partner agencies in Riga. They printed life-size cut-outs, which they delivered to stadiums: 600 seats were reserved for them during every match in the Riga Arena, and 200 seats in the Olympic Sports Centre. ED

At least this much fans had their printed portraits placed in the arenas during the Ice Hockey World Championship matches.

How not to panic when you see an accident
Useful advice on what to do if you find yourself at the site of an accident with an injury
specially during the holidays, on long holiday trips or even short bike trips, you may come across an accident. In this case, each of us has a civic duty to help, but it is important not to panic.
The biggest priority is your safety
A dead or injured rescuer can’t help anyone. Therefore, in the event of an accident, think about your own health and that of your fellow passengers first. Don’t make hasty decisions. Stop at a sufficient distance from the accident (depending on the situation, either behind or in front of it) so there is enough space for the rescue units to arrive and do their work. Put on a reflective vest before getting out of the car, preferably on the shoulder side of the road. Unless they are helping, other passengers should wait a few metres behind the crash barriers or as far away from the road as possible.
First steps at the accident site
Mark the place with a triangle, prepare your first aid kit and call an ambulance – you can use the Ambulance application to determine the location of the accident more precisely. On the call, specify: your name and location, what happened and to whom. Do not hang up. Switch on the speakerphone to free your hands and provide help based on the instructions that you receive.
How to care for the injured
Put on rubber gloves from the first aid kit and determine whom you need to help first. Preference is given to wounds with massive bleeding and people who are unconscious. Also, those who call for help are usually in better shape than those who do not. Unless necessary, do not pull the injured person out of the car. Also, be sure not to put your head in any area where an airbag could still deploy.
When a life is at stake
Do not try to assess whether the wounded person has a heartbeat; unless you are a professional, you will not be able to tell anyway. Focus on whether the injured person is breathing. You can determine this by looking at the person’s chest and placing your ear to their mouth. If they are not breathing, check the injured person’s airways by tilting their head, moving their chin to the front and removing items from their mouth if necessary. If the injured person is still not breathing, do not start artificial respiration; it is essential to maintain blood circulation by massaging the heart. In this case, fix the injured person’s head and pull them out of the car. If the injured person is breathing, leave them in a stabilised position or keep their head in the correct position inside the car. It is also essential to stop the bleeding. Use gloves or a bag and stop the massive bleeding directly in the wound with your hand. If possible, apply a pressure bandage.
Waiting for the paramedics
If you have already administered first aid, do not leave the wounded persons unattended. Talk to them, calm them down, stroke them and provide them with shade. As a precaution, also prepare fire extinguishers in case they are needed; for example, get help from truck drivers, who are well equipped for such situations. ED
While in line at the accident site
If you arrive at the accident later and it is not up to you to carry out first aid, keep in mind that you can still help the rescuers, yourself and others to alleviate the situation.
Keep the way clear for rescue vehicles, even after they pass through. Other rescuers can still arrive.
If it is hot, help those in need, such as the elderly, young children and pregnant women, for example, by providing shade or giving fluids.
Switch off the engine when waiting for a long time.
Do not walk far away from your car so you do not prevent the line from moving.
Education as the safety basis
he safest possible road traffic is a priority for ŠKODA AUTO, and the carmaker thinks about it not only when designing its cars. The carmaker supports a number of activities in this area, which has been expanded by the partnership with the Start Driving project. It focuses on educating young drivers, who are the most at-risk group in terms of accidents. Practical demonstrations in the safe driving centres and subsequent driving in traffic help graduates to deepen their skills in driving vehicles, and traffic-psychological seminars focus on responsible traffic behaviour. The project is organised by the Association of Driving Schools of the Czech Republic in cooperation with the Association of Safe Driving Centres, and it is funded from the Damage Prevention Fund of the Czech Insurers’ Bureau.
700
more than this number of hours of traffic education with the NFŠA support took place in the Mladá Boleslav region this year.
Educational projects supported by the ŠKODA AUTO Endowment Fund (NFŠA) in the Mladá Boleslav, Vrchlabí and Kvasiny regions form a long-term pillar. This year, a lot of the teaching took place in the online environment, and the school evaluations were very positive. The findings of the ŠKODA AUTO Traffic Safety Research Team, as well as visual aids that we designed, among others, are used there. After the holidays, webinars are also planned for the carmaker’s employees, which will focus on traffic accidents and can be viewed on ŠKODA Space. NFŠA is preparing other grants for dates in the autumn. ED
Coronavirus
Coronavirus
ŠKODA AUTO FORvaccination
Colleagues are reaching out to employees with a new vaccination campaign
ollowing intensive internal communication on the fight against the coronavirus over the past 14 months, ŠKODA AUTO is starting another phase to inform more than 35,000 employees in its Czech plants.
The new ŠKODA AUTO for Vaccinations campaign aims to answer the most common questions related to the administration of the COVID-19 vaccine in a simple way and simultaneously present how people benefit from getting vaccinated. “Doctors and scientists agree that this is one of the most effective ways to reduce the COVID-19 pandemic and return to normal life. Since our priority is the health of employees and their families, we strive to provide detailed and open information about all aspects of the protective vaccine administration”, says Jiří Prokop, Head of SG – Health Services and Ergonomics. In addition to detailed texts informing about the latest study findings and recommendations from doctors and scientists, the information campaign seeks to describe the vaccination benefits in the words of specific employees who have already received the vaccine. For example, the fire department coordinator is in favour of vaccinations to keep his team at full strength, the security officer is looking forward to travelling more easily with his family, and the plant physician wants us to finally throw away our protective face masks and respirators thanks to the vaccinations. Colleagues from other areas have also taken part.
To raise awareness of vaccination opportunities, the campaign uses a wide variety of communication channels to reach all employees at the Czech plants. Most of them work in production, where communication is directed through ŠKODA Mobil, ŠKODA Weekly, posters and stickers in washrooms, as well as information screens and disinfection stands. The central continuously updated source of information is the ockovani.skoda-auto.cz website, which you can access, along with ŠKODA Space, after logging in with your DZC username and LDAP password (detailed instructions can be found in the May 2021 issue of ŠKODA Mobil).
The carmaker’s management, in cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union, has previously called on employees to use the state vaccination system, and the Board Members set an example by getting vaccinated as soon as the state vaccination system rules allowed them to do so. The vaccination campaign also motivates employees through the Cafeteria ŠKODA Benefits programme. Every employee who gets vaccinated against coronavirus will receive 300 points (corresponding to CZK 300) in the internal benefits system, which can be exchanged for a wide range of benefits and services from external partners or ŠKODA AUTO. Rules
Except at the office that you share with your regular colleagues, the mandatory respiratory protection still applies since even a vaccinated person can continue to transmit the infection and endanger others.
The exception to mandatory on-site testing goes into effect for fully (both doses) vaccinated people on 4 June. You can prove this by showing a certificate generated on the ocko.uzis.cz website. If you were vaccinated outside of the ŠKODA AUTO medical facility, you must e-mail a scan of this certificate to: prohlidky.prevence@skoda-auto.cz.
An issued certificate also means that you can, for example, receive spa rehabilitation care or take part in authorised events where a test would otherwise be required.
Are you for vaccinations?
Where: For vaccinations, use the Central Reservation System of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic at registrace.mzcr.cz; you will also find a link to it below in the form of a QR code. On the ockoreport.uzis.cz website, you will see the current number of people waiting at the individual vaccination places, as well as the number of people vaccinated in the past few days. In many places, waiting times are now very short – only a few days.
Who: Anyone over the age of 16 can currently register in the Central Reservation System.
How: Vaccination is considered a medical facility treatment or examination; as such, it is carried out either outside of working hours or during working hours when the employee is excused for the necessary time up to a maximum of one shift on a given day.
Enter the Central Registration System and register to get the vaccination here.

Group Visit
We Will Complete the Transformation Together
Daniela Cavallo, who heads the VW Group’s General and Group Works Council, visited Mladá Boleslav for the first time
t the end of May, the KOVO Trade Union, led by Chairman Jaroslav Povšík, welcomed special visitors to the Mladá Boleslav plant: Daniela Cavallo and other colleagues from the VW Group (see the Group Visit). On this occasion, the new most senior representative of the Group’s unions shared how ŠKODA AUTO perceives its employees and what the carmaker’s dialogue with its social partner entails.
We know that the Czech Republic has been hit really hard by the coronavirus pandemic, so I wish all the employees and their families a speedy recovery from its effects.
In addition to the successful model offensive, Cavallo sees the success of the Czech brand in the employees’ effort as well. “They’re doing a great job. Thanks to them, ŠKODA AUTO is an established company in our industry and rightly enjoys respect and recognition within the VW Group and beyond”, added Cavallo. She also said that it was thanks to this effort that ŠKODA AUTO took over the Group’s responsibility for managing the regions of India, North Africa and Russia, which are very important areas for the VW Group. “This also confirms the trust that the VW Group places in the Czech carmaker and its employees”, said D. Cavallo.
In her discussion with the Czech trade union members, she praised the extraordinary continuity and reliability of the social partner, KOVO Trade Union, led by Jaroslav Povšík, who has been a member of the ŠKODA AUTO’s Supervisory Board for almost 30 years, while also paying attention to transformation processes. She appealed to her Czech colleagues: “Think about the future, embark on new things, use qualifications and lifelong learning, get others involved.” She cited the successful transformation of the plant in Vrchlabí as a good example of a joint and promising solution reached by the employee representatives and the carmaker. On her visit, she also spoke highly of the work of all the ŠKODA AUTO employees. “I would like to thank them for their performance to date and send them greetings from their colleagues in Germany, but also from employees of the Group’s European and Global Works Councils”, she added. She noted that last year, the VW Group had wanted to focus on the 125th anniversary of the carmaker’s foundation and 115 years of car production in Mladá Boleslav. Unfortunately, the celebrations were complicated by the coronavirus pandemic. “You can be sure that for a lot of people in Wolfsburg and throughout the VW Group, this tradition means a lot”, said D. Cavallo, noting that they would be happy to catch up with joint celebrations within the VW Group. ED

Individual Approach
Interview with Hynek Homér, Integrity Ambassador, foreman from PF1-M/113 V – Assembly Line MB I
What inspired you to become an integrity ambassador?
My interest in the topic was piqued by a survey in ŠKODA Mobil. I joined the group of ambassadors because I wanted to know how other colleagues view integrity at the carmaker.
How do you see the ambassadorship in your production department?
For me, this is an opportunity to inform colleagues who have not yet been introduced to the integrity topic on what exactly it is and what form it takes.
What would you like to achieve as an ambassador?
I would like to help people not be afraid to do the right thing. I want to lead by example by showing them that it is acceptable to act according to one’s conscience.
What benefits do you see in employees following the integrity principles in practice?
In particular, it will lead to transparency and improved interpersonal relationships. In the end, every problem that goes unreported gets worse, as do bad workplace relationships. For example, if an employee accidentally damages something and reports it, it is immediately corrected and everything is solved. By contrast, an unreported problem can end in customer dissatisfaction. And all of us want to prevent that.
How do you understand integrity at ŠKODA AUTO?
It is a summary of the correct behaviour of employees at all levels and positions and is derived from the corporate culture. Recently, I’ve noticed significant improvements, especially in the workplace, as supervisors have greater trust in their subordinates, and vice versa.
Integrity is often associated with a situation where there is no one right solution, and it’s necessary to follow one’s own values and conscience and often to prove personal courage. In your work, have you ever encountered a situation where you couldn’t rely on fixed rules, yet you knew you had to solve the situation?
Everyone who works with people knows that they have to approach them individually. For example, when we have a 10-minute break during a shift to take care of our physiological needs, the coordinator rotates the team members so that they can take it. However, this time may not be sufficient for certain employees due to health reasons or because they can’t at the moment. As the boss, you have to evaluate the situation correctly and respect it. ED

Digital Machine Monitoring
Condition monitoring is an idea that has already proved itself effective in several operations
imple things are beautiful. And using an already implemented and proven idea is one such simple solution. Copying an already successful process saves time and money, and thanks to the sharing of experiences among the individual teams, it supports cooperation at the car manufacturer. ŠKODA AUTO recently decided to support similar activities and make them visible – for example, through the Best Digital Copy Award competition, which seeks the best examples of re-using already implemented digitisation projects.
In the first year, the Condition Monitoring project won. It currently helps to streamline production in the PKM – Engine EA 211 department. The Thingworks platform has recently been deployed on the line and enables online machine conditioning and production monitoring. “The parameters are evaluated in real time, and when the set limits are exceeded, an order is automatically entered into the Mobile Maintenance Application system. Based on the orders created in this way, the equipment is subsequently inspected by maintenance, thus eliminating any unscheduled production downtime,” says Jan Ecler from the PK/1 – MGMT Control Systems Component Production department. According to him, the benefits include not only the automatic reporting of any deviations from the desired states but also the user environment, which has clear visualisations of various data. “We can clearly see the current state of the machines, as well as the number of manufactured parts for a given operation, for example. Upon clicking, the details are displayed, including the graphical display of its cycle and list of faults for a given period. Thanks to this information, the foremen can react more quickly to any potential line issues and re-organise the production flow to minimise any potential losses”, adds a colleague from the PKM department, Michal Krejčí.
The visualisation includes an alarm database, which helps in the retrospective fault analysis. It also makes it possible to identify the reasons behind the faults in more detail and set up measures that will prevent such undesirable conditions from happening again. Thanks to this, the project features a very quick return on investment and is a suitable candidate for further sharing or deployment in other ŠKODA AUTO operations. At the same time, it represents a high degree of digitisation because, among others, it removes paper forms, automates data collection and analysis and enables both digital diagnostics and prevention. Different Ways of Working
Interview with Pavel Hlaváč, currently Head of the SP – Human Resources Planning department, who retired on May 31 after four decades
How has the area of Human Resources Management changed during your time at ŠKODA AUTO?
There are differences, of course. First, there was the era without personal computers, but I was lucky, and one of the first ones was in my office. After that, the first SAP systems were introduced. Working with data made our planning easier for us, and it has remained so to this day. The more information and processed data we have, the more effectively we can manage our tasks. However, the carmaker has made the most progress in internationalisation. Our 50 nationalities in various job positions represent a great scope not only for human resources. Speed, flexibility and decision-making in negotiations with the KOVO Trade Union are at a completely different level. We can jointly and immediately respond to the company’s needs.
ŠKODA AUTO celebrates 30 years since its merger with the VW Group. What are the most significant changes it has brought from your point of view?
We are a strong company in the European environment. Therefore, we must also support our employees abroad, during their business trips and when they return home. It was very important not to wait for what the labour market would bring. Our staff are highly qualified thanks to our support of the vocational school and other schools. A separate chapter was the establishment of our ŠKODA AUTO University and the transfer of corporate education to its higher level of quality. The demands for our employees’ skills have changed very quickly; however, luckily, we were often able to rely on the VW Group’s experiences.
What do you think the carmaker should focus on in its HR area in the coming years in order to maintain its competitiveness?
It is certainly not common for someone to stay in a similar position for as long as I have. There will still be a great fight for talent and experts in all the jobs. If we get them, we have to keep and motivate them. Not only our remuneration system, but also work–life balance will play a role in this regard in the future. We should evaluate the situation in the time of COVID-19 as well, since one of the greatest challenges for the future will be to deal with different ways of doing work.
What would be your message to the ŠKODA employees?
I wish all employees could experience the same successful years with the ŠKODA brand as I’ve had the honour to have. ED
Sales and Marketing
Sales and Marketing
Customer Orientation is Key
The V – Sales and Marketing area has undergone major structural changes since 1 June
New structure in the V area
Unchanged departments:
VV Sales Management, VT Sales and Marketing CZ
Sales Europe
It focuses on traditional European markets, as well as Israel, where the ŠKODA brand is already established.
Sales International
It operates worldwide and is seeking new opportunities in other markets as well.
After Sales
In the new structure, it has strengthened its role as a pillar for direct interaction with dealers and customers.
Customer Journey
The brand-new department’s goal is to increase customer satisfaction and combine all the digital processes and data use.
Marketing
It will focus exclusively on unified communication in the area of sales and services.
Product Marketing
Product planning, which used to fall under VM, is now covered by a separate department.
ŠKODA DigiLab
It will cover the activities of the Innovation Centre, which, among other things, is seeking out new technologies.
Project Management Office GigaFactory
It is primarily responsible for the placement of the giant battery factory in the Czech Republic.
he automotive industry is changing, and so are car sales and associated services. This means new challenges for ŠKODA AUTO, and to cope with them, the structure of the V – Sales and Marketing area is tied to a significant change in the agreement with the KOVO Trade Union. “Their goal is also to effectively implement the new NEXT LEVEL ŠKODA strategy with a focus on developing new markets and business models and transforming the automotive industry”, explains Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing (you can read his thoughts on the new trends in the “New car in a few clicks” interview). Restructuring will not reduce the number of job positions – quite the opposite: The goal is to increase synergies and improve the use of human and financial resources.
The changes take effect on 1 June and apply to most departments in the V area. The restructuring includes a more effective division of the sales regions into two main areas: traditional European markets (VE) and growing international markets (VI). We will pay more attention to this division in the next issue of ŠKODA Mobil. In the new structure, the position of the VA – After Sales department is changing. It includes the Customer Centre, ŠKODA Service Centre in Kosmonosy, Customer Care and the newly created Training Academy in Kosmonosy. This will allow a strong integration of sales and after-sales training, as well as better use of the available synergies in all the service areas. The VM – Marketing department also underwent a transformation, and a separate VP – Product Marketing department has emerged. The former VP – Production Marketing department has been separated from it, and its goal is product planning. However, completely new departments are being created as well. First and foremost, VX – Customer Journey takes over some of the roles and teams of the original VB, VC and GG departments. Its task is to fine-tune the digital processes and use of data so that the customers’ path to products is as simple and pleasant as possible. The VD – ŠKODA DigiLab organisational unit covers the activities of the carmaker’s innovation centre represented in the Czech Republic, Israel, China and India. In addition to scouting new technologies, it handles the development and operation of the mobility services, such as car sharing, and future business with regular customers and corporate clients.
The brand-new VG – Project Management Office GigaFactory is responsible for the placement of the giant VW battery cell factory in the Czech Republic (GigaFactory Ost) together with the SR – External Affairs department. It is also responsible for coordinating the Electrification of Central and Eastern Europe strategic transformation initiative in which it will participate with SR, VE, VT and other internal and external partners within the framework of Strategy 2030. How to please the customer
Seamless Customer Journey
This approach may be translated as a seamless customer journey. It is about enabling the client to purchase a product or service in the simplest and shortest way possible. The customer basically has to enjoy not only the product but also the way there.
Human Touch
This is ŠKODA AUTO’s long-term philosophy. Its core is the personal approach to every customer who must perceive friendly and positive behaviour, maximum support and competence in their communication with the carmaker’s employees or dealers.

New car in a few clicks
Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing, describes the future of car sales
What made the carmaker restructure its V – Sales and Marketing area?
This is the result of ŠKODA AUTO’s efforts to be even more customer-oriented in line with the Human Touch principle. The principle forms part of the complete Customer Journey and introduction of our Simply Clever solutions into the main areas of our new activities: electromobility, connectivity and digitisation.
Has the pandemic situation accelerated the onset of online car sales?
It has, but it is also something that has been talked about for 10 to 15 years. The common denominator is a lot of pressure to reduce our distribution costs and also the advent of a generation that is new and does more things in a virtual environment. They buy everything online, from books to clothes, so they will tend to buy a car online as well. And they expect to be able to buy it in five clicks. By around 2025, in my opinion, about 25 percent of our sales could take place online in certain markets.
More and more car functions will be controlled from one’s mobile phone. Our long-term vision is to have everything in a single app.
Can a virtual environment replace meeting a dealer and exploring a car in person?
We have to offer everything the customer is used to. That is, virtual reality and a chatbot that communicates with the customer or connects them to our dealership’s representative. In this way, the customer can experience a lot of things online with our product. Today, our configurator is very user-friendly and familiarises the customer with what the car is doing or compares market offers. After seeing the options and deciding what one wants, it is possible to configure the car and pay online.
Do the dealers lose their position in such a system?
Certainly not. We will still need them. We need to have someone hand over the car to the customer and arrange for a test drive, even if they order it online. And even if part of our service, such as a software update, ultimately goes wireless, there are still plenty of things left to be done by the dealer.
What new services can we expect from ŠKODA AUTO in the future?
Very soon, we will introduce our services, such as the delivery of goods to one’s car boot, which already operates in the Czech Republic. Another one is location-based services (services based on the user’s location – ed.), where we inform the customer in their car about a specific offer of goods. This will be followed by the use of driving data, road quality and traffic monitoring, providing insurance tailored to the driver and his car and more. I expect the expansion of gamification in our cars, for example, in the form of adapting the appearance of displays to the driver’s taste. ED

WHAT'S NEXT FOR US
The employee satisfaction survey for the Year of 2020 has entered its final phase
he way in which the coronavirus epidemic has limited the work and personal lives of the carmaker's employees has naturally been reflected in the employee satisfaction survey. The deadline for discussing the results and developing measures has therefore been extended until the end of May. The final phase of the implementation and review of measures is currently underway and must be concluded by the end of the year. All teams have jointly developed nearly five hundred measures and will now continuously deploy them and review their contribution. It remains the case that if you cannot manage the deployment by yourself, you can ask for support in the application for a solution or mark a measure as not deployable (not feasible). Until the end of the year, supervisors can discuss their not-yet-deployed measures with colleagues as part of the regular measure discussions. The aim is to bring all measures to a successful conclusion. In the autumn, everyone will then have another survey in which they will give feedback to the car company on the past 12 months and evaluate various aspects of working life. ED

Non-Smoking ŠKODA AUTO
ŠKODA AUTO and the KOVO Trade Union plan to introduce a smoking ban in all areas and operations
modern and, above all, healthy company: This is the concept that the carmaker and its social partner, the KOVO Trade Union, have jointly developed to further increase the employer’s social responsibility. This activity includes a wide range of preventive measures to protect employees’ health. The measures applied during the coronavirus pandemic, which include a ban on smoking in all the areas of the carmaker, laid the groundwork for a new idea: to make ŠKODA AUTO a non-smoking company. With this step, the carmaker promises to create an environment that will be friendly to all of its employees, featuring mutual respect and trust. “Our main priority is to protect our employees’ health as much as possible. Our measures against COVID-19 form an excellent basis, and we are now building on it. The next logical step is, therefore, to make ŠKODA AUTO a non-smoking company”, says Maren Gräf, Board Member for Human Resources Management.
ŠKODA AUTO’s management team sees a new standard behind the ban on smoking in the form of a non-smoking company, thanks to which it will join numerous other facilities that are already non-smoking: from restaurants and public transport stops to sports grounds and cultural facilities. The tobacco-free regime has also been adopted by our colleagues at ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited. ED

Did you know that...
… with one pack of the cheapest cigarettes smoked every day, the ordinary smoker spends around CZK 2,500 a month? It is CZK 30,000 a year, which represents a nice holiday by the sea for two or a language course for children. If you have been smoking in this way for 30 years, this vice may have cost you as much as CZK 1.7 million! What’s more, if you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, that means smoking will take up around four years of your life.
Thomas Schäfer
Chairman of the Board
With this step, we wish to motivate our employees to have a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. Our goal is, of course, also to remove any barriers between smokers and non-smokers and reduce the amount of waste that smoking generates. Thus, we will contribute to protecting the environment.
Marek Jancák
Head of PF – Car Production
Our company and its social partner are using considerable resources to protect our employees’ health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this effort was the greatest in our company’s history. It would be indefensible to invest a single Czech crown to support damaging our health – for example, by building and maintaining any smoking areas. Such an approach would certainly be unfair to our non-smoking employees, who do not get any exclusive facilities.
Štěpán Lacina
Head of SP – Human Resources Planning
A number of measures applied during the coronavirus pandemic, which we set up together with the KOVO Trade Union, have worked out so successfully that they have shown us how everything could work in the future. I’m pleased that one of these trends is a non-smoking company, because it is normal not to smoke.
Green Future
ENYAQ iV with a Carbon-Neutral Balance
When using electricity from renewable sources, drivers of new electric cars can drive completely “green”
he new ENYAQ iV is not only emission-free on the road at the local level: ŠKODA AUTO also supplies it to customers with a carbon-neutral production emission balance. This is possible thanks to a number of measures. Which ones are they?
Production process optimisation
The carmaker is constantly innovating its operation and production processes. The Vrchlabí plant is the first at ŠKODA AUTO to use all its energy for production from carbon-neutral sources since the end of 2020. In this decade, some of the carmaker’s other facilities in the Czech Republic will join it. The brand’s logistics have also, for example, developed the OPTIKON application, which uses artificial intelligence to ensure the ideal use of space in containers. In the first half of 2020 alone, 151 container transports and, thus, 80 tonnes of CO2 emissions were prevented.
ENYAQ iV is produced in the main plant in Mladá Boleslav where the carmaker, in cooperation with ČEZ, is building the largest photovoltaic roof system in the Czech Republic.
Monitoring of CO2 emissions in the supply chain
ŠKODA AUTO ensures that CO2 emissions in the supply chain, the entire production process and logistics are reduced proportionately – also by using electricity from renewable sources – or completely prevented. For example, LG guarantees the use of electricity from renewable sources in the production of batteries for ENYAQ iV. Many other partners also guarantee environmentally friendly production processes. The calculation of the remaining CO2 emissions is based on the specific environmental balance of the ENYAQ iV, which is certified by TÜV NORD CERT. It also verifies the ongoing emissions that are associated with it. On the certificates, it confirms the correctness of the registration of all the CO2 emissions within the entire life cycle and classification of the ENYAQ iV model as a product with a neutral CO2 balance when it is delivered to customers.
Car and battery recycling
CO2 emissions during the life cycle also include car recycling. First, the drive batteries get a “second life” in ŠKODA iV smart energy storage devices. Next, they are recycled and the used raw materials are further used. CO2 emissions from car recycling are considered in the balance.
Emission compensation through certified projects
A certain share of CO2 emissions arising from the production (suppliers and production) of the ENYAQ iV model cannot be avoided yet. The carmaker compensates for them by purchasing certified carbon credits, which it does by supporting climate protection projects, such as the construction of a large wind farm in Tamil Nadu in southern India. The total capacity of hundreds of wind turbines will reach 200 MW and provide clean energy to 600,000 households. ED
Sugar Beet Patent
The carmaker uses ecological materials in its car production and is investigating the use of new natural raw materials
nnovative and sustainable materials with a portion of crushed sugar beet coloured in accordance with the procedure developed by ŠKODA AUTO can also be used for fillings and certain design elements in the car’s interior. But it is not necessary to transport it from far away; the carmaker obtains organic raw material from Dobrovice near Mladá Boleslav, where it is created as a by-product in sugar production and has not yet had any technical use. The material processed in this way has already been patented by the Technical Development department, together with the Technical University of Liberec. Technical Development is also working on another material – this time, using silvergrass. Its fibres can be processed and used, for example, in the manufacturing of door linings.
70 %
of the seat upholstery in the ENYAQ iV with the Lodge interior consists of polyester from recycled PET bottles; the rest is from certified natural wool.
The carmaker already uses a number of sustainable materials in production; however, it intends to go even further. “We want to be sustainability pioneers. For us, this means much more than just reducing the CO2 emissions of our model range. That is why we prefer ecologically produced materials. For example, we’re currently exploring how to make greater use of waste products, such as coffee grounds, coconut fibre and rice husks”, adds Johannes Neft, Board Member for Technical Development. The use of sustainable materials significantly reduces our carbon footprint, especially if they come from renewable sources near production plants. Organic production waste that can be recycled without the need for other materials is ideal and reduces the need for industrially produced primary materials. ED

„Takto vytištěná součást dosahuje pevnosti slitiny hliníku, přitom má řádově nižší hmotnost a její výroba je oproti konvenčním metodám, například kompletně obráběnému dílu, méně nákladná,“ vyzdvihuje P. Pánek. Při stejné pevnosti je navíc díky nově navržené struktuře pravděpodobnost opakovaného selhání mnohem menší.

Ročník 2023
Launching a new era in India
Four metres is a critical threshold in the Indian automobile market and its segment with this maximum length accounts for nearly 30%. Škoda Auto is entering this segment with the new compact SUV, the Kylaq, which is developed and manufactured in India specifically to cater to the preferences of local customers. This launch follows the earlier introductions of the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan.
Conquering the French market
More than half a million visitors flocked to the Paris Motor Show in October, where global carmakers were in attendance. The Škoda Auto stand featured the new electric Elroq, which garnered much attention. Other cars from Škoda’s portfolio were also on display, including a specially modified fourth-generation Superb for the Tour de France race director and the Fabia RS Rally2 competition special.
Reducing software complexity
The second of the Brand Group Core’s six strategic packages is titled Reducing Complexity and focuses primarily on software. The increasing number of drives and assistance systems and the integration of other vehicle functions have led to a complex array of software variants. The aim of reducing the number of software variants is to decrease costs and enhance cybersecurity.
A look inside the battery
The new tomography centre in Hall M6 allows for non-destructive testing of the quality of MEB’s electric platform batteries. Škoda Auto inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility in June this year, and there may not be another facility like it in any other carmaker. Historically, the industry has employed computed tomography technology, or CT scanning, mainly for smaller parts.
Pohled do útrob baterie
Kompaktní, a tedy i dostupnější elektrické SUV značky Škoda.
Elroq loaded with news
On October 1st, the Elroq made its world premiere in Prague. A compact and more affordable electric SUV from Škoda, this latest addition to the carmaker's model range impresses not only with its innovative features and solutions but also with its appearance showcasing the new Modern Solid design language. This language is characterised by functionality, durability and the use of sustainable materials.
Indian student car
Following the model of the Mladá Boleslav apprenticeship, students in India also built their own car. The result is an innovative pickup truck created by combining two Volkswagen models produced under the Škoda Auto banner at the Indian plant in Pune – Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan. The students had access to the latest technology, including 3D printing, which they used to produce the necessary parts.
FORCEd to peak
The Production and Logistics area is implementing a new production strategy. Škoda Auto will now ensure that the development of new vehicles considers efficient production requirements from the start. The aim is to reduce complexity, enhance automation, increase modularity and develop sustainable plants with optimal business results. All of these elements are crucial to Škoda Auto's future success.
Conference for female managers
Supporting women in leadership positions is a key component of Škoda Auto's diversity strategy. In line with this, the carmaker, in cooperation with McKinsey & Company, organised the Women Management Summit. The event focused on trends in the automotive industry, the importance of employees during transformation periods and leadership styles that foster an inclusive and equitable work environment.
Výrobní strategie peak
Oblast Výroby a logistiky zavádí novou výrobní strategii peak.
