Both models offer four interior options.
Kamiq and Scala undergo thorough modernisation
Two of Škoda’s successful compact models have received various improvements, notably in the areas of safety, sustainable materials and connectivity. Designers have also revamped the cars’ looks. The Scala now boasts an even more dynamic appearance thanks to a redesigned radiator grille, narrower headlights and updated front and rear bumpers. Meanwhile, the Kamiq features a larger, more upright grille and fresh bumpers with distinctive diffusers. Both cars are equipped with fuel-efficient, modern, evo2‑generation TSI engines with outputs from 70 kW to 110 kW. New features include optional Matrix‑LED headlights and the virtual pedal in conjunction with the electrically operated fifth door. Customers are also served by a new menu structure that brings, among other things, interiors reminiscent of the Enyaq. There are three trim levels: Selection, Top Selection and the sporty Monte Carlo. In addition, they debut in the Czech market with an attractive First Edition version that has exclusive equipment.

Area F has a new name
Holger Peters, the newly appointed Board Member for Area F, has initiated the renaming of the division to Finance, IT and Legal affairs. This change, effective from 1 August, aims to give all colleagues in this area a stronger sense of identity while aligning more closely with common industry practices. The renaming was also endorsed by the KOVO Trade Union.
Fifth time at the Handy Cycling Marathon
The Škoda WeLoveCycling.cz team was also present at this year’s July Metrostav Handy Cycling Marathon, which brought together able-bodied and disabled cyclists. The eight-member teams had to cover 2,222 km across the Czech Republic within a 111-hour limit. With a time of 77 hours and 27 minutes, the team reached third place.
Film camp for children and youth
In July, for the sixth time, children of Škoda Auto employees had the opportunity to attend a film day camp at the Na Karmeli Educational Centre. This camp was organised by the Zlín Film Festival in cooperation with the carmaker. A total of 25 children took part in various cinema-related activities, trying out film tricks using green screen, virtual reality and stop-motion animation using materials like plasticine and Legos. The day camp will take place again next year, and registrations will once again be facilitated through Škoda Space.
Škoda Auto’s internal notification system
On 1 August, the Whistleblower Protection Act came into force in the Czech Republic. Its main purpose is to protect whistleblowers from retaliation linked to the reporting of potential misconduct and to lay out rules for receiving and handling such reports. For several years, Škoda Auto employees have been able to report suspected violations of legal or internal regulations through the VW Group’s Central Whistleblowing System. Since 1 August, the Škoda Auto Internal Whistleblowing System allows notifications under the Act to be submitted to relevant persons within the carmaker. Further details can be found on Škoda Space.
Škoda Auto sent seven historic cars to the 20th Sachsen Classic. One of the most admired models on the 544 km long route through Germany and the Czech Republic was the classic Felicia convertible.
New multifunctional lines in Hall M13
Škoda Auto has invested in test facilities designed for both combustion and electric vehicles in the newly expanded Hall M13 at the Mladá Boleslav plant. In July, the company unveiled three modernised multifunctional lines in this hall. These lines permit adjustments to chassis geometry and enable the testing of brakes and engine parameters at the end of the assembly. During final inspections, Hall M13 manages to test 1,360 Enyaq and Octavia cars each day. This modernisation was necessitated by increasing software requirements, aligned with new UNECE regulations (for more information, see the April 2023 issue of Škoda Mobil).
New locker rooms offer greater comfort
Employees working in Hall M14 were happy to receive new locker rooms, which were inaugurated on 8 August. They are now closer to the workplaces of the employees, who have 928 lockers in them, and a new feature is underfloor heating in the bathrooms. Work on the project took place from December last year to the end of June this year but without disrupting the logistics operations or kiosk supplies. Located above the logistics area, the locker rooms do not take up any new space. Their construction has freed up space on the second aboveground floor of building C24, where a digital control room will be located to enhance production management efficiency.

Škoda marks 20th appearance at Tour de France
The Škoda brand is everywhere you look, and this ubiquity defined the world’s most prestigious cycling race this year. Beyond showcasing its cars, the carmaker also unveiled its new corporate identity. Among others, the jersey worn by the cyclist leading the points classification received a complete makeover.
This marked the 20th year in which Škoda Auto cooperated as the official partner of the Tour de France. However, while the director’s car was once again a specially modified Enyaq Sportline, a lot has changed in other respects. At the Tour, the carmaker presented its new corporate identity, featuring a modernised logo and new corporate colours, for the first time. This overhaul meant a complete change of all the visual elements along the route, including banners, inflatable gates and more. Particularly noteworthy was the introduction of a brand-new green jersey for the leading cyclist in the spurt competition, predominantly designed in emerald green with electric green detailing.
The tradition of creating trophies for the overall champion and sprint winners continued for the 13th year. Designed by the ED – Škoda Design team and manufactured by Lasvit in Nový Bor, these crystal glass trophies stand 60 cm tall and weigh 4 kg each. They have a unique appearance every year due to varying cutting techniques.
Similarly to last year, the men’s three-week race was followed by an eight-stage women’s race, which has been gaining considerable prestige and viewership. The Škoda brand continued its support by providing cars for the organisers, as well as the green jersey and the trophy for the winner of the points classification. “This race is really growing in importance and is catching up with the men’s version. Top-notch performances are showcased there, and our partnership presents us with significant opportunities,” noted Martin Hampl from the VME – Brand Experience department, responsible for managing the visibility of the Škoda brand at the Tour and the facilities for the carmaker’s guests.

Masked escort
The conclusion of the Tour de France traditionally involved a mass spurt on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Škoda Auto used the closely watched race part to lure customers to the upcoming fourth-generation Superb Combi. Two cars in special camouflage, which featured a map motif reflecting the spirit of discovery associated with the Škoda brand and the essence of the Tour de France, joined the peloton. Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, also joined in Paris, cycling alongside former racer Andy Schleck, who experienced the new Superb Combi from behind the wheel as well.
Connecting to the digital world
This year’s Tour de France has received substantial attention, thanks in part to the success of the Netflix documentary series “Tour de France: No Frills”. This series explores the stories and goes behind the scenes of the previous year’s event. “For us, it translated into significant publicity. Our cars and brand were very visible at no cost to us,” states Hampl. In addition, the filmmakers maintained their presence at this year’s race, and a second series is slated for next year.
Digital support was provided by the WeLoveCycling platform, which oversaw the creation of the official race app. Its Strava app challenge for active cyclists was also a great success. WeLoveCycling has now become an integral part of the Škodaverse virtual landscape. Social networks are also very important. The women’s race received vigorous backing on the English version of WeLoveCycling channels from Polish racer and Škoda brand ambassador Kasia Niewiadoma, who secured a third-place overall finish and won the women’s summit finish.
This year’s big challenge was the transformation of Škoda Auto’s corporate identity. Last year, we already started a collaboration to develop a new jersey, followed by several rounds of design and testing. The comprehensive new visual style of all the other elements was subsequently tested at the Paris–Nice race. Tweaks were made based on this testing to enhance the prominence of the two new colours.

Shift starts after the stage ends
Since Škoda Auto became the official car supplier for the Tour de France, Radovan Beran, Service Competency Centre Officer from the VAC/4 V – Maintenance and Warranty Repairs department, has also been participating in the race. He oversees a team of five mechanics, two tinsmiths and one painter who are responsible for maintaining the Škoda and Volkswagen cars used by the organising team throughout the race. The team is also supported by two spare parts truck drivers and a French interpreter. “This year, we had to care for around 250 to 260 organisers’ cars. In addition, we occasionally assist the participating teams who also use our cars to some extent,” R. Beran explains.
Priority given to the director’s car
Despite attending the Tour de France for the 20th time this year, he cannot fully enjoy the exciting cycling events. His team always relocates to the stage finish after the start. There, they set up their facilities and prepare to work once the cyclists, and particularly the support cars, reach the finish line. Mostly, they handle the aftermath of minor accidents that occur during the race. “Our cars must not be driven if they have been bumped or scratched, so we address issues like replacing sheet metal or repainting, especially on rest days. Priority is given to the red director’s car, followed by the cars for VIP guests,” R. Beran elaborates. Other common repairs include changing wheels or windscreens, especially when the stage includes sections on gravel.
The service team cannot rest even after the peloton crosses the finish line on the Champs-Élysées, as some of the cars are headed directly to Spain for La Vuelta, which starts at the end of August. Therefore, they need to ensure these cars are in perfect condition.

Interview
I had a great time at Škoda Auto
After 13 years, Michael Oeljeklaus is stepping down from his role as Board Member for Production and Logistics. In this interview, he reflects on this period of his life and describes the relationship he has built with the Škoda brand and the Czech Republic.
You have been on the Škoda Auto Board of Directors since 2010. What do your years spent at the carmaker mean to you?
It was the best period of my life, both professionally and privately. I met my wife at Škoda Auto, the company’s cars improved, and we experienced more and more success with them over the years. In 2010, people were buying Škoda cars because they were cheap and good; today, they drive Škoda cars because they want to drive them. The key moment for me was the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, where we presented the Vision D study. It was a game-changer that set the brand on the road to success.
Would you summarise for us how this period was specific for the carmaker from your point of view?
During that time, we virtually doubled our production volumes, increased our car production capacity in the country by a third and doubled our component production capacity. So I can say that it was a really successful period during which we had 80 new model launches globally, including facelifts. In the area of electric mobility, we managed to convince VW to build the Enyaq not in Germany but in Mladá Boleslav. Similarly, we have been successful with components, such as batteries for PHEVs and eventually for the MEB platform. In addition, we have a third electric car on the horizon, the Elroq, which we will also manufacture here.
So you have seen a huge ramp-up in production and SUV or EV model offensives. Which of these has been the most challenging to manage?
The biggest challenge has been the software. Škoda Auto knows exactly how to produce very high-quality and precisely crafted cars. However, what was new for us was their network connection, which brought a lot of problems in the beginning. We have overcome those, but the launch of an electric car is always a big challenge.
You have also had five chairmen of the board during your time...
I must say I am grateful for the trust all of them put in me. No one tried to interfere in my area. Moreover, it is very successful, and we are in a good position inside the carmaker and in the VW Group, and we are meeting our indicators and targets – even exceeding them. And we deliver very good products to the market. In addition, I have a very good team of professionals around me, which I have gradually built up.
Which milestones that have transformed the Production and Logistics area at Škoda Auto would you highlight?
The most important topic is innovation. For example, we were the first to hold an Innovation Day in the field of Production and Logistics. We keep organising them, and I measure the management in my area by how innovative it is, how many patents it is handing in and what new technologies we have. When I joined Škoda Auto, we had maybe three FTS trucks (Fahrerlose Transportsysteme, or self-driving transport system – ed.); now we have 300. I could cite various similar examples. Innovation is the alpha and omega. I am also very proud of the Force Program, which we developed together with our top management. It has been running successfully for four years now and is constantly evolving according to our current needs. So far, it has delivered savings in the hundreds of millions of euros. It is the simplest, most robust and most successful programme I have implemented at various locations in similar versions.
At the same time, however, you have had to deal with various crises recently. From the COVID-19 pandemic to the semiconductor shortage to the problems caused by the war in Ukraine. Which moments were the most difficult for you?
The COVID-19 pandemic was probably the biggest challenge of my entire professional life, much as it was for everyone. In 2020, from mid-March to the end of April, we produced nothing at all. The plants were empty. It was a completely new situation for all of us. We dealt with crisis management on a daily basis, but thanks to the excellent cooperation of all areas and our social partner KOVO, we managed to keep the plant running, even when other problems came up. At one point, we had up to 60,000 incomplete cars in the lay-by areas due to a shortage of semiconductors. If you lined them up one behind the other, it would be about the distance between Prague and Berlin. From a logistical point of view, it was a huge challenge. From the beginning of 2020 until this year, we have been working basically around the clock in crisis management mode. And we managed it, which also proves the strength of Škoda Auto.
I had a great time at Škoda Auto. In 13 years, there has not been a single day I would not like to experience again.
How important has the cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union been for you all along?
In those 13 years, I have never once seen the union fight unilaterally only for the workers. Its president, Jaroslav Povšík, who has become my friend, has enormous knowledge and strategic thinking. Even when we had difficult discussions, under his leadership, the union always fought for Škoda Auto and for securing jobs. Without cooperation with the union, we would not have produced so many cars over the years. Their flexibility and cooperation have always been very beneficial.
What do you think is the future of Škoda Auto?
It comes with a big challenge: Electromobility will require a lot of commitment. However, I am sure that if everything goes as it has in recent decades, with purpose, clear determination and energy, the carmaker will manage the transformation.
How important is cooperation with universities? After all, you have strong ties in the Czech academic environment, having completed your doctoral studies at the Technical University of Liberec.
I already know this from a German perspective. There, universities cooperate a lot with industry, and both sides benefit from it. When I came to the Czech Republic, I found that higher education was closed and had little direct contact with industry. I changed that, and we have deepened our cooperation enormously. The closest to me, of course, is the Technical University of Liberec and its Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. I had a challenging four and a half years of study there, and I am proud that I completed it. My Ph.D. thesis in mechanical engineering even resulted in two European patents.
You also initiated the Azubi Car (pupil car) project. What prompted you to do this?
I thought that since we have our own apprenticeship, the pupils there could build their own car. Not only to improve the current car but also to create a completely new concept based on it. I am absolutely thrilled with the impact of the 12-month project on the students. Initially shy pupils develop into confident young people in 12 months. In the beginning, they were unable to speak in front of me, but by the end, they confidently presented their car. I hope my successor will continue this tradition.
I do not want to say that I have become Czech, but a small part of me is more Czech than German now. And that is one of the reasons we will stay on here.
Proof of your strong relationship with the Škoda brand is the Classic Tour rally, a tradition you also founded.
There is a story behind that, too. I think I did my first Sachsen Classic rally in 2014. My co‑driver, Peik von Bestenbostel, who was then Head of Communications at Škoda Auto, and I had a lot of fun. And I thought to myself that since I have a vintage Felicia in my garage, many other employees would surely have their own vintage cars, and it would be nice to organise a race together. We had about 60 cars on the first Škoda Classic Tour later that year, and we drove through the Bohemian Paradise in the most beautiful weather possible. The event had a very good response, and eventually, it became the biggest oldtimer rally in the Czech Republic; in fact, probably one of the largest in Europe. In addition, we managed to realise my other idea – to drive through the plant, even directly through the production halls, where each participant would get their own photo. There is nothing better than when enthusiastic employees come together in one day. It doesn’t matter where they are from or what position they hold. Everyone enjoys the day.
Do you have a favourite car that you have driven in the race?
Yes, it is one of the most beautiful Škoda cars ever made: the Popular Sport Monte Carlo. It is not easy to drive, but it is the car that evokes the strongest emotions in me.
What are your plans for the future?
My family and I have decided to stay in the Czech Republic. My hobby is flying, and I have several projects here, such as expanding the Aviation Museum. I would also like to spend more time travelling around this country, which is really beautiful. I feel at home here.
Is there anything you would like to say to the staff?
They are Škoda Auto’s biggest asset. Compared with other brands, they are more innovative and creative. For historical reasons, they have had far fewer resources in terms of technology, materials and finance. The ability to improvise, to make a lot out of little, distinguishes Škoda employees from those in other carmakers and countries. They are the ones who made Škoda Auto a great and successful company.

With an extension of at least 40 millimetres and an added height of 12 millimetres for the liftback variant, the new Superb is scheduled for its world premiere this November. This marks the unveiling of the fourth generation of the vehicle, arriving 90 years after the launch of the first model, whose contemporary successor has been produced by the carmaker since 2001.
The model, which Škoda Auto is developing together with the forthcoming new generation of the Volkswagen Passat, will be manufactured in Bratislava. Besides a fresh look and dimensions, it will also present customers with an entirely revamped interior concept, similar to the second-generation Kodiaq (read more on this in the August 2023 issue of Škoda Mobil). Notably, this concept incorporates the placement of the gear selector beneath the steering wheel, which gives the centre console a simple and clean look. Control is facilitated through a clever combination of manual elements and a digital touchscreen with a diagonal span of up to 12.9 inches.
While the exterior is still partly shrouded in mystery because of specialised camouflage, the headlights’ dynamic aesthetic will captivate attention. Hexagonal Bi‑LED Matrix‑LED modules are positioned at the front, complemented by a Crystallinium element reminiscent of coloured crystal glass. Meanwhile, the rear lights, which are now narrower, have a more distinctive three‑dimensional look.

Up to 10 airbags protect front- and rear-seat passengers.
Battery range of up to 100 km
The new version of the Superb will offer six powertrain options with petrol and diesel engines, along with a plug‑in hybrid variant. The latter will facilitate a battery‑powered range of more than 100 km. Demonstrating the model’s efficiency and eco‑friendliness, it marks the first-time inclusion of a mild‑hybrid unit. Across all variants, the DSG automatic transmission will be the sole equipment of choice.
A prototype of the new Superb was introduced to journalists alongside the new Kodiaq in the French village of Crozet, near Lake Geneva. “One hundred of the top motoring journalists from 16 countries had the opportunity to test it. The cars, with varying specifications, boasted both exterior and interior camouflage, and journalists drove them in a convoy along regular roads. For us, this event brings not only huge publicity but also feedback on our products before they are launched,” explains Zdeněk Štěpánek, who is responsible for the Superb model in the GKP – Product Communications department.

The standard development process for a new model generation takes four years. All areas are represented in the core team and, due to the joint development with the Passat, also colleagues from Volkswagen. Naturally, the development also involves a multitude of other experts. What I would highlight about the new model is its plug‑in hybrid version, which affords you the ability to cover more than 100 km without consuming a single drop of petrol. The model also cleverly blends adjustable manual controls with digital interfaces.
Force Program

Force Program
India’s journey towards green sustainability
The Force Program underscores the importance of sustainable automotive production, including at plants in India. They have several new initiatives ranging from material cost savings to process optimization to rainwater harvesting at the plant for further internal use.
In the spirit of Next Level – Škoda Strategy 2030
Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has been following the objectives of the Force Program at its Indian plants for several years. Thanks to numerous measures, such as more efficient workforce collaboration, production plan optimisation, digitisation and the re-use of packaging material, the company saves millions of euros annually. This year, SAVWIPL is focusing on several new and exciting activities aimed at fostering a greener and more sustainable future.
Rainwater harvesting in Pune
“We used to consume approximately 890 m3 of fresh water daily. The introduction of rainwater harvesting has led to a significant shift. The factory has managed to reduce consumption per manufactured car from 3.3 to 2.9 m3, which represents an 8% reduction in municipal water usage. This will save up to 36,000 m3 of water a year,” explains Sumit Pethkar of PSI/2 – Industrial Engineering of Car Manufacturing in Pune.
An online system consistently monitors the quality of treated rainwater and stops its transfer for use in case of any deviations. “So far, all parameters have remained within acceptable limits, allowing us to continue supplying treated water to the network,” acknowledges S. Pethkar. During the rainy season, the system captures and treats 480 m3 of rainwater per day, with a constant supply of 600 m3. The process involves collecting rainwater in a collection tank and treating it through coagulation, filtration and oxidation. The treated water is then used in production processes, notably in the paint shop and cooling tower. The plant has already identified potential areas for expanding this innovative approach.
The Customer-Oriented Quality motto of the company also applies to the plants in Pune and Aurangabad.

Own paint testing room
The commitment to innovation, efficiency and sustainability also extends to paint testing. “Previously, we used to transport test samples from Pune to the laboratories in Mladá Boleslav, which took about a month, and there were additional delays for any retesting,” says S. Pethkar. However, the era of sending samples halfway around the world is now a thing of the past. They now have their own laboratory in Pune with a newly installed, locally manufactured environmental simulation chamber. “We’ve reduced testing time and are developing our own expertise to do so. This transition has led to a cost reduction of EUR 1,000 per sample. The new paint testing in our laboratory started in July, and we expect the first results in September,” adds S. Pethkar.

Approximate Euro savings in 2022 in India due to the Force Program and innovations in manufacturing.
Simplify the complex
In line with the company-wide Next Level – Škoda Strategy 2030, our colleagues in India are focusing on a third area. “Our teams are striving to be innovative and devising ways to be more efficient and sustainable for the customer. These may seem like small things, but the result is annual savings of EUR 0.48 million (over CZK 11.5 million),” explains S. Pethkar. Specifically, it is about optimising production processes, reducing the volume of multiple works on the basis of quality improvement and optimising activities within control points. For example, using a different type of sealant in the body shop resulted in a saving of EUR 4 per car. “We’ve also optimised the use of certain parts – for cars with aluminium rims, we’ve removed the hook for pulling the plastic wheel covers from the tool kit. Similarly, in response to customer feedback, we’ve stopped installing rubber cords in the pockets of the front door panels. Although the individual savings are modest (51 cents per car), overall and in the long run, we will save a lot of money,” concludes S. Pethkar.

Prague Pride for the second time
The carmaker, along with its employees, once again actively supported the rainbow festival of LGBT+ individuals.
This marks the second year that Škoda Auto has lent its support to the Prague Pride Festival, an event that celebrates diversity and focuses on the concerns and needs of the LGBT+ community through a wide array of events and an extensive cultural programme. “The Prague Pride Festival is a major event in the field of diversity and inclusion and provides a vibrant and positive platform to showcase Škoda Auto’s values. Promoting these values within our company inherently makes us a better employer,” said Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO. Zellmer also extended his support for the event on his LinkedIn account.

One of the highlights was a rainbow parade featuring numerous Škoda employees, including members of the Škoda Proud employee group and the distinctive Škoda Enyaq Coupé Respectline, an all-electric vehicle.
Prague Pride is not just a parade or a carnival; at its core, it is a demonstration advocating for human rights, equal conditions and a remembrance of historical events that may not be common knowledge. Škoda Auto’s involvement shows respect for both current and potential employees, as well as their families and friends.

This year’s event centred on traditions and their impact on the lives of LGBT+ individuals. As an official partner of the festival, the carmaker reinforces its dedication to core values such as respect, equal opportunities and diversity, principles that it fosters throughout the company. Maren Gräf, Board Member for People and Culture, emphasised that “At Škoda, we collectively advocate for a working environment that thrives on mutual respect, trust, and understanding. The diversity of our workforce is our strength. People can only truly realise their full potential in a respectful and supportive environment. That’s why promoting diversity across all areas with many measures and initiatives is part of our cultural DNA. With our commitment to Prague Pride Festival, we are taking a clear stand against intolerance and discrimination.”

The leap to carbon neutrality
ŠKO-ENERGO embraces 100% biomass usage in heating plant
How the new heating plant will work
Construction is scheduled to start next year. The new heating plant is expected to become operational within three years, and the transition to processing wood chips and plant residue–derived pellets will pave the way for fully carbon-neutral energy production.
1 Reconstruction of the K80 and K90 boilers
2 Sorting plant
3 Shifting plant
4 Biomass unloading
5 Establishment of the new K20 boiler house
6 Biomass conveyor leading to boilers
7 Installation of a stationary fire extinguishing system
8 Expansion of siding
9 Installation of high-capacity silo
Škoda Auto is continuing its journey towards carbon neutrality. ŠKO-ENERGO, a subsidiary responsible for ensuring a comprehensive supply of energy to the carmaker and providing heat to Mladá Boleslav, is launching a key project to upgrade its heating plant by exclusively employing biomass. This conversion is slated to start in 2024.
Switching to processing wood chips and pellets derived from plant residues will result in fully carbon‑neutral energy production. With operations set to commence within three years, the upgraded heating plant will significantly contribute to fulfilling the environmental protection targets across the entire value chain, as outlined in the company-wide Next Level – Škoda Strategy 2030.
“At Škoda Auto and ŠKO‑ENERGO, our commitment to meeting our ambitious sustainability targets remains steadfast. The upcoming transformation represents the most extensive modernisation of our energy resources in 25 years. The scale of the endeavour, at an estimated cost of CZK 3.6 billion, ranks among the largest projects in the Czech Republic. More than 50% of the expenses will be subsidised by the Modernisation Fund of the State Environmental Fund of the Czech Republic. This underscores our capacity to achieve remarkable feats thanks to close cooperation with all our partners,” explains Michael Oeljeklaus, Board Member for Production and Logistics and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of ŠKO-ENERGO.
“While the existing heating plant already adheres to modern standards and uses progressive technologies, ŠKO-ENERGO’s strategy propels us towards a carbon-neutral energy production path. The modernisation of the heating plant on the premises of Škoda Auto is crucial to this plan. Both the production plant and households in Mladá Boleslav will benefit from an environmentally friendly heat source within three years of the start of construction,” adds Tomáš Kubín, ŠKO-ENERGO’s Managing Director.
The scope of the endeavour is among the most expansive in the Czech Republic, with an estimated project cost of CZK 3.6 billion.
Savings of up to 290,000 tonnes of CO2
As part of the heating plant’s modernisation, all boilers will solely use biomass as fuel, consisting of 70% wood chips and 30% phyto pellets – that is, pellets derived from plant residues. The biomass used will be certified in accordance with European and Czech legislation, with an emphasis on the sustainability of the entire supply chain. Once the transition to these environmentally conscious fuels is completed, annual carbon dioxide savings are projected to reach 290,000 tonnes.
Until now, the heating plant has operated by using a blend of coal and biomass. The proportion of the environmentally friendly component has been rising steadily since 2005, when ŠKO-ENERGO first started using biomass to shrink its carbon footprint. The share of renewable energy sources across Škoda Auto’s Czech production plants reached around 35% in 2022.

Plastic caps now ‘fixed’
Have you noticed the arrival of plastic bottles with a novel type of cap? This innovation has been introduced by one of the major soda manufacturers and distributors, and others will soon follow suit. These “fixed” bottle caps are altering the norm, but why are the caps no longer easily detachable?
The reason is the gradual implementation of European Union legislative measures aimed at enhancing sustainability. These regulations have multiple objectives, such as curbing littering and resource wastage, increasing the collection of sorted plastic waste and reducing the contamination of the environment with microplastics.
8,000,000
According to the site Samosebou.cz, at least 8 million tonnes of plastics inundate the oceans every year, which is roughly equivalent to a truckload of waste every minute.
New Czech legislation
Last August, the Czech Republic passed a prohibition on the production and sale of certain single-use plastics, thereby aligning national law with the European Directive governing single-use plastics, according to the Ministry of the Environment. Items like single-use plastic cups, cotton swabs, cutlery, plates, straws, stirrers, balloon sticks and food and beverage containers made of expanded polystyrene or oxo-degradable plastics (which decompose through chemical oxidation) are no longer permitted on the market.
The new legislative measures also extend to plastic (or composite) beverage containers up to 3 litres, which, as of July 2024, must have lids “firmly” attached to them. This measure aims to mitigate littering by ensuring caps are more likely to end up where they belong: in the plastic sorting bin.

Ročník 2023
Success in times of challenges
In mid-November, around 300 managers gathered at the Škoda Museum for a two-day meeting with the top management of the MMK. The opening session was addressed by Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, and Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union. The theme of transformation guided the entire event, which included seminars, discussions and updates from various areas of the carmaker.
Compact but still spacious
The Kylaq, Škoda’s latest and smallest model, was unveiled in November. Measuring less than 4 metres in length, it targets the popular Indian market segment, with prices starting from CZK 220,000. The Kylaq introduces the new Modern Solid design language to India, along with the largest boot in its class and a wide range of equipment focused on safety, including six airbags.
IVET 2024 Innovation Fair
The 8th edition of IVET showcased 36 innovation themes, underscoring Škoda Auto’s commitment to practical advancements. New was a section dedicated to the Indian market and contributions from Group colleagues. The event also featured the presentation of the Elroq. From Simply Clever solutions to technical breakthroughs, the fair continued the tradition of innovations designed with customers in mind.
Chronicle of 2024
In 2024, Škoda Auto continued to launch new models while modernising its bestsellers. The carmaker also adopted a new design language, opened the Laurin & Klement Kampus, supported numerous charitable and sustainable projects, achieved many successes and celebrated several important anniversaries. Discover the highlights from the past year in this year’s Chronicle.
Kronika roku 2024
V roce 2024 Škoda Auto pokračovala v uvádění nových modelů a také v modernizaci bestsellerů. Automobilka navíc přešla na nový designový jazyk Modern Solid, otevřela Laurin & Klement Kampus, podpořila nespočet dobročinných i udržitelných projektů, dosáhla mnoha úspěchů a oslavila několik významných výročí. To nejdůležitější z právě končícího roku se dočtete v letošní kronice.
Launching a new era in India
Four metres is a critical threshold in the Indian automobile market and its segment with this maximum length accounts for nearly 30%. Škoda Auto is entering this segment with the new compact SUV, the Kylaq, which is developed and manufactured in India specifically to cater to the preferences of local customers. This launch follows the earlier introductions of the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan.
Conquering the French market
More than half a million visitors flocked to the Paris Motor Show in October, where global carmakers were in attendance. The Škoda Auto stand featured the new electric Elroq, which garnered much attention. Other cars from Škoda’s portfolio were also on display, including a specially modified fourth-generation Superb for the Tour de France race director and the Fabia RS Rally2 competition special.
Reducing software complexity
The second of the Brand Group Core’s six strategic packages is titled Reducing Complexity and focuses primarily on software. The increasing number of drives and assistance systems and the integration of other vehicle functions have led to a complex array of software variants. The aim of reducing the number of software variants is to decrease costs and enhance cybersecurity.
A look inside the battery
The new tomography centre in Hall M6 allows for non-destructive testing of the quality of MEB’s electric platform batteries. Škoda Auto inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility in June this year, and there may not be another facility like it in any other carmaker. Historically, the industry has employed computed tomography technology, or CT scanning, mainly for smaller parts.
Pohled do útrob baterie
