    Happening at ŠKODA Auto

    Board of Directors changes completed

On 1 October, Christian Schenk became the new ŠKODA AUTO Board Member for Finance and IT. He replaced Klaus-Dieter Schürmann, who had held the post for five years and is scheduled to take on new responsibilities within the VW Group. The change completes the transformation of the Board of Directors team headed by its Chairman, Thomas Schäfer. Schenk was previously a member of the Board of Directors for Finance, IT and Legal Affairs at MAN Truck & Bus SE. Earlier, he had successively headed the Results and Financing and Overall Financial Planning departments in the VW Group and was also responsible for Controlling at the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. He has previously worked in various other roles at this company as well as at VW UK and Europcar.

    Letter to employees:

    We will overcome the crisis

The global semiconductor shortage, which has been exacerbated by new outbreaks of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia, has affected ŠKODA AUTO as well. The carmaker is keeping a large number of work-in-progress vehicles at a high cost. Therefore, it currently concentrates on completing and delivering them to its customers; however, this means a significant reduction or possibly even a complete halt in normal production until the end of this year. In this situation, the carmaker’s top priority remains the long-term security of jobs and appropriate level of compensation for its employees. Together with the KOVO Trade Union, ŠKODA AUTO’s management is convinced that the carmaker will overcome this crisis despite all the difficulties.

The full text of the letter can be found on ŠKODA Space.

    One million trees planted

The ŠKODA Trees grant programme marked a significant milestone, with the carmaker planting its 1 millionth tree on 20 October. It was a summer oak tree in Mladá Boleslav’s Three Emperors Park. The project has been running since 2007, and its principle is that for every car the carmaker delivers to its customers in the Czech Republic, the company will plant one seedling. The second million was started with maidenhair tree seedlings in the castle park in Vrchlabí and chestnut tree seedlings in Solnice near the Kvasiny plant.

    India 2.0

SLAVIA sedan enters the Indian market

The name of the second production model developed specifically to meet the needs of customers in India refers to the bicycles that Václav Laurin and Václav Klement produced. The compact sedan, which, like the KUSHAQ SUV, is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, will be unveiled by the carmaker later this year. Production of the SLAVIA will be 95 percent localised as well. So far, the car has been shown with its special camouflage that came out of a design competition. The winning design by Shreyas Karambelkar combines Indian motifs with the elements of Czech glasswork and cubism.

First ENYAQ iV heads to the museum

The collection of the National Technical Museum in Prague has been expanded by the first-ever all-electric SUV, built as part of pre-production in Mladá Boleslav. The ENYAQ iV complements the brand’s other milestones in the exhibition, including the VOITURETTE B, which was donated to the museum in 1935 by the co-founder of the carmaker, Václav Klement. “We’re aware of the historical significance of this new acquisition, the first ENYAQ iV ever produced.  In our exhibition, it nicely complements the classic products from Mladá Boleslav”, says Karel Ksandr, the museum’s general director.

    Support for eMobility development

    in the Czech Republic

On 11 October, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the VW Group met with the Minister of Trade and Industry and Transport Karel Havlíček to discuss the Czech automotive industry’s future in the field of electromobility. Along with Herbert Diess, the meeting was also attended by Thomas Schmall, VW Group Board Member for Technology, and Thomas Schäfer, Chairman of the Board of Management of ŠKODA AUTO. The meeting was followed by the signing of a joint conclusion between the Ministry of Transport, the state agencies for road, rail, and water transport, ČEZ and ŠKODA AUTO to set up several thousand charging points for electric vehicles in the country by 2025.

World awards for development and innovation

On 30 September, the carmaker received the COMPANYBEST 2020 award in Barcelona. Last November, it was presented by AUTOBEST, the biggest independent automotive jury. However, the ceremony was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The carmaker was recognised by expert journalists from 32 countries for its outstanding development in numerous markets or innovative production concepts. In addition to the dProduction at the Kvasiny plant, the jury also highlighted the parallel production of various car models based on the MQB (OCTAVIA and KAROQ) and MEB (ENYAQ iV) platforms on the joint production line in Mladá Boleslav.

    Victory for innovative legal solutions

The Corporate Lawyer of the Year 2021 award went to Lukáš Krejčí, Legal Coordinator at ŠKODA AUTO, from the FL – Legal Affairs department. The jury selected him as the winner in the Innovative Legal Solution category, highlighting his activities in the area of digitising the legal agenda, such as the deployment of the ELO – Contract Management app and the chatbot. Krejčí has been working in the automotive industry for 18 years and is mainly involved in legal support in international projects, logistics, data issues and IT with a focus on modern technology solutions.

    Azubi Car

The eighth pupil car is coming

The first sketches indicate the appearance of the next student Azubi Car, whose preparations have begun with the new school year. It is being worked on by 25 pupils from the ŠKODA AUTO Vocational School, which is part of the ŠKODA Academy. This year, the car will be based on the KAMIQ compact SUV, which the pupils will transform into a rally special. For the first time ever, ŠKODA Motorsport is therefore also collaborating on this project.

    TREKKA

    TREKKA as a Lego kit?

New Zealand enthusiast Gareth Davies has designed a kit based on the iconic TREKKA off-road car, which was the first and, to date, virtually only passenger car built in New Zealand. It was manufactured in the 1960s and 1970s by using components from the ŠKODA OCTAVIA. Davies currently presents his design on the Lego Ideas website, and if it receives enough support, the Danish company could actually start producing it. The model is still virtual and measures 34.6 × 18.5 × 19.6 cm. Its author is currently looking for all the parts required to actually build it.

You can support the creation of Lego based on the TREKKA model here.

The TREKKA model kit consists of 1,801 design parts. The author strove to preserve the original’s proportions as much as possible.

The S area is about to undergo a significant transformation. Its main topics, new strategy and name were presented by the S-Forum

    Strategy for the S area

    Vision

WE EMPOWER PEOPLE FOR NEXT-LEVEL ŠKODA.

    Mission

FOCUSED ON PEOPLE, ENHANCING SKILLS AND SHIFTING THE CULTURE THROUGH EXCELLENCE AND JOY.

he automotive leaders identify connectivity and digitisation as the No 1 trend. At the same time, they acknowledge that in the future, policymakers and regulators will have more say about the technological change, development and transition towards eMobility. Before this happens, the automotive market must undergo a major transformation. Such a change will concern not only developments, markets and products but also the labour market, which, like the automotive sector, is undergoing a major transformation. The forms and ways of working are changing, but so are employee requirements.

The carmaker has summarised its approach and new goals in its company-wide NEXT LEVEL – ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030. However, changes will not be driven without our employees’ involvement and teamwork across our departments, so the S area – Human Resource Management has presented ways in which it wishes to support the company from an HR perspective to meet the company-wide goals. On 30 September, the company held its S-Forum at the ŠKODA Museum, where it presented the transformation and new topics that await it and its employees in connection with the transformation to all the involved teams. Gunnar Kilian, VW Group Board Member for Human Resources Management, remotely welcomed the participants right at the start.

With our strategy, we sharpen our focus and position ourselves well for the challenges of the transformation.

    Maren Gräf

Board Member for Human Resources Management

    Let us transform ourselves

For the very first time, employees of the S area could sign up and participate in the 24 strategic HR projects. Maren Gräf, Board Member responsible for the S area, as well as the heads of the individual departments, then presented these projects via their nine initiatives (see the Key Initiatives column) during the event, describing the new goals and objectives. The common vision was that people make change happen, and that everyone bears their share of responsibility for it. HR will also get a new structure with seven “two-letter” departments that will be more interconnected than before. The STO unit was added to the structure, and a new SX unit will be created to cover the strategic theme of diversity. It will take care of S area project management through change management.

“Digitisation, sustainability and diversity are the pillars of our transformation, and our employees are the driving force behind these changes”, said Gräf in her introduction. She also mentioned how challenging the past few months have been from an HR perspective and praised the cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union. She also stressed that she wants to focus on building a more open company culture and increasing the proportion of women in management. “Little by little, women are changing the way management thinks. The company is then, in some ways, better able to support its customers”, said Gräf. The carmaker can also promote diversity by better engaging its employees on parental leave. “Having children is one of the building blocks of our society, and women should not have to pay the price. The carmaker should be able to work with hundreds of employees who take parental leave and come back to work”, said Thomas Schäfer, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

The S-Forum participants also actively participated in discussions through the Slido app, in which they all were interested in the topic of holistic health. They also jointly voted on a new name for the S-Forum: People and Culture, which should cover its functioning more closely in the future. ED

    Key initiatives

In their minute-long presentations, the individual ambassadors presented their nine key initiatives, as well as the content and goals that will lead to a transformation of the S area. In the spirit of the company-wide strategy, they are covered by these three priorities:

    EXPAND

We are the company's partner for all the future challenges across all departments.

    EXPLORE

We support the transformation by exploring new opportunities, services and ways of working.

    ENGAGE

We create a positive, sustainable, ethical and diverse environment for our employees across all regions

    EXPAND

    1

Re- and upskilling for the future

Combining education and work will create lifelong development for our employees and the entire company. Through change and retraining, opportunities for further employee development will be created, leading to the carmaker’s complete transformation.

    2

    Being a strategic business partner

HR's ability to support and develop those individuals who are actively involved in the strategic direction of the company will play a key role in ŠKODA’s successful transformation.

    3

    Winning future talents

The goal is to focus on recruiting and retaining talented candidates who have the desire to move the automotive industry and ŠKODA AUTO forward.

    EXPLORE

    4

    Strive for new work

New working models will be developed in cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union and by using IT tools to support the diversity of our teams and the work–life balance of our employees.

    5

    Evolve performance management

Promote our employees’ motivation and engagement through fair, transparent, digital and governance-focused performance management.

    6

    Drive digitalisation

Technology and digitisation will serve to improve our everyday working life. All the HR services based on our employees’ needs and user experience will be covered by a single digital ecosystem.

    ENGAGE

    7

    Enable diversity & extend sustainability

ŠKODA AUTO will become an inclusive employer that promotes diversity and quality of life across the company and in the regions where it operates.

    8

Drive change management & culture change

A digital learning ecosystem will help to change the mindset of our employees regarding our company culture.

    9

    Improve people wellbeing

Our employees’ physical and mental health will be our priority, and the carmaker will offer a range of tools to support holistic health.

    Quality

    Improvement Thanks to Internal Testing

Some 300 company car users had the opportunity to test the ENYAQ iV electric vehicle before it went on sale

he GQ – Quality Management department combined two common practices: monitoring comments from the first end-customers and having extensive driving tests carried out with the carmaker's service vehicles. Thanks to the testing, the ENYAQ iV was fine-tuned and improved before its launch. “We routinely test our models internally before we start delivering them to our customers; however, about 30 cars are usually involved in a similar process”, explains Luboš Hrubý, Project Manager from the GQM – Quality Management, Complete Vehicle Technology department, who started at ŠKODA AUTO 15 years ago and returned from his assignment at the Nizhny Novgorod plant a year ago.

    12

First weeks of testing were crucial to the cars’ fine-tuning.

    4 966

Comments, most of which were positive or neutral, were submitted by the car users via the Q-App during that time.

The GQ department works with its ramp-up report tool at the launch of every new model. However, it has now been used for the first time with internal customers. ”The goal is to track defects and recalls in real customers’ cars. In this case, the customers are the actual users of our company’s service vehicles”, explains Hrubý. The electric cars in this unusually big test fleet had a wide range of users from different departments and, thus, performed a variety of tasks in service. “Every day, we monitored the condition of the cars and any user comments and focused on incorporating them as effectively as possible. This feedback was presented weekly at the highest levels of the company”, says Hrubý. Before the ENYAQ iV ever went out to its first customers outside the carmaker’s facility, the GQM department had 12 successive inception reports containing an evaluation of the individual comments and measures defined for them.

We monitored the condition of the cars and user comments on a daily basis. We focused on incorporating them effectively.

    Luboš Hrubý

GQM – Quality Management, Complete Vehicle Technology

    Prompt reports via the application

Another new feature of the project was the use of the Q-App, which allowed its users to enter comments and suggestions about the car. “Before the cars were delivered to their customers, we were able to improve the stability and performance of their on-board system and eliminate connectivity issues and minor mechanical issues. The Quality department plans to expand the Q-App application to obtain quick feedback from our end-customers as well”, explains Hrubý. The project has also worked as an awareness-raising campaign for electric cars. “The topic of range and charging came up a lot in the comments, especially in the winter. The users found out quite quickly that if they plan a little, for example, and set a departure time, the car can temper, and its subsequent energy consumption is affected very little”, adds Hrubý.

    ENYAQ iV turns heads

The big test fleet turned heads as well. Our internal users often answered questions from the public and succeeded in dispelling numerous myths about electromobility. They praised the ENYAQ iV's quiet and smooth ride, attractive design and connectivity, including its extensive interior space. The fleet of cars will continue to be used, especially for software update testing. Owing to the success of the project, the carmaker is planning similar testing for some other models. “I would like to thank all those who participated in this project – both our internal users and the entire team that worked hard to improve the ENYAQ iV”, says Florian Weymar, Head of GQ – Quality Management. ED

Update on the measures against COVID-19 at ŠKODA AUTO

s the coronavirus vaccination has failed to achieve sufficient vaccination coverage even after 10 months and the prevalent Delta mutation is spreading much more intensively than before, the number of new cases of coronavirus infection is increasing rapidly.

Rules for wearing respiratory protection valid from 25 October 2021

Following the government's decision, respiratory protection must therefore be worn in all indoor areas of ŠKODA AUTO premises from 25 October 2021 until further notice. The measure also applies to permanent work collectives.

Let’s stick together as the ŠKODA family and get vaccinated, please!

    Vaccination

All permanent employees can book an appointment via the Booking ŠKODA app and visit, for example, the practice at building C21 in Mladá Boleslav. The carmaker offers there primarily the Moderna vaccine, which is administered in two doses. If you are interested in the Johnson & Johnson single vaccine, please book this vaccination by emailing Věra Prokorátová. You can also be vaccinated by your GP with other state-approved vaccines.

Please remember that this is the optimal time of year for flu shots, which are free for all the carmaker’s permanent and agency employees. However, you cannot get both vaccines (COVID-19 and influenza) at the same time. Therefore, consult your GP for the correct timing. ED

You can e-mail your questions about the current situation with “Emergency” in the subject line to e-mail. All the information can also be found in the COVID-19 Signpost on ŠKODA Space.

    Mobile vaccination ambulance

Now, you can also get vaccinated by a mobile team on site without any need to visit the healthcare facilities. One of the locations where the mobile vaccination team was already available for our employees was the ŠKODA Parts Centre Řepov on 12 October. The mobile ambulance unit, which offers the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine against COVID-19, as well as flu the vaccination, can be ordered for facilities or teams (not individuals) by contacting Věra Prokorátová of the SG – Health Services and Ergonomics department at vera.prokoratova@skoda-auto.cz.

    Motivational programme

Your decision to get vaccinated will pay off several times over as you earn points for it in the ŠKODA Benefits Cafeteria. In addition, the carmaker, in cooperation with its social partner the KOVO Trade Union, has extended the validity of its motivational programme for complete vaccination against COVID-19 for another month, until 30 November 2021. By that date, you can choose to take two days off work or 2,000 points in the ŠKODA Benefits Cafeteria for every unused day off. You will receive this reward by e-mailing your valid certificate of complete vaccination against COVID-19 to prohlidky.prevence@skoda‑auto.cz.

  • User Testing

    User Testing

    Best advice from customers

An in-house research team was created for user testing of digital services and applications

hat customers think is of vital importance to the carmaker. For this reason, user experience (UX) testing has become a priority for a dedicated team: the VX/1 – User Experience unit within the new VX – Customer Journey department. Testing with external users was also carried out remotely when restrictions were in place during the COVID-19 pandemic, and recently there have been more opportunities for even more effective testing with face-to-face contact. The UX Team focuses on infotainment apps, the MyŠKODA Connect mobile app and Web services (e.g. the car company’s portal, car configurator and more).

After the UX Team was established in 2018, testing has only ever taken place with partner agencies once a year. Last year, the UX Pool initiative, which brings together employees interested in testing digital products, also helped significantly and is expected to continue (you can read about the UX Pool in the October 2020 issue of ŠKODA Mobil). This year, the transition to self-testing has been greatly accelerated, with the UX Team conducting such tests once every 14 days. “We started building our own research team, which has allowed us to be independent of external agencies and keep the know-how in-house. Having our own research team makes us faster and more responsive to the demands of the teams in the car company. In addition, it is advantageous that the same team conducts the testing and interviewing, so we can better see the results in a broader context”, says Johana Horáková from VX/1.

    Thoughtful user selection

However, the three-person UX Team still works partly with external suppliers – for example, because of legislative restrictions, it cannot recruit real users itself. “Before each test, we define the target group with the product team and then specify the exact requirements for recruiting respondents. Among others, they must be half ŠKODA drivers and half owners of competing cars”, says Horáková. The required group of users acts anonymously. Sometimes, to be as objective as possible, it is important that the user not know which brand’s product they are testing. Of course, the respondents test the product on condition of confidentiality. Testing is carried out in several ways. In most cases, remote online tests prevail, and they work well, for example, to verify a car manufacturer’s Web services. “However, where possible, we’re increasingly testing in person, either directly with a mobile phone for the app, with a computer for the website or directly in the car for the app. This is how we’re best able to simulate real-life circumstances”, explains Horáková. ED

Take advantage of the UX Team’s support

The group responsible for user testing always plans its activities three months in advance. “We are constantly being approached by other teams with requests for new services, so we wish to expand our activities in the future”, says Horáková and urges her colleagues to bring their own ideas: “Don’t be shy to approach us with your testing requests.” You can contact her at this e-mail.

    Dig deeper into the UX

The User Experience (UX) Design includes elements from a range of disciplines, from user research to interaction design up to visual design, with the unifying criterion of customer focus. To better delve into this, the carmaker created its UX1 – User Experience Design – Fundamentals course, which was completed by 300 employees from managerial and other positions. From the beginning of September, two more courses will be offered to help participants to deepen their knowledge and change their thinking in this area. The first of these is the UX2 User Experience Design – Insights for Innovation (from idea to action) course, where they will learn methods to put themselves in the customer’s shoes and learn tools and techniques to help develop new ideas and work with them. The UX3 User Experience Design – Insight-driven Innovation training focuses on rapid prototyping and testing and designing services and digital products, and it introduces suitable tools. Both one-day courses take place remotely via online collaboration applications. ED

ŠKODA’s infotainment applications get a redesign and become more useful

he Calendar, Traffication and Marketplace Offers applications have received or will get new versions with improved user interfaces, thus providing ŠKODA car users with a range of exciting features. Dozens of experts, including external suppliers, are involved in their development. The GX – Product Line Connectivity department covers all of these applications, while the User Experience and Interface Design are covered by the VX – Customer Journey department. “We are continuously adding new functionalities. Now, for the first time, we’re following our user-centred design process when developing our infotainment applications. We review ideas and modifications with the users and incorporate feedback from testing and application usage data into our new versions, which we release two to three times a year. We develop what is actually being used or is in demand”, explains Ondrej Homola, Design Lead from the VX department. Our development team relies on agile development to modify the product according to current requirements. The goal is to achieve maximum adaptability. The carmaker concentrates this application development in its so-called WebApp Product House, where several teams come together.

The new application versions use a design style called ŠKODA Flow, which is becoming common in all ŠKODA digital systems in the car, mobile phone and on the Web. They show the future of infotainment.

These three evolving applications enhance customer services while aligning with the carmaker’s new business models. Users will pay a small fee for Traffication after a six-month trial period. The Calendar is still in its test mode, with a fee being planned if it is used for business purposes. For the Marketplace, it is not the users who pay the car company but the partners involved.

    Traffication

Warning messages on the in-car display increase driving safety. Traffication alerts the driver to various complications on the road, such as parked vehicles. Its unique feature is the warning not to enter the motorway in the wrong direction. ŠKODA AUTO is the first carmaker to integrate this warning directly with its infotainment app. It starts automatically in the background. The new version is currently in its final stages of testing and will significantly expand the number of warnings about other types of hazards. The users will see a new interface and features they have been calling for.

    Calendar

It allows you to spend time behind the wheel more productively – for example, it displays the agenda from your connected calendar, can guide you to a scheduled meeting and also allows you to join conference calls in the car. It is currently compatible with Google Calendar, and more features are in the works.

    Marketplace offers

This is a service based on the concept of location-based offers. This means that the driver receives personalised and only relevant offers on the road – no unsolicited advertising. For example, if the driver runs out of fuel, they will receive an offer from a nearby petrol station with free coffee, discounted prices, etc. If the driver accepts it, the navigation system will take them to that location. In the Czech Republic, the partners include OMV petrol stations, KFC restaurants, Globus stores and the shared mobility services operated by ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab: BeRider and HoppyGo. The system also currently operates in Austria and is in the process of being expanded to Poland and Germany providing offers from local partners. ED

Where the applications can be used

The applications are available in cars with the Columbus 9.2”, 10”, and Amundsen 9.2” infotainment systems. The models are: OCTAVIA Gen IV*, FABIA Gen IV*, SCALA and KAMIQ from its 2021 model, the SUPERB and KAROQ from its 2021 model and the KODIAQ from its 2021 model. They will be available in the ENYAQ iV cars next year.

    * Traffication and Marketplace will be available in these models by the end of the year.

  • WE’RE GOING SMOKE-FREE AT ŠKODA AUTO

WE’RE GOING SMOKE-FREE AT ŠKODA AUTO

    It’s normal not to smoke

On 21 September, there was an open discussion on non-smoking with Marek Jancák and Štěpán Lacina

he carmaker became a completely smoke-free company on 1 September. After a series of discussions and in agreement with the KOVO Trade Union, ŠKODA AUTO followed up on the hygiene and safety measures it had introduced during the pandemic to protect the health of its employees. Nevertheless, the company-wide ban on smoking is sparking heated discussions even among non-smokers now. About 75 percent of them are at the carmaker. “We’re not throwing the minority of our employees overboard; we’re ready to lend a helping hand. However, they must also take part in this effort”, said Marek Jancák, Head of the PF – Car Production, during a discussion with our employees. “It’s better to be on the side that says ‘Let’s not smoke but take care of our health’ than to be on the other side”, added Štěpán Lacina, Head of SP – Human Resources Planning, pointing to several employee programmes that promote a healthy lifestyle. As part of its new measures, ŠKODA AUTO abolished smoking corners and designated smoking areas throughout the company. They are now being repurposed for the leisure time of all employees, not just smokers. “We did not build any corners for non-smokers, while one new smoking corner costs CZK 200,000 at current prices, which would mean investing CZK 7 million in renovation in the whole car factory”, Š. Jancák pointed out, adding that it does not make sense to invest in harming one’s health. And since even substitutes for regular cigarettes, such as IQOS or electronic versions, pose some health risks, the carmaker, in agreement with the KOVO Trade Union, sought a uniform ban on all tobacco products without distinction

It will soon be a given that we don’t smoke at ŠKODA AUTO.

ŠKODA AUTO’s management is fully aware that this is a difficult and polarising issue with a number of positive and negative consequences. Some of these were already present before the ban, such as smoking outside designated areas which also exposed non-smokers to second-hand smoking and increased the risk of fire. “We are investing considerably in fire prevention and risk minimisation. It should be noted that if something happens, an employee not only risks losing their job but also has criminal liability. Already, several employees have lost their jobs for violating the measures”, according to Š. Lacina. However, he said the goal of the measure is not to re-educate smokers. “We’re not saying that a person should stop smoking; we’re not trying to make them quit. We’re only saying that they will not smoke during working hours and while on the ŠKODA AUTO premises because it is forbidden here, just like drinking alcohol or taking drugs”, clarified Š. Lacina. That’s why the car maker offers its help to any employee who wants to quit smoking.

ŠKODA AUTO’s latest move has also triggered discussions about a smoking ban in the whole Czech society. “That this will happen is certain. The question is when”, said M. Jancák. Just as cigarettes gradually moved out of the public domain when they were almost completely banned in advertisements in 2002 and in restaurants from 2017, completely non-smoking companies will gradually become common as well. ED

    Discipline above all

The ban on smoking on all ŠKODA AUTO premises follows the same rules as the ban on drinking alcohol or lighting fires, etc. The carmaker agreed on these rules with its social partner, the KOVO Trade Union, and together, they have determined the penalties for non-compliance.

    Breach of smoking ban

Smoking is considered a breach of work discipline and, in such a case, you disciplinary action awaits. One of them is you may even face employment termination.

    Occupational health and safety hazards

A failure to comply with the ban on smoking in highly hazardous areas (storage of combustibles or fuel, etc.), as well as damaging smoke detectors, already constitutes a serious breach of work discipline. This offence will be dealt with by the employer with a notice or immediate termination of employment.

The new feature is used to access documents on Team Webs – text files, spreadsheets, presentations or PDFs. It also provides access to Business Intelligence (BI) reports. Therefore, the application replaces the existing iTeamWeb and MOBI. You will find useful features in it, like the option to add handwritten or classic notes to PDF documents. ŠKOffice might remind some people of MS Teams, but the application is different. MS Teams does not allow access to Team Webs, and it is not yet possible to store secret data in it. The name of the ŠKOffice application came from a challenge on the IdeaSpace platform. ŠKOffice is developed in an agile way, so new functionalities and improvements will be added gradually. For example, support for Power BI are being planned. If you have any questions, please contact GSO/1 – Market and Business Intelligence, who is working on the development of the application with FID/1 – Local Delivery Center. ED

    Speed up your routine

Power Automate and Power Apps courses teach you how to create automated processes and applications

long with the deployment of the new Office 365 software ecosystem, our employees have gained the ability to use the Power Platform suite of process automation and data analytics tools. They can be used for so-called robotic process automation (you can read more about it in the November 2020 issue of ŠKODA Mobil), which eliminates inefficient repetitive activities, for example, during administrative tasks. Since September, the ŠKODA Academy is offering new full-time courses for advanced IT users on the topic of analytical data processing. The Power Automate training course will teach participants how to set up common office activities, so that the tool performs them automatically and without any paperwork in the background, even without any in-depth programming knowledge. It is used to automate routine activities – preparing documents and sending them out automatically, sending notifications, doing data transfers and more. The Power Automate course is followed by a training course focused on Power Apps, which make it easy and fast to create professional-level applications. “The goal of these training courses is to demonstrate the basic functionalities of both tools and to motivate our employees to further develop themselves in this topic and to create their own automated procedures and applications”, explains Eva Pelcová from SE – ŠKODA Academy. The Power Apps Team Solutions course is an extension of these training courses. It will further expand the competences of those participants who wish to create and publish their applications in the ŠKODA environment. These courses were prepared by the ŠKODA Academy in cooperation with our IT guarantor from the FIT/1 – Enterprise Architecture & Technology department and an expert sponsor from the PFK-K – Body Shop Kvasiny. The Introduction to Robotic Process Automation course, which was launched this year, is also available to employees who are interested and provides a knowledge base before introducing them to the Power Platform tools. ED

    ŠKODA iV DAY Roadshow

ŠKODA AUTO visits nine Czech universities to present its latest electromobility solutions

he ŠKODA iV DAY Roadshow, which forms part of the carmaker’s long-term support of technical education, began on 22 September at the University of Pardubice. The event lasted until the end of October, and ŠKODA AUTO visited nine Czech universities during this time. The roadshow featured lectures and discussions with Technical Development, Production and Logistics, and IT experts, who presented the full range of electrified iV vehicles to those who were interested: from the purely electric SUV ENYAQ iV up to the plug-in hybrid variants SUPERB iV, OCTAVIA iV and OCTAVIA iV RS. In addition to the cars, the students were also able to get a closer look at the main electric car components (traction battery, electric motor and charging system).

The students of technical and IT disciplines had the opportunity to learn about electric vehicles and their key components.

“Our cooperation with universities has a long tradition at ŠKODA AUTO. The automotive industry is currently undergoing a major transformation, so I see quality technical education and talent support as key to the carmaker’s future”, says Maren Gräf, Board Member for Human Resources Management. There is currently a great demand for young talent in the electrical engineering sector and, based on the experience from academia, it is essential to support this area as much as possible. That is why ŠKODA AUTO already launched its Tech Trainee programme for university graduates at the beginning of this year. Its objective is to identify talented candidates, particularly in the fields of electromobility and digitisation, and it will introduce young candidates to the necessary fundamentals for the in-demand and specialised professions during their one-year training. It has also changed the way of organising our open houses. Whereas they used to take place directly at the carmaker’s facilities, it now organises roadshows. These allow the carmaker to establish closer contacts among experts and academia and reach more students from various technical disciplines with a focus on electrical engineering, IT, cybersecurity and the automotive industry. What Awaits the Best Trainees?

Another 13 trainees join the ranks of the Student Talent Pool Programme

here is a lot of interest in joining the Student Talent Pool Programme. Every year, the selection process brings together nominations of nearly 100 ŠKODA trainees; approximately one in 10 is chosen. Talented trainees are nominated for the programme by their supervisors. The candidates then complete a selection process consisting of language and diagnostic test. The most successful ones proceed to the second round participate in an oral interview with the recruiter.

For students, joining the programme is a matter of prestige. It is a gateway to becoming an internal ŠKODA employee in the future, but its benefits also include a better salary, among others. In addition, the programme members can take a number of development courses focused on both professional knowledge and communication skills. During their regular rounds, they learn about various areas of ŠKODA AUTO and can also meet the carmaker’s managers. “In total, around 45 to 50 trainees are included in the programme”, said Markéta Jarošová from the STR/1 – Employer Branding department.

Each trainee has a role to play in the programme. Depending on their choice, they can become a ‘buddy’, ambassador or they can support PR and HR team. Currently, the Student Talent Pool Programme is greatly interested in technically and IT oriented students. ED

    UNI.Space

    Unique, Versatile and University Facilities

ŠKODA AUTO has opened additional UNI.Space facilities at two Prague universities

he UNI.Space concept serves as a reminder of the carmaker’s close cooperation with its partner universities. There are six UNI.Space facilities at Czech universities, with the Technical Faculty of Life Sciences and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Czech Technical University gaining two new facilities. “Through our support, we contribute to extensive, practice-oriented education and open up a range of career opportunities for young talent in the automotive industry”, says Maren Gräf, Board Member for Human Resources Management.

The carmaker has long connected academic facilities with development, production and other areas of its operation.

UNI.Space features specially designed zones where students can find ample space to prepare for their studies or take a rest. The concept is based on an attractive interior design that includes information screens and panels or sockets and chargers for mobile devices. The zone is dominated by a modular sofa set with upholstery made of 98 percent recycled material. The UNI.Space name emphasises that this is a unique, versatile facility on campus. In addition, a special feature of the installation at the CTU premises will be a permanent exhibit – the first all-electric ENYAQ iV model. This is an exclusive example that served as the director’s car for the Tour de France cycling race this year.

ŠKODA AUTO provides universities with components and entire non-homologated vehicles for study and research purposes. In 2020 alone, the company provided 410 teaching aids for educational purposes, including 65 cars and 145 engines or gearboxes to support teachers and students in their vocational subjects. It also offers students internships, trainee and PhD programmes, as well as expert consultations for their final theses. In this way, the carmaker raises the level of the domestic academic environment, which is one of the main objectives of its social responsibility activities. ED

    AIM.Lab

The original AIM.Lab was created at the Technical University of Ostrava. It is the first initiative of its kind and focuses on data analysis and the application of machine learning and artificial intelligence, as well as production optimisation issues.

    UNI.Lab

In this shared laboratory at the Technical University of Liberec, students can meet with the carmaker’s representatives during seminars, lectures etc. They can also find individual elements of the first purely electric ENYAQ iV model and, thus, have the opportunity to learn about technological innovations directly on the university campus. In addition, starting in the new academic year, there will be a shared workplace for workshops and a place to use 3D printers for study purposes.

    ŠKODA Challenge, This Time Online

Top representatives from the international dealer network compared their knowledge

he ŠKODA Online Challenge 2021 took place after a one-year break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Nearly 100 representatives from 17 markets around the world took part in the 10th round of the competition for the best representatives of the dealer and service network, as well as importers – this time, remotely. The contestants gathered at the importer’s premises, where they had a room featuring computers and cameras. First, they used laptops to complete challenging tasks in the eight categories. Together, they then met in the virtual ŠKODA world created on the three-dimensional Confer-O-Matic platform, where they partially completed their team task. The objective was to test their ability to work together and choose the right strategy. The teams then demonstrated their comprehensive knowledge of the ŠKODA brand in the so-called Brand Test. This year, eMobility tasks were added both in the individual categories and as part of the team activities. “The closing ceremony was held with the participating heads of Sales and After Sales at ŠKODA AUTO and broadcast live online. Despite these non-standard conditions, we successfully preserved the emotions that always come with the awards ceremony by interacting with the markets in the MS Teams application”, notes Pavla Hradecká from the VX4 – Customer Journey Strategy department. The winners received crystal trophies and financial or material gifts. ED

    Carbon Neutrality in Vrchlabí

At its Vrchlabí production facility, ŠKODA AUTO presented new measures to Czech journalists

n 5 and 6 October, ŠKODA AUTO presented to Czech journalists the measures that have helped the Vrchlabí plant achieve CO2-neutral production. More than 20 media representatives listened to the expert presentations by Miroslav Kroupa, Head of PS – Brand Management, Lenka Bočková, Head of PSU – Environmental and Work Protection, and Ivan Slimák, Plant Manager of the Vrchlabí plant. This was followed by a tour of the most important measures directly on site (see the Twelve Measures column). They illustrate how the Vrchlabí plant has reduced its emissions and increased process efficiency. Last year, 41,500 MWh of its total energy consumption of 47,000 MWh already came from renewable sources, which corresponds to a share of more than 90 percent. Its carbon dioxide emissions have fallen from 45,000 tonnes to 3,000 tonnes per year. The plant offsets its remaining CO2 emissions by purchasing offset certificates to support projects that help to protect the climate. “Thanks to the CO2 neutrality of our high-tech factory in Vrchlabí, we’re setting the direction and showing the way towards energy effectiveness”, says Miroslav Kroupa, Head of PS – Brand Management. Effective energy management has enabled the Vrchlabí plant to save more than 2,000 MWh of thermal energy and almost 1,500 MWh of electrical energy in the past year alone. ED

    Twelve Measures

    1

Thanks to the modification of the conveyor for turning and drilling operations, where the plant has implemented the principle of gravity separation of the residual emulsion, this emulsion returns to the machine at no additional cost.

    2

By systematically monitoring and preventively maintaining the hydraulic oil in its machines, the plant reduces the amount consumed and prevents hazardous waste generation.

    3

Electrostatic cleaning extends the life of oil and, thus, reduces not only how much is consumed but also the amount of hazardous waste.

    4

New thermal insulation of hardening lines reduces the energy consumption of case-hardening furnaces.

    5

The end of the demanding nine-bar compressed air production was achieved by rebuilding two machines that now operate at six bars.

    6

New controlled air exchange equipment in the halls reduces energy consumption.

    7

Implementation of quality management of waste sorting according to the Waste Management Information System standard.

    8

Equipment for pressing grinding sludge from the filtering station allows filtered oil to be re-used in production.

    9

9 Pumping cutting oil from the bottom of the central filtration station tanks reduces hazardous waste generation. In addition, some oil can be re-used.

    10

The installation of equipment used for industrial evaporation by boiling reduced the amount of hazardous waste.

    11

By replacing the original batteries in the material handling machines with lithium batteries, the plant significantly saves energy and reduces CO2.

    12

By using condensation fluid, the plant has reduced its consumption of water and detergent.

WE HAVE AN OPEN DIALOGUE ON SUSTAINABILITY

wo years ago, the carmaker introduced its new company-wide sustainability strategy programme based on three pillars: environmental, social and economic-administrative. In the context of ŠKODA AUTO’s new strategy, which has sustainability as one of its main items, and the rapid development of trends in the automotive industry coupled with the growing importance of the sustainability agenda, this programme has to be updated. The sustainability strategy should reflect current trends, like our production and products reaching carbon neutrality more quickly, as well as the trends in corporate social responsibility or reporting. Our structured dialogue with the stakeholders helps us to determine the important so-called material topics. Stakeholders include all persons or organisations that influence or are influenced by the company’s operation: our employees, customers, business partners, government representatives, media, the KOVO Trade Union, communities and others. ”During their interviews, they are presented with a list of topics that are important from our perspective and are asked to prioritise them from the stakeholder’s perspective. They are also encouraged to give for suggestions for new topics to focus on. The result – the so-called materiality matrix – shows the intersection between topics reflecting the interests of our company and stakeholders, which will become one of the important inputs for the new sustainability strategy”, says Libor Boček from the GSC – Corporate Strategy and Innovation Management department. By mapping and trying to understand our stakeholders’ expectations, the trust of various stakeholders in our company’s operations is built. Aligning corporate interests and understanding the expectations of the environment is part of responsible business, which contributes to the company’s success. ED

Do you wish to get involved as well?

Our employees themselves will be able to have their say in our sustainability strategy for the next period. The GSC is going to reach out to them for this purpose with its call to action on ŠKODA Space.

Pořadatel si vyhrazuje právo i bez uvedení důvodů Dobu soutěže zkrátit, Soutěž přerušit nebo zrušit či změnit její Pravidla, a to i bez udělení výhry a bez poskytnutí náhrad. Pořadatel si rovněž vyhrazuje právo nahradit ohlášenou výhru předmětem podobného typu a odpovídající hodnoty a upravit podmínky předání výhry v případě, že výhra nebude poskytnuta způsobem umožňujícím předání výhry vítězům v souladu s těmito Pravidly.
