ENVIRONMENTALLY

SOUND SORTING

Simply dumping all the material gathered as part of the collection at the

dumping ground would mean not only

physically harming nature but also having to gather more materials to create new products. Discarded electrical

devices and batteries also contain

many dangerous substances such as

mercury, lead, cadmium and brominated flame retardants. And these consist of a large amount of recyclable

and reusable materials such as iron,

steel, aluminium or copper. Precious

metals are also present, for example

in circuit boards.

T

he car company has launched web pages where people can enjoy the peace of

the forest, along with its sounds. Various icons

can be used to mix sounds in order to produce

a sound exactly like in their favourite meadow.

LOWER YOUR EVERYDAY STRESS

Hlaslesa.cz follows up on the long-term social responsibility project One Tree Planted for Every Car Sold in the Czech Republic.

It is inspired by a revelation of American scientists that relaxing sounds can reduce nervousness by up to one-third, and a number of

trees around a person not only benefits their

breathing and heart function but also improves post-surgery recovery and smoothness

of the pregnancy. Internet users can therefore

set the volume of various sounds that, in turn,

create a forest atmosphere. Things to listen to

include a summer night with crickets, a creek

and an owl in the distance. It doesn’t matter

that you are actually located in an office in the

middle of a city.

ŠKODA TREES

The company has planted over 640,000 trees

in over 60 locations since 2007 as part of the

grant programme One Tree Planted for Every

Car Sold in the Czech Republic. Every year,

many ŠKODA AUTO employees join in to plant

trees and permanently contribute to protecting the climate and maintaining bio-diversity. The planting events are also traditionally

joined by trainees, students of the Apprentice

School of Mechanical Engineering, who mostly assist in expanding the amount of greenery

close to their school. Last year, for example,

they helped plant trees around the apprentice school building in Mladá Boleslav. Many

employees and their family members also

help search for locations to plant trees. Meanwhile, the “ŠKODA Trees” project has become

a prime example of the carmaker’s social and

environmental awareness.

GREENERY, GREENERY EVERYWHERE

More municipalities and cities, in the vicinity

of the company’s plants, can enjoy a greener

neighbourhood. The purpose of the planting

is non-commercial: The trees function as anti-erosion protection, help to revitalise dumping grounds for construction or communal

waste, serve as green zones between roads

and municipalities and contribute to the countryside the re-cultivation and bio-diversity of

forest areas. The event is an important part of

the GreenFuture programme activities and fits

perfectly with the series of measures in the

area of social responsibility of the company inside the country.  Petr Holeček

UNIFYING EQUIVALENT

There is currently a very popular metric for expressing total environmental

economy. It is called the CO2 equivalent. This indicator works as a unifying element that allows us to compare

otherwise hard-to-compare environmental negative influences with each

other.

By recycling material contained in

the devices that ŠKODA AUTO turned

in, we have saved the equivalent of

24,968.8 kg worth of CO2.  Petr Holeček
