he Emission and Engine Centres compound is located a stone’s throw from

Mladá Boleslav Castle, which is why the

company strove to plant as much green

here as possible. Today, passers by can’t

‑

miss the walls covered in greenery. It has

been four years since the green façade of

the Engine Centre was created, and many

of the plants have reached the expected

height. The Emission Centre building is

newer, which is why the climbing plants

there are not yet fully grown. The greenery climbs the façade from the ground up,

while other plants are growing from the

roof down and meeting the fully grown

ones in the middle. There are about five

types of climbing plants on the buildings –

both evergreen and deciduous. The roofs

are decorated with various kinds of grass,

alpine plants and xerophilous plants, all of

which thrive in harsh conditions.

For both buildings, the carmaker decided to use plants that grow fast and do

not require constant care and watering.

The company tends to the greenery three

times a year by cutting out overgrown

leaves, starting irrigation in the spring

and winterising the whole system in the

autumn. Drip irrigation is controlled automatically through a sensor that is activated during dry spells.

Green roofs and façades have a positive impact on people’s mood and the environment. Moreover, in summer they retain rainwater, which cools the buildings.

Gardening tip

The fastest climbing plant in the

world is the Virginia creeper, or

Parthenocissus quinquefolia. It is

a flowering plant that belongs to

the grape family. In ideal conditions,

it can climb 30 metres, and thanks

to adhesive pads on the side of its

leaves, it easily creeps up smooth

façades. It blossoms between July

and September.
