What is happening at ŠKODA AUTO
New Head of Operations in North Africa
As of 1 January, Arwa Oeljeklaus has taken over the management of the North African region, for which ŠKODA AUTO has recently accepted Group responsibility. So far, she has held the position of Head of VTC – Business Development and CRM CR where she worked on the strategic development of the Czech import organisation and developed systems and processes for building and managing customer relationships. In the North African region, she will currently be in charge of the Egyptian, Tunisian, Moroccan, and Algerian markets (read more detail on page 7). Arwa Oeljeklaus comes from France, and in addition to her mother tongue, she also speaks English, Arabic, German, and also some Czech.
Milestone reached despite the crisis
In 2020, the carmaker managed to cross the threshold of 1 million cars delivered for the seventh year in a row. The situation was significantly complicated by the spring production shutdown that lasted for 39 days as a result of the coronavirus crisis, as well as the temporary interruption of sales channels. As a result, deliveries decreased overall by 19.1 percent as compared with 2019. In the second half of the year, sales promotions were effective and contributed to the results: The carmaker increased its share of the European market to 5.4 percent; in Russia, it managed to set a new record, boosting deliveries by 6.8 percent to 94,600 vehicles. The global situation was also reflected in the VW Group results, whose deliveries fell 15.2 percent to 9,305,400 vehicles. Still, it was able to increase its share of the passenger car market. The sales of fully electric models grew significantly, with deliveries rising to 214 percent. Plug-in hybrids, which include the SUPERB iV and OCTAVIA iV, saw a sales increase of 175 percent. This year’s electric offensive will be further boosted by our fully electric ENYAQ iV.
CAR OF THE YEAR 2021: OCTAVIA IN THE FINALS
A jury selected the fourth generation of ŠKODA’s best-selling car as one of the seven finalists for the prestigious international Car of the Year award. Six dozen journalists from 23 European countries chose from among 29 models that had qualified. The announcement of the ultimate winner will be made on 1 March. The latest OCTAVIA follows on from its previous generation, which made the shortlist in 2014.

The SCALA in the colours of the Czech Police
The portfolio of ŠKODA cars used by the Czech Police will be expanded with 1,200 SCALA cars in the next four years after the carmaker won a tender worth CZK 840 million. The police cars with a 1.5 TSI 110 kW engine and a seven-speed DSG transmission will receive special modifications and equipment. This includes different springs and shock absorbers and more robust housings for the engine and the gearbox. The Czech Police is already using the compact hatchbacks in a civilian design, although the typical stickers will be something new on Czech roads. The SCALA is also used by the police force in the UK.

A Name for a New SUV? KUSHAQ
The first mass-produced model based on the MQB-A0-IN platform developed by ŠKODA AUTO especially for the Indian market will have its premiere in March of this year. However, the carmaker has already shown a covered car (see the picture). The new compact SUV will be called KUSHAQ. The carmaker found inspiration in Old Indian Sanskrit, in which the word "kushak" refers to a king or ruler. This will be the first model derived from the INDIA 2.0 project, in which ŠKODA AUTO is responsible for the model offensive of the entire VW Group on the Indian subcontinent. The car will be available with 1.0 and 1.5 TSI petrol engines.

News from the Group
Herbert Diess highlights the role of ŠKODA AUTO
The CEO of the VW Group has officially confirmed the launch of the new-generation FABIA in a COMBI version as well. He highlighted the extraordinary value for money in terms of quality and equipment that customers get with this car. The FABIA COMBI will be produced in Mladá Boleslav, but it will not reach the market before 2023. On his LinkedIn profile, Diess also praised how the new CEO of ŠKODA AUTO, Thomas Schäfer, has managed to take over the company’s leadership, and he highlighted his NEXT LEVEL ŠKODA programme with the “Expand, Explore and Engage” principles.

Construction work
More comfortable parking in Kvasiny
In January, employees at the Kvasiny plant started using a new entrance at P1, the largest of the car parks. It is a one-way, so the exit remains unchanged. The new addition speeds up arrivals at the plant and also relieves congestion in Solnice, which often struggles with traffic jams before the start of a work shift. However, the situation will be completely resolved only with the city bypass and an increase in the roundabout’s capacity on Road I/14. The Hradec Králové region and the town of Solnice are now striving to acquire the necessary land to start construction work. ŠKODA AUTO is supporting them in their efforts.
ŠKODA AUTO Helps
School supplies for Indian children
The PS – Brand Management department employees had organised a collection of school supplies for children from the Balgram Children Orphanage in the Pune, India. The handover of selected items took place with the participation of PS representatives from ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL). The orphanage received hundreds of notebooks and stationery, fifty school backpacks, and many other aids, which were collected in cooperation with the KOVO Unions. They have been dedicated to helping in India for a long time. Last year, for example, they organised a fundraiser to support the completion of the Jagriti boarding school for blind girls in Pune.
Motorsport
The racing special accelerated
Before the 2021 season, ŠKODA Motorsport had perfected the successful FABIA Rally2 evo. A number of technical improvements made to the entire car helped with the engine output. A long set of gears suitable for faster races now pushes the maximum speed 15 km/h higher to 202 km/h. Improved shock absorbers and an additional supply of differential ramps for low-traction surfaces have also been added. All the changes are available to customer teams as standard and optional equipment and already have their valid homologation. The improvements increase the car’s competitiveness on rally tracks around the world.
racing specials have already been delivered to customer teams as part of the FABIA Rally2 project by January 2021
Coronavirus
Coronavirus
We still have to protect ourselves
he actions that we have taken to combat the spread of COVID-19 and introduced at ŠKODA AUTO in cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union are proving effective. When employees returned to work after the Christmas holiday, there was extensive antigen testing at 13 points on 4 and 5 January. The number of positive cases was significantly lower than the national average at the time. The coronavirus pandemic situation, however, remains serious and will be solved only with the vaccine roll-out (see information on page 6 of this issue).

Get tested for free
COVID-19 can spread even when you don’t show any symptoms. The carmaker therefore continues to offer all MFA card holders the opportunity to take antigen tests for free. All you have to do is book your dates in the COVID-19 Case Records application, which is available on ŠKODA Space or in @SMART Applications.
Don’t forget about the measures
In recent weeks, there has been a rise in the number of employee violations of COVID-19-related health and safety measures. The high number of violations is particularly connected with the obligation to wear a face mask and the prohibition on smoking. The measures against the spread of the disease have been in place for many weeks and can be a bother, but please continue to follow them. Keep in mind that the consequences of COVID-19 can be tragic. Following the measures will help to protect the health of all of us.
Keep track
Apart from the regular monitoring of current information on coronavirus on the ŠKODA Space homepage, it is worth downloading the COVID info card onto your phone. It will provide you with an overview of all the applicable measures in the ŠKODA AUTO plants.
Central Pilot Hall
Central Pilot Hall
Where New Models Come Alive
In January, ŠKODA AUTO opened its new Central Pilot Hall M63 that features state-of-the-art technologies for pre-serial production
he new workplace will be used for planning, testing, production, and commissioning of pre-serial cars, which will thus be prepared for the production commencement. In this facility, qualified workers will be utilising, for example, their own body shop, assembly line, measuring centre, or virtual reality studio. “Designing pre-serial vehicles, verifying product properties and production equipment, and simulating serial production are extremely important steps before the production begins. Thanks to its ultra-modern equipment, the new pilot hall significantly expands our possibilities,” highlights Dr. Michael Oeljeklaus, Member of the Board for Production and Logistics, the novelty.
12,142
square meters are occupied by the halls and office facilities of the new operation
534
million CZK (20.4 million euros) were invested by ŠKODA AUTO in a new pilot hall

Fire up the car’s nervous system
Since it was created in 1993, the Pilot Shop department has been operating in Building V17B. New requirements for more advanced electrical equipment of both conventional and fully electric cars have made it necessary to construct a modern pre-series centre. The number of pre-series vehicles has soared in recent years, not only for the needs of new projects but also for the testing of stricter emission regulations and homologations. Demanding testing is required, for example, by new cybersecurity standards or assistance systems that become more sophisticated every year. The so-called gradual activation of vehicle functions and the programming of control units are of crucial importance for new projects. For example, the new ENYAQ iV contains 107 of these units, plus 200 connectors and 99 metres of cables; its central brain consists of two computers controlling up to 51 assistance systems and 340 different functions. This all runs on 10 operating systems. To activate such a complex “vehicle nervous system” and ensure mutual communication between hardware and software, as well as a seamless interaction with the driver, is one of the most complex tasks the people working at the Central Pilot Shop have.
New, more complex car models can contain up to 7,000 parts. Pre-production in the Central Pilot Hall checks that they are compatible with each other.
Useful and modern technologies
To test the required car properties, including parts from external suppliers, the Central Pilot Shop carries out installation tests both physically and through virtual reality. The 3D printer is a useful device that makes it easier to cooperate with factories abroad. For example, thanks to optical measurement and artificial intelligence when making templates for the Body Shop, the 3D printer creates a product that may be needed, for example, by our colleagues in Pune, India. An e-programmed 3D print file is sent by e-mail, and they print the required component directly at their workplace. ed
Modern and Green
New Central Pilot Hall M63 not only provides ample modernisation to the pre-serial production, but also has become another carmaker’s contribution to environmental protection. Its first positive rests in the fact that it was not built “from a scratch”, but it was created by revitalising a so-called brownfield (built-up but underused area premises – editor’s note). In this case, it concerned Hall M10 whose history dates back to 1970. It originally served as a galvanising plant for galvanising parts, such as bumpers or wheel covers of the ŠKODA 100 model. In the 90s, its operation ceased to suit its purpose because of the ecological reasons and the carmaker closed it. The Hall then served partly as a warehouse for suppliers, until its reconstruction began in 2019. In doing so, ŠKODA AUTO placed the maximum emphasis on energy efficiency. The facility’s external walls feature strong thermal insulation, all the lighting is provided by energy-saving LED technologies, and the building is also ready for the installation of photovoltaic modules. ED
Petr Kuba
Head of PA – LAUNCH Management
“With the building of the Central Pilot Shop, we’re entering a new digital and software-driven future. We are ready for new car concepts in our areas equipped with the latest technologies. And it’s not just about technology: We’ve created a decent environment for our employees and maintained safety during the construction and commissioning of our pre-series cars. We designed the concept of the Central Pilot Shop in cooperation with the SO – Company Security department so that the area with the secret pre-series cars and EVs powered by HV batteries would operate under maximum security. This is done by using surveillance and thermal cameras, which send an alert in time in the case of rising temperatures inside the vehicle.
Technical Development
Technical Development
Test Cars and Prototypes under One Roof
Technical development opened a new centre in Česana, which brings higher efficiency, more agile processes, and savings
similarly advanced workplace, such as the Central Pilot Hall, has also been completed by ŠKODA AUTO Technical Development department. While the finished models are already being prepared for serial production in Hall M63, the robotic stations, virtual reality stations, and other state-of-the-art technologies available at one place in Česana will be used for building test cars and prototypes. “In the new state-of-the-art complex, we want to efficiently build up to 300 test cars and 120 prototypes a year. We have thus created the best conditions for our highest-level work on models that will shape the face of the ŠKODA brand,” says Dr. Johannes Neft, new Board Member for Technical Development. The increasingly powerful electronic architecture of cars places ever increasing emphasis on functional tests of electricity, electronics, assistance systems, and communication between on-board units. Therefore, the trial version of the new fully electric ENYAQ iV model was partly created in this facility. After its completion, it also features, for example, the virtual reality equipment, which allows pre-configuration and customisation of workplaces. Another novelty is represented by two robotic stations, thanks to which the share of automation in body production has increased from 15 to 45 percent. By shortening the distances between the individual production sections, the carmaker will save approximately 1,800 litres of fuel per year, i.e. approximately five tons of CO2 emissions. The location of the complete storage facility directly at the car production brings great savings as well, reducing the logistics costs by EUR 150,000 (approximately CZK 39.3 million) per year. ED
David Vaněk
Head of EGV – Prototype build and model making
The new facility has three storeys. Parts storage, bodywork production, paint shop, and assembly are located under one roof, which shortens the transfers between them. At the same time, the high degree of automation enables more agile processes and significantly increases the capacity for building test cars and prototypes.

Vaccinations
will get us
back to normalThe carmaker is ready to provide vaccinations against COVID-19 to up to 1,200 employees a day for free
survey conducted at the end of last year showed that most employees at ŠKODA AUTO are interested in getting vaccinated against COVID-19 (see the chart). Vaccinations have already started all over the world, and the carmaker is busy with preparations. In cooperation with social partner, the KOVO Trade Union, the company works on a vaccination strategy acquired the necessary equipment and set up vaccination centres with qualified staff.
In record time and thanks to massive funding, scientists have come up with a vaccine that will end this societal and economic downturn that has tragically affected so many people’s lives.
Vaccinations can begin as soon as possible, although it depends on when the government releases the vaccines – more importantly, there is no desire to jump ahead of those who should be first in line to get the vaccination. “The government currently has limited resources of vaccines and staff, so the decision has been made that the most vulnerable population group and those caring for them will be vaccinated first. Next in line are pensioners, citizens with health problems and employees working in critical infrastructure. The last to be vaccinated will be people of working age and of good health”, explains Jiří Prokop, head of SG – Health Services and Ergonomics.
Immunity will be a team effort
The company's communication campaign will seek to motivate employees to get vaccinated. It will include an information website summarising the details of how the vaccinations are organised and will address certain ambiguities. “The campaign’s main goal, however, will be the joy of finally having a vaccine that will let us all meet, cooperate, enjoy our time, relax and go for a coffee or beer or watch football together”, says Prokop, whom employees can contact with any related questions or concerns.
The vaccine has a multifaceted effect. When they encounter the virus, those who have been vaccinated will either not get sick at all or not have a severe medical reaction. They will also protect the people around them – since their infection rate is very low, it is very unlikely for them to spread the disease among their family or co-workers. “Sadly, those who decide not to get the vaccine rely on 75 percent of their co-workers to do it for them”, says Prokop, adding that once he is sure there are enough vaccines for everyone, he will be happy to lead by example and have himself vaccinated. Building herd immunity is in the interests of the company and beyond – to break the circle of recurring waves and shutdowns and thereby avoid overwhelming hospitals and having unnecessary deaths. RED

Regional Markets
Regional Markets
New Opportunities Are Opening Up
ŠKODA AUTO took over regional responsibility for the entire VW Group in North Africa and in Russia. What do these markets offer?
hen speaking about the North African region, most people do not think first about, the ideal car market. However, there are 250 million people, most of them young, living in this fast-developing area,, and there’s a demand for reliable and practical cars. People in North Africa know the ŠKODA brand and associate it with a long tradition. In ŠKODA Museum archive, there are pictures of L&K cars in the year 1909 in Egypt. „As part of VW Group, our goal is to become one of the strongest players on the markets. We see great potential, especially in Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia, where SKODA achieved the best market share in our history in 2020. It is also important to us being on the steering wheel and coordinate the strategy among the Group. It will enable us to have a better overview on the growth potentials and develop the best adapted offer to our various customers in the region”, explains Arwa Oeljeklaus who took over management of the North African region at ŠKODA AUTO on 1 January (see page 2).
There are no future car sales without after sales. Customers in North Africa are as demanding as they are in Europe. “Excellent after sales service is key pre-requisite for building and further strengthening of the brand reputation and that applies to North Africa as well as to any European market,” says Jan Procházka, Head of VA2 – After Sales Region 2.
Egyptian market
The demand in the automotive segment is mainly driven by Egypt, which has a population of 100 million. Households still own a relatively low number of cars there, so aim of ŠKODA AUTO is to bring in new customers. The government is also striving to rejuvenate its vehicle fleet – this year’s plans project 70,000 old cars to be decommissioned; in the next two years, this figure should reach up to 180,000 cars. The government is as well promoting greener powertrains such as CNG.
Other countries
With favorable custom duties to import cars from Europe and a growing SUV segment in all those countries, SKODA has the right assets to continue its performance path.
In Algeria, SKODA has to lead the business restart in a market that has the potential to be the largest in the Region. However, the largest purchasing power in the region is offered by Morocco where cars are owned by the largest percentage of households. ED
Potential in Russia and Southeast Asia
Taking over responsibility for the Russian market comes at a time when the Czech carmaker is successfully growing there. Last year, it delivered 95,000 cars to customers in the country, which makes it the carmaker’s third-largest market overall. The ŠKODA brand is currently the sixth-best-selling brand in Russia. Customers are fond of chrome accessories and require a perfect connection for their smartphones. “Three-quarters of the cars are sold from warehouses; it’s not common for a customer to first configure a car and then wait for it to be produced. On the contrary, when the customer comes, they want the car right away, so the dealers have to be able to react flexibly. The Russian market is challenging, the current political situation and the country’s relations with the world are turbulent, the exchange rate developments are unpredictable, and the country is dependent on oil. All of this poses a lot of challenges for us”, outlines the GRR department’s Ondřej Černý, who is in charge of another promising region: Southeast Asia. Following its successful entry into Singapore and Brunei in 2017, ŠKODA AUTO began examining the possibility of engaging other markets in this region, which has a population of approximately 650 million and where 3.4 million cars are sold annually.

FORCE Program
force program
The Timeless FORCE Program
How satisfied is Board Member Dr. Michael Oeljeklaus with the toolkit to prepare the Production and Logistics department for the future?
Our goal:
Through efficiency and flexibility towards globalisation
Our path:
Simply Clever solutions
Our motivation:
Changing mindsets to secure the future
Two years after the first presentation of the FORCE Program, it is time to evaluate it. Has it met your expectations?
We started working on it back in 2018 by developing the contents of the initiatives with ambitious goals. Forming the working teams and clarifying the owners played a vital role in this respect. Today, we can proudly say that the FORCE Program is our toolkit to boldly tackle the challenges of tomorrow and lead Production and Logistics into the future. The past two years have shown us that we can deal with the topics in a structured and process-oriented way and implement them successfully. We were able to prove this by facing the challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic presented. One success factor throughout this situation has been “securing the future by thinking afresh”.
What was 2020 like, and how successful was the FORCE Program?
The past year has been particularly challenging for us, but not just because of the COVID-19 pandemic. We launched the ENYAQ iV, our first all-electric vehicle based on the MEB platform. With this model, the company has taken a tremendous leap towards eMobility. The relevant targets were also anchored in the FORCE Program, and the progress was regularly reviewed at our meetings. The FORCE Program has proved to be a timeless initiative. Unlike many other long-term plans or strategies (e.g. those of some external companies), it doesn’t need to be changed or adapted. In the end, the numbers speak for themselves. Thanks to the outstanding commitment of our ŠKODA team, we are one of the few automotive brands that have managed to remain in the black in 2020. In the ŠKODA AUTO, the FORCE Program contributed more than EUR 37 million (almost CZK 1 billion) to this positive result.
My sincere
thanks go to
the entire ŠKODA
team. With your
active support,
we are in the
best position to
tackle 2021 and
the years ahead.
Dr. Michael Oeljeklaus
Board Member for Production and Logistics
To what extent have you managed to achieve the goals of the FORCE Program despite the production shutdown in the spring and other restraints?
In my entire business career, I have never experienced anything like what happened last March. From day one, we were working on the conditions under which production could restart. Calling the project “Day X”, we addressed the issue daily, developing hygiene and organisational measures in frequent and trusting cooperation with the KOVO Trade Union. I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone involved. In this way, we were prepared and could not only restart production in an orderly manner but also contain the spread of the pandemic. I’m very proud of the enthusiasm and high motivation of my team throughout this period. This systematic and methodical approach is a cornerstone of our FORCE Program for dealing with critical situations. In addition, we tried to help our colleagues at the plants abroad as much as possible. We also provided protective equipment for hospital staff and police officers at the Pune and Aurangabad sites in India and organised a fundraising campaign for children’s homes.
Regarding India, are some of FORCE Program tools different because of conditions in the region?
Our colleagues in India have understood and already adopted both the content and the added value of the FORCE Program. The Pune and Aurangabad plants are continually working on developing it further and reporting on their successes in regular Skype video conferences. The basic structure of the eight initiatives is the same. But naturally, the specific tasks are adapted to the local conditions. For example, due to the climate, the decision was made to install solar panels on the roofs of the production facilities. In addition to cost-effectiveness, the energy generated also makes a significant contribution to environmental protection. The project was launched in 2019 and is constantly being expanded to cover more areas.
The VW Group has now entrusted ŠKODA AUTO with responsibility for the Russian region. What does implementing the FORCE Program mean for the local conditions?
Assuming responsibility for production in Russia is one of our major challenges for the coming year. First, the FORCE Program must be presented to the colleagues, and our results have to be shown. This will help them appreciate that it is not just a new administrative task but a useful tool; it supports the implementation and achievement of crucial goals. Next, the procedure will be identical to the one here or in India. In collaboration with local colleagues, we are discussing and making decisions regarding the key issues that will be tackled. The local conditions need to be considered, and regional challenges have to be addressed. ED
Topics for 2021
While some goals have to be considered over the long term, such as reducing production costs or reducing the environmental impact, others are evaluated annually to see whether they are relevant for the next period.
Cybersecurity
The Production and Logistics department is facing significant challenges this year. In addition to assuming responsibility for Russia, we are also entrusted with establishing an entirely new commissioning process for the electronics architecture. “The focus here is on our customers, providing them with a vehicle that is both bug-free and protected against hacking. Cybersecurity is an increasingly important factor in automotive production and will fundamentally change part of our assembly process”, explains Dr. Oeljeklaus.
Efficient production
ŠKODA AUTO has to manage production even more efficiently in the future because vehicle production often has to be rescheduled due to the volatile supply of parts and the current shortage of staff.
Strategy 2025
Strategy 2025
The Future Depends on Digitalisation
As part of Strategy 2025, ŠKODA AUTO is setting up digital solutions not only for its products and sales models but also in production and other internal processes
he rapid development of digital and online technologies has changed users’ behaviour and expectations regarding cars and mobility. At the same time, it presents a number of opportunities to make ŠKODA AUTO’s operations more efficient and gain new customers. With Strategy 2025, the carmaker is responding to these trends and paving the way to reach its ambitious goals in the field of digitalisation (see the Goals of the Digitalisation Strategy column). Its current challenges include improving customer experience and satisfaction, making full use of its data and improving cross-functional cooperation to leverage the full potential of digital technologies. Therefore, the carmaker’s Board of Directors decided to establish a brand-new department to help in this regard. Baureihe Connectivity (or Connectivity Product Line) became operational on 1 December and is tasked with all car-related digital services (see the Digital Products as Good as our Cars section).
Projects already in operation
In this way, ŠKODA AUTO is continuing its transformation into a Simply Clever Company for the best mobility solutions and building on steps already taken. Doing so has enabled it to focus on the topics of innovative mobility concepts, car connectivity and internal digitalisation. An important first step to implement this digital strategy was the establishment of the GG – Company Development and Digitalisation department and the ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab. As a source of new innovative solutions, the latter is a main driver for the mobility strategy as well as new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and discovery of other digital business opportunities. Its current portfolio of 48 projects from the Czech Republic, Israel, China and India includes successfully launched services like the peer-to-peer carsharing platform HoppyGo, the BeRider electroscooter-sharing network or Israeli cyber security and AI projects. But digital transformation has become a major topic in all business areas with the digitalisation of internal processes. Two examples from among several digitalisation initiatives are the dProduction project at the Kvasiny plant and the introduction of the IPP project (Integrated Planning Process), which focuses on consistency and transparency across areas by using data and integrating tools throughout the planning process. Another step leading to a wider use of data analysis in ŠKODA AUTO is the deployment of Power BI. ED
Goals of the Digitalisation Strategy
Complete connection of cars with the online world and the ecosystem of digital products and services
New digital business models and mobility services (e.g. car sharing)
Improvement of the user experience in all the products on offer
Increased efficiency by digitalising internal operations and processes
Involvement of artificial intelligence in all the major products and services
Digital Products as Good as our Cars
The new GX – Connectivity Product Line department, which will cover the development of digital services for the carmaker’s customers, was established on 1 December and is headed by Sebastian Lasek.
What is the main task of the new department?
Our main task is to develop online services for connected cars and bring them to the customer. We have to focus more on the ease of use of our digital services and how we communicate those functions. We are still too slow in adapting to the market as our development cycle takes too long. The change in the organisational form represents an ideal opportunity to optimise our way of working together and implementing agile processes. We can reduce our internal project costs, speed up development and improve the quality of our projects. In the short to medium term, we have to improve the appeal of our portfolio of services and definitely also their reliability.
Which of ŠKODA AUTO’s digitalisation projects do you consider the most successful and would you like to follow up on?
Years ago, I was proud of the early stages of connectivity with the KODIAQ model. However, the view of what we perceive as success is gradually changing as we constantly try to take things to the next level. In the field of digitalisation, we are running several promising projects, and I’m very pleased, for example, that ŠKODA AUTO is developing its own infotainment web applications and doesn’t simply use those from the Group. On behalf of the VW Group, we are also in charge of supplying software for services based on the car’s location or voice control applications for home devices. However, my job is not to be satisfied; I have to push for improvement all the time. We still have a lot of work to do.
In which direction should the carmaker be heading in the digital field?
ŠKODA AUTO must be in the world of digital products what it is as a brand in the world of cars – always bringing something extra, offering Simply Clever solutions, breaking down impractical functions and improving the current functionality to excite its customers. People will only use products on a daily basis if they’re satisfied with them, and active use is extremely important to our digital portfolio.
Which upcoming products are you looking forward to the most?
I can’t wait to drive the ENYAQ iV. And I don’t just mean the great car but the entire package. The next two connectivity functionality packages will be launched at the beginning and the end of 2021. I’m also looking forward to the development of our infotainment web applications. For the first time, we can evaluate customer behaviour in depth and examine sensor data to improve the customer experience and, thanks to that, improve user experience and update car functionality in a matter of weeks. My ambition is not only to talk about things but also to make them happen. ED
Think Digitally
ŠKODA Space News
The employee portal is constantly expanding its offer and now includes an archive of publications, including ŠKODA Mobil
ast year, ŠKODA Space became a safe base containing the most important work tools, processes and information. It is a living organism that constantly responds to current trends.
Virtual organisational units
The first significant added function is news and labels of the areas that fall under the individual members of the Board of Directors and the first management level (i.e. one-letter and two-letter levels). Employees can get to the section of the area to which they belong by clicking on the label below the main message on the ŠKODA Space homepage. For example, those from car production will see “News P” and “News PF” labels. Editors appointed by the respective areas’ secretariats can edit the sections and publish news that is relevant to the specific users (e.g. personnel changes, newsletters, useful links etc.). “With further development, we expect user feedback so that we can meet expectations. Our vision is for the portal to display virtual organisational units or to serve as a virtual office for employees”, outlines Martin Šedivý from the SB/4 – Digitalisation and system support HR department.
Source of information
The online archive will serve those who need to immerse themselves in the carmaker’s history. Here they can find historical photographs and brochures, as well as older editions of ŠKODA Mobil and its predecessor, the Ventil newspaper, dating back to 1946. Editions before 2002 are scanned as PDF files with a text layer so that the text can be copied. A TIFF version is also available, which makes it possible to work with the photos in excellent quality. Files published after 2002 are of even higher quality. They can easily be searched in the archive and downloaded. ED
What you can find in the digital archive
In addition to older editions of the ŠKODA Mobil and Ventil newspapers, you can also find a number of interesting materials, such as historical car drawings, L&K and Škoda Works shares, guestbook entries and unique photographs from visits.
A bridge between IT and business
At the beginning of the year, LeanIX, a new system used by the VW Group, was launched. It is a tool for Enterprise Architecture Management that aims to provide an understanding of all the various elements that make up an organisation and how these elements are interrelated. It enables the organisation to reach its current and future goals effectively. LeanIX works in a web browser environment and offers the user information about the application and technology portfolio across the Group. Thus, the user gets an overview of which applications are used, how they are used and what their life cycle is. LeanIX helps management to find answers to questions regarding which applications to invest in and which ones, on the contrary, are no longer worth maintaining, or where there are any gaps or overlaps. A hypothetical example might be the transition to a cloud solution for a particular process. In this case, LeanIX will help you decide which applications are suitable to be moved to the cloud and which ones are not. The tool deployment is still fresh, but activities are already underway in the areas of Production and Logistics, Finance and IT. ED

Important messages without delay
The carmaker has started using its own DataSMS application to send important SMS messages, such as verification codes for logging into the ŠKODA Space or for internal bulk communications. These messages inform about current measures against coronavirus at the plants. The application enables these messages to be delivered to your phone without delay, while mass-sent classic SMS messages could otherwise be delayed by several hours. Those of you who were assigned company phones or have BYOD devices (Bring Your Own Device – private telephones used for business purposes) have the application installed automatically. However, you have to activate the reception of data messages directly in the DataSMS application. When opening the application the first time, you simply agree to the necessary settings; in the final step, you will be prompted to send an activation SMS. After sending it, you will be subscribed to messages via the DataSMS application. If the application is not available (e.g. because the mobile phone does not have access to the Internet), the system will send you a standard SMS paid for by ŠKODA AUTO. The development of DataSMS was carried out by the FIO/3 and FIV departments with the support of the SVP (ŠKODA Verbesserungsprozess) team. The main goal was to improve mass communication with employees but also to reduce company costs. ED

The Stories of Integrity
The Stories of Integrity
My work has purpose
I enjoy building bridges that connect the experience of the Scout movement with the needs of contemporary society, says Miloš Říha
iloš fulfilled his life’s dream seven years ago. At the time, he was busy establishing the Scout Institute (Skautský institut), which he still leads as director. “We started from scratch, and in recent years, we’ve organised hundreds of educational events a month throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The team from the Scout Institute helps young people to find their way in an ever-changing world. We base our work on the values of the Scout movement, which are still relevant even after 100 years of existence – maybe even more so than before”, says Miloš. This abstract idea led to a large and stable institution with a wide reach. Several hundred thousand people in the Czech Republic who went through the scout experience are still alive today, which is why this organisation still has immense human strength.
I see a lot of clever people around me. I respect them precisely for their personal integrity and the attitudes they stand for.
While Miloš’s work currently involves more duties in the office than in nature with the sections, it certainly isn’t lacking for meaning. “For me, leading means having a huge commitment to the people I work with. And what am I actually doing? I try not to interfere and always be in the right place if it’s necessary to solve a problem and make a decision.” The key to his work is the fact that the scout leads his members with a strong will, determination and responsibility in the spirit of the motto: be prepared. “A scout should have the courage to be active, even in situations where others fall short, and scouting teaches you that. The best training is to start setting clear goals and not to dodge them. The joy of being able to meet your responsibility to yourself is huge”, says Miloš.
He is optimistic about integrity in society. He has many clever people around him whom he respects precisely for their personal integrity and attitudes. “We’ve lived in a free society for the past 30 years after the fall of totalitarianism. It’s up to us to decide whether democracy survives and develops further. History is made up of individuals, and I believe that there are enough capable people in the Czech Republic that we don’t have to worry about the future”, he adds. ED

Act honestly and openly
The seventh OPEN TALK discussion about the Group’s principles was held online again
n Wednesday, 20 January, you could watch another in a series of meetings that take place with a live broadcast from the ŠKODA Museum premises. The topic was security measures. More than 80 employees of ŠKODA AUTO and its subsidiaries tuned in to watch. This time, the discussion centred on Group Essential II: “We are honest and speak up when something is wrong.” Topics relating to this principle were discussed by the CEO Thomas Schäfer, as well as Dr. Guido Haak, who is the head of PM – Product Strategy and Modular Toolkit, Jens Katemann, who leads GK – Communications, and Andre Wehner, the head of GG – Company Development and Digitalization. Alois Kauer, the head of the ŠKODA Academy, also joined the discussion. ED
What interested you the most
In addition to future developments and inquiries about ŠKODA AUTO’s activities, including its withdrawal as sponsor of the Ice Hockey World Championship if it took place in Belarus, employees asked about current topics related to diversity and corporate culture.
Communication tools
Do you expect the introduction of such a communication channel between employees and management that would make it possible to discuss topics directly, regardless of the hierarchy in the company?
Have you considered adding the possibility of commenting on and evaluating articles on ŠKODA Space?
Impact of COVID-19 on corporate culture changes
Do you know how the current situation with the increase in work from home and remotely has affected the corporate culture at ŠKODA AUTO?
Did the increase in digitisation in everyday tasks during a pandemic affect employees’ openness?
Generation Z
There is talk of the transformation of the industrial into the digital age, where, with the advent of Generation Z (people born between the mid-1990s and 2012), so-called self-governing teams would be operating. Is the carmaker ready for this change?
You will find the answers to these questions in a video that you can watch in the ŠKODA Academy Media Library.

Ročník 2022
Ročník 2023
Success in times of challenges
In mid-November, around 300 managers gathered at the Škoda Museum for a two-day meeting with the top management of the MMK. The opening session was addressed by Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, and Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union. The theme of transformation guided the entire event, which included seminars, discussions and updates from various areas of the carmaker.
Compact but still spacious
The Kylaq, Škoda’s latest and smallest model, was unveiled in November. Measuring less than 4 metres in length, it targets the popular Indian market segment, with prices starting from CZK 220,000. The Kylaq introduces the new Modern Solid design language to India, along with the largest boot in its class and a wide range of equipment focused on safety, including six airbags.
IVET 2024 Innovation Fair
The 8th edition of IVET showcased 36 innovation themes, underscoring Škoda Auto’s commitment to practical advancements. New was a section dedicated to the Indian market and contributions from Group colleagues. The event also featured the presentation of the Elroq. From Simply Clever solutions to technical breakthroughs, the fair continued the tradition of innovations designed with customers in mind.
Chronicle of 2024
In 2024, Škoda Auto continued to launch new models while modernising its bestsellers. The carmaker also adopted a new design language, opened the Laurin & Klement Kampus, supported numerous charitable and sustainable projects, achieved many successes and celebrated several important anniversaries. Discover the highlights from the past year in this year’s Chronicle.
Kronika roku 2024
V roce 2024 Škoda Auto pokračovala v uvádění nových modelů a také v modernizaci bestsellerů. Automobilka navíc přešla na nový designový jazyk Modern Solid, otevřela Laurin & Klement Kampus, podpořila nespočet dobročinných i udržitelných projektů, dosáhla mnoha úspěchů a oslavila několik významných výročí. To nejdůležitější z právě končícího roku se dočtete v letošní kronice.
Launching a new era in India
Four metres is a critical threshold in the Indian automobile market and its segment with this maximum length accounts for nearly 30%. Škoda Auto is entering this segment with the new compact SUV, the Kylaq, which is developed and manufactured in India specifically to cater to the preferences of local customers. This launch follows the earlier introductions of the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan.
Conquering the French market
More than half a million visitors flocked to the Paris Motor Show in October, where global carmakers were in attendance. The Škoda Auto stand featured the new electric Elroq, which garnered much attention. Other cars from Škoda’s portfolio were also on display, including a specially modified fourth-generation Superb for the Tour de France race director and the Fabia RS Rally2 competition special.
Reducing software complexity
The second of the Brand Group Core’s six strategic packages is titled Reducing Complexity and focuses primarily on software. The increasing number of drives and assistance systems and the integration of other vehicle functions have led to a complex array of software variants. The aim of reducing the number of software variants is to decrease costs and enhance cybersecurity.
A look inside the battery
The new tomography centre in Hall M6 allows for non-destructive testing of the quality of MEB’s electric platform batteries. Škoda Auto inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility in June this year, and there may not be another facility like it in any other carmaker. Historically, the industry has employed computed tomography technology, or CT scanning, mainly for smaller parts.
Pohled do útrob baterie
