ŠKODA AUTO Czech Republic has strengthened its staff
At a time of great challenges for the automotive market, a major turnover in management positions stabilizes ŠKODA’s sales organization in the Czech market. The new head of VTV – Sales in the Czech Republic is Tomáš Duchoň, who has gained experience in his managerial positions in the Czech Republic and abroad during his 18 years at ŠKODA AUTO. Jan Pícha, the previous Head of Sales, has been promoted to the position of Head of VTS – Services in the Czech Republic. This position was previously held by Karel Starý, who has now taken over the management of VA2 – After Sales Region 2 Department at the carmaker’s headquarters.
Employer of the decade
ŠKODA AUTO has defended its victory in the Employer of the decade poll, which it won for the first time in 2012. The award was presented at the end of the 20th anniversary ceremony of the Employer of the Year competition. The company has been regularly ranked at the top and this year it came second in the category of companies with more than 5,000 employees. For the last ten years, the assessment has been carried out using PwC’s globally recognised Saratoga methodology, which gives the current award a high level of professional credibility.

The production of door panels is in full swing
As of June 1, the production of door panels for the OCTAVIA model was successfully resumed at full capacity in Mladá Boleslav, which was disrupted by a fire at the ŠKODA AUTO supplier’s premises at the end of January. It only took 18 weeks to resolve the critical situation. Earlier, the joint team of the carmaker and Grupo Antolin managed to launch a replacement production of door panels in Turnov.
ŠKODA cars heading to Ukraine again
The carmaker resumed deliveries to its business partner Eurocar’s plant in Solomonov, Ukraine. The cars are heading there in the SKD and are then assembled in Ukraine. In the initial phase, ŠKODA AUTO will deliver 80 KODIAQ and KAROQ cars there. Any increase in production volumes will depend on the development of the war situation.

Children design a car for the Clowndoctors
Two decades of partnership between the Clowndoctors organisation (Zdravotní klaun) and ŠKODA AUTO will be commemorated this year with the Car for the Clowndoctors contest. “At the end of September, we are going to hand over two ENYAQ COUPÉ iV cars to the Clowndoctors to support their important work. I’m particularly excited about the idea of getting children in hospitals and social care facilities actively involved in designing the look of the cars so they can have some fun,” says Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture. The competition is ongoing until the end of July and aims to raise the profile of the important mission of the Clowndoctors. In August, two winning designs will emerge from the 20 finalists and will appear on the cars in September.
Children’s competition entries can be sent to the end of July via the website.

Three Questions for Klaus Zellmer
New CEO of ŠKODA AUTO will take office on 1 July
What are your goals for your first hundred days and beyond as CEO of ŠKODA AUTO?
ŠKODA is a proud and clever brand with strong roots, and I’m really looking forward to taking it into the future together with the Board team and all Škodians! In the first weeks, I want to get to know each site and department. I also want to talk to Škodians from all areas and hierarchies as well as dealers and customers, of course. On my previous visits, I already felt the great team spirit, energy and positive attitude that drives this company forward! You did an amazing job in the last two years despite the tremendous difficulties due to the pandemic, semiconductor shortage and the war in Ukraine. Now it’s all about boosting production to full capacity and doing everything we can to ensure that our customers receive their new ŠKODA cars as fast as possible. ŠKODA AUTO’s business is robust, and with the NEXT LEVEL – ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030, we have a strong foundation for this decade of transformation. It will be our task to build the house on it alongside our social partner KOVO Union and its chairman Jaroslav Povšík! My ultimate goal: to steer the company successfully through the following years, so that all Škodians have a safe job not only today but also tomorrow.
My ultimate goal: To steer the company successfully through the next years, so that all Škodians have a safe job not only today but also tomorrow.
Which ŠKODA model do you consider the most important, and why?
The ŠKODA ENYAQ iV and the ENYAQ COUPÉ iV point to ŠKODA’s future in terms of electrification, digitalisation and sustainable materials. And what’s equally important, is that they carry the ŠKODA DNA that our customers love: easy handling, unique design and spaciousness, and Simply Clever ideas. At the same time, our successful models with internal combustion engines like the new FABIA, the updated KAROQ and our all-time bestseller, the OCTAVIA, will remain important to us in the future, too. In the coming years, our model portfolio will offer an attractive and affordable mix of efficient internal combustion engine and all-electric models that perfectly meet the needs of our customers.
What should Škodians know about you?
I specialised early on in automotive economics and corporate management, and I can look back on 25 exciting years within the VW Group. I’m a team player, and I like to have direct contact with colleagues. Apart from the business, I’m married and a proud father of an almost 15-year-old daughter. Since my childhood, I’ve been an avid car fan and mechanic! In my youth, I spent more time under cars than in them. At the moment, I’m on the lookout for a ŠKODA classic, as I immediately fell in love with the brand’s classic cars after my first visit to the ŠKODA Museum. ŠKODA AUTO’s rich history really impresses me, just mention the POPULAR MONTE CARLO or the FELICIA convertible. Besides my love of cars, I like running and art. I can’t wait to explore the Czech Republic’s rich culture, with all its museums, galleries, and theatres. ED

ŠKODA AFRIQ
The Secondary Vocational School of Engineering students have produced their eighth Azubi Car, this time a special car that plays on a racing note
he newest car from the students of the ŠKODA AUTO Vocational School of Mechanical Engineering (SOUs) is called AFRIQ and looks like it could take off immediately for the start of the famous Dakar Rally. The model is based on the KAMIQ urban SUV, but with extensive modifications, including an incorporated powertrain from the OCTAVIA, the students have turned it into a racing special with a unique atmosphere.
Twenty-five students of SOUs, a part of the ŠKODA Academy, have transformed the KAMIQ beyond recognition. Inspired by racing cars, ŠKODA Motorsport experts helped them with some parts from the FABIA Rally2 evo. Students then fine-tuned the final look in a typical combination of white, green, and black with the help of experts from ŠKODA Design. One of the functional and design specialities of the car is the welded second pair of doors, so the AFRIQ only has doors for the driver and passenger. The omission of the rear doors has given the car a more dramatic look, which is in the spirit of the Dakar specials. “The AFRIQ is an impressive result of our future employees’ enormous creativity and great talent. SOUs prepares them well for their future careers in the automotive industry, where they have the opportunity to apply and deepen their acquired knowledge in practice in the early stages of their hands-on training,” says Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture.
I admire the great ability of our students to think innovatively and in the spirit of sustainability. I am convinced that with such motivated reinforcements,we are in an excellent position to co-create the future of ŠKODA and successfully lead it through the transformation.
Maren Gräf
Board Member for People & Culture
This time, the car has been in the works since the autumn of 2020, and the student team completed it this January. Compared to seven previous student models, the work on the AFRIQ model took longer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which often made it impossible to physically work on the car. Especially in the initial stages, our students had to solve all the steps online. „This student car was created with the great support of the vocational training teachers, who deserve our enormous thanks for this,” says Jaromír Bátora, vocational education coordinator of the SEB – Vocational School.
Production of the car itself took 2,000 hours of work. Our students not only had to properly modify the body of the KAMIQ, but also to significantly cut down the original version (the weight of the special is only 1,350 kg), weld in a special tubular protective frame, prepare anchor points, modify the floor and fit it with all the equipment. The AFRIQ has a 4×4 drive, seven-speed DSG gearbox, and 2.0 TSI engine, elements from the significantly bigger OCTAVIA. The car also has special outdoor navigation and several features from racing specials. The students also had sustainability in mind, as evidenced by the special Watergen drinking water generator (more on page 6).
More than just a rally
Experts from the ŠKODA Motorsport team also helped with the project. They passed on their technical knowledge to their students and provided them with equipment for building the car, which came from the FABIA Rally2 evo – for example, additional headlights, ventilation flap, quick-release bonnet flaps, and the fifth door with an integrated spoiler. Inside, too, a number of features come from the competition special, such as the two cameras with microphones, steering wheel, dashboard, six-point seat belts, and special racing seats.
In addition, the AFRIQ serves as a reminder of the responsibility of people and companies for climate change. In particular, it draws attention to water shortages in Africa or India. The carmaker’s focus on these regions was the reason for installing the original Watergen drinking water generator in the car. As both in Africa and India access to truly clean drinking water is often not a given, the AFRIQ shows one possible solution while emphasizing sustainability. Drinking water produced by generators at the point of consumption saves, among other things, a huge amount of plastic bottles, of which only 40% are recycled worldwide.
In June, five SOUs students presented the AFRIQ model Maren Gräf.
New ALUMNi community
Thanks to excellent cooperation between the carmaker and students, a new project called ALUMNi has come into being, whose patrons are Alois Kauer, Head of SE – ŠKODA Academy, and Michal Hrabánek, Head of EM – ŠKODA Motorsport. The first joint event took place on 25 May in Vrchlabí, where the best graduates of SOUs who have received the company’s Best Apprentice Award over the past ten years gathered. “I am pleased that the graduates showed that we share a common goal, namely to promote technical education and strengthen its importance in recruiting students. The number of top graduates shows that girls and women also have open doors in technical fields,” emphasised A. Kauer at the beginning of the meeting.
On site, the graduates got to know all the models of the successful Azubi Car project, including the latest competition special, and also got a glimpse behind the scenes of the ŠKODA Motorsport team. “It is great to see so many enthusiastic young people who realise that even in the age of digital technology, it is important to meet in person and discuss things together. I am pleased that our cooperation with the ŠKODA Academy continues to develop and I wish the ALUMNi project a good start,” said M. Hrabánek. ED

They make water from air
The drinking water generator is a unique feature of the AFRIQ car
he SOUs students built a Watergen drinking water generator into the AFRIQ car, which produces water from humidity in the air (see Watergen in a nutshell). They worked with several experts on the project. “I discovered this technology during my time at the ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab innovation centre in Israel. At a time when we were looking for ways to test and deploy the technology in ŠKODA vehicles, I initiated the idea of using it in the AFRIQ,” says Jakub Šanda, expert coordinator of the GSC – Corporate Strategy and Innovation Management unit.
Thanks to Watergen technology, our students showed that cars with clever ideas can be good for the environment.
The opportunity to have the Watergen prototype manufactured, installed and tested directly in the car came about when the AFRIQ was being developed. The logistically and technically challenging solution was running simultaneously on two continents and depended on the flawless collaboration of all involved. “Experts from Aftersales and Technical Development also helped us with the project, evaluating the project and specifying its possible applications,” says Ludmila Prokopcova from DigiLab. It was she, together with ŠKODA Academy and Watergen, who found a way to install the technology in the car. In addition to the support of the apprentices, the help of InnoTeam, which decided to co-finance the prototype through its innovation project support programme, was also crucial.
“We tested Watergen in practice in the Czech climate. We are satisfied with the results, since it worked without any problems and the water quality passed the tests of an independent laboratory, and we want to continue looking for ways to offer it to regular customers in the future, for example as an accessory,” says Ctibor Jappel of ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab. “Of course, not in the form of a prototype, as it is now built into the AFRIQ,” adds Jappel. In fact, the Watergen was only installed by the students as a final addition to the car after all the other parts and components had been approved, so as not to delay the project. Under normal circumstances, the solution could be more compact and almost invisible to the customer.
Watergen in a nutshell
In the water generation unit, a filter draws in air and removes dust and dirt. The already cleaned air passes through a GENius heat exchanger, where it cools and condenses into water. This continues to the cascade filter unit where it is purified and mineralised. During this process, UV light destroys microorganisms and breaks down harmful chemicals. The water is then stored in a nine-litre tank in the car, where it circulates continuously. It is tapped into the front of the car by the passenger by touching the digital display. Watergen produces up to 20 litres of drinking water per day in the version fitted to the AFRIQ and operates at temperatures from 15 °C and humidity of at least 20%. ED
The Watergen system is covered in the next episode of the SIMPLY CLEVER PODCAST 2.0, which you can find in your favourite players or here.
Comments on the technology

At ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab Israel, she leads the area of technology scouting and business development
Together with the team in Tel Aviv, I select and validate interesting technologies at all stages of development. We completed the Watergen project for the AFRIQ in a very short time – the prototype was built in the Tel Aviv lab in about four weeks. Subsequent installation in the car in Mladá Boleslav and functional testing took less than four days.

Unique concept of future cars
The ideas of art students from Slovakia impressed the ŠKODA Design leaders
he students from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (VŠVU) have completed their year-long collaboration with the ED – ŠKODA Design team in Bezděčín. Their task was to design the cars of the future according to their own ideas. “We wanted to take advantage of the novel students’ perspective, their innovative ideas and their imagination in the design process. They are an incredible source of inspiration for us. They are looking for new ways to evolve and push design in the context of the digital environment,” explained Dalibor Pantůček, designer from the EDE/1 – Design Exterior – Team 1. Štefan Klein, Head of the Transport Design Studio at VŠVU, appreciated that this is a great experience that the students will use in their future careers. Oliver Stefani, Head of the ED Department, stressed that he sees the project as another step towards exploring new possibilities and as a collaboration that he values.
This was followed by twelve student presentations on the Analog vs. digital topic. Everyone imprinted their worldview and their personality on it, thus creating unique models. The students explained what inspired them in their creation, and how they developed the model until they arrived at the 3D representation and animation. Apart from Stefani, the ED team was represented by Karl Neuhold, Head of EDE – Design Exterior Department, and Peter Olah, Head of EDI – Design Interior, Colour, and Trim Department. They provided immediate feedback to the students. They evaluated their ideas and workmanship, asked about the individual details, etc. For example, Natalia Žáková presented a City Box that could be used to transport people in the city so that it would not be overcrowded with cars. In conclusion, Stefani highlighted not only the excellent quality of the works, but also the courage of the students to present in English. He also encouraged those who were nervous during the presentation. Now the ED Department will choose one or two students to invite for internship. RED

The carmaker’s new headquarters is already growing
Employees will move into the Laurin & Klement kampus from the existing 11 locations across Mladá Boleslav
long the Václav Klement Avenue at Gate 11 of the main production plant and opposite the former ŠKODA AUTO management building, busy construction is already underway. The construction of the Laurin & Klement Kampus, the carmaker’s future headquarters, is expected to be completed there in the second half of 2023. The complex of four five-storey blocks will cover an area of 44,000 square meters. It will provide office space for around 1,700 employees, who will move there from the administrative offices the carmaker rents throughout Mladá Boleslav. The administrative centre will also include a 400-seat restaurant and underground garage for 300 cars. The attractive office space will be based on the modern New Work concept (more about it in ŠKODA Mobil 2/2022) and will provide individual solutions to the requirements for an optimal working environment.
Clever green solutions
In addition to the operational savings brought about by the consolidation of the office space, the building will also feature a number of environmentally friendly solutions. “For example, sustainable lightweight Cobiax ceiling modules will be used during the construction, which will help reduce the overall weight of the concrete and thus reduce the carbon footprint,” explains Meno Requardt, Managing Director of Volkswagen Immobilien. By 2025, ŠKODA AUTO will provide a CO2-neutral energy supply for the new building by switching to biomass, with additional energy supplied by photovoltaic panels. The use of LED technology and intelligent light sensors will reduce the energy required for lighting by half, compared to conventional fluorescent lamps. High-efficiency air conditioning will cool the office space at night, while air conditioning systems will achieve up to 80 percent energy recovery efficiency. Roller shutters will effectively shield from sunlight, reducing the cooling load by 30 percent. There will also be a central rainwater catchment tank, which, after treatment with a filtration system, will be used, for example, for irrigating green areas. (Read more about rainwater management in Mladá Boleslav on page 16.). The Laurin & Klement Kampus is aiming for the gold certificate of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für nachhaltiges Bauen (DGNB), which is the global benchmark for clearly defined standards in sustainable construction. ED
Cornerstone
The ground-breaking ceremony for the Laurin & Klement Kampus took place on 30 May. It was attended by Meno Requardt, Managing Director of Volkswagen Immobilien, Josef Zmrhal, Vice-Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union, Karsten Schnake, Board Member for Purchasing, Michael Oeljeklaus, Board Member for Production and Logistics, Radka Čihulková, Head of the BAR – Real Estate Asset and Travel Management Department, and Hardy Brennecke, Managing Director of Volkswagen Immobilien.

AWARD FOR THE LOWEST ACCIDENT RATE
The Vrchlabí plant scored points in the next year of the competition
n 25 May, the 26th presentation of the cup and the traditional financial awards in the competition for the lowest accident rate for 2021 took place at the Vrchlabí plant, with the participation of ŠKODA AUTO management and the KOVO Trade Union.
The first place went to the PKD – Transmission DQ Department from Vrchlabí. Management of the carmaker gave the cup and the prize of CZK 600,000 to the head of the department Ivan Slimák. The second place went to the PSW – Tool Production Department, represented by its Head Jakub Selucký, who received the prize of CZK 300,000. The prize for third place went to the PF1-K – Welding Plant MB I Department represented by its Head Jaroslav Petrouš, who won the prize of CZK 100,000. The PKG – Foundry and Forge Department led by David Kvapil was named the Leap of the Year. As his department achieved the greatest improvement in the accident rate last year, it also received a financial bonus of CZK 100,000. The money prizes will be used by the awarded departments to improve their occupational safety, working environment, health protection, and ergonomics. These are among ŠKODA AUTO’s top priorities.
Of the 14 competing departments, four of them had no incapacitating accidents in 2021, and only minor injuries were recorded. Compared to 2020, when the carmaker recorded a total of 71 incapacitating work injuries, the number of injuries in 2021 was reduced to 46. Only in 2015 did the carmaker record fewer injuries (42). Index 1, which is the number of incapacitating injuries per million hours worked, improved significantly to 0.9 in 2021, its best-ever injury rate. This excellent result, however, was achieved in difficult times, when all ŠKODA AUTO employees had to comply with all the measures to prevent COVID-19 disease. “Our deserved thanks therefore go especially to all the employees who, through their responsible behaviour and compliance with safety regulations, are making a steady contribution to the low accident rate at ŠKODA AUTO,” says Lucie Cedrychová, the specialist occupational safety coordinator from the PSU – Environmental and Work Protection Department. DEVELOPMENT OF FOREMEN
A new development programme that both teaches and entertains
KODA Academy has expanded its standard course offering for our forewomen and foremen a new form of its Let us develop together training programme. The programme for the PF forewomen and foremen was initiated by Marek Jancák, Head of the PF – Car Production Department.
The goal of the new programme is to promote an innovative approach, diversity and agility, as well as the art of working with a change of mindset. “The hard work to offer our foremen and forewomen a fresh perspective on new challenges and trends has paid off. The different perspective and the opportunity to reflect on one’s health, both physical and especially mental, was very well received. The topics are led by experienced coaches and subject matter experts. They have been gaining personal experience for years and passing it on in this way,” say Ladislava Hladíková and Jiří Procházka, specialists of the SE/2 – Competence Development and Management Programmes Department.
Three interesting sites
The content of the course builds on the most requested topics that emerged from the Cultural Day for Foremen held at the end of last year. Its goal was to continuously support and motivate forewomen and foremen in expanding their knowledge of various competences. The Let us Develop Together programme therefore offers three interesting topics in one day. Participation in the escape game, an escape game that encourages innovation and creativity of the participants, thinking in context and strategic thinking. It also offers mental health support that shows forewomen and foremen directions on how to treat themselves and work for the sustainable energy these employees need in their daily complex work. The third theme is collaboration, the importance, effectiveness, and obstacles of which all the employees across the department are aware of, because without it the individual teams and departments just would not work. Through these three sites, at which the course participants rotate at regular intervals, they have the opportunity to discuss and share their own experiences and views and learn from their colleagues. It is therefore one example of effective adult learning through peer interaction. The informal and pleasant atmosphere of the courses is also enhanced by the Lean Centre’s teaching facilities and the professional approach of the colleagues of the PSI – Industrial Engineering Department. This creates ideal conditions for the implementation of the entire course, which allows for effective work in small groups. ED

How seat belts work
Overview of the terms and technologies used in the VW Group’s seat belts
e take it for granted to get into the car and fasten our seat belts. But what is behind this seemingly simple technology and where is its development heading? In cooperation with the EKS/3 – Side Airbags, Belts and Parts Management Department, we took a closer look at this technology. The basic technology is the same in every ŠKODA and other VW Group brand cars, with some additional features added to the higher models.
The reel is the foundation
The belt component, also called the tensioner, is the key component in the whole system. It contains a force limiter. The force limiter uses the principle of a torsion bar which, by its permanent deformation, reduces the force of the seat belt on the occupants from a certain limit, and the locking mechanism ensures that the belts lock when needed. The mechanism is activated by two independent systems that use the inertia of the movable weight, depending on the speed of unwinding of the belt (if you pull the belt rapidly, it will stop unwinding) and on information about your car’s acceleration, deceleration or inclination.
Depending on the car class and export territory, the reels also include a pyrotechnic tensioner to irreversibly tighten the belt during an accident. The current best equipment features a reel and an electric reversible retractor, i.e. electric motor. “The retractors are used to reverse-wind the belt onto the spool. The belt then comes down more firmly on the body, which distributes the load more evenly and reduces injuries,” explains Miroslav Kučera, coordinator of the EKS/3 Department. This is a preventive safety feature that prepares the car and its passengers for a potential collision based on data from the ESC (Electronic Stability Control, ed.), the airbag control unit and other sensors. In a critical situation, this system switches on the electric motor and pre-tensions (dovetails) the seat belt strap before the accident.
The seat belts can withstand loads of over 2.5 tonnes
The belt itself plays a key role in the entire system. The belt is usually made of polyester fabric, but varies in colour, stitching, edge finish, and thickness. “The belts used in the VW Group feature five design longitudinal belts and can withstand loads of over 2.5 tonnes. Thanks to the height adjustment located at the top of the B-pillar, the belt routing can be correctly adjusted to the driver’s height, thus reducing the strain on the passengers’ bodies,” adds Kučera. This mechanism also comes in several versions: mechanical or electric, with different numbers of positions or different ways of anchoring to the body.
A metal buckle is attached to the belt and is used to lock it into the lock. This includes sensors that alert the driver when he or she is not buckled in, which is currently required by legislation in most countries. The seat belt is mounted on the end bracket, which is used to secure the free end of the belt to the car body or seat structure. For example, today, front seat belt tensioners are usually used with pyrotechnics, which do essentially the same thing as the belt reels. Here, however, the belt is tightened by about 100 mm using a steel cable. ED
History and future
The seat belt was originally developed in aviation: British aeronautical engineer George Cayley came up with the idea in the 19th century. The automotive industry first worked with the five-point belt, invented in 1903 by Louis Renault. The currently known three-point belt was developed by Nils Bohlin, who is credited as its inventor, for the Volvo car company. The company was also the first to include it as standard equipment in 1959. The first ŠKODA with seat belts was the 1000 MB from 1964, which offered this innovation only in the front and initially only as an accessory for the Czechoslovak market. In the then Czechoslovakia, seat belts became mandatory in the 1970s, initially only on the front seats, outside the municipality and with the exception of some Soviet cars. And the future? With the advent of interior variability and the imminent arrival of autonomous driving, we can expect changes in this respect as well. Seat belt attachments will be moved from the body directly into the seats, so that even when they are turned, the restraint function is maintained.

FABIA RS RALLY2:
BEAUTY OR BEAST?ŠKODA Motorsport team unveiled the successor to the competition special, based on the fourth-generation FABIA
he FABIA Rally2 evo competition special has been the most successful car in its category in recent years. After its extensive testing on asphalt, gravel and snow and ice, its successor – FABIA RS Rally2 is here. Powered by a new engine, it boasts a long list of significant improvements in handling, electronics, stability, safety and much more. “I am proud of the entire ŠKODA Motorsport team, which has pursued this goal with great dedication. I would also like to thank my colleagues in the production car development department, who have provided us with a great foundation for the FABIA RS Rally2 with the fourth-generation FABIA,” said Michal Hrabánek, ŠKODA Motorsport Team Principal. So, what makes the new car interesting?
214 kW
Is the power output of the new engine of the competition special, which is based on the 2.0 TSI engine of the EA888 family.
430 Nm
Is the maximum torque transmitted to all the four wheels by a sequential five-speed gearbox and two differentials.
More efficient engine
International Automobile Federation (FIA) regulations require a 1.6-litre turbocharged power unit for Rally2 cars, based on a stock engine. The ŠKODA Motorsport team used as a basis the 2.0 TSI power unit from the EA888 engine family, which is also found under the bonnet of the RS production cars. The newly developed engine features an improved combustion process and exhaust system, compared to the previous generation, as well as new control software. A new feature is a hydraulically operated intermediate clutch that comes into play when the handbrake is applied. This solution is used in rallying to direct the car into turns more quickly.
82.5 l
Of petrol is held by a fuel tank made of impact-resistant rubber.
35.8 m
Of tubes form a steel cage that protects the crew of the FABIA RS Rally2.
Greater stability
The car’s handling has been improved by a chassis derived from the current FABIA. It is wider and has a longer wheelbase, allowing engineers to design new chassis kinematics. This makes the FABIA RS Rally2 a little quieter and more stable in the rear. However, the chassis has also received further improvements based on their experience with the previous model – the shock absorbers have a longer stroke to reduce friction, the MacPherson strut suspension is firmer, differential functionality has been improved, and the gearbox shifting efficiency has improved as well.
Easy control
Inside the FABIA RS Rally2 its crew will find an enlarged main display, where they can also play videos and intuitively control settings during the rally. The interior features a new central control panel with a touchscreen and integrated intercom control. The driver can access numerous functions directly via buttons on the steering wheel. There is also a start button, which the driver can quickly reach, should the engine accidentally stop.
We paid even more attention to aerodynamics. Our main goal was to achieve more downforce for greater cornering speeds at turns.
Lukáš Vojík
WLTP model construction coordinator in the EBW – Aerodynamics Department
Double the amount of downforce
The ŠKODA Motorsport experts have taken advantage of the fact that the fourth-generation FABIA has the lowest air resistance coefficient in its class. Thanks to their meticulous attention to detail, the FABIA RS Rally2’s downforce value has almost doubled, compared to its successful predecessor. The greater downforce is a great advantage, enabling greater speeds at turns. In addition to the wider front and rear wings, the newly developed rear wing increases downforce as well.
Greater crew protection
Rally2’s safety equipment exceeds the stringent FIA regulations. It is based on a frame made of high-strength chrome-molybdenum steel and consists of longitudinal, transverse, and diagonal tubes at the door, under the car roof, around the windscreen, and behind the seats. In the event of a side impact, which is the greatest danger in rally specials, the energy-absorbing padding between the outer door skin and the interior is used to protect the crew in addition to the frame. It consists of absorbent foam and door panels made of composite materials, including a Kevlar layer.
100% sustainable petrol
The FABIA RS Rally2’s tank is protected by a carbon-Kevlar composite cover and absorbent layer. It can hold the petrol used in the 2022 FIA World Rally Championship, which is 100% sustainable as it is made up of biofuel derived from bio-waste and synthetic e-fuel. The latter is produced using renewable energy sources by electrolysis of “green” hydrogen and CO2 extracted from the air and industrial processes. ED

What do the test drivers say?
Andreas Mikkelsen
WRC 2 World Champion
The new FABIA RS Rally2 handles well and is very predictable, which gives the driver a lot of confidence as he knows what will happen in any situation. I am sure it will be a very successful car. Our goal is to have a car with a wide range, so that it works in different situations and weather and on different surfaces. I used to have a bit of trouble with the car’s cornering, but now it works very well in that respect. The engine has undergone significant progress as well.
Jan Kopecký
Czech champion
The new car is very easy to handle. You can drive it on gravel, dry and wet asphalt and still feel its great grip, which is very important. I appreciate especially the car’s stability, there is a big difference from the previous generation.
Kris Meeke
Winner of five WRC races
We tested on tracks that I know well, in Finland and Catalonia, so I can say that this car feels as fast to me as the older generation WRC cars. Its chassis feels a lot more stable, it is stiffer, which means you can put more power into the car and it gives you back by giving you enough support to go really fast.
Emil Lindholm
Champion of Finland
I feel good in the car and I am looking forward to taking it to the rally. I appreciate a lot of things about it, but first and foremost, its strong engine and great torque. You feel like it has a bigger engine than it actually does.
Premiere at “Bohemka”
Fans will be able to see the new FABIA RS Rally2 competition special live during the Bohemia Rally Mladá Boleslav, which will take place from 8 to 10 July. Andreas Mikkelsen, the reigning WRC2 World Champion, will drive it on all stages outside of competition. With the Central Bohemian race, the SONAX Czech Automobile Championship will move into its second half. It is headed by the Jan Kopecký / Jan Hloušek crew in the FABIA Rally2 evo of the Agrotec ŠKODA Rally Team. They also won the Agrotec Petronas Rally Hustopeče in June and took the lead in the championship. All four crews from authorised ŠKODA AUTO Czech Republic dealers successfully completed the South Moravian event, which took place in extreme temperatures.
Gravel pearl of the Mediterranean
At the beginning of June, the World Rally Championship series headed to Sardinia, Italy. Six FABIA Rally2 evo cars finished in the top ten of the WRC2 category in what was one of the toughest races of the season on hot gravel roads. Nikolay Gryazin and co-driver Konstantin Aleksandrov of the Toksport WRT team, which races with the support of ŠKODA Motorsport, were delighted with a victory behind the wheel of this special. The World Championship continues on the last weekend of June with the Safari Rally Kenya. ED
Sustainability
Social sustainability at ŠKODA AUTO
The carmaker sees responsibility as a key element for further development. Only by being responsible will we ensure a sustainable future for ourselves and the environment
n its new functional strategy, NEXT LEVEL ŠKODA PEOPLE STRATEGY 2030, the Area S – People & Culture is committed to preparing the conditions for ŠKODA AUTO to become a role model in sustainability. The carmaker contributes to the development of society, particularly in the areas of education, mobility, volunteering, wellbeing (mental and physical health), and diversity. These areas are also summarised in the latest Sustainability Report 2019/2020.
The driving force of education
ŠKODA AUTO has a lot to offer in the area of technical education, for example. The Vocational School of Mechanical Engineering (SOUs) is one of the oldest in the Czech Republic. The carmaker’s primary goal is to ensure that its employees have qualifications relevant to future needs. Thanks to their experience, the employees of the ŠKODA Academy, which also includes the SOUs, help young technicians to acquire the necessary knowledge and professional competences, so that they can contribute to the further development of the carmaker through their innovations. Cooperation with schools, supporting teachers and motivating students to study technology is crucial for the future of not only ŠKODA AUTO but also the Czech economy as such.
Mobility for all
The carmaker helps not only financially but also through its products. For people with reduced mobility, the car represents freedom of movement and a fundamental improvement in their quality of life. Accessible, barrier-free mobility for those who need it most is therefore another goal of the carmaker. It fulfils this with a comprehensive support system for people with disabilities. However, single mothers without the means to buy a car or seniors who can no longer drive may also be immobile. ŠKODA AUTO wishes to help find solutions to make mobility accessible for them as well.
Role model in road safety
Mobility must not only be accessible, but also as safe as possible. That is why ŠKODA AUTO uses the expertise of its Traffic Safety Research team to help the most vulnerable groups get the information they need to be as safe as possible when travelling and avoid serious mistakes. The carmaker’s employees should play the role of ambassadors for road safety and set an example in this regard in the future.
Help effectively
Last but not least, the carmaker focuses on volunteering and active assistance. It wishes to enable its employees as much as possible to help wherever it is needed. Active help does not have to be limited to the now relatively common activities (picking up litter, planting trees), but can be based, for example, on what skills or knowledge a person has. ŠKODA AUTO will therefore aim to match organisations with specific needs and volunteers with the right competences so that their help can have a real added value. It will also enable employees to share their knowledge in employee working groups and involve them even more in the development of the volunteer community. ED

Innovations for efficient work
Two new services make it easier for you to communicate and work with materials in foreign languages
Group’s GMT translator
Machine-based online translators currently offer very efficient assistance when working with materials in foreign languages. Until now, however, ŠKODA AUTO has prohibited their use for any classified texts. But now the company’s GMT translator is at your disposal, which allows you to instantly create indicative translations of texts and documents, even classified ones. Thus, all the working materials can be translated except those classified as secret. The service can be found on ŠKODA Space in the My Apps menu under the VW Translator name. It handles translations in both directions among 111 languages and allows you to work with documents in common formats, such as .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .pptx and many others, up to 25 MB in size.
Yammer social channel
ŠKODA AUTO has started using another element of Office 365. The Yammer application connects colleagues across the company into one shared community where they can easily discuss, ask questions, and receive advice from others. In its environment and controls, this channel resembles, for example, Facebook. In Yammer you can share interesting news, tips, initiatives, questions, events, contests, and anything else. What is more, it is even easier to connect with your colleagues from Group brands who are already using the platform. You can download the Yammer application to your business or personal phone (in BYOD – Bring Your Own Device – mode) and add it to your MS Teams. ED
You can find information on how to set up and use the Yammer application here.

Sports style for India
The KUSHAQ compact SUV for the Indian market gets the sports MONTE CARLO version
he special edition, which ŠKODA AUTO is currently also offering on the FABIA, SCALA, and KAMIQ models, refers to the Mladá Boleslav brand’s involvement in the legendary Monte Carlo Rally. In this version, the KUSHAQ model received a number of stylish extras and extra equipment. The powertrain offering is based on the basic version, but also brings customers something extra – the 85 kW three-cylinder 1.0 TSI engine in the MONTE CARLO version also features economical start-stop technology, while the more powerful 110 kW four-cylinder 1.5 TSI Evo comes with stylish red-painted disc brake callipers.
The MONTE CARLO pleases your heart. It is for those who appreciate subtle sports aesthetics and have a sense of style.
Zac Hollis
Sales and Marketing Director of ŠKODA Brand in India
The sports KUSHAQ MONTE CARLO is available in two exclusive colours, Tornado Red and Candy White. Its glossy black painted elements, such as the front radiator grille and the ŠKODA lettering on the rear of the car, are also a common feature. The stylish exterior is further enhanced by a contrasting roof in glossy Carbon Steel paint and 17-inch Vega aluminium wheels inspired by the brand’s most powerful model in the Indian market, the OCTAVIA vRS 245.
Of course, the interior could not do without stylish accessories either. It is interwoven with a number of details in red, from the painted centre console or the moulding running across the dashboard to the special combination of leather upholstery on the seats, which are both front and ventilated, to the red elements in the virtual cockpit and the car’s infotainment system.
At the beginning of May, selected European motoring journalists also had the opportunity to get to know the KUSHAQ MONTE CARLO model and the recently introduced SLAVIA compact model. On a roughly 200-kilometre route around Mumbai and Pune they were able to experience the models in their home destination that they would not encounter on the European roads.
The KUSHAQ model is produced at the ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) plant in Pune. The first customers will receive it in July 2021. The compact SUV is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform, a version of the modular platform developed under the baton of ŠKODA AUTO specifically for the Indian market. Together with the SLAVIA model, it is part of the INDIA 2.0 project, which was introduced by ŠKODA AUTO after it assumed Group responsibility for the region. Its goal is to offer completely new, competitive and well-equipped as well as safe cars under the ŠKODA and Volkswagen brands there. ED

Engines from Pune
The production of the 1.0 TSI units in India marked another milestone in March, boosting its localisation rate
he ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) plant in Pune, India, has expanded its operations to include machining and was thus able to start production of complete 1.0 TSI cylinder blocks in March. This follows the start of engine assembly in April 2021. Until now, however, engines have been assembled exclusively from parts supplied from Europe. This is now the second phase of localisation of production of these units, which, along with machining of the engine heads at the Pune plant, includes localisation of other engine parts in India.
Engine machining and production is a very technologically demanding process, so a detailed plan has been drawn up to train the Indian workers at the equipment supplier and especially at the PK – Component Production Department in Mladá Boleslav. However, everything was aaffected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The PK Department unit employees in Pune have been trained as much as possible in Mladá Boleslav, and a special team of the PKM – Engine EA 211 and PKT – Technical Service helped directly in Pune with the production start.
In addition to the 1.0 TSI engine, the 1.5 TSI Evo engine is also assembled in Pune. This year, the plan is to produce a total of 120,000 units here, which represents an almost fourfold increase compared to 2021. Around 300 employees are involved in the production of engines for the KUSHAQ, SLAVIA cars and the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus models, and the number of employees is expected to continue growing as the line capacity increases. Progress in India
Maren Gräf, Member of the Board of Directors for People and Culture, praised SAVWIPL’s achievements
uring her recent visit to India, Maren Gräf expressed her admiration for ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) for the progress it has made as part of the company-wide NEXT LEVEL – ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030. This is especially in relation to diversity, eMobility, and sustainability. “The internationality of the ŠKODA family is unique, bringing the discovery of new cultures and great colleagues around the world. In India, while visiting our partner SAVWIPL, I saw how our colleagues apply Škoda’s mindset at Mumbai, Pune, and Aurangabad sites. I was impressed by the enthusiasm and progress in transformation there,” says Gräf. Diversity and inclusion at SAVWIPL are supported by the EmpowerHer and License to Drive programmes (we wrote about the latter in ŠKODA Mobil 5/2022), which promote gender equality and help develop female talent to reach management positions. There are a number of training courses in eMobility to upskill and retrain in the necessary skills.
ŠKODA AUTO and the KOVO Trade Union are also involved in important social responsibility projects in India. “The topic of sustainability means, among other things, taking responsibility in a challenging social environment. It was an honour to visit the institutions we support: the Indrayani Cancer Institute and the Jagriti School for blind students in Pune,” adds Gräf. The cancer institute has been operating since 2003 and specialises in the prevention, early detection, and treatment of cancer. In the last five years, about 50,000 people have been treated for cancer there. This year’s support from ŠKODA AUTO and the KOVO Trade Union worth three million Indian rupees (approximately one million crowns) has contributed to the purchase of modern equipment for a new operating theatre. Jagriti School has seen the completion of its new building. It provides students with education relevant to their employment, especially in administration. Financial support will still be given to complete the construction of the school’s multipurpose room and so-called green room. ED

Diligence and enthusiasm
Lubomír Antoš, who has been instrumental in the success of the INDIA 2.0 project, is leaving the carmaker after 46 years
Mr. Antoš, what is your favourite memory from your time at the carmaker?
The first such project is definitely the FAVORIT model. At that time, I was in charge of the testing and prototype construction at Cesana and I was the youngest in the management team. The project is very much associated with designer Petr Hrdlička, then director of development. However, I was also able to learn from other experienced colleagues who worked under high time pressure with enthusiasm, sparing no effort. These were Chief Designer Miroslav Pech, Chief Body Designer Bohuslav Drbohlav, Chief Designer of Chassis and Power Units Jan Nepomucký, and Head of Prototype Production, Technology and Supply Development Václav Novák. I also think very often of Technical Deputy Zdeněk Patočka. I still use some of the phrases he coined.
What were the other projects?
The first-generation OCTAVIA, which I led as a product manager, was also important for me. Everything about this project was new, it was the first car prepared in cooperation with VW. I associate it with getting to know many of my German colleagues working at ŠKODA AUTO – I got to know former VW Group managers Ferdinand Piëch and Martin Winterkorn personally, and I regularly worked with Group product management legend Horst Koenig and later VW Group boss Mathias Müller. The first-generation SUPERB is in my heart as well, because with it ŠKODA has returned to the upper middle class, where I believe it has always belonged. I will always associate it with Wilfried Bockelmann, then a member of the Board of Directors for Technical Development. A completely new challenge for me was also the engagement in Wolfsburg, where I was responsible for the new PQ mix platform and the all-new Tiguan model as a product manager. And then there was the INDIA 2.0 project...
What is your relationship to this project?
For the last four years, I have spent 80% to 90% of my time on it. In the beginning, I kind of pushed it. The VW Group was looking at different scenarios for India going forward and could not find one that was financially viable. Cooperation with an external company was also on the table, and ŠKODA AUTO was to explore this route. However, the project team did not like this idea, and we, therefore, prepared a concept based on our Group’s platform for the A0 class, but technically optimised for the Indian market and with localised production as much as possible. We worked out all the possible cost-saving proposals and wrote them down on one piece of paper. On the basis of this paper, we practically managed to get a decision from the VW Group management, and the INDIA 2.0 project took off. Its basic theme was localisation, so we had hundreds of hours of meetings with suppliers in the region. In addition, COVID-19 came into the picture. We did manage the negotiations remotely, but it would have been more complicated without the initial face-to-face meetings. The result is four nice cars in series production in Pune, which the carmaker is supplying to our customers in India and beyond.
What would you wish ŠKODA AUTO and your colleagues in the years to come? And what would be your message for them?
I would like to wish all the employees good health and happiness. And at least as many successful cars and projects for the carmaker as in the last 30 years. And my message for them? Success does not materialise out of thin air, you have to work hard, diligently, and with a bit of enthusiasm. ED
Green Future / events
Let us clean the Czech Republic
322 volunteers from all three ŠKODA AUTO plants took part in the intensive nature clean-up, as well as dozens of refugees from Ukraine, whom the carmaker is helping integrate into society. The April event in the Milovice protected landscape area near Mladá Boleslav was followed on 21 May by a clean-up along watercourses in the vicinity of Harrachov, where the event was co-organised by the Krkonoše National Park Administration. Then, on 22 May, volunteers went to the area around the Šerlich Hill on the ridge of the Orlické Mountains, where the Czech Union of Nature Conservationists organised a litter pickup. In total, the volunteers collected 18 tonnes of rubbish in these three locations.
Supporting biodiversity
Nature conservation and sustainable development are a firm part of the company-wide NEXT LEVEL – ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030. A number of activities are, therefore, being carried out to promote biodiversity in and around the production sites. The carmaker has installed more than 100 birdhouses and several insect hotels in and around the Vrchlabí plant. This year, the company plans to deploy dozens more birdhouses along with three insect and two bumblebee hotels in the vicinity of the Mladá Boleslav plant. Similar activities are also being carried out by the Kvasiny plant – it is installing birdhouses in Rychnov nad Kněžnou and its surroundings, and benches, information and educational boards and other elements in the Včelná locality. Other activities include the ŠKODA Trees project, in which the carmaker has committed to planting one seedling for every car sold in the Czech Republic. Following the millionth tree planted last year, the company intends to plant approximately 79,900 more trees this year. ED
Green Future / rainwater
Rainwater management
Responsible management of rainwater at the main production site
he large plant area in Mladá Boleslav places great demands on ŠKODA AUTO, as far as rainwater management is concerned. Legislation calls for the economical management of rainwater and also stipulates how it is to be discharged off-site. ŠKODA AUTO, therefore, uses large retention tanks that hold the water and discharge it in a regulated manner. “At the main production site, we deal with the drainage of rainwater from the total area of 263.3 ha in this way. These are paved areas and roofs, from which rainwater runs off either through conventional or separate stormwater drains. The key task of this system is to protect not only the plant, but also Mladá Boleslav and other municipalities in the catchment area of the Zalužanský Creek and Jizera River from flooding to the maximum extent possible,” says Lubomír Vasický, Head of the PPB – Construction and Infrastructure Planning Department. The current state of the entire system is the result of 20 years of efforts by this department, which initiated and implemented a number of minor and major modifications to the existing networks.
Four interrelated considerations – ecological, safety, economic, and legislative – motivate stormwater management.
Water retention
The Mladá Boleslav plant is divided into four stormwater zones (see the column). The rainwater from zones 1 and 2 proceeds through a single sewerage system to the wastewater treatment plant in Neuberk. Water from zones 3 and 4 is captured by retention tanks at the carmaker’s site, from where it is pumped to lagoons for treatment at station Z22. It is then pumped into the Zalužanský Creek in accordance with the legislation in force and water management permit. Rainwater from the western part of the plant (mainly from the vicinity of the new paint shop) is pumped from the retention tank into the gallery under the Václav Klement Street and ends up in the Jizera River.
The retention tanks are mostly empty in times of drought, but part of the volume is used by the carmaker to retain water to water the greenery at the plant and in the city. The allocated volume of one tank (365 m3) is enough for ten days of watering during the most extreme drought and the hottest heat. In total, ŠKODA AUTO can store up to 1,062 m3 of water at the main plant in this way, so that it features a long-term water surplus. This is what the company offers to the city, which can receive water from a source located outside the plant.
Advanced automation
“At ŠKODA AUTO we are now looking for a way to manage rainwater even more efficiently. We see the solution in software that would help automatically manage the optimal capacity of the retention tanks depending on the weather. In the event of incoming rainfall, the level should be automatically lowered and the necessary space created to capture the estimated, for example, torrential rain,” continues L. Vasický. In this respect, the area of the plant is also decisive: it is already too large for a simple reaction, but it is still relatively small to predict the amount of rainfall based on radar data alone. Therefore, ŠKODA AUTO uses rain gauges in three nearby locations to help it estimate the amount of precipitation that will fall on the plant area. ED

Green Future / Strategy Talks
Brand’s sustainable mission
The Strategy Talks series continued with sessions on ŠKODA brand’s mission and sustainability
he discussion on ŠKODA brand’s mission was opened by Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing, who described our future customers. “We wish to move from customers who only expect good value for money to those who focus on family values, explore the world around them, and lead an active life,” said Mr Jahn. He also outlined the modernisation of the brand’s corporate identity and the new MODERN SOLID design language. Both represent the biggest transformation since the Czech carmaker became part of the VW Group. Meredith Kelly, Head of the VM – Marketing Department, described how the new brand’s mission (Helping the world live smarter) reflects how the Škoda employees always look for a better way, being innovative, and coming up with Simply Clever solutions.
The discussion on sustainability has concluded the series of Strategy Talks organized by GSC – Corporate Strategy and SX – Transformation, which directly involved more than 1,500 employees over the past year. The topic of sustainability was opened by its sponsors Maren Gräf, Member of Board for People & Culture, and Michael Oeljeklaus Board Member for Manufacturing and Logistics. “We place much more emphasis on diversity, volunteering, education or the mental and physical health of our employees,” said Ms Gräf. The leaders of the individual sustainability pillars explained the carmaker’s ambitions for 2030 in the areas of environmental, social, and economic and governance (ESG). “We need to have a more open dialogue and respond systematically to diverse challenges. That is why we have created a Sustainability Advisory Committee, which will help us achieve our ambitious goals in this area with its suggestions and recommendations,” concluded M. Oeljeklaus in the discussion. RED

Green Future / eco-campaign
A better world for all
A new campaign at ŠKODA AUTO’s restaurants highlights the environmental challenges of eating out
ealthy people and healthy food cannot exist on a sick planet. But sometimes, all it takes is a small step to make the Earth a better place to live. That is why the new eco-campaign developed by the SPP/4 – Social Services department and Aramark highlights the most pressing issues at the moment while offering solutions for everyone. Information visuals placed in restaurants and published on the ŠKODA Space portal address the most important environmental topics. What are they?
Excess water consumption
Drinking water may become scarce in the future. Every person in the Czech Republic consumes 133 litres per day. In the developing world, up to 15 people have to make do with this amount. The more water we consume, the less will be left for nature. If we do not waste water, we can reverse the negative trend and still save money. We can start with the seemingly small things – using the full capacity of the washing machine, brushing our teeth without running water or checking the condition of the taps at home. A heavily dripping tap can leak more than 50 litres of water a day.
Carbon footprint
The carbon footprint of every Czech is 12 tonnes of CO2 per year, to give you an idea, the same footprint is achieved by 137 car journeys on the Prague-Košice route. The biggest burden is the production of meat and animal products. In this respect, beef cattle farming leads the way, with 27 kg of CO2 per kilogram of meat (and 18,000 litres of water). The senseless transport of raw materials and food across the planet also contributes to carbon dioxide emissions. If we prefer seasonal food from local suppliers and reduce our meat consumption, we can easily and quickly contribute to reducing our own carbon footprint
Limiting disposable packaging
Disposable packaging is also a major problem, with 54 tonnes of it thrown away every day in the Czech Republic, equivalent to the weight of about 14 Indian elephants. By using reusable or returnable packaging, such as REkrabičky used at ŠKODA AUTO’s restaurants, we contribute to significant material savings, water conservation, and waste elimination. ED
Join the eco-campaign
This campaign reminds ŠKODA AUTO’s employees that they live in an interconnected world that affects their everyday lives and where everything is connected to everything else. It is, therefore, up to everyone how they approach the challenges of the 21st century. So keep an eye on all the visuals in the restaurants and on the ŠKODA Space portal. And do not forget to fill in the survey questionnaire. If you answer all the questions correctly, you will automatically be entered into a competition to win eco-friendly KeepCup mugs.
The questionnaire can be found here.
Diversity
Diversity
New employee community
The Internationals@ŠKODA group wishes to become the epicentre of internationalisation at ŠKODA AUTO
smooth year at the carmaker was marked by surprises, particularly in the field of diversity. Thanks to this, a young and motivated employee group was formed towards the end of the year, which set itself the task of raising awareness of the value of international diversity at the carmaker, helping to create a more attractive working environment for foreigners, strengthening external perception of ŠKODA as an employer of choice, and acting as an information bridge between its members and the carmaker.
The Internationals@ŠKODA group was officially launched on 31 May. Since then, it is no longer just a group of employees “on paper”, but an active community led by Aida Merušić (Internal Service Specialist – Planning, VE1 – Region 1), Romny Romero (Project Coordinator, EXZ – Project Management, PCMS and R&D Processes) and Robin Ojha (Area G Innovation manager from GSC – Corporate Strategy and Innovation Management). “We are pleased to support and actively contribute to the ENGAGE pillar of our NEXT LEVEL – ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030 and to be accepted by the automotive industry. We are glad ŠKODA AUTO recognizes how our community resonates with its values,” the organizational team says in unison. “The launch of the new international community was the highlight of the diversity events in May. I thank the organizing team for the great initiative and wonderful opening. We fully support cooperation across borders, cultures and nationalities in People and Culture. Diversity in all its dimensions makes us, Škoda employees, stronger and more prepared for any future challenges,” said Maren Gräf, Board Member for People & Culture.
Internationals@ŠKODA has 108 members so far and is open to any employee who is interested in the topic of cultural diversity at ŠKODA. The members will meet at regular events and write to each other through SharePoint email conference. The group has only been active in the Czech Republic so far, but in the future it is going to expand to other regions where the carmaker operates. ED
Community news and events can be found at SharePoint, and the organizing team can be contacted at e-mail.

Helping with integration
ŠKODA AUTO Foundation and partners help Ukrainian children and adults
nteresting leisure and education programmes for Ukrainian children and adults in the Mladá Boleslav, Rychnov nad Kněžnou, and Vrchlabí regions were created through the cooperation of the SE – ŠKODA Academy including the Vocational School of Mechanical Engineering (SOUs) with the SR – External Relations Department, ŠKODA AUTO Foundation (NFŠA), ŠKODA AUTO University (ŠAVŠ), and the Chance for Children Foundation (Šance pro děti).
Mladá Boleslav region
Educational afternoon
In April, an Educational afternoon was held at the premises of the ŠKODA AUTO University. Ukrainian pupils, students, and parents were able to find out about studying in the region and discuss topics needed for practical life or to learn about the Czech education system and the differences among our countries. About 75 parents and students attended the event. The organisers would like to prepare similar thematic afternoons focused on health and mental well-being, culture, leisure time activities, etc.
Racing with RC models
On 17 May, a leisure afternoon for children from Mladá Boleslav and Ukraine took place at the premises of the Vocational school. Under the supervision of four pupils and teacher from the RC club at SOUs, they raced with remote control model cars.
Czech for Ukrainian teachers
In mid-May, the ŠKODA AUTO University and its partners started teaching Czech language to Ukrainian teachers who will assist Czech teachers in the new school year. The lessons are conducted online and are adapted for beginners and intermediate students. However, there are also plans for joint activities at the University’s facilities, in the town and its surroundings. In case of continued interest, the courses will resume or the University will open additional ones for new students.
Courses for secondary school and college students
During the summer, Ukrainian secondary school students and future college students can take part in Czech language courses. At least four groups will be open at two levels adapted to suit complete beginners and intermediate students. The courses will run at ŠKODA AUTO University during the summer holidays and will only be interrupted during ŠKODA AUTO’s full-time holiday.
Suburban camps
Summer suburban camps for Ukrainian children aged 6 to 15 years with the Technology Day programme will be held at the ŠKODA AUTO University and the premises of the SOUs during July and August. The programme of the camps will mainly focus on the integration of children and adolescents into society and exploring the city and its surroundings. There will be various activities, games, and competitions. The suburban camps will run in Czech, but Ukrainian educators will help with any language barrier throughout. ED
New portal
On 1 June, in cooperation with ŠAVŠ, NFŠA, and the Chance for Children Foundation, the carmaker launched a portal where all the interested parties can find comprehensive information on educational, integration, and leisure activities in the regions. Gradually, various organisations, foundations, and institutions are logging on to the website to offer clubs and leisure activities in the regions of Mladá Boleslav, Rychnov nad Kněžnou, and Vrchlabí.
The portal of leisure and educational activities can be here.
Did you know that...
... The ŠKODA AUTO Foundation also focuses on supporting ambassadors in all the regions? These are local individuals or organisations that inspire others to be active in areas such as education, social issues, ecology or neighbourhood development. In this way, they help spread awareness of important issues and are directly involved in the activities of the Foundation.
Vrchlabí and Rychnov regions
he ŠKODA AUTO Foundation also supports activities related to teaching children and adults in other regions. In the Vrchlabí region it has provided textbooks for teaching the Czech language to foreigners. It has also supported Czech language teaching for children at three primary schools and at the Pelíšek children’s facility. For adults, language courses are held at the Community Centre in the Střelnice Cultural Centre in Vrchlabí. During the parents’ lessons, a varied integration programme is provided for their children, which also includes Czech children. Around 50 adults, mainly women, attend the Community Centre. Another 50 Ukrainian men and women will be able to participate in language courses directly in the hostel where they live.
In the Rychnov region, Czech language classes for children are held at almost all the larger schools. Educational language courses are provided for all the age groups. Courses are held 3 times a week, for example at the Déčko children’s facility in Rychnov nad Kněžnou, as well as at cultural centres in Solnice, Dobruška, and Kostelec. Attendance is really high, only in Rychnov around 100 people attend them. Local non-profit organisations are also actively involved in the assistance, offering their additional services. In this region, the carmaker has also provided 140 Czech language textbooks for foreigners. RED

Ročník 2023
Launching a new era in India
Four metres is a critical threshold in the Indian automobile market and its segment with this maximum length accounts for nearly 30%. Škoda Auto is entering this segment with the new compact SUV, the Kylaq, which is developed and manufactured in India specifically to cater to the preferences of local customers. This launch follows the earlier introductions of the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan.
Conquering the French market
More than half a million visitors flocked to the Paris Motor Show in October, where global carmakers were in attendance. The Škoda Auto stand featured the new electric Elroq, which garnered much attention. Other cars from Škoda’s portfolio were also on display, including a specially modified fourth-generation Superb for the Tour de France race director and the Fabia RS Rally2 competition special.
Reducing software complexity
The second of the Brand Group Core’s six strategic packages is titled Reducing Complexity and focuses primarily on software. The increasing number of drives and assistance systems and the integration of other vehicle functions have led to a complex array of software variants. The aim of reducing the number of software variants is to decrease costs and enhance cybersecurity.
A look inside the battery
The new tomography centre in Hall M6 allows for non-destructive testing of the quality of MEB’s electric platform batteries. Škoda Auto inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility in June this year, and there may not be another facility like it in any other carmaker. Historically, the industry has employed computed tomography technology, or CT scanning, mainly for smaller parts.
Pohled do útrob baterie
Kompaktní, a tedy i dostupnější elektrické SUV značky Škoda.
Elroq loaded with news
On October 1st, the Elroq made its world premiere in Prague. A compact and more affordable electric SUV from Škoda, this latest addition to the carmaker's model range impresses not only with its innovative features and solutions but also with its appearance showcasing the new Modern Solid design language. This language is characterised by functionality, durability and the use of sustainable materials.
Indian student car
Following the model of the Mladá Boleslav apprenticeship, students in India also built their own car. The result is an innovative pickup truck created by combining two Volkswagen models produced under the Škoda Auto banner at the Indian plant in Pune – Taigun SUV and Virtus sedan. The students had access to the latest technology, including 3D printing, which they used to produce the necessary parts.
FORCEd to peak
The Production and Logistics area is implementing a new production strategy. Škoda Auto will now ensure that the development of new vehicles considers efficient production requirements from the start. The aim is to reduce complexity, enhance automation, increase modularity and develop sustainable plants with optimal business results. All of these elements are crucial to Škoda Auto's future success.
Conference for female managers
Supporting women in leadership positions is a key component of Škoda Auto's diversity strategy. In line with this, the carmaker, in cooperation with McKinsey & Company, organised the Women Management Summit. The event focused on trends in the automotive industry, the importance of employees during transformation periods and leadership styles that foster an inclusive and equitable work environment.
Výrobní strategie peak
Oblast Výroby a logistiky zavádí novou výrobní strategii peak.
