What is happening at ŠKODA AUTO
We’re standing firmly on our feet
A management information meeting on the current situation at ŠKODA AUTO took place in early June. Owing to the measures implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19, this event took place as a live online broadcast. Chairman of the Board Bernhard Maier assured the managers that the carmaker is handling the current situation calmly and standing firmly on its feet. Further details were presented by Bohdan Wojnar, Board Member for HR Management, and Jiří Prokop, Head of SG – Health Care Services and Ergonomics, who addressed sanitary and safety measures, because of which the regular breakfasts with the Chairman of the Board are not taking place either. Employees will still be given an opportunity to ask him what they are interested in, however. This may be done either via e-mail or the OPEN TALK, which will take place on 15 July as an online broadcast.
Send questions for the Chairman of the Board
We have good reasons to remain optimistic regarding our future. ŠKODA AUTO is strategically well situated and has solid foundations and an attractive model range.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF ŠKODA AUTO
6 years
Dieter Seemann has served as the Board Member for Purchasing since October 2014. In six years, he has managed to strengthen cooperation with the supply network of ŠKODA AUTO.
Change in management
Karsten Schnake (pictured) is taking over the post of Board Member for Purchasing at ŠKODA AUTO on 1 July, replacing Dieter Seemann, who is retiring early after six years on the job. The new member of the Czech carmaker’s management team previously held the position of Executive Vice President of Volkswagen Group China, which put him in charge of strategic purchasing and contract awarding for all Group brands.

OCTAVIA for worse roads
The third generation of the lifestyle estate OCTAVIA SCOUT is having its world premiere at the beginning of July. The car boasts a number of robust features, is 15 mm higher and has all-wheel drive. Customers selecting the version with the most powerful 2.0 TDI engine of 147 kW will be able to pull a braked trailer weighing up to 2 tonnes. The car’s specifically shaped front and rear bumpers with the lower part in matt silver give it a particular look. A whole range of distinctive elements stand out in the interior, too. One of the things that the seat covers, steering wheel, armrest and dashboard impress with is the contrasting brown stitching.
One made out of two
The updated ŠKODA Connect App has merged the functions of its previous version, such as remote car locking and unlocking, with the ŠKODA OneApp. By using the SmartLink+ technology, it provides access to the car data via a smartphone. Thus, the new unified version becomes even more Simply Clever and user-friendly. It’s been also enriched with other solutions facilitating remote access and communication with the car and is available for free for Android and iOS.

News from the Group
Closer cooperation with Ford
The VW Group’s Supervisory Board has approved global cooperation with Ford. Projects in commercial vehicles and e-mobility will come first. The Group wants to adapt a medium-sized pick-up developed by the American brand for some markets and will take care of the development of an urban delivery truck. In turn, Ford will use the Group’s MEB platform for EVs in a vehicle intended for Europe and will be responsible for designing a 1.5-tonne van. Both carmakers expect their shared development costs to secure them a number of benefits.
Changes in top management
Starting on 1 July, the VW Group is changing the division of functions in top management. Herbert Diess, Chairman of the Board, will concentrate on tasks within the entire Group, leaving the management of the Volkswagen brand to Ralf Brandstätter (pictured), who has been working for the German carmaker as Operational Director for the past two years. Another change will take place in the Board of Management as Dr. Stefan Sommer is leaving at the end of June at his own request. Frank Witter will temporarily assume his remit.
With its new visual design, ŠKODA Mobil scored in the Czech Public Relations (‘Lemur’) Awards 2020 by winning first prize among corporate publications and taking second place in the Internal Communications category.
Awards
Driving comfort with a seal of quality
‘Aktion Gesunder Rücken’, the German initiative for a healthy back, awarded a seal of quality for the ergonomic front seats of the OCTAVIA of new generation. The model met the strict criteria jointly developed by independent physicians and therapists from various fields of expertise. The award-winning seats are optional. Drivers and passengers are offered electrically adjustable lumbar supports, retractable seats and massage and ventilation functions.
Two AWDs of the year
Two ŠKODA models won in their categories in the poll of the German ‘Auto Bild Allrad’ magazine. Readers chose the OCTAVIA model in the ‘4×4 Passenger Car up to EUR 40,000’ category as the best imported car and the absolute winner. The SUPERB was then chosen as the winner among imported cars in the ‘4×4 Passenger Car over EUR 40,000’ category. In total, voters chose from among 218 models divided into 10 categories.
Employee collection The “Help Medical Staff Fight COVID-19” employee collection initiative brought in a total of CZK 1,148,490. The amount included a CZK 380,000 contribution by the
KOVO Trade Union, and the resulting amount was matched by the carmaker.
Motorsport
Back to racing
After two cancelled races, the shortened Czech Rally Championship series will start on 11 July and open with the Rally Bohemia Mladá Boleslav event. The ŠKODA Motorsport factory team will be there and put one FABIA Rally2 evo car on the track. Jan Kopecký and his navigator, Jan Hloušek, with whom the driver completed two WRC2 Pro World Championships last year, will try to defend the Czech title. They already had their first joint start this season after participating in the MOGUL Test Rally at the Sosnová Autodrome in June.

Safe holidays
ŠKODA AUTO projects will advise you on how to manage the summer in a car or on a bike without complications
he pandemic has changed the Czechs’ plans for summer. Instead of a holiday by the sea, many will spend it inside the country’s borders. The traffic on cycle tracks will certainly get congested, too, increased by tourists riding the wave of e-bikes. For this reason, the carmaker is promoting activities that improve traffic conditions and are supported as part of the Employee Collections, grants and other projects. These include Safe Friday, which has long focused on educating children on traffic safety and prevention. ŠKODA AUTO’s Traffic Safety Research team focuses on a detailed analysis of causes, circumstances and development of various road accidents. Its experts have prepared a set of recommendations you can use when travelling during the holidays. Rani Tolimat

How to behave on a bike in summer
Think the route through
The basic rule is simple: If you can travel on a bike track, do it and avoid the road. If it’s not possible, ride behind one another and not side by side, even if you don’t see another car anywhere. They may come from around a bend or over the horizon. If you go on bikes with children, all the principles apply twice. A group with young cyclists should always be tailed by an adult – first, because a car driver can notice an adult earlier than a child, and second, because an adult can react better in a risky situation.
Dress appropriately
The most important part of your safety equipment is the helmet, which must fit properly and protect both the top and the forehead. Keep the straps properly tightened – you can tell by opening your mouth fully. Clothing with high-visibility elements will make you much easier to notice not only during the day but also when passing through a shaded forest or during an unexpected storm. High-visibility vests for children should be used as drivers can notice them better and will more drive carefully.
How to load your bikes
The best transportation tool is a towing device. ŠKODA AUTO manufactures and offers a very practical sliding type that is easy to put on and put away again. Bikes are easy to use with it, and it is absolutely safe to transport them in this way. You can also transport your bikes on the roof. Even if you secured the thoroughly, you’d better drive more slowly and carefully, especially in turns. Before you drive off, always remove everything that could fall off from the bikes along the way – lamps, pumps, mudguards etc.
Advice on how to behave on a bike in traffic, as well as news from the world of cycling, athletes’ stories and other interesting tips, can be found in the WeLoveCycling online magazine
What to think about in the car in summer
Get prepared in advance
“When going on holiday with the whole family, the car will be loaded differently than when you are driving to work. Most likely, you will have a full suitcase and maybe a load on the roof. In other words, a heavier car with a number of more difficult-to-reach places”, says Robert Šťastný from ŠKODA AUTO’s Traffic Safety Research. He adds that key steps include checking whether the tyres are properly inflated and have the necessary equipment. Drivers are recommended not to hide high-visibility vests and fire extinguishers under the floor of their loaded boots but have them on hand.
Proper loading
Place the luggage in the boot so that heavy items are as low as possible right behind the seats and secured with the appropriate straps or a net. If you have to add some luggage to the cockpit, it must not threaten the crew’s safety. You can put a backpack with clothes on an empty seat and fasten it with a seat belt. Forget about the space above the boot cover. Poorly stored cargo – even small items like an umbrella, a book, a camera or a bottle – has already done a lot of damage there.
Take your time to make adjustments
“People forget how important the headrest is. It plays a key role in accidents. Therefore, always have it adjusted correctly, even when you change behind the wheel”, Šťastný says. It is also true that if you have any objects in your pockets or on your belt, they must not be kept under the seat belt – they could be pushed into your body in the event of an impact. If you are wearing a belt, guide the lower seat belt below it. And never put your feet on the dashboard as a passenger.

You can also find useful tips for safe driving in previous editions of ŠKODA Mobil and on the ŠKODA Storyboard portal. Some of the things you may have read lately include how to manage rush hour without stress or what to focus on in a car when you start driving it after a long shutdown. There is also advice on how to cope with long journeys.
Safe Friday on a bike
nother part of the Safe Friday project focuses on cycling. The number of accidents involving cyclists and the share of those causing them have long been on the rise. The most effective form of prevention is to follow the traffic rules, avoid riding under the influence of alcohol and wear a helmet. Another important factor is also to have consideration for each other. When overtaking a cyclist, drivers should not forget:
To always use turn on their indicators even if they aren’t crossing the line – you are giving a signal to the car behind you, which can’t see the cyclist to avoid them in time.
That although there is no defined lateral distance when overtaking in the Czech Republic, experts recommend maintaining a distance of at least 1.5 m.
We teach schoolchildren and improve our roads
The teaching of traffic safety in the Mladá Boleslav region is supported by the ŠKODA AUTO Endowment Fund
he carmaker starts with traffic prevention as early as with children. Lecturers of the traffic safety team regularly attend elementary and nursery schools with their interactive programme. The project fully funded by the ŠKODA AUTO Endowment Fund is very popular. A total of 18 schools and kindergartens from Mladá Boleslav, Kosmonosy, Bělá pod Bezdězem, Mnichovo Hradiště and Dobrovice had joined it by mid-March to train 1,200 children. Among other things, the children learnt how to use seat belts correctly, why pedestrian visibility is important and how to carefully cross the road. The Elementary School of Dr. Edvard Beneš in Mladá Boleslav also tested the programme called “Ninth graders teach first graders”, in which children took an active part. “It’s great when children and teachers hear about information on traffic from experts”, says Iveta Sedláčková, Headmistress of the Nursery and Elementary School in Dobrovice. The programme will continue from September, with over 1,000 children participating in it again.
The Endowment Fund also involves the general public in improving the safety on the roads of Mladá Boleslav. A project calling for the active labelling of risk areas has elicited a great response. “More than 660 tips were gathered. Now we can have a discussion about this with the town authorities. We’ve already supported the creation of four new crossings in Mladá Boleslav and one in Bělá pod Bezdězem”, says Ladislav Kučera, Director of the ŠKODA AUTO Endowment Fund. RED

Diversity is the fuel for innovation
The third OPEN TALK, dedicated to diversity, was held online
he third debate of the OPEN TALK series took place in June in a non-traditional setting. Owing to the strict safety measures put in place to minimise the spread of coronavirus, the talk was held online and had more than 70 viewers. Jana Šrámová, Head of SB – Operative HR Care, Digitisation, HR 4.0, Jarmila Plachá, Head of ŠKODA AUTO DigiLab, Christian Strube, Board Member for Technical Development, and Dieter Seemann, Board Member for Purchasing, met together in front of the camera as participants during the face-masked debate, which the employees of ŠKDOA AUTO could watch on their company computers. Questions were then asked via the Slido platform.
The basic principle of diversity, namely the diversity of the workforce, was summarised by Strube in his introduction. Strube stated that diversity is the fuel for the power of innovation, adding that discussions about different views, attitudes and perspectives are of paramount importance and form the basis of innovation processes. In his opinion, diversity is helped by foreign experience. ŠKODA AUTO wants to make a contribution in this respect by bolstering its job rotations, for example. “Even though it is a more complex process, we do support them”, said Šrámová, adding that the entire system is continually being improved and adapted to the employees’ needs. In her opinion, flexible work, especially when it comes down to parents with young children, is another area that the car manufacturer should reinforce.
Have you had a positive experience with following or applying the principles of integrity in your work or private life? Do you want to share it with your other co-workers? If so, please send us a brief description of the situation and the circumstances under which it occurred via e-mail to integrity@skoda‑auto.cz.
The topic of diversity also significantly affects work with young people, who have completely different demands than other employees. “Today’s digital generation responds to a completely different motivation. They need to identify themselves with a vision. Young people want to develop their talent and have the opportunity to advance without having to tie down their personal lives”, says Plachá, adding that DigiLab has ample experience with this generation and can share it with others. “Talents in digital technology can join the company, and it is not true that older and more experienced generations would have nothing to say or teach”, she adds.
In response to one of the questions, the Board Member for Purchasing commented on the apparent contradiction between the fact that diversity promotes the freedom of individual employees and that the carmaker follows strict rules. “We are a large organisation. We cannot have absolute freedom. We need control mechanisms, but that doesn’t mean we will hinder innovative thinking. We need to generate and support creative ideas before we can assess how meaningful and effective they are”, Seemann said. You can watch a video of the entire discussion via ŠKODA Space. Luděk Vokáč
Pull in one direction
Interview with Barbora Špačková, Ambassador for Integrity from PFO/B – Paint Shop
What led you to become an ambassador for integrity?
I am interested in working with people, and I take pleasure in solving complex problems and situations. I’m glad I can work as an ambassador in the company.
What would you like to achieve as an ambassador?
I want the people in the company to be as satisfied as possible. This will happen if the cooperation between employees and their management works as well as possible. I would like to prevent them from coming across any unpleasant situations.
What benefits can you see if employees follow the principles of integrity in practice?
Good cooperation will save time and money and will improve working conditions. If we start addressing problems in time, we will mitigate their impact on the carmaker.
How do you understand the concept of integrity in the environment of ŠKODA AUTO?
I understand it as cooperation between individuals who pull in one direction, who are honest with themselves and their co-workers and who address problems together and without delay.
Integrity is often connected with situations without one right solution. Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you couldn’t follow the strict rules but knew that you had to manage somehow?
Of course, everyone must have experienced a similar situation. For example, in order not to lose finished bodies in our Paint Shop, we have to make quick decisions in the event of a robot failure. We first find out how long the repair will take and then consider whether we will stop the line and wait for the repair or produce in emergency mode. RED

Jointly, responsibly and quickly
Effective measures were taken during the pandemic thanks to close cooperation between Human Resources and the KOVO Trade Union
ow did Bohdan Wojnar, Board Member for HR Management, Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union, and Pavel Hlaváč, Head of HR Planning, coordinate their development?
How intensive were the negotiations with the KOVO Trade Union during the shutdown?
Wojnar: They definitely deserve to be thanked because the situation required bold and swift decisions. We all had to react flexibly and pragmatically. The cooperation with Chairman Povšík was constructive, and I felt a great deal of cohesion and solidarity all along. I would like such an atmosphere to continue in the future as well.
What did you unequivocally agree on, and where did you look for compromises?
Povšík: Not a day went by when we weren’t surprised by a new situation. We were afraid that people could leave on their own. Together we decided to follow two lines of solutions. First, we would take care of maintaining the health of every employee and every service worker. And second, we would focus on how to restart production as quickly as possible. Both lines are related. There is no livelihood without a factory and on the other hand without healthy employees a company cannot produce. There was not a single phone call that we would not answer, a single problem that we would not solve. We responded to employees’ concerns, we set up a discussion forum because of it. The goal was not to lose any of our employees. Other companies haven’t acted this way, they were considering who to fire. We expected the outage to last 14 days, but there were a number of extensions. We agreed to demand only 70 percent and then 75 percent wages for our employees during the shutdown. This provided them a reasonable income and the company was able to afford it. However, the main goal of all of remains customers and cars being sold.
We would like to thank everyone at ŠKODA AUTO who stood in the front line.
Which measures were the most difficult for you to prepare?
Hlaváč: Although none of us had ever encountered a similar situation before, we made the right decisions from the start. Within an hour, we identified with Chairman Povšík the key jobs we could not do without and kept these employees working at the factory. It obviously concerned external workers as well. We have instructed employees to wear basic protective equipment, to behave appropriately in the situation. There have been a number of complicated negotiations, but our joint decisions and rules have produced immediate results. All managers held the same line.
Why are the current measures stricter than those required by the Czech government?
Wojnar: It’s easy to be wise after the event. Together, we took on a great deal of responsibility and had a number of concerns – what will become of the company, the employees, health protection etc. No one knew how the coronavirus infection would spread. Nevertheless, our decisions proved to be the right ones. We also needed to buy time because human health and economic interests can’t be pitted against each other. Not only were we in contact with epidemiologists, but they were also interested in how we approached the pandemic. We became an example for many other companies and the public. Responsibility, determination and a unified approach have paid off for us. However, I appeal to everyone to remain cautious.
Povšík: ŠKODA is the world within a world. I feel most safe in the company. We keep an order on the workplace and we can adopt new habits. I'm happy when I see how people handle it. To understand the measures, I tell them that others also don't have to wear work shoes outside but they do at their workplace. It works the same with anti-covid measures. Gradually, however, we are loosening the measures, trying to make things easier for people.
The summer holidays will soon begin, and our employees will be leaving “a world within a world”. What should they be careful of?
Hlaváč: We asked them to think about themselves and their surroundings, so I hope they’ll keep that in mind. What I’m a little nervous about is various media suggesting that everything is OK already. I hope that the situation will not worsen when people in Europe begin to travel. The moment we find out that an epicentre of the disease is forming somewhere with our employees concentrated there, we would have to intervene immediately. Just like in March, when we slowed down holiday allowances. That is why we have created joint measures to support domestic tourism. (More information on this topic can be found in the online version of ŠKODA Mobil under the Holiday section.)
Povšík: It is about freedom, but also about the personal responsibility of each person and his caution. We have decided that in a pandemic we will not exacerbate the problem by selling tours with support by the social fund. We also discussed a lot how to approach the traditional children’s camps. That’s why I sat down with Štěpán Lacina to talk about the pros and cons, and he really managed to coordinate the 2020 camps. Beautiful experiences await children as in previous years. Preparations are now underway, and the parents know the conditions. I am proud that in the current situation we have decided to organize children’s camps.
What would a second wave of the disease mean for the car company, and how would we react?
Wojnar: The concept of responsibility runs through this whole interview. We advise people to be deliberate and cautios. They should consider whether to travel abroad, especially to risk areas. They need to see what this could mean. Does it mean a health risk or quarantine? Holidays in the Czech Republic are definitely a good alternative. At the same time, however, I believe that if the coronavirus reappears in the company, we are prepared to react quickly. We have the measures and all the resources we need.
Povšík: No one currently knows if there will be a second wave. The development of the vaccine is crucial. However, we must learn to live with COVID-19, as with other diseases. When a freckle appears on my hand, the doctor removes it and my hand continues to work. We do our homework. We do everything to ensure top employee health protection. I was also pleased that we helped others in this situation as well. The strength of our company and employees was shown in how we managed the whole situation.
Wojnar: I am also very happy that we helped others. The extraordinary ŠKODA AUTO employee collection for healthcare professionals is just one example. Many people helped and did their best for their communities in their free time. ŠKODA has a great chance to show that, as a brand, it can come out of the whole situation even stronger. RED

Production in India resumes
SAVWIPL restarts production at both Indian plants
ollowing the shutdown that was in effect because of the coronavirus pandemic, ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) has resumed operations in Aurangabad and Pune. Work has resumed on preparations of the production of pre-series cars within the INDIA 2.0 project. The carmaker has restarted in full compliance with regulations of local authorities and is subject to extensive safety measures. In order to ensure employees’ health, a safety protocol with 60 measures prepared in coordination with experts was applied at the company’s manufacturing facilities, logistics areas and offices.
Gurpratap Boparai
SAVWIPL Managing Director
The post-COVID-19 era will have challenges new and old; however, we need to look ahead with renewed optimism. By restarting production, we will be in a better position to react to market demands and consumer needs. Over the past few weeks, we have been working closely with the government, the local administration and our medical team to develop a ‘Safe Production and Safe Office concept’ and have it implemented in our operations.
In Aurangabad, where the new ŠKODA SUPERB is being produced, operations began in a single shift on May 20. At the same time, the plant gradually ramped up the production of engines and Audi and VW cars.
In addition, SAVWIPL has intensified work on preparing the Pune plant to start producing the new models as part of the INDIA 2.0 project and has accelerated steps to start production of the first pre-series SUVs on the MQB A0 IN platform.
Help behind the gates of our plants
As a responsible corporate citizen, SAVWIPL has provided financial and material support to health professionals fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and supported the distribution of food packets and dry rations in rural areas. Employees, with the support of the unions, pitched in to collect over CZK 3.7 million to acquire full-features ventilators for hospitals in Aurangabad, Pune and Mumbai. We reported on this in the May issue of ŠKODA Mobil. RED
CZK 120,000 (386,000 INDIAN RUPEES) WAS COLLECTED AMONGST MANAGERS AND EMPLOYEES OF THE LOGISTICS DEPARTMENT. THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT ON SUPPORTING EIGHT CHILDREN’S HOMES IN INDIA, SPECIFICALLY TO BUY FOOD PACKETS.
Logistics challenges
As far as the Indian plants in Pune and Aurangabad are concerned, the Logistics team provides over 10,000 parts for pre-series and series production, as well as regular shipments of cars to more than 200 dealers. How were its departments preparing for the start of production during the pandemic? RED
Logistics in the Indian region
“The coronavirus pandemic has partly paralysed supplies, and brought in a number of challenges in providing parts, transporting goods (sea, air and road transportation) etc. We have taken a number of new measures to ensure production continuity”, says Tomáš Rais.
Program planning
The team focused on establishing production models and adjusted work schedules in line with the applicable government regulations to arrive at an optimal solution. They also intensified communication with third parties to continue the production in the best possible way.
Pre-series
This plan included the pre-series of the first SUVs to be made in Pune. The team focused on resuming the deliveries of parts from suppliers, including alternatives, to ensure the start of production in time.
Disposition
This department increased the frequency of risk assessments, focused on monitoring deliveries and analysed possible issues. At the same time, it addressed manpower availability in the supply chain (drivers, service workers etc.). “In the future, we will focus on reducing rental costs for container seizures, air travel, scrapping or service providers such as customs and transportation staff”, adds Rajesh Mishra.
Logistics planning
The team dealt with developing packaging for future projects, planning work facilities, securing local resources, building infrastructure.
Operational logistics
The department has taken care of a sufficient number of employees coming “on board”. In view of the situation, we prepared a comprehensive “Safe Logistics” programme to monitor all logistics processes and devised a number of safety measures to prevent the virus from spreading in both Indian plants.

Efficient production in the forge
The new-generation crankshaft in group engines helps to comply with emission limits
he new generation of the 1.0 TSI evo engine has taken into account the requirements by the developers involved in reducing the weight of individual parts. The team from the PKG/3 – Forge Technology department went in this direction during the production of the new crankshaft, and production itself started in May. Thanks to improvements in the forging shape, we have saved 0.5 kg of material per part. Thus, the PKG/2 – Forge department continued the long tradition of producing engine parts at the Mladá Boleslav plant. The forge has been producing crankshafts for the entire Group for 22 years.
2,200
pieces are produced every day by a new forging line
8.7
kilogrammes is how much the new crankshaft weighs
In the course of the previous two years, the Forge has been preparing for the arrival of the new EA211 crankshaft series. As part of the modernisation of the production line, it created a modern heat treatment concept of forging by using natural cooling of the part in the rack. The technical solution that was used not only yielded energy savings but also an increase in production efficiency. The 1.0 TSI evo crankshaft forgings are made on a 3,500-tonne forging press, which is part of a fully automatic line where eight robots handle the hot part. The forged piece itself is made of micro-alloyed steel, which enters the process chain in the shape of a bar and is inductively heated to a temperature of 1,290 °C for forging. A 100% dimensional inspection of the crankshaft is performed by the operator at the laser measuring station (the device was developed by the carmaker’s employees in cooperation with the supplier to meet the heavy industry requirements and by following new trends in measuring parts). The new crankshaft type further adds to the traditional engine parts production in the ŠKODA AUTO. RED
Pioneers in innovation
Gearbox production department in Mladá Boleslav uses industrial vision for quality improvement
It is a device with camera sensors that help to detect potentially faulty parts in the production of MQ 100 and MQ 200 manual gearboxes. They offer an affordable but effective solution. The first sensor in Components Production was used by the PKH/4 - MQ Transmission Technology department. The application was introduced here into the pre-assembly line of the pinion of the MQ 100 gearbox, where they check the presence of the 5th-speed synchronous clutch stopper plate. The sensor detects the contour of the object by comparing it with the contour of one or more models in the reference image. “The solution has proved to be very successful, and since the price of the sensors and their implementation is approximately dozens of thousands of crowns, we’ve started to expand it”, says Michal Alexa, a PKH/4 transmission optimisation specialist.
IFM sensors in gearbox production
Currently, this department operates a total of six sensors to check the correctness of the performed operations, the presence of identical parts or their completeness during assembly. “We use them, for example, to control the honing operation, both on the 1st and 2nd speed wheels and on the reverse gearing on the drive shaft”, says Alexa. Further applications are currently being prepared. Sensors from IFM electronic consist of optical sensors that are directly connected to the machine on the assembly line and can stop the progress of a non-conforming part in case an error is detected. “We are using two types of sensors for this – contour and pixel counter”, explains Alexa. The contour sensor is an ideal solution for applications where the same shape of the inspected object is repeated. Pixel counter is used when the monitored objects have a different shape, size, color or shadow. “These are effective control cells that react immediately and, thus, automatically increase production quality”, says Alexa. ow are we to conceive of this? The carmaker contributes to nature thriving not only in the vicinity of Mladá Boleslav but also around other production plants. At the same time, green areas are not only used to please the eye but also contribute to a healthy work environment, microclimate and clean air, reduce dust, absorb CO2 and increase humidity.
“We are planting where the infrastructure and our intended construction projects allow it”, explains Luděk Holub from the PSZ/42 – Infrastructure Operations department. “We are also cooperating with experts. For example, a certified arborist recommends the most suitable tree species by taking into consideration the location and climatic conditions”, he adds.
It’s like mowing 50 pitches
The carmaker takes care of green areas both on its own premises and surroundings. “At the Mladá Boleslav plant, for example, we are taking care of 787 trees, 19,115 m2 of shrubs and almost a quarter of a million square metres of grassy areas. Outside the car company premises, it’s almost half this number”, says Holub. Some trees are indeed valuable, especially Chinese metasequoias and mulberries – both black and white. The green area that ŠKODA AUTO is taking care of is constantly increasing, and last year alone, the carmaker planted 97 trees, 3,277 shrubs and 6,200 flowers. “We regularly water recently planted trees and shrubs, but since this is not enough in the era of climate change, we are deploy irrigation bags in many places. In addition, we protect the bark of new trees from damage caused by the thermal impact and apply the Arboflex coating, which strengthens vitality”, explains Holub.
Taking the scientific greenery path
Every autumn, the PSZ/42 department conducts a dendrological survey, whose results are also available in digital format. Based on this survey, we proceed with new tree and shrub planting or pruning. “We are organising this survey in cooperation with a certified dendrologist who examines the health and operational safety of woody plants. If the examination reveals that some trees have died or are dangerous to their surroundings, we remove them upon agreement with the Environmental Protection department. Of course, we then plant new and healthy pieces to replace them”, says Holub. Rani Tolimat
International Day for Biological Diversity
We are celebrating this day every year on 22 May. The VW Group is calling on all Group brands to scale up their support for projects to protect nature and preserve the diversity of species, especially insects. It also supports events organised in the region (flower meadow farming, insect hotels etc.), as well as global events, such as the afforestation of the Mexican Iztaccíhuatl–Popocatépetl National Park.
Even small changes help
The entire planet prepares to commemorate close to 50 years of nature conservation
ack in 1972, the UN General Assembly declared 5 July World Environment Day that raises awareness of environmental issues. This year’s main theme is the protection of biodiversity – natural diversity. You may have realised, especially at the time of a global pandemic that has affected everyone’s lives, that all of us are part of a delicate balance. At the same time, you can start protecting nature with some changes at work or on your commute. It doesn’t have to be anything radical. RED
Try following these guidelines
When commuting to work, keep proper tyre pressure and drive calmly and smoothly. If possible, use cruise control. Your car will burn less fuel and emit fewer harmful substances.
Drive less, go to work on foot or by bike or use public transportation. Alternatively, agree to give somebody a lift to use the car more efficiently.
Have your coffee or tea in an ordinary cup or thermo mug. Do not overwhelm nature unnecessarily with disposable cups.
Use plastic water bottles repeatedly, for example by refilling them with tap water.
Do not discard paper you have written on; use the flip side as well.
Switch off the lights in areas where you do not need it.
Switch off computers, monitors and other devices after business hours.

Internet for guests
On 1 June, FIO/34 employees launched the new Guest Access service
uests visiting the car factory can easily arrange for Internet access on their visit. They apply for it themselves through an internal contact person (an employee), who now just makes approvals. Doing so eliminates the need to create an employee request on a special portal, and the whole process is significantly simpler and faster than before.
New solution saving in numbers
12,148
up to this number of unique access credentials were previously created by internal contacts every year
1,000
hours spent doing so
12,000
sheets of paper with account names and passwords were printed
How a visitor sets up Internet access via Guest Access
They connect via Wi-Fi to the VW-Guest network, which automatically redirects them to the Guest portal.
They fill in the registration data and the e-mail address of the ŠKODA AUTO internal employee who approves their request for access.
The internal employee receives an e-mail with a link for approval and confirms access to the visitor with one click.
The visitor can see the status of their request from creation to approval in the Account Status field.
The visitor receives the login details via e-mail and text message.
After filling in the data, the visitor can start using the Internet.
Benefits
Self-service and user-friendly solution
Time saved for employees and visitors
The carmaker no longer needs to print login details

A clear overview, everything in one spot and on time
Modular visualisations provide employees with practical information during production
orkers monitor large screens at our production facilities virtually on a daily basis. They follow the instructions listed on them for assistance in individual production sections, and they can also view multilingual versions. In addition, they receive information from the system about the state of production in the section, the availability of individual parts etc. The operators have a constant overview with all the production flow information in one place.
Sophisticated system
Everything is taken care of by the modular visualisation system, the so-called mVIS, which was set up in 2018 as a joint project by Petr Hofman from FIB/6 – Shopfloor IT, Jan Kočí PK/1 – Component Production Management System and the Technical University of Liberec. In the area of Production and Logistics, the system has gradually replaced paper instructions and procedures at individual assembly lines. Employees have all the information together in one spot, and the error rate has also dropped. Therefore, the visualisation units show entire production processes, including details, sequence of individual steps and line strokes or give the operator a visual indication of the operation’s result, such as tightening. Using this tool, the employees can display instructions in a text or image format, call a foreman to help at a specific place or switch to other software apps in the form of a team board, maintenance information, internal communication etc. (see Modularity).
Where it started
It all began during the deployment of a new control system in the production of axles, where there was a demand to visualise production processes in a simple way by using various data sources. The system has been designed as a modular and universally usable one right from the start. Thanks to this, the units are being extended to other sections as well. One of the main advantages of this system is its uniformity – the environment and logic are the same on all modules, so employees do not have to learn various systems; everything looks and works the same, simple, intuitive way. “The system is modular, which means that it can be freely extended and adapted. It uses standard company logic, i.e. a three-tier architecture, micro services or PSB (production service bus, a system integration and open communication collection point – ed.) communication. The benefit is that units can be managed rapidly, including their registration and maintenance of displayed content. You can connect to the units and work on them remotely, and they can be restarted remotely. We can simulate various functionalities without having to connect to a real line, or compare the behaviour between the theoretical model and real operation. We are now preparing a new online media streaming function to stream important meetings to selected devices”, is how Vladimír Türkon from FIB/6 – Shopfloor IT describes the system. Štěpán Vorlíček
Touch screens
The mVIS system units form screens of several sizes. Eight-inch screens will soon be deployed in Hall M13 and replace the operation of summoning the foremen. The most common are 24-inch screens with an IP65 protection, which are located at production lines. These units can identify users using an MFA card or EKS chip. (If the person in question does not have sufficient privileges, they cannot continue and have to call a foreman to authorise them.) The largest 55-inch units are used by GK/2 Internal Communications to convey production trends and important company messages in the individual halls. All units are managed centrally, and each one automatically downloads tasks from the server.
Modularity
The Maintenance teams benefit from hardware modularity, thus saving valuable time. If an error occurs, the service technician simply plugs in the replacement unit and enters its position in the line for the unit to download all its tasks from the network within a few minutes. Everything continues, and the outage becomes virtually imperceptible. Internal Communication makes use of software modularity to inform employees, for example, during a break on identical screens about important and current coronavirus-related measures, benefits or grants etc.
Technical background
The 8- and 24-inch units are based on the Raspberry Pi 3 and 4, which are small single-board computers with a circuit board the size of a payment card and run on the Raspbian operating system. The large 55-inch drives work with Windows.
Dynamic and responsive tool
The user interfaces of the app for administration, visualisation and own tasks are always designed as one-page Web applications. They are also responsive and use the React JavaScript library, which Facebook created to develop its own pages. As far as the recent period is concerned, this is the world’s most dynamically developing responsive application model.

information screens in Kvasiny and Mladá Boleslav are currently used by the Internal Communications team

The Bell Tolls for Paperwork
We save our forests, set aside our stamps and also digitise in areas such as approvals of various structures
his also applies to the approval process for the planned structure of employee tariff classes in direct production. These are not tariff classes as such – it’s their structure that is approved every month. Everything has been done on paper so far, and the structure has been created based on approved operation standards. Just to give you an idea: It used to be an Excel spreadsheet with walls of text, various data and totals. These documents were printed, and then their approval started: stamps, signatures, handover between departments in person or via internal mail. The documents of one production facility amounted to approximately 90 sheets of paper, 180 stamps and 10 different signatures each month. Can you imagine how much time and effort has been wasted on printing, copying, scanning, distributing and archiving? Not to mention the cost of printer ink and paper.
But that is changing. As part of the SVP (ŠKODA Verbesserungsprozess), a project has been created to minimise red tape and paper waste. The whole approval process has undergone a thorough analysis to simplify and clarify everything and identify duplicate activities and outdated and unnecessary steps. Above all, everything now runs only electronically. The implementation was fast and cost-free, eliminating printing and copying, which is kind to nature, as well as the time and nerves of everyone involved – no more stamping, signing, running around, handing over, recollecting and archiving. Štěpán Vorlíček
Do you know that…
… the digitisation of the approval process has had a positive effect, especially on the teams of PSI – Industrial Engineering, PFx and the direct production facilities of all Czech plants? It has streamlined work in the SP/1 department and for our HR Business Partners and immediate supervisors in Production.
Logging into ŠKODA Space
Basic tips and instructions on how to access the portal from your home and your private phone
new Employee Portal has been available since January. But the coronavirus pandemic has shown that many of you still don’t know how to log into ŠKODA Space from home. That’s why we’re bringing you basic information on how to obtain your password, whom to contact if you are in doubt and how to access current internal information on the portal.
How to start
ŠKODA Space is accessed
via www.skodaspace.cz
To log in at basic level, you need to know your login details: username (DZC) + portal LDAP password. Your DZC can be found in your payslip. The LDAP password is used, for example, to log into interactive kiosks.
If you have both access credentials, continue logging into the Employee Portal. If you don’t know the password, you need to restore it.
If you want to get to the second level of security and view, for example, ePayment and other applications, use SMS authentication, PKI card, RSA token or OTP to log in.
What if I don’t know my LDAP password?
I use a company e-mail address or have my private e-mail registered with HR
1
Open the ŠKODA Space login screen.
2
Select the “I forgot my password” box.
3
You will receive a password recovery link with instructions in your inbox.
I don’t have a company
e-mail address and haven’t registered a private one anywhere1
You need to get a security code first.
2
Present yourself at the gate and ask for your LDAP password to be reset.
3
A Service Desk operator will set a new password for you and notify you by phone.
4
You must change your password after logging in for the first time.
If you work in operations without access to company PC and want to take full advantage of the functions of ŠKODA Space, it is worth registering your contact details with HR (You can also register your e-mail address at the accounting office). This will get you access from your home computer or mobile phone and at the same time to the second level of security. You’ll recieve notifications and SMS will to the registered contacts and you will easily display your payment, change password or other sensitive data.
How do I get the permanent option to change my LDAP password at any time?
You have to provide the HR with both a private e-mail (You can also register your e-mail address at the accounting office) for sending a password and a phone number if you need the two-factor login option, eg to display an electronic payroll.
↓
You have access to @SMART Applications.
↓
Enter @SMART Applications > My HR Data > Contact Details. Click on the red Edit box in the top right.
↓
In the Access to Secured Applications section, fill in the e-mail and phone box highlighted in red.
↓
You don’t have access to @SMART Applications.
↓
Contact the HR department – they will help you to enter contact details.
↓
This step will be done by an HR officer.
↓
You will receive a new LDAP password by e-mail and a text message on your phone for verification.
↓
If none of the options worked for you, contact your line manager to set your password through the UMS form.
Do you know that…
… the password is valid for one year and as such must consist of 12 characters and contain numbers and a capital letter?

How to maintain energy and health while working in a virtual environment
eople who spend more and more time in the digital world need to develop new and healthy habits. This will prevent the fatigue they feel from having virtual meetings. There are many reasons for this. They have a harder time recognising non-verbal communication and try harder not to have a negative effect – they wear the so-called “social mask”, which puts more pressure on them. Therefore, they should remember that meetings are used to discuss important information and not to compete over how households look or are designed. Most problems also relate to the fact that meetings sometimes follow each other without interruption. Then there is no time left for basic needs and relaxation, such as having lunch, water, coffee, going to the toilet, having some rest, concluding a meeting or moving on to the next topic.
Although the culture of virtual meetings is still developing, meetings without the possibility of at least five-minute breaks are inconsiderate to the participants’ mental health. Besides, tasks entered via video calls are significantly less likely to be completed: Around 30 percent needs to be re-entered because people forget the details and important information. Combining virtual meetings with offline work is ideal: You enter certain tasks by e-mail and request written answers or share a summary of replies before the virtual meeting takes place. RED
Virtually and without stress
Take a break of at least 5–10 minutes between meetings
Make time for lunch and undisturbed work in your calendar
Think of those you invite to your virtual meetings and don’t overwhelm them
When inviting people to meetings, negotiate a schedule
Don’t focus exclusively on online virtual communication – handle questions and answers via e-mail, too
Set aside some time to be offline

get to know KOMPAS
The new HR system will start operating on 24 July, and preparations for the transition to the HR software solution called KOMPAS are in full swing. In addition to the transfer of settings from the test to the productive system, users have also been acquainted with its functionalities. HR officers already passed the training as they had to prepare for the most changes. Managers will follow in July. They will learn how the innovation will make the management of personal and employee data easier and how they will use the management and employee self-service. One of the significant benefits they can use is to convert job vacancy announcements into a digital format.
Follow ŠKODA Space
Other employees will find a use for KOMPAS for simple and intuitive activities, so no personal training is needed. You can find the method for each step in the system on ŠKODA Space. The website at www.skoda-kompas.cz has also been operational since 14 May, and its captain character will guide you through in an entertaining and instructive way. RED

Document Classification
Document classification
Information under protection
Starting on 1 June, all created documents must include a security classification
he newly introduced Group standard aims to protect information in terms of confidentiality. As a result, the e-document templates in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint have been updated. The following overview will show you the rules for classifying documents in MS Office. RED
Secret
It applies to information that, if it fell into unauthorised hands, could prevent the company from meeting its goals in the long term. Therefore, it is subject to strict monitoring. A breach of confidentiality could result in a significant loss of customers, damaged reputation and massive deployment of a large number of people to repair the damage.
Examples: medical diagnosis data, camouflage information for specific models
Confidential
This classification is to be selected for documents whose disclosure to unauthorised persons could threaten product and project goals. Therefore, only a limited circle of eligible people should have access to them. Should such information leak to the public, measurable consequences can be expected, such as a loss of customers or a drop in sales.
Examples: budget plans, personal data on wages, roles and authorisations, audit reports
Internal
This category includes information that is used for the carmaker’s internal needs and is not publicly available. In the case of a breach of confidentiality, there is a risk of mild consequences. Internal documents can only be provided to those who need them to perform their tasks.
Examples: glossary, business e-mail addresses, department presentations, IT security rules
Public
It is information that the carmaker makes available to the media or publishes on the Internet. The publication or distribution of such classified documents must follow the rules of the relevant technical departments and requires the consent of the GK – Communications department.
Examples: press releases, product catalogue for customers
Follow the news
Rules for classifying other types of documents not included in the predefined templates are being prepared. You will find them later on the information website.

Not only the VW Group but also ŠKODA people empathise with protecting diversity in nature
n the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, the VW Group has invited the employees of all its brands to support nature conservation projects. ŠKODA AUTO has been helping many of them for several years within announced grants and Employee Collections. How did ŠKODA people fare?
Marta Kůrková (SEB/1)
Saved harbingers of spring
As a child, she would bring home cowslips dug up from the meadow to decorate the rock garden. As a result, she has them all over her garden today. When she went back to the meadow, however, she found the myriad cowslips were no more. So she decided for the so-called rescue transplant. Now she is waiting for the seeds to ripen to reseed the plants.
Have you already chosen the spots where to sow the cowslips?
Yesterday afternoon I went to see the meadow. I’d like to return the cowslips to roughly where they used to grow. It is a meadow near the Jizera River, in Zámostí, close to Krnsko. Cowslips used to grow near the shaft and along the electric poles. The meadow was already mown in there, and no cowslip leaves could be found.
What do you think would benefit our meadows?
We all know that meadows are plagued by herbicides and the way that hay is now dried. In the past, people would turn it over several times, spilling the seeds so herbs could grow and bloom again. We should remember that there’s no need to mow grass and grow the English lawn everywhere and under all circumstances. I also want to create a butterfly meadow in our village square – it only takes perseverance and the decision not to mow… We will hopefully see results within a year.
Milada Vrbová (GO)
Help for Boleslav
Milada has been leading the non-profit organisation ZO ČSOP Klenice for 16 years, which launched a challenge during the quarantine: Join us and pick up litter when you are taking a walk. It is a replacement for the nationwide “Clean the Czech Republic” events that have been cancelled, which ŠKODA AUTO has been supporting for a long time. The organisers were surprised by how many people took part in the event, both the public and the company’s employees. Nearby municipalities, such as Luštěnice and Vinařice, also participated in the clean-up event.
What did you do apart from the cleaning?
We revitalised a spring in the Vrch Baba nature reserve. Volunteers removed fallen wood from the spring and had it dug out and cleared with an excavator. One spring was led into shafts as a source of water and the other – a new one – was directed into the pool. We also dusted off the tradition of cleaning wells in Chlum. The two we have brought back to life have now been refilled, and they provide a valuable source of water to animals. We also installed a stork’s nest on a chimney in Debř, which is, to our great joy, already occupied. Helena Fričová

Ročník 2022
Ročník 2023
Success in times of challenges
In mid-November, around 300 managers gathered at the Škoda Museum for a two-day meeting with the top management of the MMK. The opening session was addressed by Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, and Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union. The theme of transformation guided the entire event, which included seminars, discussions and updates from various areas of the carmaker.
Compact but still spacious
The Kylaq, Škoda’s latest and smallest model, was unveiled in November. Measuring less than 4 metres in length, it targets the popular Indian market segment, with prices starting from CZK 220,000. The Kylaq introduces the new Modern Solid design language to India, along with the largest boot in its class and a wide range of equipment focused on safety, including six airbags.
IVET 2024 Innovation Fair
The 8th edition of IVET showcased 36 innovation themes, underscoring Škoda Auto’s commitment to practical advancements. New was a section dedicated to the Indian market and contributions from Group colleagues. The event also featured the presentation of the Elroq. From Simply Clever solutions to technical breakthroughs, the fair continued the tradition of innovations designed with customers in mind.
Chronicle of 2024
In 2024, Škoda Auto continued to launch new models while modernising its bestsellers. The carmaker also adopted a new design language, opened the Laurin & Klement Kampus, supported numerous charitable and sustainable projects, achieved many successes and celebrated several important anniversaries. Discover the highlights from the past year in this year’s Chronicle.
Kronika roku 2024
V roce 2024 Škoda Auto pokračovala v uvádění nových modelů a také v modernizaci bestsellerů. Automobilka navíc přešla na nový designový jazyk Modern Solid, otevřela Laurin & Klement Kampus, podpořila nespočet dobročinných i udržitelných projektů, dosáhla mnoha úspěchů a oslavila několik významných výročí. To nejdůležitější z právě končícího roku se dočtete v letošní kronice.
Launching a new era in India
Four metres is a critical threshold in the Indian automobile market and its segment with this maximum length accounts for nearly 30%. Škoda Auto is entering this segment with the new compact SUV, the Kylaq, which is developed and manufactured in India specifically to cater to the preferences of local customers. This launch follows the earlier introductions of the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan.
Conquering the French market
More than half a million visitors flocked to the Paris Motor Show in October, where global carmakers were in attendance. The Škoda Auto stand featured the new electric Elroq, which garnered much attention. Other cars from Škoda’s portfolio were also on display, including a specially modified fourth-generation Superb for the Tour de France race director and the Fabia RS Rally2 competition special.
Reducing software complexity
The second of the Brand Group Core’s six strategic packages is titled Reducing Complexity and focuses primarily on software. The increasing number of drives and assistance systems and the integration of other vehicle functions have led to a complex array of software variants. The aim of reducing the number of software variants is to decrease costs and enhance cybersecurity.
A look inside the battery
The new tomography centre in Hall M6 allows for non-destructive testing of the quality of MEB’s electric platform batteries. Škoda Auto inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility in June this year, and there may not be another facility like it in any other carmaker. Historically, the industry has employed computed tomography technology, or CT scanning, mainly for smaller parts.
Pohled do útrob baterie
