First Months of Second Battery Line
With its second production line for electric car batteries on the MEB platform, Škoda Auto has become one of the largest manufacturers of these batteries in the VW Group.
The assembly line – the second battery production line for electric cars on the MEB Group platform – started production last December. It was built by the Slovak company Matador, and several improvements based on the experiences with the first MEB line, producing MEB batteries since April 2022, were integrated. During the first months of production, employees from the PKP – Platform Production and PPK – Powertrain Production Planning departments focused on preparing the line for the production of new battery types while also gradual ramping up capacity.
In May, a second shift was introduced, and after the collective holiday, the line started producing enhanced MEB batteries. Furthermore, in August, a third shift started working on the line as planned. The line’s capacity in a three-shift system is 500 batteries per day, and it employs 120 employees, along with additional direct and indirect staff (e.g. from the PL – Brand Logistics department). Together with the first line, Škoda Auto currently has an official production capacity of 1,520 MEB batteries per day.
“In the first week after the launch of the third shift, the line produced 2,226 batteries, nearly its full weekly capacity – an excellent achievement. In total, together with the first line, we produced 7,261 MEB batteries during that week. This makes Mladá Boleslav one of the largest MEB battery producers within the entire VW Group. We supply batteries not only for the Enyaq model in Hall M13 but also for other Group brands manufactured in Zwickau, Emden, Hannover and Dresden. Last but not least, we supply batteries to Cologne, where Ford produces its Explorer electric model based on the MEB platform in partnership with VW,” adds Martin Vedral, project manager for MEB batteries at PKV – Project Management, Pre-series Component Centre.
