Capacity Building and Cyber Security
Like every year, several important activities took place over the company-wide summer holiday
his year’s activities included rebuilds, refurbishments, technology upgrades and construction activities with a focus on electromobility, implementation measures and cyber security in production to comply with UNECE (United Nations Economic Commission for Europe) regulations. In addition, a number of longer-term construction activities at all plants needed to be coordinated. These activities included, among others, construction work in the halls to modify the process units, the reconstruction of the road from Gate 13 and a modification of the local car park.
This year’s activities focused on electromobility, implementation measures and production cyber security.
New capacities for electromobility
The activities of the PPF-K – Body Shop Planning and Electronic Equipment department in Mladá Boleslav mainly related to increasing the electromobility capacity and flexibility in Hall M12. The new Body Shop M12L was already commissioned before the company-wide holiday, which allowed the start of demolition work of the lines in the Body Shop M12B, as well as work related to increasing the capacity of electric vehicles (800 bodies/day) and adjusting the lines’ flexibility to integrate future models.
The PPF-L – Paint Shop Planning department replaced a robotic station on one of the two threshold protection spraying lines in Paint Shop A. This is equipped with the new Flat Stream technology, which significantly reduces the amount of waste material (for a description, see the issue of ŠKODA Mobil 10/2021). The same type of technology was implemented in Paint Shop B, where the first step of modifications took place to increase the existing capacity and meet the growing demand for electric car production. On the cavity preservation line in D16, two robotic stations have replaced the demanding human work, and the application of wax to the doors is now automated.
The PPK – Powertrain Production Planning department integrated the next generation of the 1.0 TSI EVO2 into the engine machining and assembly lines in preparation for pre-production. In Vrchlabí, this department has started modifying the test states for cyber security.

Numerous new developments in Kvasiny
The activities in Kvasiny were mainly related to the rebuilding of lines with regard to cyber security in production and the integration of additional models. Welding Plant A started the integration of the production of the OCTAVIA Liftback model. In Welding Plant B, the lines were modified for the production of the successor to the KODIAQ.
In the local paint shop, the cataphoresis coating material (KTL) was replaced and the associated technology was modified, with the original being replaced by new “green technology” that will also be deployed next year at the Mladá Boleslav Paint Shop A.
Under the coordination of the PPF-M – Assembly Shop Planning department, important activities for the transition to the new electronic architecture (IBN) and cyber security in production were carried out on the assembly lines. For example, on Assembly Line II, a new section of the hall was added to accommodate the transfer of technology for electronic car commissioning, and the overhead conveyor was expanded by 28 hangers to a total of 45. This also entailed the replacement of the single-wheeled 30 cm-wide link conveyor with a 250 cm-wide plastic one. The expansion of Assembly Line II created the finishing space for the construction of a new test line. Construction work began on Assembly Line I to prepare for the extension in the future KB 6 and the extension of the overhead conveyor, which will be important for the electronic commissioning of the cars.
Challenging tasks for the service staff
The PSZ – Central Technical Service department successfully carried out 31 reconstructions and repairs during the company-wide holiday, including two projects at the Kvasiny plant. In addition, it provided 11 operational interventions, including the production of 89 parts on standby, such as a new hydraulic cylinder sleeve for the injection moulding line in Pressing Shop M15. A very demanding operation was the renewal of the dryer heat exchangers in Paint Shop A, Hall M17 (topcoat zone A0). In particular, the handling of a 500-tonne capacity truck crane and the positioning of the large equipment through three roof openings were very complicated.
