Happening at ŠKODA AUTO
Premium partner of the Czech-German conference
On Monday, 17 October, the Czech-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised the German Czech Economic Forum, and ŠKODA AUTO became its premium partner. Keynote speakers at the event included German Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck and ŠKODA CEO Klaus Zellmer, who spoke about the transformation of the automotive industry and the future of the carmaker. One of the panel discussions was also attended by Johannes Neft, Board Member for Technical Development. ŠKODA AUTO had a stand offering a comprehensive view of sustainability. In addition, a cross-section of the OCTAVIA COMBI was on display to present technical solutions for future projects.
Change in IT management
On 1 October, Alexander Eisl (pictured) became the new head of FI – Information Technology. He replaces Klaus Blüm, who has now taken on the role of Head of Projects and Software within the VW Group. Eisl has experience from Siemens and PwC. He joined the VW Group in 2016, and prior to his engagement at ŠKODA AUTO, he held the position of Senior Vice President of Information Systems at MAN Truck & Bus SE, where his tasks included building MAN Digital Services, as well as agile software development at the Munich and Lisbon plants.

Social Responsibility
Festival provides city decorations
With the support of the ŠKODA AUTO Foundation, the premiere edition of the City=Gallery street art festival took place in Mladá Boleslav. More than 50 new works of art were created at seven locations in the city, including six large-scale murals. On 3 October, children from the Children’s Centre of the Claudian Hospital put the finishing touches to this year’s event. With the help of volunteers, they completed a colourful mural by street artist Nowis, and thanks to them, the previously unsightly concrete wall at the hospital was covered with a motif of a mountain meadow in bloom.
ire truck for volunteer firefighters
The volunteer fire brigade from Podhůří in Vrchlabí has received significant help since ŠKODA AUTO donated them a Tatra 815 fire truck with a tank that can hold up to 8,000 litres of water. The handover ceremony took place on 29 September in front of the main gate of the Vrchlabí plant and in the presence of its manager, Ivan Slimák, and other carmaker representatives. The unit that will use the new tanker is part of the integrated rescue system and is one of the first to intervene in the event of a threat to the ŠKODA AUTO plant.

VISION 7S
ŠKODA cars stand out for their practical use for families. We don’t doubt that the VISION 7S will be just that – with a practical body and pure electric drive. It just needs a full seven seats.
Fresh and striking look for the car
Very spacious cabin
Good view from the car
Large rotating display
Classic mechanical buttons for controlling a range of functions
Magnets for attaching phones or tablets to the rear seats
The car is not a full seven-seater, the middle seat in the second row is a better child seat
The concept is likely to become ŠKODA’s most expensive car
Infrastructure
Professionals from the dynamic IT sector have brand-new premises in one of the most modern buildings in Prague. The carmaker opened its new offices in the AFI City Tower on the site of a former brownfield in the Vysočany neighbourhood on 17 October. The offices were designed with low operating costs, sustainability and a healthy working environment in mind. The carmaker occupies five floors in the high-rise building, which is the first building in Prague equipped with an air purification system based on ionisation. One of the floors is dedicated to the 42 Prague educational institute, while the others will be occupied by IT, finance and accounting professionals who were previously in several different locations in the capital.
200
new IT jobs will be offered by ŠKODA AUTO in Prague over the next three years.
Idea management
SMART ENERGY ZEBRA
The SP/2 – Idea Management unit, with the support of the PSU – Environmental and Job Protection unit, has launched a new incentive campaign, SMART Energy ZEBRA, for all tariff employees. The campaign aims to support ŠKODA AUTO’s long-term efforts to optimise energy use. The aim is to motivate employees to actively participate in energy conservation (reducing consumption, avoiding waste, promoting waste heat recycling etc.) by submitting improvement suggestions. Join the campaign and submit your suggestions by 31 March 2023 to help ŠKODA to manage energy efficiently. We will reward your efforts with an extraordinary 20% increase in rewards for quantifiable ZEBRA proposals.
The terms and conditions of the campaign can be found in the ZEBRA section on ŠKODA Space.
Sustainability
How to run a successful and sustainable business
Under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ESG Leadership Conference was held on 18 October under the heading: “Are Successful Business Leaders in the Czech Republic Acting Sustainably?” One of the keynote speakers was Christian Schenk, Board Member for Finance and IT, who outlined the carmaker’s approach to the topic of social and environmental sustainability, which is emphasised in the company-wide NEXT LEVEL – ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030. He also introduced the new Sustainability Advisory Committee and used concrete examples to show that ŠKODA emphasises sustainability throughout its entire product lifecycle. This year’s fifth annual conference also marked the 30th anniversary of the Business Leaders Forum.

‘The Way of Life’ film wins accolades
The January premiere of the ENYAQ COUPÉ RS iV was accompanied by a short film telling the story of a woman looking back on her coming of age in Czechoslovakia in the 1980s. In particular, the film shows her desire for freedom and personal independence, as well as her extraordinary relationship with the ŠKODA brand, and concludes with her setting off on a journey in a sporty new electric SUV. ŠKODA AUTO placed third with the film at the Golden Drum festival for creative, marketing and advertising professionals in Rovinj, Croatia. At the 2022 Muse Awards in New York City, the clip won platinum awards in the Short Film, Diversity and Inclusion, Cinematography and Automotive Film categories.
The Police of the Czech Republic received over 40 SUPERB COMBI vehicles with a top speed of 250 km/h for motorway surveillance. Since 1993, ŠKODA AUTO has delivered more than 20,000 cars to police officers.

Great Opportunity for ŠKODA AUTO
The carmaker is preparing to enter the dynamic automotive market in Vietnam, where it will offer its first Czech cars in 2023
he automotive market in Vietnam has the greatest potential in the entire Southeast Asian region. In addition, this country has concluded a free trade agreement with the European Union that will scrap most tariffs starting in 2030. These tariffs are already gradually decreasing. In addition, there is the country’s geographical proximity to India, where the carmaker produces cars specifically developed for the region.
We see great growth potential in Vietnam. Moreover, the Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union, together with the EVFTA free trade agreement, creates very favourable economic and political conditions.
Martin Jahn
Board Member for Sales and Marketing
All of this strongly favours ŠKODA AUTO’s entry into the Vietnamese market, which has now been completed after good work from numerous departments. This step also fulfils the company-wide NEXT LEVEL – ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030, of which internationalisation is an integral part.
The first cars will head from Europe to Vietnamese customers next year. In 2024, the cars will be assembled directly in Vietnam. Cooperation with one of the country’s largest private companies, Thanh Cong Motor Vietnam (TC Motor), which has many years of experience in the automotive industry and employs more than 5,000 people, is essential for market entry. It is also active in real estate, industrial zones and hotels. TC Motor, which is based in the capital city of Hanoi, will be responsible for local distribution and production. “In TC Motor, we have found a strong and reliable partner to quickly and successfully establish ourselves in Vietnam. We’re convinced that our model portfolio perfectly matches the wishes of local customers, and we’re looking forward to starting sales early next year,” says Martin Jahn, Board Member for Sales and Marketing.
Assembly of CKD models
Construction of the plant in Quang Ninh province in the north of the country is already underway and is due for completion in the first half of 2024. Subsequently, there will be the assembly of CKD (completely knocked down – ed.) of the KUSHAQ and SLAVIA models, which are produced in India on the MQB-A0-Global platform, for which ŠKODA AUTO is responsible inside the VW Group (more about the platform here).
For ŠKODA AUTO, entering the Vietnamese market is the next logical step in its internationalisation strategy. Our attractive model portfolio offers our customers the right products to leverage our strengths in this highly dynamic market.
Klaus Zellmer
ŠKODA AUTO CEO
Vietnamese customers will be able to order the compact SUV from the first half of 2024, with the sedan following in the fourth quarter. A 16,000 m2 dispatch hall is now being built in Pune, India, to prepare the sub-assemblies for export. ŠKODA cars will be sold in Vietnam by a network of local partners. The first outlets are planned for Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, as both cities account for the vast majority of new car sales in Vietnam. ŠKODA AUTO expects to rapidly expand its network to 50 partners. In the first phase, the KAROQ and KODIAQ will be the first models offered next year, followed by the OCTAVIA and SUPERB. These models will then be joined by locally produced models, and the potential and possibility of implementing electric cars after 2025 is also being analysed. The carmaker expects an annual potential of 30,000 cars sold and 40,000 cars starting in 2030. ŠKODA AUTO is also preparing a localisation strategy that could help export locally produced cars in the future.
History of our relations with Vietnam
The carmaker established ties with this Asian country as far back as the socialist era in Czechoslovakia. During the Vietnam War from 1955 to 1975, AZNP employees organised fundraising events and even donated blood. Already in the late 1950s, Vietnamese apprentices were heading to Mladá Boleslav, and the cooperation deepened in the 1970s. In the 1980s, the Vietnamese formed the largest group of foreign workers. As late as 1990, 1,635 out of a total of 19,828 employees came from Vietnam. ED

Satisfactory Visit
Three years after the launch of INDIA 2.0, the full ŠKODA AUTO Board arrived at the local plants
his year, ŠKODA will deliver the most cars to customers in India since it entered the market, which will become one of its largest. In addition, it is growing faster than the automotive market there, thus increasing its market share. The Czech carmaker’s full Board of Directors, which headed to India in mid-October, was thus able to praise all colleagues involved in the INDIA 2.0 project for their achievements.
The main programme awaited the visitors from Mladá Boleslav on 12 October at the Pune plant, where the Board was welcomed by Piyush Arora, Managing Director of ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL). “The arrival of all members of the ŠKODA AUTO Board of Directors is not only a significant milestone in our journey but also an affirmation of the confidence in us as a team and in the growth potential of the Indian market,” emphasised P. Arora.
This was followed by a speech delivered by the CEO Klaus Zellmer, an interactive discussion with all Board members, and finally, questions from the employees. “I have already had several virtual meetings with my colleagues in India, but now I’ve finally been able to visit this vibrant and exciting country for the first time, and I’m very excited about it. The results of INDIA 2.0 are really great. The impressive enthusiasm, perseverance and flexibility that the SAVWIPL team has shown is exactly the kind of mindset we need in these challenging times,” said K. Zellmer in his speech. They were interested, for example, in the semiconductor shortage, which continues to complicate operations in India as well. However, the carmaker expects the situation to improve in the coming months and no longer have a negative impact on production. Car safety was also addressed, especially the excellent results in the current Global NCAP crash tests of the KUSHAQ and Volkswagen Taigun. Carmaker officials gave assurance that Indian customers will always be able to expect the highest lafety standards from the Group’s cars. Electromobility is also a topic of growing interest in India, and SAVWIPL wants to be a part of this. ED

Innovative technology at the dispatch centre
ŠKODA AUTO’s Expedition Centre in Hall U33 handles complex material deliveries to foreign production sites
t dispatches hundreds of different parts every day and packs parts for two plants in India. Parts for the KODIAQ, OCTAVIA and SUPERB are sent to Aurangabad, parts for the KUSHAQ, SLAVIA and the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus are sent to Pune, along with parts for the 1.0 and 1.5 TSI engines, which are manufactured directly in India.
With the INDIA 2.0 project, the number of parts that need to be transported has increased by 800 in the case of small pallets, the so-called KLT (from the German ‘Klein Ladungs Träger’ – ed.). With the project launching in 2020, the PLL – Logistics Planning department and PLC – CKD Centre were looking for solutions to increase capacity and make the current warehousing more efficient. “The result was the creation of a flexible, automated and ergonomic warehouse with a higher capacity of KLT pallets without the requirement for additional space. This created an automated vertical KLT warehouse, which the dispatch centre refers to as kardex (after the company that supplied the storage system – ed.),” explains Martin Beneš of PLC department.
A single unit can pick up or stack a pallet in 52 seconds. Thus, the daily “turnover” can reach up to 10,500 KLT pallets. A total of eight such blocks are now installed in the dispatch centre, and each of them can store 1,000 KLT pallets. In other words, the maximum capacity will be 8,000 KLT pallets, which is 5,400 more than in the past.
“An important part of the project is not only saving space but also improving both the ergonomics of delivering goods to the operator and system support. The employees can use modern equipment, such as hand-held scanners and screens dedicated to each of the warehouse blocks, which display information about ongoing activities. The manipulator allows workers to handle pallets quickly and in an ergonomic way, which is the main benefit of this innovative solution at the Mladá Boleslav dispatch centre,” says Libor Šrámek, Head of CKD Centre. Women to Women
A new Volkswagen dealership employs only women and is aimed primarily at a female clientele
he Volkswagen Passenger Cars India brand, a subsidiary of ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited, has opened its first-ever all-female dealership in the Indian city of Coimbatore in partnership with a local dealer, Ramani Cars Pvt. Ltd. The idea behind the creation of the so-called All-Women City Store was to create a platform to promote talented women in the automotive sector, along with diversity, equity and inclusion. Moreover, a steadily growing number of women in India are interested in buying a car, and the new store offers them an exclusive and welcoming environment. The initiative also aims to support women in the automobile dealership network and leadership positions and improve the customer experience in the market. The dealership employs more than 35 women from management to security, showing that they are not afraid to take matters into their own hands. “Talented women play a central role in shaping the future of the automotive industry. We are confident that these more than 35 women will take car retailing to new heights with their efforts,” said Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, at the dealership opening. Day full of joy
One Sunday in August, employees and their families headed to the ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen Private Limited (SAVWIPL) production plant. More than 500 participants enjoyed the entertainment programme, which allowed the carmaker to join in the ongoing “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” celebration of 75 years of India’s independence. After a welcome by the plant management and a group warm-up, it was time for the Sports Run. Participants took to the roughly 4-kilometre course in five groups divided by age, with the top three from each of the runs receiving an official award and a medal. The sports part of the programme was followed by a cultural part – employees and their family members playing musical instruments and singing. The “selfie corner”, where everyone could take pictures with SAVWIPL products, was also very popular. The purpose of the event was to enhance the well-being of the plant workers and strengthen their employee experience. Judging by the way everyone was enjoying the programme, it succeeded. ED

KUSHAQ is heading to the Gulf countries
For the first time ever, ŠKODA cars produced in India will be exported to another market
nother milestone for the Indian market, where ŠKODA AUTO is also responsible for the activities of other VW Group brands, is coming in October/November. The KUSHAQ compact SUV, which was developed on the special MQB-A0-IN platform for the Indian market, will also be exported by the carmaker to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries – namely the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.
26,000
KUSHAQ cars have gone out to customers since the model’s launch on the Indian market between July 2021 and the middle of this year.
This is the first ŠKODA car to be manufactured entirely in India and to go to another market. It follows on from the Volkswagen Taigun and Virtus models, which are also produced by ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) and have already started exporting to other global markets. The KUSHAQ had its world premiere in March last year, and its production at the Pune plant began in June. This May, a sporty version of the KUSHAQ MONTE CARLO was added. This was followed in September by the launch of a left-hand-drive version, which could be headed for export markets in countries where, unlike in India, cars drive on the right-hand side of the road. That is the case in the Gulf as well.
“The KUSHAQ was designed with the requirements of our customers in India and around the world in mind, and we’re confident that this stylish, well-equipped, robust and attractive SUV will open doors for SAVWIPL in new markets and regions,” stated Piyush Arora, Managing Director of SAVWIPL. Exports form an essential part of the INDIA 2.0 strategy and enable SAVWIPL to maintain an efficient production ratio for the domestic and export market. ED

Learning about other cultures
Employee exchange stays deepen cooperation with India
he Czech carmaker is deepening its links with the Indian region, for which it is responsible through its subsidiary in the VW Group, ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited. It recently launched an exchange stay programme to improve the synergy, transfer of information and processes and facilitate mutual understanding between employees from different regions. “Up until now, we used to go to India on business trips, but they always had a specific task. In the case of exchange visits, we want to follow a more systematic path that will help us to link the Czech Republic and India more intensively,” says Jaroslav Novák, expert coordinator of the ST – Comprehensive Care for MGMT, Employer Branding department, who is in charge of exchange visits. According to him, several departments can join the programme. “So far, sending people to India has been the domain of Production and Logistics, but we are now strengthening the People and Culture area and others,” explains J. Novák. Exchange Programme can vary in duration; for HR, it will be about three months, but Logistics, for example, sends their employees over for 16 months. It always depends on the nature of the job and the specific needs. Recently, Karishma Tapaswi and Rahul Dabi came from India to the Czech Republic as a part of “Talent Exchange” program, for three-months, while Martin Horák and Petr Dočekal went to India for two and a half months.
For exchange stays,we want to follow a path that will help us to link the Czech Republic and India more intensively.
Under this Exchange Programme, the participants continue their “standard” work while also working on a specific project in the country of assignment and learning about its culture. “We could call it ŠKODA at Play, although we’re actually talking about intensive work. However, it’s mainly about getting to know the environment, the way of working and communication, processes and culture in a foreign country thousands of kilometres away,” says J. Novák. “We can explain some things to each other, but we understand them only when we experience and try them ourselves,” he adds.
The current programme participants agree that it is all about mutual understanding and getting to know each other’s cultures. “We may have different opinions, but getting to know each other allows us to clarify our positions better. Every day here inspires me to introduce something new in India, for example, by changing the way we engage people who come to us from abroad,” says R. Dabi. “I’ve met my colleagues from the Czech Republic in the digital world maybe three times a week, so I always wanted to get to know them better, understand their way of working, understand their vision personally & thereby align clear goals & expectations,” says K. Tapaswi about her involvement. Among other things, both Rahul and Karishma admire the systematic way of working and process orientation at ŠKODA AUTO.
The view from the other side comes from two Czechs who travelled to India in early October. “I see up close that, for example, in the area of digitisation, they have different needs in India, and we should set up processes well, especially with regard to the local environment,” adds Horák about his observations after a week in India. “The people here are very cordial, accommodating, and happy to help with everything,” adds M. Dočekal, his colleague. The current exchange programme will help to erase some of the cultural differences or at least limit their impact on the outcome. In other areas, however, everything will certainly remain the same. “India is extremely colourful and lively,” says M. Horák. ED
Did you know that...
... the local food brought contrasting reactions from both “expeditions”? “I’m literally addicted to my chilli peppers, and I miss spicy food here in Czech Republic,” says K. Tapaswi with a smile. “Food that isn’t spicy at all from Indian point of view is about mid-level tolerable to me,” adds P. Dočekal jokingly.

Thorough preparation for electromobility
Pune gets its first certified high-voltage expert
he first employee with expertise relevant to the production of electric cars at ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited’s plants became an employee of the Pune plant, when Amit Arora successfully passed his exams on 30 September. He also travelled to Mladá Boleslav for comprehensive training. “In preparation for the integration of electric cars into the production lines, an essential step is to ensure adequate qualifications for working on electric cars, diagnosing high-voltage systems and servicing them,” says Pavel Richter, coordinator of the SEA/2 – Technical Training and Subsidiaries department, when explaining the importance of the high-voltage expert’s role.
Arora has already started his preparations at home. He had to learn the Indian regulations and standards and study the courses before arriving in the Czech Republic. In Mladá Boleslav with Stanislav Hackl, an electro-mobility systems trainer from the SEA/2 department who is a certified high-voltage expert, they went through ŠKODA AUTO documentation, discussed the differences between Czech and Indian regulations and carried out practical activities on the cars. Of course, they visited the battery assembly in Hall M6 and also both assembly plants where electric cars are manufactured. “My stay in Mladá Boleslav was very beneficial for me, I gained great know how in the field of electromobility. My colleagues from ŠKODA Academy provided me with great support,” says A. Arora.
Passing on the knowledge
And why are courses like this important? It is because a worker with a high-voltage certification has a variety of tasks. “It is absolutely essential that he knows Indian regulations in the areas of occupational safety, fire prevention and identification of critical battery conditions and is involved in the development of locally relevant guidelines for the work with and handling of batteries,” adds Jiří Dvorný from the same department, who is responsible for looking after the subsidiaries. The high-voltage expert also has to create a matrix of mandatory electrical courses to work on the cars and develop professional courses, some of which he also teaches. “Above all, however, he monitors and updates all the supporting documents, determines the length of validity of the sub-qualifications and does much more. It is, therefore, a combination of professional and legislative knowledge with lecturing activities,” adds S. Hackl.
With the experience gained, A. Arora now has to prepare the entire system of compulsory courses for three different qualification levels in Pune. This is a job for several months. However, his cooperation with his colleagues in Mladá Boleslav is not over yet. After the pilot courses, he will deal with feedback and go through all the qualifications with S. Hackl directly in Pune. The exchange of knowledge in the field of electromobility will also continue – for example, on charging infrastructure and charging at extreme temperatures.
The eMobility training programme in India is already gearing up for the next chapter, which is being worked on intensively by experts from the ŠKODA Academy, together with Nisha Karkera, the head of the Training Academy in Pune. This will involve the training of certified trainers for VASS 6 standards (Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA software standard and visualisation in automation of programmable components). ED

IVET
Innovation showcase
IVET 2022 revealed several innovations that may soon appear in ŠKODA cars
he IVET internal innovation trade fair, where each of the Technical Development departments presents its ideas, has for the sixth time revealed a number of “hot innovations” that customers will encounter in ŠKODA cars in the near or distant future. A systemic approach was the common denominator of all this year’s solutions: The innovations relate to specific topics and units while increasingly linking the car’s hardware and software.
I would like to thank all the ŠKODA AUTO employees who participated in the organisation of and presentations at this year’s IVET. They all know that their work doesn’t end there. On the contrary, it has just begun, and now they need to bring their projects to a successful conclusion, which is the implementation of these technologies in ŠKODA cars.
Johannes Neft
Board Member for Technical Development
36 examples of the best
The IVET trade fair was held for the second year in a row in the design hall in Bezděčín, a modern workplace that provides ample space to present all the innovations while still allowing them to be kept secret. However, as usual, ŠKODA Mobil was able to take a peek under the hood at the innovations, as were the hundreds of participants who attended the trade fair. The most important visitors were, of course, the members of the Board (led by CEO Klaus Zellmer), who never miss out on new ideas from their colleagues. In the large hall and in the courtyard behind it, the visitors were able to see and test a total of 36 technological innovations presented by around 100 innovators, which the carmaker is considering for possible deployment in series production. At the entrance, the visitors were greeted by a clay model of the VISION 7S study, which is a fountain of ideas in itself (including an interior with the option of changing modes or with an integrated child seat). In addition, numerous topics presented at the trade fair actually touch directly or indirectly on the future seven-seat electric SUV that will emerge from the study.
Comprehensive themes
Of course, the ideas presented are more universal and not meant for just one model. Many of the ideas that were presented address the issue of electric car charging and related matters in various ways. Other innovations focused on ways to make the car more practical and intensive when travelling, including an emphasis on its outdoor use. And various ideas focused on sustainability. “The vast majority of the solutions presented showed that we should increasingly combine software and hardware innovations into functional units that really have a significant benefit for the customer,” says Petr Šedivý, coordinator of the EB/1 – Innovations department.
The aim of the trade fair, however, was not just to show innovations to colleagues from the carmaker. Perhaps even more important was the feedback. “Visitor reactions and feedback are extremely important because an unbiased view can often take an idea a step further. Some ideas are presented here at a very early stage and can change a lot before they are finalised,” emphasises P. Šedivý. This year, for the first time, the fair also included an award for the ideas that attracted the most attention of the Škodians. Although we are not allowed to reveal specific innovations due to confidentiality, we can take a look at some of them.
Ideas for cars
“This year, for the first time, we presented not only our own innovations, but also things that we create for the VW Group or work on with our partners. We also have innovations that have come directly from the VW Group or from our subsidiaries,” says Darek Čižinský, the main organiser of this year’s IVET, who works at EB/1. Representatives of the HoppyGo car-sharing platform, for example, demonstrated the idea of getting feedback directly from customers. They recently came up with a project in which they collect reactions from drivers who rent an ENYAQ iV electric car. In this way, ŠKODA wants to accelerate the development of customer innovations in cars based on user feedback. For its part, the VW Group has come up with innovations that address, among other things, the possibilities of spending time while charging one’s car. One of the ways is purely software-based and involves simple games that the crew can play in the car (among other places) while waiting for it to charge. The other includes a rich set of accessories whose individual elements can be useful in a lot of other situations.
ŠKODA AUTO is also working with academia. At IVET, student innovations were on display (these included working with the car’s lights but also innovations in the area of air filtration and cabin filter cleaning options, which are based on research and patents held by a team from the Czech Technical University in Prague). However, the vast majority of the upcoming innovations came from inside the carmaker. They included various uses of recycled and recyclable materials, an area on which the carmaker has recently placed great emphasis. Others include safety and practical solutions. One of the themes focused on the placement of a child seat, essentially elaborating on the idea of the “island” from the VISION 7S study but in a more practical and versatile form. The increasing number of functions in modern cars was the focus of an idea that would allow the car to teach its user how to use these functions. And there was no shortage of practical demonstrations, especially as winter is fast approaching. Even in snowdrifts, ŠKODA electric cars should not leave their users “in a ditch”. ED
Do you have some ideas?
This year, IVET moved significantly from a purely presentation-based trade fair to a platform where the ŠKODA AUTO employees discussed how to actually get the innovations that were presented (and more) into cars. “In simple terms, we can say that the trade fair used to be a showcase for what we can do. Now it is a platform that shows our capabilities and, at the same time, tries to find a common way to get these innovations into cars,” D. Čižinský indicates the motivational dimension of the trade fair. And he urges his colleagues not to hesitate and, if they have ideas, to get in touch by e‑mail.

Platform for the whole world
Within the VW Group, ŠKODA AUTO assumes responsibility for the development of the new MQB27 platform for the compact models
he Czech carmaker is taking on a completely new and very important role within the VW Group as it has never previously been responsible for the development of an entire global platform. The new version of the MQB27 platform is essentially a successor to the solution that ŠKODA AUTO was already preparing for the Indian market under the designation MQB-A0-IN. The new platform is set to become the technical basis for VW Group models in global markets such as India, Africa and South America, including the important Brazilian market, in the second half of this decade. “It will be the first platform ŠKODA AUTO has developed since the merger with VW Group,” says Jiří Dytrych, Head of G1 – Product Line Small. The platform is essentially the part of the car that is hidden underneath the body and interior and forms the structural basis of the car. It also represents a significant part of the cost of manufacturing the car. The VW Group is, therefore, trying to unify platforms as much as possible so that they can be used in as wide a range of models as possible.
7,500.000
cars are expected to be built on the MQB27 platform over its entire life cycle.
1 ,200.000
should be the annual production of VW Group cars on this platform.
For the carmaker, the new responsibility is not only a milestone but, above all, an important step for the future. Throughout its entire life cycle, the platform will serve as the basis for millions of cars produced, totalling more than one-tenth of the VW Group’s production, which means great responsibility for ŠKODA AUTO. According to Dytrych, the new platform will be used to build not only the successors to the KUSHAQ and SLAVIA and the corresponding VW cars for India but also a whole range of other cars for other markets. Despite the different requirements of customers and legislation in each of the markets, these cars should be as close to each other as possible in order to use the new platform as efficiently as possible.
Communication is key
One of the most important tasks is to gather all possible requirements for the future platform and to find any compromise between different requirements from different regions, which could be feasible. Thus, communication plays a crucial role in the project. “There are many colleagues in many departments of ŠKODA AUTO, who have the task to get all the requirements from the different regions and representatives of the different brands and different areas and departments, such as Purchasing, Quality Management, Finance, IT, Technical Development and others. These can then be used to create the assignment for the platform development,” says Kira Maria Klimsza, MQB27 Platform Project Manager from the G1M – Model Line Platform MQB2X department. To intensify this communication and identify requirements, the car manufacturer is organising workshops. In June, for example, colleagues from the Czech Republic, Germany, India, Brazil and South Africa met at workshops in Prague and Mladá Boleslav. “There we showed ŠKODA success story to the participants and convinced them about our strengths and abilities regarding our Simply Clever approach,” says J. Dytrych.
The MQB27 platform must be versatile enough that models ranging from small hatchbacks to popular SUVs to sedans and other body styles can be produced on it.
The BW – Value Engineering department (whose work was featured in the August 2022 issue of ŠKODA Mobil) then took charge of the supplier workshop programme, which took place in the summer with the support of ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited and Volkswagen do Brasil on their respective premises. The aim is to get ideas and concepts so that they can be incorporated into the technical description. “Then, in October, together with our colleagues from Technical development our team visited Brazil for a workshop to meet us together in person and to discuss specific requirements from Brazilian market,” Klimsza describes the next phase.
Rough roads and legislation
Different requirements can take many forms. For example, legislative requirements vary across the different markets for which a platform may be designed, whether for the powertrains themselves or for safety. “In Brazil, powertrains with the ability to burn ethanol are a must, while customers in India like turbocharged engines,” explains Jiří Dytrych. Legislative requirements regarding safety mean, in particular, different requirements for the equipment with assistance and safety systems in each of the markets. The climate also has an impact; for example, the heat and humidity in India place great demands on the car’s air conditioning. Markets may also have different requirements for the life cycle of the individual models, and when developing a platform, some room for possible future modifications or improvements must be also considered.
All this means that the platform will require a huge amount of work – work that will also create new jobs. “Hundreds of new jobs will be created across the regions for which the platform is designed,” says Dytrych. ED

Interview with Jens Kroker, Head of G1M – Model Line Platform MQB2X unit
What will the Czech carmaker get out of the transfer of responsibility for the platform?
The responsibility for the platforms in the volume brand group has so far been borne exclusively by Volkswagen. Thus, by entrusting part of this responsibility to the brand, the VW Group is placing a great deal of trust in ŠKODA AUTO. This reinforces our strategic goal of focusing on global markets. We will effectively apply our experience in developing compact cars with a cost-conscious and Simply Clever approach and increase our influence on global projects. At the same time, we will learn a lot from our colleagues in Brazil, for example, who have been developing cars for these markets for a long time.
Which challenges will you face?
It forces us to expand our competencies and know-how. We need to ensure new synergies in the areas of powertrains, chassis, electrical architecture and more. More than 60% of the platform’s direct costs are determined by its components, which significantly increases our responsibility for cost management. The role of platform manager will bring us a new global project management role in all areas, including Purchasing, Manufacturing and Quality Management, as well as working with various regions around the world and across time zones. All this will be carried out in three different native languages.
Why is platform responsibility important for the future of ŠKODA AUTO?
We have a lot to learn in the coming years. This will give us a more important role inside the VW Group, bringing us up to the level of Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche, which are already responsible for platforms. If we can literally produce a masterpiece, we can take over other platforms in the future. The new competence is, therefore, a building block for the future of the ŠKODA brand. ED
Kit basis
The platform represents the technical basis that forms the final car
t is a set of clearly defined units that form what is essentially hidden from the eye of the beholder. For example on current cars, the platform consists of the chassis and the basic strength structure of the body, axles and suspension components of the chassis, power units, cooling and heating system for the passenger compartment and engine cooling system, the entire exhaust system (including the exhaust gas handling system), steering, brakes and the seat frames or the complete electrical architecture of the car (including the infotainment system). The developers always aim to make the platform as unified as possible – the more cars can be built on the same technical basis without major modifications, the more cost-effective the platform is. However, this requires certain design compromises. Different platform elements can have different variations (this is easily seen in the case of engines), which can then be used, for example, according to the focus of the car, in terms of either use or market. Winning Future Talents
Another initiative NEXT LEVEL ŠKODA PEOPLE STRATEGY focuses on attracting and retaining talented candidates at ŠKODA AUTo
n the Czech Republic, the number of university students in technical fields is falling every year. However, they are increasingly needed in practice, which is why ŠKODA AUTO has long focused on winning them over, and supporting technical education is one of the objectives of its corporate social responsibility.
Attracting talent is the focus of another People & Culture initiative called Winning Future Talents, which links all of ŠKODA AUTO’s new and existing activities in this area. Its priority is to reach all available target groups. Therefore, it directly targets not only students and university graduates but also high school students, teachers and parents. They are the ones who can motivate their children to choose a technical field. “The goal of all of our activities is to show young people that work at ŠKODA AUTO is attractive and offers a range of career opportunities,” says Tomáš Geist, Coordinator of the STR/1 – Employer Branding and Cooperation with Schools department.
A path for the talented
Those behind the initiative take a holistic view of the talent acquisition process and, above all, seek to capture the attention of potential candidates. They do this through lectures and workshops at schools, as well as communication on social media and advertising. One of the upcoming innovations will be the EDU platform targeting teachers, students and parents. It will offer tools for technical education at schools, including the already functioning EDU.LAB project, which introduces students to advanced technologies and the possibilities of technical education. However, new content is being created as well, with parents finding a range of interesting articles on the platform.
The carmaker already supports high school and university projects. One example is the Formula Student event, which is the biggest competition for students of technical universities. The carmaker sponsors teams from several Czech universities (e.g. ČVUT, VUT, VŠB-TUO, TUL and ČZU), for whom it is organising the ŠKODA FORMULÁQ preparatory camp for the second year running. It also offers team training and knowledge transfer, for example, on electromobility and other topics.
The ŠKODA Careers website also helps to make working at ŠKODA more accessible, as do various offers of internships and positions for graduates (see the articles on the next page).
The role of experts
In addition to a number of programmes, talent is also dealt with directly at ŠKODA AUTO by experts. They are part of the Expert Concept project, whose second wave is being rolled out to all the areas of the carmaker this year, and the third will be completed by the end of 2023. Around 300 selected employees with high levels of expertise have already been nominated for the Expert Atlas.
Experts make extensive use of the special supra-professional training courses prepared for them by the ŠKODA Academy. Thanks to these experts, they are improving the transfer of their knowledge and skills and can work on their self-development. The role of an expert is such that they must have expert knowledge and pass it on to others. Sometimes, the role is that of an office colleague, other times as mentor, facilitator, innovator, presenter or someone who helps solve everyday issues. They must be able to give expert advice or guide others through difficult situations. ED

Programme for the Talented
The Student Talent Programme underwent significant changes this year to unify the talent winning strategy
he carmaker offers young talent the Trainee, Doctoral, Dual and also the Student Talent Programme, which replaced the original Student Talent Pool. The carmaker currently has around 600 trainees who can apply for the programme. The requirement is that they have worked at ŠKODA AUTO for at least three months and have more than one more year of study ahead of them.
There have been several changes to the Student Talent Programme. Whereas interns previously had to be nominated for the programme by their manager, they can apply on their own now. “This puts their career options in their hands, and it’s up to them to decide whether they wish to move on,” says Alžběta Budinská from the STR/2 – Talent Acquisition department, who is in charge of the talent programmes. Those who wish to apply have to prepare their résumé and motivational letter and take an online English language test. Only the best candidates will proceed to an oral interview, where a three-person panel will select the candidates who will join the programme. The goal is to find students with a potential for the carmaker.
The programme’s participants can enjoy a wide range of benefits: increased financial remuneration of CZK 200 per hour, company phone, extended training offer, career counselling etc. In addition, every member has a mentor, a former trainee. During the programme, participants will rotate through several positions to gain as much insight as possible into the operation of the carmaker. When they then take up their target position, they will be familiar with the company environment, which is also beneficial for their future managers.
The participants are expected to be proactive and willing to go the extra mile for others. They will be involved in one of the project groups where they prepare events for other trainees. They can choose Onboarding, where they help other trainees with onboarding, or Networking, where they prepare tours or lectures for the other members of the programme with a technical or business focus. The Marketing group ensures that the trainees are more visible in and outside the carmaker’s plants.
The capacity of the programme is 35 people, and the selection process takes place several times a year – the next one will be in February 2023. ED

Thanks to my participation in the programme, I’ve met similarly motivated interns and have the opportunity to participate in multiple exciting projects across the carmaker. In addition to my role at the GSC department, I also work with the Finance and IT areas or support the activities of the STR – Recruitment and Employer Branding department. This allows me to show my initiative and learn from more experienced colleagues at the carmaker. Within our Marketing team, we’re not only trying to promote the Student Talent Programme internally but also want to make it attractive to every college student.
Career Blog
KODA AUTO’s Career Platform shows young talent what projects and innovations they can encounter at the carmaker and how quickly their careers can progress. This is primarily done through the stories of our employees, who present the diversity of work at our various departments in the articles. By visiting the blog, everyone will learn more not only about the projects of our employees but also about their personal passions and the challenges they have successfully overcome. All the stories show that ŠKODA AUTO is full of interesting people who approach their work with passion and tenacity. What is more, they often work with technologies that they would otherwise not have easy access to. Our career blog tries to convey their enthusiasm, their work goals and any exceptional projects to all the potential candidates for a job at ŠKODA AUTO. The key topics that young talents are currently interested in include new technologies, work–life balance, diversity and the possibility of working remotely. Trust is Rooted in Integrity
Interview with Elke Kayser, Head of the GO – Governance, Risk & Compliance department
How do you understand the term integrity?
For me, following the principles of integrity means complying with the laws, regulations and rules of the carmaker. It also means that the company in question professes and acts in accordance with its core values such as respect, honesty and fairness. In other words, if all the parties involved were to deal openly with each other and the previous criteria were met, such behaviour would reflect the principles of integrity.
Why is it important for ŠKODA AUTO that its employees act in accordance with the principles of integrity?
Adhering to the principles of integrity forms the basis of personal and professional success because if someone follows the laws, regulations and rules and keeps their word, others will trust them. For the company and its employees, long-term success can only be ensured if all of our employees and their supervisors work together and trust is established.
As a leader, how specifically do you strive to communicate and promote the principles of integrity within your department and team?
Values-driven acting is an integral part of all the decisions that I make in my work practice, as well as the leadership of my team. In this context, I emphasise communication that contributes to the collaborative and successful work of my unit. It is important to set an example for others, even in small ways. This is the only way to prevent misconduct.
Describe a specific situation from your work experience where you have had to choose between following the rules and your personal beliefs. What determined your next steps?
As a lawyer, I examine the correctness of rules and regulations. If I conclude that the rules and regulations are not in accordance with the law or elementary values, I advocate for them to be changed and reach out to responsible colleagues who can support me in this effort. ED

Energy guzzlers
How to save energy both at work and at home without freezing
What you should know about energy consumption
4 × 5
Ventilate four times a day for 5 minutes. During this time, no cooling of furniture or walls will occur – just air exchange. Shock ventilation by opening the window wide is the most effective.
16 °C
If you’re at work, you don’t need to heat your unused apartment to full capacity during the day. Set the temperature lower, ideally to 16°C.
-1 °C
For every 1°C you add to your heating, you spend around 6% extra on heating costs.
50 %
You can reduce the amount of heat lost through your windows by half by closing the curtains and pulling down the external blinds.
40 %
By contrast, your heat consumption will increase by this much if you have the heating elements completely covered by curtains.
ignificant increases in energy prices have hit businesses and households alike. Conscious energy management, which contributes to environmental protection and leads to resource conservation, is good for everyone. There are some simple ways to reduce consumption at least partially without freezing.
Heat smartly
Don’t turn off the heating – just turn down the temperature. Whether you feel comfortable depends on many factors (e.g. exercise, age, mental and physical constitution), but clothing is essential. If you want to be lightly dressed during the heating season, you need a temperature of 22°C or higher in your home. However, this can only be achieved by heating, and no savings can be made. But if you lower the room temperature by just 1°C, you save around 6% of heat energy! So don’t turn the heating on and off based on the temperature you feel in the moment. Instead, use the functions of thermostatic valves or modern heating systems that regulate the temperature automatically.
Controlled ventilation
Always ventilate intensively but briefly, preferably by using a draft. It is economical to exchange air quickly by opening windows or doors for a short time and closing the valves on the heating elements. This prevents the walls and furniture from cooling down and uses less heat energy to warm up again. Continuous ventilation (e.g. with a window open) is the most wasteful, especially if there is a heater underneath.
Heat storage
Do not cover radiators. Leave a clear space around them so that the air circulates well. If you have heating elements covered by curtains or blocked by furniture, heat accumulates behind them and does not flow into the room. Heat accumulation behind furniture and curtains significantly increases heat loss. For this reason too, you need to heat more.
When you’re not at home
You do not need to heat at full capacity for long periods of absence, nor should you let the room get too cold. This will prevent frost and will also require more energy to reheat the cooled rooms. Also, give up permanent ventilation when you are away. If you have thermostatic valves, set them to a low setting or turn on at least one heater and open all the doors. This will usually create a sufficient thermal cushion. ED
Recommendations
Do not neglect maintenance. All heating sources require regular preventive maintenance.
Find out where the heat is escaping and solve the problem by, for example, adjusting or replacing the gaskets.
Check which appliances are using a lot of energy and think about replacing them with more efficient ones.
Switch off electrical appliances that you don’t use (computer, charger, TV, radio).
Replace light bulbs with energy-saving light sources. Don’t shine unnecessarily.
Think about the possibilities of a comprehensive energy solution for your apartment, house or property. This will give you the best results in terms of long-term savings or even energy self-sufficiency.
What ŠKODA AUTO does
he carmaker is gradually implementing the following measures with the support of the KOVO Trade Union: It is reducing the consumption of natural gas in production processes. It is accelerating the transition to LED technology. It is using alternative energy sources, heat pumps, solar cells etc. It has set the temperatures in the production halls to 18°C and in the offices to 20°C in accordance with the collective agreement in force. The SP/2 – Idea Management unit has also launched the SMART Energy ZEBRA incentive campaign (find more here) to seek energy savings. If you would like to learn more about all these changes, you can sign up for an internal EnMS Energy Management System training session. You can find more information about it on ŠKODA Space.

Pořadatel si vyhrazuje právo i bez uvedení důvodů Dobu soutěže zkrátit, Soutěž přerušit nebo zrušit či změnit její Pravidla, a to i bez udělení výhry a bez poskytnutí náhrad. Pořadatel si rovněž vyhrazuje právo nahradit ohlášenou výhru předmětem podobného typu a odpovídající hodnoty a upravit podmínky předání výhry v případě, že výhra nebude poskytnuta způsobem umožňujícím předání výhry vítězům v souladu s těmito Pravidly.

5. Výhra v Soutěži
Výhrou je následující cena:
1x Kniha ŠKODA – automobily na plakátech a v prospektech, 1945–2022.
6. Kontaktování Výherce a podmínky čerpání výhry
7. Pravidla ochrany osobních údajů (v souladu s GDPR 2016/679)

Ročník 2023
Success in times of challenges
In mid-November, around 300 managers gathered at the Škoda Museum for a two-day meeting with the top management of the MMK. The opening session was addressed by Klaus Zellmer, Škoda Auto CEO, and Jaroslav Povšík, Chairman of the KOVO Trade Union. The theme of transformation guided the entire event, which included seminars, discussions and updates from various areas of the carmaker.
Compact but still spacious
The Kylaq, Škoda’s latest and smallest model, was unveiled in November. Measuring less than 4 metres in length, it targets the popular Indian market segment, with prices starting from CZK 220,000. The Kylaq introduces the new Modern Solid design language to India, along with the largest boot in its class and a wide range of equipment focused on safety, including six airbags.
IVET 2024 Innovation Fair
The 8th edition of IVET showcased 36 innovation themes, underscoring Škoda Auto’s commitment to practical advancements. New was a section dedicated to the Indian market and contributions from Group colleagues. The event also featured the presentation of the Elroq. From Simply Clever solutions to technical breakthroughs, the fair continued the tradition of innovations designed with customers in mind.
Chronicle of 2024
In 2024, Škoda Auto continued to launch new models while modernising its bestsellers. The carmaker also adopted a new design language, opened the Laurin & Klement Kampus, supported numerous charitable and sustainable projects, achieved many successes and celebrated several important anniversaries. Discover the highlights from the past year in this year’s Chronicle.
Kronika roku 2024
V roce 2024 Škoda Auto pokračovala v uvádění nových modelů a také v modernizaci bestsellerů. Automobilka navíc přešla na nový designový jazyk Modern Solid, otevřela Laurin & Klement Kampus, podpořila nespočet dobročinných i udržitelných projektů, dosáhla mnoha úspěchů a oslavila několik významných výročí. To nejdůležitější z právě končícího roku se dočtete v letošní kronice.
Launching a new era in India
Four metres is a critical threshold in the Indian automobile market and its segment with this maximum length accounts for nearly 30%. Škoda Auto is entering this segment with the new compact SUV, the Kylaq, which is developed and manufactured in India specifically to cater to the preferences of local customers. This launch follows the earlier introductions of the Kushaq SUV and Slavia sedan.
Conquering the French market
More than half a million visitors flocked to the Paris Motor Show in October, where global carmakers were in attendance. The Škoda Auto stand featured the new electric Elroq, which garnered much attention. Other cars from Škoda’s portfolio were also on display, including a specially modified fourth-generation Superb for the Tour de France race director and the Fabia RS Rally2 competition special.
Reducing software complexity
The second of the Brand Group Core’s six strategic packages is titled Reducing Complexity and focuses primarily on software. The increasing number of drives and assistance systems and the integration of other vehicle functions have led to a complex array of software variants. The aim of reducing the number of software variants is to decrease costs and enhance cybersecurity.
A look inside the battery
The new tomography centre in Hall M6 allows for non-destructive testing of the quality of MEB’s electric platform batteries. Škoda Auto inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility in June this year, and there may not be another facility like it in any other carmaker. Historically, the industry has employed computed tomography technology, or CT scanning, mainly for smaller parts.
Pohled do útrob baterie
