Driving Force of E‑Mobility in Europe

Škoda Auto opened its new MEB+ battery system assembly plant on 27 February, with representatives of the Czech government in attendance.

At the opening of the hall, the Škoda brand presented a completely new, still camouflaged large electric vehicle, the Peaq.

With an investment of 205 million euros, Škoda Auto has become the largest manufacturer of electric vehicle battery systems within the VW Group in Europe. The opening ceremony was attended by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlíček, Škoda Auto management led by CEO Klaus Zellmer, Board Member for Production and Logistics Andreas Dick, KOVO Trade Union Chairman Jaroslav Povšík, as well as Thomas Schäfer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars and member of the VW Group Board responsible for Brand Group Core.

Škoda Auto management and government representatives presented the future of the M8 hall to journalists.

Key technology: cell-to-pack

The battery systems produced here are not assembled from pre-made modules but from individual cells, which are integrated directly into the final battery pack. This approach simplifies design, increases space efficiency and reduces costs while maintaining the required capacity and high safety standards.

Škoda Auto has become the largest manufacturer of electric vehicle battery systems within the VW Group and a central pillar of its electrification strategy.

Škoda Auto is the first VW Group plant in Europe to produce this technology for high-volume electric vehicles. The annual capacity will reach up to 335,000 battery systems, significantly strengthening the European battery value chain and the region’s technological independence. “This is an important milestone for Škoda Auto and demonstrates our commitment to decarbonising the entire value chain. By opening a new assembly line for battery systems, we are localising large-scale battery production, reinforcing a more resilient and competitive European value chain and further enabling e-mobility,” said Klaus Zellmer.

Production at the new plant is among the most technologically advanced within the Volkswagen Group. A high degree of automation and extensive use of robotics ensure stable quality, precision and efficiency for every battery system produced. The new phase also builds on the long-standing experience of the Mladá Boleslav team in producing batteries for electrified vehicles. “Since 2019, we have assembled approximately 1.4 million battery systems in Mladá Boleslav, and the start of cell-to-pack battery production is another step towards transferring a key part of the manufacturing process into our own plants,” added Andreas Dick, Board Member for Production and Logistics.

As part of Brand Group Core, we are proud to contribute to a strong alliance of volume brands shaping the future of sustainable mobility. By building expertise in large-scale battery production and accelerating electrification, we take on additional responsibility and contribute to a sustainable future for Škoda Auto, the Czech Republic and Europe as a whole.
