What Is Currently Growing Above the Heating Plant?
New structures are gradually appearing at the construction site of the modernised heating plant. The first section of the conveyor bridges was raised at the end of June, the superstructure of the high-capacity silos is going up very quickly, and the high-capacity K20 fluidised bed boiler, including its superstructure, will soon be completed. A number of the structures, however, will simply remain out of sight – for example the wood chip sorting and crushing plant or the wagon transfer table.
If you look towards the ŠKO-ENERGO heating plant, you will notice several new buildings gradually rising above the site. During the summer months, the first two sections of the conveyor bridges were raised. At first glance, they look like nothing more than a steel structure. In reality, though, they are an important part of the transformation of the entire heating plant, because this is the route the new fuel will take. From 2027, brown coal will be replaced by biomass, specifically a combination of wood chips and phytopellets. A completely new transport and storage system is being built to move this fuel from the unloading point all the way to the boilers.
The road to cleaner energy runs above the heads of the employees and visitors at the Mladá Boleslav plant.
The biomass journey step by step
Biomass will arrive in Mladá Boleslav mainly by rail. After unloading, it will head to the high-capacity silos, which will keep enough fuel in stock for the smooth operation of the heating plant. From there, the conveyor bridges take over. They will carry the wood chips continuously and automatically straight to the fluidised bed boilers, where the fuel is converted into heat and electricity.
The conveyor system is designed to reliably transport large volumes of biomass every day. At the same time, it minimises fuel handling and allows the fuel to be fed into the boilers steadily, according to current production needs.
The heating plant is changing while it runs
The construction work is going ahead without any interruption to energy supplies. Even during this extensive modernisation, the heating plant supplies the Škoda Auto production plants with heat and electricity around the clock and keeps thousands of households in Mladá Boleslav warm.
Alongside the conveyor bridges, the building for the new K20 fluidised bed boiler is also going up. The boiler has already passed its pressure test and the first wood chips will go into it in the autumn. At the same time, modernisation of the existing K80 fluidised bed boiler continues and the high-capacity silos, which will serve as an interim store for wood chips, are being completed. ŠKO-ENERGO will start the retrofit (modernisation) of the second fluidised bed boiler, K90, at the beginning of 2027.
The current modernisation of the heating plant at the Mladá Boleslav site is one of the largest decarbonisation projects of its kind in Czech Republic. Once it is completed in 2027, the share of renewable and sustainable energy sources will increase, which will cut the purchase of carbon dioxide emission allowances by 274 thousand tonnes a year.
