The Kylaq Crossed the Himalayas and the Asian Steppes
The compact SUV developed and built in India took 70 days to travel from Pune to Mladá Boleslav and Prague.
From Around the World
Last year, the Kylaq was one of the mainstays of the Škoda brand's line-up in India. The compact SUV, under four metres long, was tailored to the tastes and needs of Indian customers. Among other things, they expect it to be reliable and durable in the most varied climatic conditions and on different types of road. And the Kylaq convincingly proved that this is exactly where its strengths lie. In seventy days it completed a demanding route of almost 20 thousand kilometres from India to Mladá Boleslav and Prague.
19,351 km

The project, in which the magazine Autocar India took part, set off from the Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited production plant in Pune. The Kylaq, with a 1.0 TSI engine producing 85 kW, an automatic gearbox and finished in Cherry, drove through the heart of India. It appeared in Mumbai, Jaipur, Agra, Lucknow and Gorakhpur, from where it headed to Nepal. There it climbed to a huge altitude and, through a pass between the Himalayan giants, reached the Tibetan Plateau in China. Along the way there was also a view of the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest. Next came the endless Central Asian steppes, the crossing of the Caucasus and the journey through Türkiye to Europe. The expedition passed through 13 countries, where it experienced temperatures from -12 to +43 °C. It faced luxury motorways as well as dusty or muddy broken roads. The Kylaq coped everywhere.
“What began as a symbolic journey linking our production plant in Pune with the cradle of Škoda Auto turned into a celebration of progress, determination and shared heritage. The Kylaq built in India proved that technical excellence is best confirmed by real-world experience,” says Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Škoda Auto India.
The carmaker and the Autocar India magazine documented the journey On the net. Škoda brand fans from India also took part in a competition, and the winners came to welcome the car in Prague.
