Persistent Chemicals
in a New Context
In recent years, the European Union has been intensively focused on the responsible management of a group of substances known as PFAS. These are poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances, known for their exceptional stability and resistance to water, oils and high temperatures. The initiative's long-term goal is to minimise their environmental impact and promote sustainable solutions.
Due to their properties, PFAS substances are used in a wide range of products — from consumer goods (non-stick surfaces or water-resistant clothing) to industrial applications. Many of them are also used in the automotive sector. Škoda Auto has long been working to reduce the amount of these substances, taking into account the service life of individual parts and potential environmental impacts. The company monitors their use responsibly, systematically and in accordance with current legislative developments.
One specific step, for example, is the successful transition to fluorine-free fire extinguishing agents, which replace the PFAS-containing fire-fighting foams previously used. At the same time, Škoda Auto is analysing the use of these substances across its processes and seeking opportunities to replace them where technically feasible. In some specific cases, a fully viable alternative is not yet available, so the company is focusing on further research.
Part of Škoda Auto's approach as a responsible company is also employee training in the handling of chemical substances. The training focuses on current legislative requirements, safe handling of materials and raising awareness of potential impacts on the environment and health. All necessary documents and guidelines, including organisational standards, can be found on Škoda Space.
