Driver Training is Relentless
Italian driver Roberto Daprà mastered the winding mountain roads of the Canary Islands, securing third place in the provisional overall standings of the WRC2 category.
Controlling a rally car requires not only maximum concentration but also top-notch physical fitness. "During a rally, drivers make up to ten thousand movements in the car — turning the steering wheel and shifting gears. It's really hard work," says Jaromír Jiřík, a doctor and trainer for elite athletes.
To ensure their bodies can handle the rigours of the special stages during a race weekend, the drivers spend a lot of time in the gym. "They need a strong core and shoulders, firm forearms and above all a strong neck that can withstand the strain in corners," explains J. Jiřík. "In weeks without a rally, I work out about every other day," adds Estonian driver Robert Virves. When travelling to world rally events, he makes sure to choose hotels with well-equipped gyms.
Škoda Motorsport also helps the drivers with their physical training. Filip Kohn, Robert Virves and Dominik Stříteský recently completed a multi-day training camp during which J. Jiřík put them through their paces. In addition to strength training, they tried out a cryochamber and tested their skills in go-karts. The varied programme aims to boost the drivers' concentration and mental well-being.
