Lost in the Wilderness
In March, an expedition by teams from BBC Earth and BBC Top Gear set out on a journey of more than 500 kilometres to the Great Rift Valley region in northern Kenya. "Pulling off this project required months of careful planning, coordination and collaboration between several teams in the UK and Kenya. Working in such a remote part of the world presented specific challenges, and the result is a fascinating journey and a powerful story that connects humanity's origins with evolution and the future of electric mobility," said Pietro Panarisi, Head of PR and Communications at Škoda UK.
The Škoda Enyaq Coupé RS set out into the extreme conditions of the African wilderness in completely standard specification. The only modification was the fitting of special off-road tyres. Constant traction was ensured by all-wheel drive thanks to an electric motor on each axle. On unpaved surfaces, the Traction driving mode came in handy, optimising all-wheel drive for driving in more demanding environments. The optional adaptive DCC (Dynamic Chassis Control) suspension handled the uneven terrain.
Driving an electric vehicle in such remote locations presented a logistical challenge due to the lack of fast-charging infrastructure. However, the team managed using a three-phase power supply, which is commonly found in workshops or industrial buildings. Combined with a portable charging adapter, the Enyaq was able to charge at speeds of up to 11 kW. The electric vehicle operated without any issues even in this region.

Discover the cradle of humanity
Northern Kenya is often referred to as the cradle of humanity. This is because it is home to Lake Turkana, the world's largest permanent desert lake, whose shores have yielded evidence of early human evolution, with fossil finds dating back several million years. Worth visiting are, for example, the fishing village of Kalokol or the town of Lodwar, where the region's administrative centre is located. Along the way, you can also visit a traditional manyatta settlement, an iconic symbol of local culture, where families live in circular huts built from local materials.
